I'm generally pleased with my XPS. I am using the Dell WD22TB4 Thunderbolt dock with dual displays. Several idiosyncrasies with video dropouts and startup display desktops. The XPS was expensive compared to other Dell Laptops, and I'm unclear on what, if any, extra benefit I'm getting for the price.

Good laptop so far! Had a bit of a pain setting it up but that’s mostly Windows 11’s fault. Enjoying the upgraded specs compared to my last laptop (everything runs a lot faster and smoother now), but I do miss having a touchscreen and 360° hinge. Overall though, this is a solid purchase for the price point.

Great performance, terrible screen

Regarding specs and performance this thing is simply a beast. However problems are numerous. Firstly I spent over three hours on a phone with a guy from Dell to help me fix driver issues with a screen that cause pc to reboot every 15min. Screen itself is simply terrible, completely washed out colors. No dell software, nor windows and driver updates can fix this. Literally, cheap 5 year old Lenovo Yoga has way more pleasant screen. In addition there is also a small dim spot in the corner of the screen. Screen is just one trouble after the other. Especially if you take into account the price of the laptop I find the display hideous. If you connect it to the external display(s), experience with this laptop becomes top notch. To conclude I was never closer to buying a MacBook.

Try AMD CPUs this year if care about battery life

Nicely built machine with a beefy CPU and GPU. However, the battery life of 12th gen Intel Core really sucks. It ran out of power after 2.5 hrs.
What makes things worse is that this laptop only supports USB-C PD charging with a maximum of 100W/130W.
No joking, when I use this machine on full blast, the battery will drain even plugging in the power charger.
And the machine is very hot (not surprisingly) on the bottom.
Conclusion:
Don't buy any laptop with a beefy Intel 12th gen CPU if you care about battery life. This machine has an 87 Wh battery but the battery life still sucks, For any laptop, the battery must be less than 100Wh for safety regulations.
Dell cannot do too much about that when using Intel Alder Lake. Please try AMD.

Hello ZZZZ,
We would like to thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you are not 100% satisfied with your Dell XPS 9520 laptop because the battery performance is not as you expected.
To help with a battery performance issue, we recommend changing the Power Plan:
1. On the notification area of the taskbar, right-click the Battery icon. 2. On the options list, click Power Options. 3. Select a power plan on the battery meter, such as Power Saver or Balanced. Windows 10 has a built-in 'Battery Saver' mode that can be activated to extend your system's battery life. The Battery Saver mode will monitor and limit background activity and other features such as push notifications. You do have the option to enable or disable this mode within settings or within advanced Battery Saver settings, you can customize the mode to best suit your needs.
a) Click on the Action Center icon in the taskbar and select the tile for Battery Saver. b) If running Cortana then type Battery Saver into the search box and select from the results. Within the Battery Saver settings page, you will be able to turn on and off the feature and customize the feature to best meet your needs. c) Turn the Battery Saver On or Off. d) Additional settings are available via the Battery use and Battery saver settings links. e) Battery use shows further info on apps and their power usage. f) Battery Saver Settings screen allows you to customize further Battery Saver features.
If the problem with your battery is not resolved after applying the troubleshooting tips above, please reach out to our support team here for further guidance: 1-800-624-9896.
Best, Katarina@Dell

Powerful, Fast, Fun, Quiet, Cool DELL XPS Laptop

This DELL XPS stands out from other PCs with similar specs in terms of quality in several key areas. For one, the feel of the keyboard keys is nice, and the touchpad feels solid as well. I adapted to using this keyboard very quickly, and I like that it has a 'print screen' key which an earlier system I owned lacked (though, I learned Shift+Win+S is a workaround for screenshots). The fingerprint-reader/power-button on the keyboard is well placed (like my apple laptop) and works well to make sign-in quick and easy. The keyboard is also backlit, which one will appreciate when typing in the dark.
Next, the choice of resolution (one step up from FHD) seems ideal for this size screen given how Windows usually does a poor job of "scaling down" higher resolutions (frequently losing the benefits of the higher resolution, from observation). This display looks better than my WQHD screen included on another 15" laptop. The display itself is very bright (usable in daylight, I'm outdoors now preparing this review) and the colors look good. The Nvidia graphics chipset included, while not necessarily top of the line, will enhance one's ability to play games on this PC. As a quick example, I looked at the 2018 "Forza Horizon 4" which Microsoft's Xbox app says, "Should play great on this PC," and it did play quite well when I tried it (on battery power, and outdoors, no less).
The speakers on this DELL sound superior to any other laptop (Windows or MacOS) I've tried so far, they're placed so when you're sitting in front of the computer the speakers play sounds on both sides of your ears. I am more likely to listen to music or enjoy games more without headphones because of the quality.
Battery life is good, and at two diverse levels of usage, after about 20 minutes I went through 4% and 7% battery. Four percent for 20 minutes would be five hundred minutes at 100%. Seven percent for 20 minutes is around 285 minutes for 100%. As may be obvious, depending on usage battery life will drastically vary.
Surprisingly, the WIFI 6 (AX) performance seems far superior to my other PC's Wi-Fi 6 support. Right now, among other things, I’m downloading games to test with the Xbox app, and on that download, I am getting rates averaging over 11MB/s, which is 88Mbit/s - and our whole home (40+ devices connected) shares 100Mbit/s connection, so it's coming close to full available speed.
I love that, unlike my earlier Samsung laptop, this laptop comes with visible screws on the bottom to access internals like the SSD drive (which is reported to be upgradable) and/or memory. If you're going to download many games or store videos on it, it is possible you'll want to upgrade the storage space. If you're not comfortable making the upgrade yourself, I have personal experience letting Geek Squad perform that kind of upgrade at reasonable cost.
If I had to point out one thing that I believe may be a design flaw, it's that there is no obvious place to grip to open the laptop lid, so thus far I find myself struggling a little bit to open the laptop each time. Gripping on the sides, I'm getting a little better at it, though.
The laptop fans seem quiet (notably, compared to my Asus gaming laptop), I haven't really heard them at all --- but at the same time the laptop runs very cool, I don't find myself burning my legs when the laptop is placed on my lap. When I was trying out a game and played for 30 minutes, the laptop did get warmer, but it was still tolerable on my bare legs (wearing shorts).
Other than the laptop lid, I have to say this is an otherwise perfect PC laptop-- it's got impressive performance and graphics, it's got good starter storage space (upgradable), the fingerprint reader, backlit keys, fast and reliable Wi-Fi, and has Windows 11. I would recommend this one if it's in your price range and you need a PC laptop.
