Major Disappointment
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is a major disappointment. While Dell and other manufacturers believe in shifting to USB C ports exclusively, this shift turns a great PC into a $2000 doorstop unless all you plan to do with it is basic stuff. I even tried a Dell dock in order to connect peripherals like an external monitor, microphone and higher quality camera and the result is still extremely poor. Beware of what you really plan to do with your laptop before you choose this machine. I would return it if I could. I also won't buy another laptop from Best Buy due to their ridiculously short return window.

It doesn't get better than this
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The XPS 9520 continues greatly unchanged from its predecessor, but that’s not a criticism considering its excellent, near-perfect linage. The changes are simple … more power and speed thanks to the I7-12700H processor and what I assume is now a PCI-E 4 SSD. The elegant look and feel are unchanged. The build quality is perfect, and all this is still contained in an amazingly thin and lightweight package. The packaging matches in quality. The outer box suspends and protects the interior box without any foam or non-recyclable materials. The box holding the laptop has a magnetic flap to open. Inside and out it’s clean, first class, and minimalist. Features such as ports, support (excellent), charger, etc. remain unchanged. That said, I am going to confine my review to what has changed. My 9520 has the FDH+ screen, and I was prepared to be a bit disappointed compared to the 3.5K OLED screen on my older XPS 9510. There isn’t a better screen on a laptop, so that computer set a high bar. However, I was quite surprised at just how good and how close the FHD came to matching its high-dollar, more energy-hungry variant. It took a side-by-side comparison to see the difference. Of course, the OLED has a bit more saturation and deeper blacks, but I couldn’t perceive a difference in sharpness and resolution, and the FHD screen is very bright. Perhaps a 15” screen is a bit too small to realize the benefit of 4K. The reward is longer battery life and a higher refresh rate with a 1080P resolution. Additionally, there are no scaling problems with older, legacy programs that often have issues with font size in 4K. I ran some speed tests to compare these two laptops and measure what has been gained. Novabench showed an overall system rating of 3600 vs 3200. The big difference was disk speed. CrystalDiskMark yielded read-write speeds of 6446/3778 vs 3424/2922 which was an amazing increase. Cinebench which measures graphics rendering reported 11547 vs 8961 for the older sibling. That increase was while running the multi-core test where the I7-12700H with its 14 cores and 20 threads and the Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti with 4GB of memory shine. Only systems with some I9 and Threadripper processors scored higher. This means that even though the XPS 9520 is marketed as a powerful production laptop, it is getting closer to becoming a viable gaming computer. At 1080P it should run any game you throw its way at a decent frame rate. The XPS 9520 is available in several configurations. To realize its value and potential, I wouldn’t consider the slower I5 processor. To me, that would be like throwing out a boat anchor on a race boat. The RAM and SSD are upgradable, and there’s an empty M2 slot for an additional drive. You can choose from three screens … FDH, 3.5K OLED, or 4K … your choice. This is a superb and physically beautiful laptop that has been improved from the previous model. It’s a viable competitor with the MacBook Pro. I think the decision between this and its Apple competitor will be based on whether IOS or Windows is your system of choice. If you want a first-class system and are willing to spend the money, this is a real winner.

Powerful Sleek Designed Laptop from Dell
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Dell XPS 15 15.6” FHD+ laptop is an admirable performer in it’s class. I think this is a good choice for a student or a professional looking to get a good processor and a bright screen with a few other functions. I think most major corporations have caught on to the unboxing appeal for consumers. The laptop arrives in a sleek matte black box that holds the laptop which is wrapped in a nice opaque clear wrapper. Included in the package is the documentation, a charging adapter and a USB-C to USB-A HDMI adapter. The laptop is relatively slim and has a sleek backlit keyboard. The mouse pad on this laptop is unusually large and actually a welcome improvement for me. I normally use a Bluetooth mouse but have stuck to using just this mouse pad and I actually like it. It offers fingerprint recognition and facial recognition to unlock. Setup on this laptop was super easy and took a minimal amount of time to enter all my info in and get it up and running. The screen looks great at 1920x1200. Large, colorful and bright with minimal bezel. The keypad feels rather scrunched together but maybe because I’m used to using a larger keyboard on a daily basis. This doesn’t feel like a cheapo plastic laptop, it feels premium as it should. The inputs are 3 usb-c, which is …annoying. I get that everyone wants to move to USB-c and it’s happening but for all of us who still appreciate the normal USB 3.0 ports and an HDMI port, this is a huge bummer. Of course they have included the adapter, which will eventually be lost and I’ll be buying another one. There seems to be room for these relatively small inputs but I guess it wasn’t in the cards for this laptop. Performance for this Dell is great. The Intel processor is speedy and everything feels very snappy and quick. The laptop boasts a GeForce RTX with 4GB memory which is good enough for light gaming and regular usage. This isn’t a gaming laptop, it’s a work/student laptop that can handle some games. 512gb storage is good, not great for the price. Battery life is ok, not great but I normally keep my laptop stationary for the most part so it stays charged up. There are of course, eco settings that can help extend your battery life a bit. All in all I would recommend this laptop to any student or professional looking to get a high quality unit that will last (I still have old dells that hold up well even today) over the years. If you’re looking for a gaming laptop go ahead and look at another laptop. I won’t remove a star for the cons (lack of HDMI, USB 3.0) because those are known facts about the laptop, not something that popped up in review. Great laptop, go for it!

The Dell XPS 15 Laptop, in a word -- Magnificent!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A superbly versatile and powerful laptop computer that is an outstanding value for now and for the future, Dell XPS 15 9520 stands out from the crowd. It is powered by the 12th Gen Intel I7 with 14 cores, 20 threads, and will clock at "4.7" GHz in Turbo (that is FAST). On board storage is a solid state drive with 512 GB, and a plentiful 16 GB of memory (RAM). The display is a 15.6" bright high resolution razor sharp anti glare screen. Sound: there are 2 woofers , 2 tweeters, 2 microphones and an audio jack. For a notebook computer that is beautifully styled, gorgeous silver case with exquisite contrasting black interior, the sound was absolutely excellent. The microphones were sensitive, and worked exceptionally well when I gave verbal commands and instructions. The Dell Connect software uses the Amazon echo software so that it works with android phones and devices, AND with my "iPhone." This Dell feature (SHOW mode) allows the computer to recognize "voice" commands proceeded by "ALEXA, and to "DISPLAY" the ... weather, news, facts about most anything you want to know, making and receiving phone calls, mirroring your cell phone with file transfers, making the camera into a surveillance camera when desired, an alarm to remind you to ... after X minutes or at a specific time, etc. Once you lift the top of this computer, the onboard camera fires up (working in conjunction with an infrared face sensor) and uses FACE recognition to fire up (though it also has finger touch recognition). The face recognition is extremely fast and accurate with initial training during set up taking a minute. The keyboard requires light touch and is a pleasure to type on. The trackpad is convenient to use because of its 6" width with approx. 3.5 length and instant tactile response. Function keys abound with keyboard lighting, print screen keys, etc. In designing this marvel, Dell placed a light sensor at the fromt of the case which will automatically adjust the brightness of the display and keyboard to the ambient lighting. Accessories require ports, and this notebook has two USB 4 Type C ports, as well as USB 3.2 Type C port, an SD card slot, and also has Bluetooth 5.2. I have been actively using notebook computers since they were introduced to the marketplace, and have owned 13, including MacBooks. I like this laptop more than any other I have used, and would unhesitatingly recommend it for home or business use.

Beautiful aesthetics, nicely equipped laptop!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a beautiful effort from Dell using Intel's 12th Generation Core i7-12700H processor, Intel WiFi 6, 16 GB of 4800 MHz DDR5, a very capable NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics solution driving a 15.6" 1920 x 1200 WUXGA display, and a 512 GB NVMe SSD boot drive. Intel's 12th generation architecture is a pretty radical departure from previous x86 processors, as it supports "Performance" cores and Efficient" cores. This particular Core i7-12700H process boasts 6 Performance cores and 8 Efficient cores. Efficient just means they are low-power cores, and accordingly they are lower performance than the "Performance" cores. Fortunately all of the task allocation to processor cores is transparent in Windows 11, so one less thing to worry about. To sum it all up... this laptop has great specs out of the box! Performance is rock-solid, as you would expect from Intel's flagship platform architecture surrounded by a solid configuration of memory, graphics, display, and SSD. I would say that the performance would rival many desktops, but that's my semi-educated opinion. There are only two things I can think of that I'd do differently: (1) add touch screen; and (2) going with Windows 11 Professional. Those are nits in the grand scheme of things, however, and not a ding on the laptop. As with any PC, you want to ensure you are running the latest BIOS and drivers. Dell Command is a downloadable utility from the Dell website that you'll want to download. Run it every month or so, and it will help automate the updating of your Dell laptop and keep you up-to-date.

Overpriced and underpowered
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Runs hot and thermal throttles easily. The entire chassis is always warm to the touch making normal use annoying. The display is a weird resolution for the size making Windows scaling frustrating. Either everything is small and crisp or large and blurry. Not worth the money.

Fantastic system for the price.
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop was a homerun. Specifically purchased for business as our current supply chain is disrupted. I thought it would be a difficult switch from the latitude model but this thing is great. I might start replacing a few more of the latitudes with this XPS. The only thing missing we needed was a CAC reader, but the overall construction and quality are fantasic.

A Good Workhorse
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Dell XPS 15 15.6: FH+ Laptop has 12th Generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM. The unit that I have has a 512 GB steady state drive (SSD). The machine was relatively easy to set up. It comes with a trial subscription to McAfee which I removed. One of the cool features that you set up initially is facial recognition to log in instead of a password, though you select a pin also if you desire. I did have trouble getting Office programs to install correctly with my MS 365 subscription but with a few tries it did eventually work. The graphics and video specs are amazing on this machine. Colors are crisp. It is very easy to customize the machine to your liking to make it yours. I use several programs that demand a lot of horsepower. This machine runs them like a pro. I have not had any sluggish operations in the week of using the machine so far. Even with having a video or music playing, work programs run like a breeze. Another great plus is that it comes with an adapter so you can use HDMI and USB peripherals easily without having to go buy another adapter. The machine has 3 USB C and 1 SD card port. A drawback is that it does not attach to the computer for storage in anyway so it will be quite easy for it get lost. This laptop is not a touchscreen device, which has its plusses and minuses. The only negative that I have is the sheer weight of the device. It is very heavy despite is sleek design. The laptop and charging cord together weigh close to 10 pounds.
