Amazing Machine, But A Little Too Big?

This Dell XPS is a power house, with little room to claim otherwise. The only downside to this laptop, if you were to gripe about any part of it, would be the size. Having come up in the ranks over the years from 13" to 14" to 15.6", the 17" model still keeps the small form factor that Dell XPS is well known for, but still provokes intimidation due to the sheer size and weight. This is certainly not a laptop for someone wanting to 'grab n' go' with their portable workstation. This is however an amazing machine that essentially will take care of you through and through, regardless of that tasks you throw at it. I would only recommend this to someone who plans to mostly to keep their laptop stationary, such as at a desk or office space.

Pros: Fast 12th generation H series CPU (almost as fast as 13th gen)! Beautiful 16x10 display! Upgradeable RAM and SSD (x2). Comfortable keyboard and touchpad. Speakers are great. Cons: Battery life is okay. Fan noise can be little annoying in a quiet room.

Needed an upgrade machine for speed up my workflow with digital content creation, editing RAW file images, and 3d model rendering. I was looking to get a gaming laptop because of the specs I need for heavy data laden projects. I went with this unit instead. So far so good. I'll be upgrading to max ram and adding another SSD in the near future. I may come back for an update when I do.

Have been keeping a look out for this model to decrease in price with the new 13th gen CPUs being released. Like having a 17inch screen with the form factor closer to 15inch. I selected an open box excellent buying option and then elected to add a Dell extended warranty. Have not experienced any unusual heat activity or fan noise. I'd recommend adding 32 or 64 GB of memory. With basic Windows 11 and applications, I use at least 65% of available memory. Buy a kit to help facilitate removing the back cover to add memory, larger drive, etc.

The Dell XPS 17 really is the best built, best quality, most robust Windows laptop on the market in my opinion. It is built rock solid and the UHD screen looks amazing. the nVidia 3060 adds the power to game while the I7 and 16gb of ram give you the power to work. Screen is plenty bright enough and vivid.

Seems to be a sturdily constructed laptop. Display is good. But mine flickered and I had to have a warranty repair. Battery life is terrible. I’m very disappointed that after all these “generations” of Intel Core chips, they’re still power hogs. I have my laptop set on the highest efficiency power settings to minimize the heat and the fan noise. Speaking of… the design of the laptop’s ventilation is insufficient for the heat generated by the components in this laptop. If you set the BIOS and OS power settings to anything but the highest efficiency, get ready for fan noise for anything you do on the computer. I’ll probably resell this laptop somewhere.

      Hey Zumo21,
We thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your Inspiron 27” touch screen all-in-one. We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing an issue with your battery life. That is not the type of feedback we like to hear from our customers, or the type of product Dell intends to deliver. We have noted the details of your statement and will use them to improve current and future products. Below I have provided troubleshooting steps to help resolve your issue.
Here are the steps to help improve the battery performance of your laptop:
      1. On the notification area of the taskbar, right-click the Battery icon.
      2. On the options list, click Power Options.
      3. Select a power plan on the battery meter, such as Power Saver or Balanced. Windows 10 has a built-in 'Battery Saver' mode that can be activated to extend your system's battery life. The Battery Saver mode will monitor and limit background activity and other features such as push notifications. You do have the option to enable or disable this mode within settings or within advanced Battery Saver settings, you can customize the mode to best suit your needs.

      a) Click on the Action Center icon in the taskbar and select the tile for Battery Saver.
      b) If running Cortana, type Battery Saver into the search box and select from the results.
Within the Battery Saver settings page, you will be able to turn on and off the feature and customize the feature to best meet your needs.
      c) Turn the Battery Saver On or Off.
      d) Additional settings are available via the Battery use and Battery saver settings links.
      e) Battery use shows further info on apps and their power usage.
      f) Battery Saver Settings screen allows you to customize further the Battery Saver feature.

This is a terrific computer for business. My only issue with the device is the lack of USB and HDMI and Ethernet ports. They provide an adapter but that will inevitably get lost. Everything else about the computer (and especially the keyboard) is first class.

Under Performing With New & Ongoing Problems

I've been using this Dell laptop every day for about a week and the list of problems keep growing. I'd hoped at first it was just human error, but after the Geek Squad did a remote check to take care of any issues, the touchpad is still unresponsive, it still says my printer is offline even though it's not--every other device I own prints fine--pages become unreadable in Word and it lags across the board, especially online. The only upside is a decent screen. Unfortunately I brought it back to Best Buy because it was slow shortly after purchase, but was convinced to keep it by one of the Geek Squad guys. My mistake for not immediately spending the amount of time needed to really see how it performs within the warranty and now it's too late to return. There was also an issue with the sound not working and not being able to use the touchpad at all when I picked it up again after not using it for awhile. I'd rather use a very old Macbook Pro or three and a half year old Lenovo Notebook than this heavy, under performing disappointment.

      Greetings Jomo,
Thank you for taking the time to leave us your review. We are sorry to hear that you are having touchpad sensitivity issues in regard to your XPS 9720 touch Laptop. This is certainly not the experience that we like to hear from our customers. We will share your concern with our quality team so that improvements can be made to our current and future products and services. Below I have provided troubleshooting instructions with the full article that may be able to resolve the issue.

Here are the steps to help resolve your touchpad issue:
      1. Ensure the touchpad and your finger do not have any dirt, grease, liquids, or food on them (the touchpad has to make good contact with your finger to work correctly).
      2. Ensure that the touchpad is turned on.
      3. Save any data, close any open programs and restart the computer by using a wired USB mouse (if available) or Bluetooth mouse if it is already installed, if not, press hold the power button for at least 15 seconds to turn the computer off.
      4. Unplug everything except the power cable.
      5. Turn the computer back on and retest the touchpad.
      6. When the cursor does work correctly, attach one device at a time, and test the cursor movement to see which one may have caused the issue.
      7. Ensure that the BIOS and Chipset drivers are updated to the latest version.

Needed to replace my 4 year old HP-Envy with something with similar features. This laptop is much more than I probably need but an open box sale put it in the same price range. I am a business user, not a gamer, but the size and display is amazing. While the screen is 17", the entire computer isn't much bigger than my 15" work laptop. My only complaints are 1) no USB, only Thunderbolt drives, so you will need an adapter for usb devices; 2) the HUGE mousepad which is inadvertently touched when typing and can lead to text getting erased; and, 3) THERE IS NO NUMBER PAD! These are probably characteristics of gaming laptops but frustrating AF to a business user.

It was indeed in excellent condition. Its worth looking at the open box items at Best Buy. This XPS 17 is a masterpiece. Though it is 17 inch, it does not seem massive in heft. And it is fast. Surely recommend to look at when shopping for a 17 incher.

I purchased this as an open box but it was evident that it was never used as the outer boxing was damaged. The laptop performance wise was great: it was fast and the screen was gorgeous. I would up returning it for three reasons though and they're all personal (if not admittedly odd) reasons: * I preferred a laptop that had ports in addition to USB-C. If I'm traveling I don't want to carry a plug in port for an HDMI cable or something like that * 17" is too big to easily use or store on a plane * I prefer laptops with a number pad If you don't have those strange hiccups like I do, then I would highly recommend getting it.
