Sounds very good as long as you don't expect absolutely huge sound. It is a small package. Made dialogue way clearer and audio is quality. Hard to get good mid-range out of anything this size, but the subwoofer delivers acceptable bass. Ideal for regular TV watching, but maybe not epic movie soundtracks.

My son installed this for me and I immediately turned to music stations on my TV to listen to the sound. I was pleasantly pleased. The bass the subwoofer provides is adequate enough to enjoy that rich sound. The soundbar itself provides great treble and midrange. It can get loud. Best thing to do is turn down volume on TV and only use soundbar.

We were looking for a sound bar system and had some size constraints to deal with. Our sales associate introduced us to Denon and after hearing its TOP OF THE LINE performance at a mid-range price point, we were sold. So sold in fact, we went back and purchased a 2nd

Exactly what a sound bar should be

The Denon DHT-S316 represent an entry level sound bar from a pretty well known audio company. Most familiar with Denon would consider its home theater receivers to be some of the best in the industry. Denon is no stranger to the soundbar industry either, but obviously they our fighting in a much more crowded industry here. The DHT-S316 shines though, and will strike a cord with anyone looking for a no frills sound bar with excellent sound reproduction.
So what does the DHT-S316 offer? It’s a soundbar with a pretty low profile (35” wide and 2” tall - will look right at home underneath a 46-55” TV), but with a solid feature set. The soundbar offers not only a digital optical audio input, but also HDMI ARC. There is an aux jack as well for stereo as well, but you’ll need to bring your own cable (both HDMI and optical cables can be found in the box).
You also get Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, both bitstreams are well supported and offer 5.1 audio channels. While you can’t expect a full surround sound experience from a 2.1 sound bar, Denon offers “advanced psychoacoustic algorithms” (taken from their marketing material) that actually do a decent job of spatial sound without going overboard. When using HDMI ARC or Optical LEDs indicates the mode. Green is Dolby bitstream, orange DTS, and blue is PCM. My Sony would bitstream over HDMI, but my Vizio wouldn’t (just 2 channel PCM unless on the TV input or the built-in apps). Some might say that PCM 2.0 is more than enough for a 2.1 soundbar, but there is something to the on board audio processing when it comes to simulating surround. Just being able to handle the digital bitstreams natively is a differentiator in this price range and adds to the home theater value and credentials.
Hooking up was pretty easy. HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) is supported by most modern TVs, and is the only way to go, as it allows you to use your TV remote to control the volume though CEC (Consumer Electronic Control). I tried the soundbar with both my Sony (2016) and Vizio TV (2014) and both controlled and powered on/off the soundbar seamlessly with no additional setup. The downside of using ARC here is that there is no HDMI input passthrough, so you need to dedicate your ARC HDMI port to just the audio connection. For some this may be a dealbreaker, and it definitely hurts - especially if your display is HDMI port starved. Essentially the HDMI ARC input will be left unpopulated as the soundbar doesn’t offer any video functionality. This was no problem for me, as the Vizio in question has a plethora of HDMI inputs and I only use 2.
I chose to wall mount mine. Not only do you get an included wall mount template which makes life a lot easier when positioning the screw holes, but you get spacers as well, allowing some separation from the wall and allowing it to snug up (they’re made of a rubbery somewhat compressible material). I didn’t use either, as I was replacing a lower end sound bar which had similar but not exact mounting holes and I had to engineer my own spacers. The soundbar is attractive when wall mounted due to its slim profile. The subwoofer has only been about 5-10 ft away, but has never had any wireless problems.
The soundbar also offers bluetooth audio, and I was able to connect after a bit of hassle. I can’t even comment on what was so difficult other than it just seemed to not show up for a minute. My iPhone eventually found it and connected without issue. Sound quality was good even though it was limited to A2DP (no APT-X support either in the iPhone or the DHT-S316). Bluetooth however is really the only option when it comes to connecting devices. While ubiquitous, there are other WiFi based alternatives that offer better sound and/or a more reliable connection. This soundbar lacks any sort of smarts here, and really just focuses on its core feature set and sound quality.
And sound quality wise is where the Denon shines. Music was crisp, and clear without being harsh. Bass reproduction out of the undisclosed sized subwoofer was also crisp and smooth - not boomy. Not only did it reproduce music excellently, with subtleties of songs highlighted well, but it did a great job with movies as well. The dialogue enhancement features lived up to their names, and did a great job at articulating the dialogue for TV shows and for late night listening. I found setting 2 sufficient for most of the shows we watched. I felt as though it did a good job keeping the balance of the rest of the sound without compromising. Movie mode still does a great job if you want just one setting.
I know both the soundbar and subwoofer are rated for 40w of power consumption (not necessarily output), but are plenty loud for all but the largest of family rooms. Ours are medium sized rooms, and in both cases the volume is more than adequate for a engrossing experience.
The remote offers the ability to change the input, audio mode, bass, and volume. It is a decent remote, but offers no backlight, or CEC functions. Essentially I would use it only to adjust sound settings and just use HDMI CEC volume control on the TV remote.
In conclusion, the DHT-S316 is a great intro-level sound bar. While its feature set is basic, it has the tech where it counts and focuses on great audio quality. DTS and Dolby decoding are great wins here assuming your TV has good support, as are HDMI ARC/CEC control. The biggest con is that you lose an HDMI input to get the ARC/CEC feature set which is an unfortunate oversight as many other devices offer passthrough. Sound wise, highs are crisp, mids are full, bass is solid and clear. The audio processing on board does a decent job, and it’s hard to fault Denon much here as in the price range the focus is on the right set of features (audio quality and ease of use). There are more featureful sound bars in this price range, but not many that sport this level of sound quality or audio processing. It’s a solid offering for those that focus on sound quality over whiz bang features.

I found this in the Magnolia room at my local Best Buy. Sounded good in the store and even better at home. I have other Denon products and they have always been outstanding.
