The best thing about the DJI Mic Mini microphone kit is how small the microphone transmitters are. The kit includes 2 and they are tiny and weigh nearly nothing. The mics come with a clip-on and a strong magnet and you can use either to attach it to your clothing. They are about a third of the weight of the DJI Mic 2’s. I can wear one on my shirt for multiple hours and easily forget that it’s there. The size makes it less noticeable to your viewers as well. If you have used DJI’s Mic or Mic 2 models you will notice the receiver itself is also smaller, which is great, but it means that some features had to be sacrificed, namely the LCD screen that lets you monitor input levels. There is a dial that allows a +/- 12dB level adjustment but you will probably want to do a quick test recording just to make sure the sound levels are where you want them to be as Mini is not capable of recording internal audio. The charging case has a spot for each transmitter, the receiver, and two adapters (only one for USB-C is included). Also included are two pairs of windscreens and a soft carrying case for everything. The receiver will fit into the case with the USB-C or Lightning adapter attached and even the mics can be put into the case with windscreens attached, which is really convenient. The case will charge the two mics and the receiver all at the same time and includes a USB-C port on the back to charge itself. The case features a button to unlock it which lessens the chance of it opening unintentionally. Setup couldn’t be any easier. The receiver attaches directly to a smartphone (or laptop) with the USB-C adapter that’s included. Older iPhones will need a Lightning adapter that unfortunately requires a separate purchase. You can also connect the receiver directly to a DSLR or mirrorless camera with the included 3.5mm TSX cable. The mics automatically pair to the receiver when they are placed in the case so on both my iPhone 15 Pro and Sony camera simply connecting the receiver and pressing record was all I needed to do. The only downside is the receiver does stick out awkwardly from the bottom of your phone. However, the receiver does have a USB-C port of its own and therefore allows passthrough charging to your phone. I was not able to get it to do passthrough recording to my portable SSD though. The performance is outstanding. I was able to get clear audio from both mics and was impressed with the automatic noise cancellation when I tested it with some fake airplane noises. While I could still hear the noise in the background it was faint, and my voice remained prominent and clear. There is a yellow LED on the mics that signals noise cancellation is enabled. You can tap the power button to toggle it on or off but note it will do it on both mics simultaneously. There are two levels of noise cancellation that can be set in the DJI Mimo app: Basic or Strong. In addition, the mics feature automatic limiting that prevents audio clipping so if you yell into the mic it should not distort. This can also be disabled in the app. I found the range from the mics to the transmitters to be very good, even indoors. There are other settings that can be adjusted in the Mimo app besides noise cancelling but for the most part the app is not needed in normal use. While everything has been positive so far, I did run into a few quirks with the Bluetooth connectivity and iOS. First, you can only update the firmware on iOS with Bluetooth, including the receiver. Android does not have this limitation. Secondly, while you can pair the microphones directly to your phone with Bluetooth and record audio without the receiver, I found that success in this mode will largely depends on the app you are using. The Voice Memo app used the Mic Mini as expected but the default Camera app did not. Even the more advanced Final Cut Camera app for iOS did not work. That app gives you the ability to change audio devices but the DJI Mic Mini was not available. Connecting the receiver allowed me to switch between the DJI Mic Mini and the Internal microphone in the Final Cut app as expected. I’m pretty sure both issues are limitations of iOS and not shortcomings of the product but thought I’d mention that it’s best to just use the receiver. You’ll get the best audio anyway over Bluetooth. Pros: - Includes 2 Tiny Mics w/ Clip-on and Magnet attachments. - Charging Case charges transmitter and receivers - Active Noise Cancelling Built-in - Bluetooth, USB-C or 3.5mm Wired Camera Connection - Passthrough USB-C Charging - Includes soft carrying case for charging case and accessories - Comes with 4 Windscreens - 400m of Range (unobstructed) - Syncs Directly with DJI’s Osmo Products - Excellent Battery Life Cons: - Quirks with Bluetooth and iPhone - Receiver sticks out awkwardly on phones - Does not record audio on its own Overall – these are great for content creators who are looking for lightweight, discreet microphones that just work out of the box-as long as you use the receiver.

    Another fantastic product from DJI

I’ll start by saying that I am a huge fan of DJI products. Being a professional photographer by trade, I have been using their drones and cameras for over 10 years. When DJI announced the first Mic system, I was very intrigued immediately and placed a pre-order. Since its release at the beginning of 2023, I have used it on numerous video shoots and it has performed flawlessly. In fact, so flawlessly that I didn’t see the need to upgrade to the Mic 2 which was released only one year later. The new DJI Mic Mini was released even quicker, entering the market less than one year after the Mic 2. For the types of photography and videography I do on a daily basis, I can’t think of a more innovative company that continually pushes the boundaries, and releases products on a fast track that I carry with me daily. ** IN THE BOX ** In the box you will receive two microphones ( TX transmitters), one receiver (RX receiver), two sets of puffy wind screens (one for lighter NR, one for higher NR), cables for charging (USB-C) and camera connect (3.5mm TRS), two magnets for the mics, a USB-C adapter for the RX to connect to other devices, the charging case, and a soft travel pouch. I have found that I can fit everything I need into the charging case itself, eliminating the need to carry the soft pouch if preferred (see review photos). I personally use a lot of gear on my shoots, so space is valuable to me. ** SETUP ** Setup was easy, but did take some time. DJI releases firmware updates very quickly and makes the update process easy on most of their products. In order to update the firmware on the Mic Mini, you need to have the current version of the DJI Mimo app on your device. Once you start the app and press the camera button, the app will search for nearby DJI devices. Remove a Mic from the charging case and press the Bluetooth pairing button. The app will locate the Mic and wirelessly update the firmware for you. This process is quick and easy, but you will need to repeat the process for both Mics separately. The RX receiver cannot connect to a device for a firmware update and must be physically connected to your device using the included USB-C adapter for updates. The only problem I have with this, is that I need to remove my phone case to perform updates, or to adjust settings via the Mimo app. To remedy this, I will purchase a separate USB-C extender adapter to see if that will work. I will leave a comment on this review with my findings. If that works, I can live with it. Otherwise, for me personally, having to remove my phone case to select the level of noise reduction in the app settings will be a hassle and take extra time. The Mics themselves have the ability to turn on/off noise canceling by a simple press of the power button when connected to the receiver. It would be great if they can figure out a way to give users a way to select the level of noise cancellation by short pressing the power button on the RX receiver. Possibly in a future firmware update? ** SIZE & BUILD QUALITY ** As with all DJI products, I feel like this product is built to last. I would go as far as saying I would be more worried I would lose one of the pieces in this kit, due to their small size, before I would actually break one. Weighing only 10 ounces per microphone, the size of these mics compared to the full size DJI Mic system, is quite astonishing. These are easier to conceal on clients and have close to the same end result, making the Mic Mini system an indispensable tool to carry at all times. DJI have also thoughtfully released both black and white versions of the mics making it even easier to conceal on clients depending on their attire. With the highly competitive price point, it is a no brainer to have both colors in my kit. ** FEATURES & REAL WORLD USE ** In my testing so far, I have found several things to like about the DJI Mic Mini and I can see where this affordable, yet still professional package, would benefit several types of creators. The audio recording these provide while feeding a DJI product, or while hooked directly up to a DSLR or Mirrorless camera system is clear and precise. With the two noise cancelling modes, one for interior, or light noise, one for exterior, or more noisy/windy environments, this small, affordable package is hard to beat. I personally use this with my Mirrorless Cinema camera to record walkthroughs with Real Estate Agents, and with my OSMO Action to record myself and my kids. In both scenarios, the DJI Mic Mini has performed as expected, and the microphones have produced excellent clear audio tracks to use in post production. While having the RX receiver on the hot shoe of my camera and the audio cable hooked up, I appreciate the fact that there is an included gain wheel on the RX receiver itself, allowing users to adjust the microphone levels directly from the receiver, instead of having to dive into a menu on your phone. Excellent! I am also very fond of the magnet system DJI have provided, giving users the ability to, for instance, place a magnet inside a shirt, and the microphone on the outside of the shirt instead of using the clip. The magnets are quite strong and hold the mic in position well, but I wouldn’t expect it to work as well through thicker fabric, or coats. The battery life hasn’t even come close to being an issue for me, as the charging case keeps them more than charged for every type of shoot I use them for. The range is also completely out of control in a good way. You can walk so far away from your camera and still have clear voice recordings, that it is really too far away to be anything I would ever use. After the mics are initially paired with the RX receiver, you simply remove everything from the charging case you need and it all connects quickly and automatically, so you are ready to shoot without wasting precious time. DJI has been at the forefront of innovation for years. With their wide range of excellent products, their replacement program, and timely firmware updates, they are a tech giant that has many tools I am proud to have in my kit. ** PROS ** Size, weight, magnet mounts, included wind screens, charging case Battery life and range The mics are easy to place and conceal Compatibility with other DJI products including the OSMO series Auto power on and connection Auto limiter ** CONS ** No internal recording backup like its big brothers Must connect RX receiver via USB-C to phone to adjust settings No 3.5mm mic input on either mic for lavalier mics (I don’t need it)

    A Superb Upgrade

I am quite excited about this product upgrade. I had considered getting the DJI Mic 2 just for its dual stereo mics. But the mini version addresses almost all my concerns. The new smaller size and improved case, that can easily fit in your pocket, is most excellent. In addition, having a total operating time of 48 hours versus 18 hours (Mic 2) is awesome. It now also has two levels of noise cancellation and an optional audio limiter to prevent clipping. But most important to me the transmitters went from 1oz (28g) to only 1/3oz (10g). The simple clip-on windscreens (in gray and black) are also much easier to use. The Mic Mini can be used with numerous devices, pretty much anything that allows a microphone input, can now easily support two mono/stereo wireless mics with a range of about 400', both supporting noise cancellation. I doubt I'll be able to use it on a motorcycle ride, but all the other situations where the on-camera mic is insufficient (meaning more than 20-30'). The DJI Mic Mini can also connect directly to a smartphone supporting Bluetooth, or any camera supporting a BT connection. That adds to the flexibility. The Mic Mini also comes with a direct USB C connector so the wireless receiver can connect directly to a (newer) iPhone or any Android Phone. There are many digital video cameras that support the same and if they don't the 3.5mm TRS connector is the most common means of connecting an external microphone. The first thing I did was a simple range test. Whenever the transmitter (mic) is connected solid green leds are displayed on the receiver and transmitter (mic). When it blinks green, it has lost its connection. I've previously measured 100 meters from a position in my front yard. At this distance (line of sight) the signal was just fine (receiver connected to my iPhone monitoring audio) at 330'. I moved 20 meters further (366'), and it was still fine, but I detected some drops with silence for too long. And at 330 meters, it struggled a bit more especially with long periods of silence. But the 400' mark seemed credible. I connected the mic via the strong magnets that connect to the back of the mic. These work very well, and won't damage fine shirts. And at 10g (1/3oz) they barely pull on the fabric. The magnet was plenty strong to attach through the thicker collar of a polo shirt. The quality of the audio at 300 meters seemed identical to the quality/level at 10 meters. So distance did not affect the levels of the audio. Excellent, I'm very pleased. I toyed with the two levels of noise cancellation, there was a difference and depending what background noise is one or the other might prove better. The audio limiter was much more interesting, I could literally scream into the mic, and the loudest levers were quite well tempered. This feature is very cool (it was not in the previous version). I then connected to a DJI Action 3 via USB-C to USB-C cable (not provided) and it worked perfectly. And the DJI app showed the signal levels (with several other controllable options). I also connected to another popular mini camera via a 3.5mm TRS/TRS cable, and I had two stereo mics being recorded (mixed together). And then I connected and captured video with my iPhone (15 pro); also no issues. I'm sure all video cameras with a 3.5mm external mic input will also worked fine. I have to compliment DJI for cutting the size and weight of the new mini mic and improving the feature set (and making them more affordable). And they've followed existing standards so that a single mic can still be used with devices accepting BT inputs. Something that should become more common (as supported by the DJI Action 5 and Pocket 3) in more products. I superb wireless microphone set!

Using this mic with Android for YouTube videos

I want to preface this review with 2 warnings if you intend to use this mic with an Android phone... 1. Make sure the model you want to pair to is compatible. (My S23 Ultra was not on the list, but luckily it does work!) 2. Understand that you will need a phone case that allows the receiver to be plugged in to your phone (mine was too "thick"). The main reason I purchased this mic was to eliminate background noise (chatter/music) while using my phone to film thrift store and flea market footage for my YouTube videos. It does a nice job. PROS: The sound is good quality without sounding artificial. The price is fair. It has two mics (for two people) which attach to your shirt using the built in clip or magnet. The case is compact, Both receiver and mics are small, lightweight and relatively inconspicuous. It has a good range and battery life. Battery charges quickly. Comes with a carrying case. CON: It does not have any internal recording or back up storage, it only records audio to the device that the receiver is plugged into. Overall I'm very happy with this mic.
