Great piece of drone kit for beginners

PROs - Great battery life and flight performance in wind - Under 250g – no registration for recreational use - Intuitive controls and video modes so any user can get good footage CONs - Can’t fly without a phone and app - Drone height adjustment when flying over objects can be jarring for some users - Lack of front facing sensors makes distance judging more difficult SUMMARY: An easy to fly kit built for somebody interested in getting into drone piloting/photography. DJI has a huge catalog of drones of varying types and features and sometimes if can feel a little intimidating selecting the right one. As I’ve flown and used the DJI Mini 2 SE over the past week, I’m convinced that this is the one of the best options for beginners that puts everything you need to fly in a small convenient storage bag while also not requiring some of the registration hurdles with the FAA that you might have heard about. I got the “fly more” kit, which includes a handy storage bag that holds everything that the drone comes with. It has 3 batteries total along with a sequential charging bank so that you can continuously swap and continue to fly when you are out and about. This bank (and everything else included) charges over USB C, but there is no charging brick – so if you don’t have one at home be sure and pick one up. The power bank does have a USB out port so you can actually use the batteries to charge the controller or your phone as well – a nifty inclusion for that hardware. The controller is standard with a compact form factor that packs away nicely. The joysticks are tucked on the bottom side of the controller and pop out and screw on. There is a nice metal knurling and rubber grip on the ends to help enable precise inputs. Overall, I found the controller comfortable to use with a subtle rubber grip on the back and a weight that wasn't too heavy to hold through multiple flights. In terms of other inputs there is a sliding toggle for changing modes as well as a large button for quickly pausing the drone if you get into a situation where you feel overwhelmed – this button will also return the drone home if you press and hold. On the top there is a springy scroll wheel for positioning the camera as well as the record button to take a picture or start/stop video depending on the mode. Before flying you extend the spring-loaded mount from the top and there is a cable tucked inside for plugging in your phone. I didn’t have any issues with my iPhone 14 Pro fitting in this mount with a case on and the mount still extended further to accommodate larger phones. *TIP* The controller has the ability to charge your phone via a setting that you can enable. The drone packs down to be extremely compact – the front propeller arms flip out while the back arms rotate backward to get the drone ready for flight. DJI drones at this point have undergone many design iterations, so I’m very impressed with the quality and design of this unit which is basically unchanged from the Mini SE and Mini 2. The camera has a 3 axis gimbal with a 2.7K camera (more on this later). There is a hatch on the back to open for inserting the battery, along with a readily accessible USB C and micro SD card slot. The props are easily replaced with the included Philips screw driver, though I haven’t had to do this yet. *TIP* - The first time you fly, I suggest finding a wide-open field where you can safely launch and land the drone. Keep a safe distance, but in addition to looking at the screen when you are piloting, also physically observe how the drone moves in relation to your inputs before relying solely on the screen. Overall, I found the Mini 2 SE very easy to pilot – it’s not as reactive as I would personally like, but in terms of ease of use it’s very beginner friendly. Registering and piloting the drone does require use of the DJI Fly app – unfortunately there isn’t a way to pilot the drone without a phone – so parent’s need to consider this if they are buying this for their children. The app launches automatically when you plug in and power on the controller. I live near an airport so I need to get an unlock authorization before I fly – something else to keep in mind depending on where you live. The app will tell you if this is required or not and it guides you through the steps so this is not a complicated process by any means. *TIP* If you’re used to video games you made be more comfortable changing the controls to mode 3 in settings. I flew the drone mainly around my back yard and overall it was a joy to fly – after some practice and getting used to the controls I was going around some of the trees in my backyard with ease. It might just be me, but the drone video does make things seem closer than they actually are. There is no front facing sensors like other drones which made it difficult for me to understand how close I actually was. I also noticed that flying over objects can cause the drone to change altitude to keep ample distance from the ground. This might be jarring for some users, but just keep this behavior in mind and consider your environment. During some of my flights, it was especially windy and the drone compensated really well while maintaining really smooth video. I got close to the 31 minute rating, but it was a little windy, but with the extra batteries I was able to pop one in and keep going. Overall camera video over the transmission link was very good with little stuttering or artifacting in the feed. DJI claims this drone has a 10km transmission distance utilizing their OcuSync 2.0 technology, but since I live in the city and haven't had a chance to go out of town I haven't had a great way to verify this. It is a great deal more than the previous Mini SE at 4km, so it should be more than sufficient for beginner users. For the camera quality itself I think it’s great considering the price of the unit – but in some cases their wasn’t enough dynamic range so in environments where I had both really bright and really dark areas, my shadows were far too dark. In well lit scenes the 2.7K 30 fps stabilized video looks really good. In addition to being easy to pilot, there are also several intelligent modes that DJI provides for easily shooting cinematic scenes. For example, you can have the drone rotate around your subject while rising up in a helical pattern or get a simple circular rotation around your subject. These were really easy to setup and use - and I got some great looking shots. Finally on the photography side of things you can use the panorama mode to capture wide and 360-degree shots automatically – something that I will find myself using a lot on my next trip.

When a colleague asked me about which drone I would recommend for a beginner like him, he mentioned about this drone, which is the cheapest in the DJI Mini line up. I did not recommend him the drone as I thought he would be better off getting a much more expensive one. I was wrong. This is a good drone to recommend for a beginner. Of course, you could spend much more money and you can’t go wrong with any of DJI Mini drone, Avata or even the Mavic series. However, DJI Mini 2 SE fly more combo is a good option to start for those who just want to try flying a drone recreationally. In my experience flying a drone as well as building and piloting RC quadcopter since more than tens of years ago, DJI Mini 2 SE somewhat surprises me with its performance and simplicity to fly. First thing to note about this drone is its weight, at below 250 grams this drone is exempted from FAA registration rules. Of course, piloting the drone still needs to follow Part 107 of FAA rules. Just because this ultra-light drone is exempted from FAA registration it doesn’t mean that we can fly the drone however we want. Far from it; the hardest thing about flying this drone I would imagine for a beginner is not about piloting or setting it up but it’s about understanding the rules applicable to drones. I cannot stress enough on how important it is to understand those rules before flying your drone for the first time. Almost everything you need for flying a drone is in the package. You just need a high-speed micro-SD card and you’re all set. The package comes with 3 batteries, which is enough to last you spending the almost the entire hour flying a drone. Charging the drone’s battery is easy as you just need to plug in the charger and all 3 batteries will be automatically charged. I fly the drone quite conservatively as I want to retain about 40% of battery capacity for every flight in order to make the battery lasts as many charge cycles as possible. You can push the drone’s battery to its limit but you will diminish its maximum capacity after each cycle much sooner and the battery will become useless much sooner. DJI rated the drone to fly for about 31 mins, however, it all comes down to a number different factor including wind, velocity and flying style. 12-15 minutes is actually enough for every flight. Anyone who owns a drone should know that charging and storing a lithium battery needs proper care and handling. Flying the drone is easy, there’s an onscreen tutorial to follow for first timers. For experience fliers, well, it’s all too easy. I really like how compact the drone is. The radio control transmitter holds iPhone 15 Pro Max without problem; however, I wish that it has a neck strap. There are several options to launch the drone, you can click the button on your phone screen or arming and launching the drone using the transmitter. The drone is a very capable flier. GPS lock is gained very fast and the drone is stable when flying stationary. Flying characteristic is quite nimble for the size. Even when using sports mode, the drone still flies steadily and predictably, which is good for beginners. There’s also normal mode and cinematic mode, which makes the drone flies slower and more steadily hence these modes are more useful if you want to record those awesome Youtube drone videos. For a drone this tiny, it performs well even in somewhat windy situations. DJI rated the wind resistance at 38 kph. Propellers noise is also quite manageable, it’s not awfully loud but you can definitely hear the sound even though it’s couple hundreds of feet away from you. Your phone will display all necessary information about the drone and gives you live visual feed. Most importantly it will tell you the position of the drone including distance and height relative to the launch position, which is useful to bring the drone home and land safely. There’s an automatic return to home feature that you can activate and if the drone loses radio transmission the feature will be automatically activated. This is a very important feature for a beginner. I tested the feature and the drone returned to the launch point quite accurately. There are several fun drone flying programmed modes, however, you need to exercise more caution when using these features as the drone is not equipped with anti-collision sensors. As for the camera, it performs quite well in compensating the drone movement. The camera is able to record at up to 2.7k resolution with 30fps. The drone, however, is actually meant for recording at full HD with 60 FPS, which is enough frame rates and resolution for recreation flying. I would go for higher framerates rather than higher resolution because higher frame rates give you more steady video as you make a pan movement with your drone’s camera. Video quality is quite good with pleasing colors and adequate sharpness. Small objects are clearly visible and sharp enough in the video. Picture quality, however, is another story. The quality of the 12 MP image is just not there yet. It’s passable for viewing in your computer screen and printing in a small photo paper. There are some grainy issues, which are all expected due to how small the lens and the sensor are. Overall image quality is actually not bad considering how limited the dynamic range that the sensor is able to output. For a beginner flier, you would much more likely to be surprised at how pleasing the video this drone is able to produce. The biggest problem about this drone is actually its mini size, which is not the drone’s fault. Under FAA rules, you can only fly this drone within your visual line of sight and you need to have a visual observer when you want to fly the drone by only looking at the live video feed in your phone. Because the drone is very small, it will still be difficult for a visual observer to keep track of the drone after it flies beyond several hundreds of feet. Is this a good drone combo that gives you the best bang for the buck? Yeah.

This unit was my first delving into the world of UAVs/UASs (unmanned aerial vehicles/systems) a.k.a. drones, and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it actually was to get started and flying. To begin, the unit is incredibly small compared to what I was expecting. The product picture as displayed is actually pretty accurate in that the remote control for the drone is about the size of the drone itself. This particular unit comes with three batteries, a charging station for the batteries, cables to connect to your phone, and a handy carrying bag in which to put everything. Nice! Downloading the application on my iPhone and connecting it to the remote control was a piece of cake. At first, I was a little confused at the inclusion of only USB-C and mini-USB cables with the unit, but when I pulled up the "grip" that holds the phone, I discovered a third connective cable that was a lightning cable for all iPhones but the most recent 15-series models. DJI markets this unit as weighing less than 250 grams, which means it does not need to be registered with the FAA for recreational purposes, so no complications there in wanting to set it up and fly it around for fun. (Commercial flying still must comply with 14 CFR Part 107, however. Luckily, though, my use is simply for fun at this point. It definitely was a lot lighter than I was expecting.) The application does a great job, however, of ensuring you are within appropriate airspace. When I first set up the unit, I was a little too close to a local airport and, while I was able to take off, the application notified me that the unit would automatically land in 45 seconds if I did not obtain the proper permissions to "unlock" flying in the area. If the GPS signal it receives is weak or not present, the unit will also not take off. (Again, as a recreational flyer, that all seems very reasonable to me.) Having not used drones before, I do not know if the projected 30 minute battery life is reasonable or not when compared to other units. Given that this particular model included three batteries, however, I suspect I could make that work for pretty much anything I wanted to do recreationally. I found the controls to be very simple to operate. After just a few minutes, I was able to fly around without even having to think about the controls. The unit is fast and responsive and also included some extra propeller blades. The unit folds up compactly into roughly the size of two playing card decks. When hovering, the unit did a very good job of keeping itself stable without any intervention on my part. The camera is 12 megapixels and capable of recording 4k video. I was a little disappointed to see that the unit did not include a microSD card, so if you want to record locally on the drone (as opposed to using the interface through your phone), be sure to pick up a microSD card that is Class 3 or better. From what I could find online, the drone can accommodate up to a 256GB card. In summary, I think this is a great unit for any new or amateur drone operator who is looking for a recreational drone that is easy to setup and use. Aside from just being fun to operate, at some point, I could see some non-recreational uses that would be very beneficial that could prompt some to actually register the unit with the FAA under Part 107, even though it is below the 250 gram threshold.

The DJI Mini2 SE combines a bunch of tech in a very small and lightweight drone. I am very familiar with DJI products starting with the Spark and upgrading to the Mavic 3 once I knew drones had a consistent place in my adventure gear. The Mini 2 SE completes the bundle and officially retires the Spark being basically the same size with serious upgrades. While the Mavic 3 is better in every way, the one advantage the Mini 2 SE brings to the table is size! It really fills a unique void when it comes to having flexibility. Since it weighs less than 250g, you won’t have to worry about current FAA regulations with registration for recreational flyers. BUT despite being so lightweight, DJI still estimates approx. 30 minutes of flight time which is HUGE if you wanted to utilize several of the DJI intelligent flight modes all on a single battery. Set up was easy having exposure the DJI fly app, but even if you are a new to drones they make it wicked easy to get out and flying. DJI does a phenomenal job educating and prepping the beginner how to safely fly their drone. The camera and intelligent fly modes helps you always capture the moment. One challenge I do see if the lack of battery level indication on the battery itself, when you insert the batteries in the charge dock included with the fly more combo its a guessing game when it comes to current battery levels. Only when all batteries are fully charged does it light up when the dock is connect to a power source. It will flash levels on the battery that is currently charging but doesn't highlight levels on the others in the charging dock. Outside of the minor inconveniences with the batteries and dock, everything else seems to be as expected. Flying with the DJI remote is easy for beginner to expert, having a smart phone with app connected to the remote makes it a breeze having access to all the necessary tech by easily utilizing your smart phone screen. A few additional benefits outside of the ease in flying is how well this drone performs in windy conditions, the 3-axis gimbal maintains a steady shot regardless of how hard the drone is working to fly smooth. In addition, how loud a drone is has always been a concern as to not ruin someone else’s outdoor experience. This drone is surprising quiet even when flying in challenging environments. I always recommend getting the bigger combo that includes extra batteries and replacement parts when available. This fly more combo comes with the usual extra propellers and necessary cables. The case is also just the right size to hold everything and still pack into a larger day size pack. I feel this drone having the ability to pack up into a hiking or biking backpack will quickly become a staple in all my future adventures. This done is the total package for someone looking for a smaller, somewhat entry level drone to aways have available to capture those epic adventures. High Five DJI for another outstanding drone!

THIS… Is the DJI Mini SE Fly more bundle and it is truly a great entry point into the world of drones, with the accessories to not only get you flying, but keep you flying longer. With a remarkably small frame paired to a quality stabilized 1080p camera, this drone is poised to be a great entry level drone that isn’t a waste of money. The nice thing about flying the Mini 2 SE is that the app, feel and the way it flys is almost identical to its larger brothers (minus some horsepower and camera features). With all that being said, lets take a look at the Mini SE paired to the fly more package! Remote =========== The remote provided is honestly super awesome for not having a screen built in. The remote uses your phone and the DJI app to fly the drone while also charging your phone so you don’t have to worry about your phone dying mid flight. I find the ergonomics to be quite easy and also allowing this drone to still be budget friendly with the option to upgrade the remote in the future should you desire. The remote packs away easy and the thumb joy sticks easily screw in and out and store in the bottom of the remote. Flight Time =========== This is what we are all here about. I have flown this drone more than a few times now, and I am quite happy with the battery life. That being said, where I live is rather windy so I was only able to manage a maximum of 28 minutes of flight time compared to the advertised 34… which still isnt too bad considering you get 3 batteries. That being said, most of the other times I was only managing around 18 minutes per battery, I was also a couple hundred meters up in the air at any given time in high wind conditions. Ascending and descending at max speed in sport mode was a blast, and then being able to transition it over to a more calm cinematic mode, allowing me to get vibration free videos on the same flight. I never was pushed around by the wind and to be quite honest it felt quite similar flying the Mini as it does my Mavic 3. This reinforces my idea that this is a great place to start and be able to transfer your skills up should you choose to upgrade your drone in the future. I also liked that this drone was able to be flown indoors a bit better, still had some chaos but in my large gym I was able to get some really cool videos benching and on machines. Camera =========== The camera is actually shockingly good. On my Iphone it is quite competitive on quality to the Mavic 2 and 3, and there is no visible shake or vibration when flying. equipped 1/2.3-inch CMOS camera delivers 12MP photos and up to 2.7K videos. On top of that it also has 4x digital zoom which was still shockingly stable even all the way zoomed in. Aesthetic =========== The aesthetics follow the trend for DJI drones, a shark gray paired to an aggressive looking drone. Coming in at around 249 grams and having a super nice case that wraps around the camera gimbal, I don’t have to worry about putting it in my camera bag since it is pretty well taken care of. I also just think the drone looks cool and is made of a really nice plastic, no part of it feels cheap even though it is very light weight! Cool Features =========== --DJI has an auto home feature that works REALLY well. As in I will take the drone off from a tree stump and at any point in time I can recall it to home and it will auto fly back and pretty much always land back on that stump. --“Up to” 10km range, I wasn’t able to get close to 10km… but I got really consistent results around 6-7km in a suburban setting. --Varying modes for flying the drone! Sport, cine and more… the drone can also just be a very fun drone to fly around and isn’t locked in on just being for filming, I mean I always have a blast flying it. --Can fly in 23mph winds, I have flown it in 18/19mph winds and wasn’t even noticeable, just be mindful that the higher the wind the faster the battery will be eaten up. --Almost impossible to fly into something, crash or run out of battery. If you get close to hitting something it will auto move away or not allow you to move a certain direction (this feature can be turned off). When the battery is running low it will also beep noises and announce that the battery is running low, I mean really dummy proof. For me to crash this drone I would have to try to do it, which would involve turning off all the safety features. I think there is a remarkable improvement in the detection capabilities of the Mini compared to the older DJI drones and another reason why this is a great beginner drone and a drone you can grow into. Conclusion =========== To wrap it all up, DJI really hit the nail on the head here. They KILLED IT with the mini 2 se and you can tell the people working on it are not only passionate about the product, but also likely use it as well as they are removing all the headaches and pinches from the original mavic mini and spark and eliminating them. From the significantly upgraded camera, to the increase in flight time and new features - if you are in the market for a new highly capable drone that also isn't the price of the Mavic’s - there has never been a better time to get one! As always, if you don’t like the product as well, Bestbuy’s return policy and procedures are so easy, you should give it a try! The Mavic 3 classic is truly a class leading product and I would recommend it to anyone looking! TL;DR - Best entry level drone on the market, compared to prior generations and what is new on the market, this is actually a steal with addition blades, 3 batteries and a great camera paired to a decent fly time.

For those looking to get into the drone scene without breaking the bank, but also not have a frustrating time, then this may be the package to get. The DJI Mini 2 SE is a great entry point with its ease of use and lower price point. The ability to carry the drone with controller in a small compact bag gives it a lot of potential for hikers going long distances. Starting off with the drone itself, it is extremely compact. When folded up, it is smaller than my hand and weighs less than a pound. The way it folds up allows you to safely carry it around without any worries about breaking any of the components. This package comes with 6 pairs of spare blades, and swapping them is easy enough with the included screwdriver. Overall, it's a good package and no complaints here. Moving on to the controller, it is a decent size and feels good in the hands to operate. Like the drone, it stores nicely with the joysticks stowed away as part of the controller itself. The phone holder doubles as an antennae, and holds any smartphone very securely. If there is a complaint here, it's that it barely fits an iPhone Max model, so you will need to take the case off to use it if you have a larger phone. The buttons on the controller have purpose and are all useful. I did not find that I needed any more buttons outside of the ones provided in the app itself. Lastly, the app itself from the iOS perspective is extremely friendly. If you are coming in at this as a beginner, you'll find many useful information right off the bat from flying zones to tutorial videos. It can be overwhelming at first, but the app does a great job simplifying the controls in the flying screen. Having said that, there are many videos on youtube that will give you a great explanation as well. For operating the drone, the specs are impressive given the price point. A 30 minute battery, but it will drain faster than you realize usually due to wind. This will be something you'll have to be conscious of, if you take 15 minutes to fly out you may not have enough juice to come back especially if going against the wind. With that said, you will find you can still go pretty far in 15 minutes, way within the 10km range of the receiver. The camera does a good job at staying level giving you the best shots. Very rarely though, it is a little crooked but I find it does sort itself out eventually or you can always fix it with software later. Camera controls are easily to use, allow you to either fully let the app control all the settings, or yourself down to the iso and shutter speeds. The included video modes let you have some creative shots, but you do have to be careful as the drone does not have any backwards sensors and will run into things. I find that these kind of shots are a little hit or miss and sometimes you have to reshoot so the drone has a second chance to capture your target in the sensor. Overall, it is a satisfying experience given the price point. In conclusion, this is a great package to get and play around with as your first drone experience. If you're looking for something with more features but still lightweight, you'll have to move up in models. But for what this is, this is a great drone for anyone.

This project has excited expectations aside from one of the battery being a dud on arrival.

I have had it in my hands for a short time but it flies well, the camera is a little lacking but it rests well
