The DJI Mini 2 SE Fly More Combo is an excellent choice for anyone who relishes outdoor adventures or simply enjoys capturing breathtaking footage. Here's why it's a must-have for both novices and seasoned drone enthusiasts:
Compact and Portable
This drone's compact size makes it a go-to companion for your outdoor escapades. Weighing a mere 250 grams, it's incredibly lightweight and convenient to transport, whether you're embarking on long hikes, road trips, or spending a day at the beach.
Impressive Video Quality and User-Friendly Controls
The Mini 2 SE delivers impressive video quality, ensuring your footage captures every detail and moment in vivid clarity. Even if you're new to drones, you'll find the Mini 2 SE incredibly easy to control, making it a fantastic choice for novices and experts alike. Unless you are making professional grade videos, the quality of the video from this drone is perfect for content creators and for family events.
Convenient Storage and Transportation
One standout feature is the included bag, perfect for safely storing and transporting the drone without worrying about damage. This added convenience ensures your drone remains protected on your journeys. It is small enough to fit in my backpack or carry-on luggage which means I can take the drone everywhere I go without it being an inconvenience.
Whisper-Quiet Flight
Compared to other mini drones, the Mini 2 SE operates with significantly less noise, preserving the serenity of your surroundings while you capture stunning aerial shots. I hate it when people use noisy drones when I am out on a hike and while this drone minimizes that disturbance I still asked the people around me if they minded me flying the drone for 5-10 minutes. No one had any issues and two different people mentioned the drone was much quieter than other drones they have had the displeasure of being exposed to when trying to relax on a hike.
Zoom In with Precision
The camera's 3x zoom function is a game-changer, allowing you to focus on specific subjects or areas, bringing your creativity to new heights.
User-Friendly Flight Experience
Even if you're a novice pilot, you'll find this drone fairly easy to fly and maneuver. However, I'd recommend practicing in open spaces away from buildings or water to master your skills safely. The drone handles wind well, but the more it fights the wind the faster the battery will drain, so I would not recommend flying the drone over water until you feel comfortable with it.
Automatic 'Return-to-Home' Feature
The Mini 2 SE boasts an automatic 'return-to-home' function, proving invaluable when the battery runs low. Additionally, it simplifies bringing the drone back home quickly, eliminating the need for manual navigation. I got an error a few times when trying to use this feature. It only worked half the time.
Minor Flight Time Concerns
One minor drawback is the drone's flight time, which maxes out at 30 minutes under perfect conditions. It's worth considering if you plan to capture longer videos or cover vast areas. Also the return to home function was hit or miss but not a deal breaker for me. However, if you're advertising the feature then it better work more than 50% of the time.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend the DJI Mini 2 SE Fly More Combo to both newcomers and seasoned drone enthusiasts. Its compact design, ease of use, impressive camera, and thoughtful features make it an excellent tool for unleashing your creativity in the skies. While the flight time may leave a bit to be desired, the Mini 2 SE remains a versatile and dependable choice for capturing breathtaking aerial content.

So, you are looking to buy a drone for yourself or a gift for someone. It sounds fun, cheeky, and a hoot to own, right? The DJI Mini 2 SE fits that bill very well. However, before you buy this drone, or any drone, as a matter of fact, there has to be some ‘research’ and informed decisions that have to be made. Much of it does have to do with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and your adherence to airspace and rules for using a drone safely. If that is not your cup of tea, I hate to say this; owning a drone would not be in the picture for you. FAA regulations have been developed for a specific reason, and in the last six years that I have owned a drone, the regulations have changed with new requirements.
First off, you have to understand the FAA regulations for the drone. This drone is 0.55 lbs or less than 250 grams. FAA regulations require that the drone be registered except under limited recreational operations. Any Drone registered under limited Recreational Operations cannot be flown under Part 107, which commercial drone operators must fly under. Regardless of the drone's weight, It must be registered with the FAA before it can be flown. As of September 16, 2023, the FAA mandates the “Remote ID” requirement, which requires all drones to be registered, and all drones that fly in the US Airspace must have a Remote ID enabled unless it is not physically possible to add one, which in case you can only fly in “FRIA” locations (areas where Remote ID is not required in laymen terms). As part of the Remote ID requirement, registration is required, and you have to provide the serial number and the owner of the drone’s information; the drone must be marked with the registration information to show it is registered. Remote ID broadcasts identification and location information for the drone and where it takes off from, and this information is public to receive but to obtain personal information, only an authorized entity (law enforcement, etc) can request personal information tied to the drone.
Now that I have scared you enough, do you still want to get a drone? If the answer is yes, this is the process of getting your drone registered and processed so you can fly safely. The first thing is to register the drone at ‘https://faadronezone-access.faa.gov’ . As part of the registration process, FAA encourages you to pass the “The Recreational UAS Safety Test” (TRUST) and carry the proof of passing the test. There are several providers of TRUST, and the FAA provides a page with all the authorized education providers for the TRUST exam. This is a stark difference from Part 107 UAS that I had to take and pass years ago to fly my DJI Spark. If you have taken and passed the Part 107, and are “current” with the 24-month recurrent training requirement, you may fly this commercially (if registered commercial). Once you have registered your drone with your physical mailing address, email, phone number, make and model of your drone, and your specific remote ID serial number provided by the manufacturer and paid the requisite $5 to the FAA, you are ready to fly.
To fly this drone recreationally, you must adhere to the air space requirements, fly recreationally no higher than 400 feet, in a direct visual line of sight, and not over people. An app that I find very useful to figure out if you are good to fly is “B4U FLY” and “OpenSky” which is available for both android and iOS, to help you identify the airspace around where you plan to take off, and what permissions you require if any.
So now that we got the legal stuff out of the way let's introduce you to the new DJI Mini 2 SE, a new drone for recreational user who wants to fly their drone to get some beautiful images and video occasionally. The DJI SE 2 has some neat features I wish my previous drone, a DJI Spark, had. As with most technologies, the newer tech comes with enhancements, and in this case, needed enhancements. I like the 31-minute run time, higher wind resistance to flight, various intelligent modes that help it to be a more user-friendly drone to live with, and the fly more combo, which in this case has plenty of replacement parts, including spare rotor blades, and spare batteries in a lovely carry case. The drone comes with a remote control that allows you to use the drone without the phone for a casual user. The drone features a 3-axis gimbaled camera that can shoot 2.7K to document your video highlights from an elevated perspective.
If you want the advanced features, you will require an app. The app store experience of DJI has changed; while the DJI Fly app is available on iOS from the Apple app store, the equivalent app is not available on Google and requires you to install an APK file to side-load the program into your phone. If you aren't comfortable doing so, use an iOS-based iPhone or use one of the 3rd party apps available, like Litchi, which is a well-supported paid app. You do not require the phone interface to fly this drone, as the drone comes with a remote controller that works for flying for the casual user. By using the app, you are going to be able to see parameters like signal strength, flying mode, altitude, distance, and battery level, and you can also use the video broadcast to help stage your video shot. The app also enables intelligent modes, specifically those beautiful rotating-around-you and moving-away videos that are so popular among influencers. The app also allows for one-touch landing and take-off and return to home. If you choose to not use an app, your controller will limit you to 90 feet in height and about 150 feet in distance.
As a long-time drone user, I do have some concerns with DJI Mini 2 SE. My past experience with the DJI Spark and the lack of availability of new batteries made my old drone a brick. While DJI has started to produce a limited run of new batteries for that drone, the concern still exists. DJI drones use a battery management system (BMS) that is VERY sensitive to improper use. If you fly regularly (weekly), you MUST store batteries at least 60-80% and charge them up regularly. If they are unused regularly, and you fly once a month, or you plan to store them long-term, the batteries should be at 40-60%. If the batteries go below 10% power, the cells will get damaged, and it is almost impossible to get them back into working order without buying new batteries. So, it's best to set a reminder to charge them once every 2-3 months if you do not use the drone. Unlike most consumer products that are available on the market, drones, in general, are higher maintenance, especially when it comes to batteries. The included manual has several pages relating to the battery use and storage. Pay attention to this as this is the most critical aspect for a long fruitful life with drones.
Overall, this DJI Mini 2 SE is an excellent drone. It's compact, and I like that it's very light. There is plenty of flight time and valuable features. You will have to learn to fly and will crash a few times; I know I did when I first started. DJI Mini 2 SE is a good beginner-friendly drone that would bring joy to the casual pilot. Please read the excellent user manual documentation from DJI’s website, as this can be a complicated machine without that knowledge. Be conscious of your surroundings when flying, and follow the FAA rules and airspace requirements. If you plan to travel to a foreign destination, be aware of the local regulations not only at your destination but also in transit countries, as drone laws vary from country to country. Be safe, fly safe!

First Time Flyer...and Loving It!!

The DJI Mini 2 SE has been a blast to play with thus far. I am a first time drone pilot, so don’t expect super awesome details in this review, but I’ll do my best. I wanted something that didn’t need FAA registration for my first foray into drone life. This drone comes in at the max weight possible without needing registration. Keep that in mind if you decide you want to add hardware. Payload drops, landing gear, pop guards, could put you over the FAA limit. I also didn’t want to spend a fortune to see if I would enjoy the hobby. This drone comes in with what I feel is great value at its price point.
Setup was a little intimidating because I’m a complete novice. I found the quick start guide confusing and quickly abandoned it and just went with my gut. I’m a technology guy, so I found it easier to trust my instincts that use their manual. Once I got the app on my smartphone, I was able to quickly walk through setup and prepare to fly.
I was scared half to death the first time I sent it up, but it has a launch feature that I found super helpful. Hit a button on the remote and it takes off and hovers about 5 ft. in the air. From there I was able to fiddle with the controls in my own yard while I got used to how it moves. There are three modes, cinema, normal, and sport. Cinema is the slowest speed, so I’ve been learning on that setting. There are a lot of tall trees in my neighborhood, so I have to fly pretty high if I want to range out of my own yard. I’ve really only flown a couple of square block or so at this point, but I haven’t experienced any issues at all.
I do know that this drone doesn’t have collision detection. That freaks me out a bit, but since I know that, I’ve been extra careful and I haven’t run into anything. I think this comes into play a bit more when using some of the preset video recording shots that you can use. Make sure you are clear of obstacles before you send it off to do a corkscrew maneuver. If you do sent it off to take a preset shot and realize there is an obstacle, you can hit the pause button the remote to stop it in it’s tracks. It also has a return home feature and a landing mode, so it’s pretty safe and simple. I haven’t needed it, but there is a find my drone feature should you loose it. I believe it will even return home automatically if the battery is getting low or it loses connection to the remote.
I am impressed with the camera. I believe it is 2.7K. I find both the still shots and the video clips (30fps) to be very crisp. I will note that it really only has one setting for the camera. You can’t switch to black and white, or vivid, or anything like that. You get what you get and have to post edit if you want to change the look. It does struggle a bit when looking into the sun, so I find it’s best to keep bright lights to the back of the camera when possible. They do sell after market lens attachments that will change the look of your pics and vids. It shoots in 16:9, so the content is best viewed on a TV or something wide screen as opposed to the square formats that some social media platforms use. This drone doesn’t have built in storage, so you’ll need to pick up a micro SD card. 32-64gb should do the trick since it isn’t shooting in 4k.
I have the fly more package. It’s very nice having everything in a zipped shoulder bag when I want to head out. With three batteries, I get about 90 minutes of flight time. It’s longer than you think. So far, I have never run all three of them down in a single outing. I like that the charging station, which can hold all three batteries at the same time, and the remote are simple USB-C. No proprietary cables. You can also charge a battery while it is in the drone with USB-C. It seems to take about 90 minutes for a full charge on a single battery.
I’ve looked at the next up models from DJI. There is a price leap to the mini 3 and beyond. You get a lot of neat features, collision detection, 4K, extended flight times, different camera settings, etc. If you know you are going to by flying and capturing video, you may want to jump immediately to that next tier, but if you’re like me, a hobbyist that doesn’t need a lot of bells and whistles, the Mini 2 SE is pretty spectacular for its price point. From what I read, DJI is king in the economy tier, and I haven’t experienced anything to make me disagree.

Mighty punch in a tiny package.

This is my first experience with a drone, and I have to say I am floored. This tiny package packs a big punch.
Lets begin with the setup - In the box, you ofcourse get the drone itself that has a protection belt around the body to protect the rotors from getting bent in travel. The remote controller itself has a small cable that connects to your phone. One end is USB-C and the default is lightning, but in the box you get an option for USB-C to USB-C (which I used) and also a USB-C to micro-USB if that is what your phone supports. The joysticks are tucked away nicely at the bottom of the RC, so there is no danger of them bending and breaking when packed away.
The main thing I struggled with is the App itself, there is a link to DJI's site on the quick start pamphlet, and the video says "download the app from the app store", so that's what I did. However, apparently the app on the Google Play Store atleast is the incorrect app, it does not work - it will show that its connected to the drone, but won't transmit any video and you won't be able to fly. It will keep pushing some paid premium plan, which thankfully I never clicked on. You never know, where that info is going. After struggling for a while I uninstalled that app, and went back to DJI's website - below the actual video is a link to download the app as an apk file. So you are essentially side loading the true app. Not a very trustworthy experience. And then on this sideloaded app, you have to provide your DJI username/pwd. Proceed with caution.
Once you have the right app, though everything is smooth sailing, it immediately recognized the drone and connected and I was able to fly it in no time (oh, don't forget to remove the outer hard plastic cover protecting the camera).
The batteries initially are not fully charged, so you have to charge both your RC and drone battery, which I had to within 10 mins of the 1st flight. In fact, even with full charges the drone is not giving me a lot of battery life..., need to experiment with a bit more. There are a total of 3 batteries, that you can store and charge together, so you can quick switch when running low, but it's still annoying.
Post all of this initial setup, the actual control and use of the drone is super simple, and super enjoyable. Make sure you've taken all the right steps to register with FAA's drone zone site - you will need to pass a quick written exam, pay for registration for 3 years and write the registration# on the drone somewhere.
Now stick in an SD card into the drone, and you are off to the races (if you don't have an SD card you will be limited to 720p video and stills - stored directly on your phone instead).
The clarity of the camera is breathtaking, and the controls are intuitive. You have a 2x zoom on the app, and there are dedicated RC buttons - left trigger position wheel for a 90 deg up/down tilt and a right trigger to take pics or video. I have been flying it around the park in my neighborhood - taking pics of the different birds in my area, and its mind blowing to see what the drone sees at a height of 300ft - I can see the other parks in my area, and I can see the bay in the distant, and even follow cars on the freeway. I have taken it to the nearby lake and its been able to capture some serene videos over the water. Still more to explore and I hope to take it to Yosemite next week - know its not allowed in the actual national park, but I will give it a try nearby - always remember to use the B4UFLY app, to ensure that there are no restrictions in your area and you are cleared for take off. And remember to honor everyone else's privacy.

Great Little Drone

I've always been curious about drones and have wanted to pick one up, but didn't want to spend the large amount of money or get an overly large device. I've used DJI products in the past, most notably a gimbal for my iPhone, so when I saw the mini drone, I thought why not give it a shot?
Out of the box, you get the drone, obviously, the controller pad, 3 batteries, the battery charger, and several connector cables. The mini is designed to be controlled in partnership with a smartphone, so it comes with a USB-C connecter, and a Lightning for iPhone 14 or older. Since I recently picked up the new iPhone 15, I set it up using the USB-C connection.
The batteries, controller, and battery charging pack are all designed to be charged together, which was really cool to see. The charger pack has slots for all 3 batteries, plus a port to connect a cable and charge the battery in the controller. I had to use my own, 96-w charging brick, because there wasn't one in the bag that I saw. So I left it sit overnight and when I came back to check in the morning, I had 3 fully charged batteries and a fully charged controller.
Downloading the required DJI app went smoothly, and in minutes, I was walking through the tutorial and was off in flight. The mini advertises about a 30 minute battery life, which I have to believe is about 10 minutes per battery because after a few practice runs of just a few minutes, the battery I used was already showing only 50%, so just something to watch out for.
There was a bit of a drift when I was testing it out, not sure if it was mild wind currents that I couldn't really feel or if there was analog drift. DJI recommends using this on a calm day, and I can see why. The drone can easily drift where you might not want if the wind isn't in your favor.
The app allows you to see what the camera in the drone sees, and adjust settings to capture the image and video that you desire. I was impressed by how well the camera did, even in lower light as the sun was going down. All in all, I'm really happy with it, it's a fun toy that packs up nicely and doesn't take up much space. We're already planning on using it on our next scout camping trip to track our hike and get some cool shots for our pack's social media site.

Being new to drones, I was interested to see if this drone would be user friendly and intuitive for a beginner. This drone was incredibly easy to setup and I was flying in a short amount of time.
This drone is incredibly light. It’s very easy to carry in the provided carry bag. The bag is great to have since the drone is not waterproof and can protect the unit when necessary.
This is a good time to point out that the difference between the SE and this package (fly more condo) is you get extra items like th bag, extra battery, extra propellers, propeller bag, etc. just know you can purchase these items separately it they are nice to have.
The controller is comfortable to hold and is very easy to use. Attaching your phone is easy and snug.
The picture quality is excellent. I have no complaints about the quality.
The height and distance this can fly is amazing. It can fly to a height of 4000 meters and supports up to 10km of HD video transmission. I did not fly it nearly that far since I’m new but I did fly from 1/2 mile to full mile away with no issue.
This is a solid drone with great features at a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend.

I had a lot of small issues setting this up for use. First, the scan codes, none of them, went directly to where they needed to go, it was a hunt to find what was needed on the websites. Be aware that there is not an app on a trusted app store, you need to side load an APK file for this app and create an account on their website, and if you are uncomfortable with that, you will not want this drone. Also it does not have onboard memory and you need to insert a micro SD/TF card to be able to use it normally. After all that, you will have to wait about 15 minutes while the drone and the software updates. I had problems with the drone "activating" and binding to the controller and had to reset the drone and controller and try again multi-times till if finally worked. It is nice in that it gives you warnings about the SD card being missing if you forgot to put one in, and that the GPS signal is weak if you are inside. Once it is finally all setup, this is a nice drone to control and fly, the controller holds your cell phone quite securely and is intuitive to use. There are a lot of features packed into this little drone and if you can get past the setup and requirements and lack of an a trusted app store App, this is a nice setup. The video quality is very good, and don't forget that you need to remove the cover over the gimbal camera before flight! The fold up feature and security features like the gimbal cover and the strap to hold everything in place when folded up for storage is great, the best I've seen for a mini drone, and very easy to use. It comes with three batteries, and the charge case it comes with for the batteries is also very well thought out. You can charge your batteries away from power in the charge case while you are flying with the third battery and swap them out when needed. I would definitely recommend for those looking to get more serious from a basic beginner drone, but not ready to take the step to an FAA licensed drone.
