Best small drone on the market

I consider myself to be an amateur drone enthusiast. I have a DJI Phantom 4 that I use a lot but it can be a cumbersome process to get it up and flying. Also, when I'm at a place like the beach or public park, peoples' demeanor changes whenever I start flying around my Phantom 4. I always get asked, at least once, "you're not going to follow me, are you?" I get it, the Phantom 4 is a big, white, noisy drone flying overhead and people don't like being under surveillance. Enter the newer "pocket" drones. I really enjoy these as it normally takes just a few seconds for them to get up and flying, they're extremely portable, and people are often more curious about them instead of being hesitant. So far, the pocket drone market has been filled with units that are just OK. They all have at least one major drawback and a bunch of others that led me to return them. The Hover Camera was a nice concept but it has zero wind resistance (so videos and photos were almost always titled), the facial tracking features weren't very accurate, and there weren't any safety features (aside from the cage around the props). The Zerotech Dobby was alright but video was way too wobbly because the camera wasn't on any sort of gimbal system, video quality also left a lot to be desired (my $200 point-and-shoot camera took better videos). Lastly, there was the Yuneec Breeze. It can record in up to 4K or 1080p with electronic image stabilization but, even with stabilization enabled, the video was wobbly. Also, if I flew too fast left or right, large portions of black would pop up in the video as the software tried to correct for it. People often argue for the Yuneec Breeze because it records in 4K but the video that it produces is a mess. I would rather have solid 1080p video than what the Breeze produces. Enter the DJI Spark. This is DJI's first attempt at making a small, palm-sized drone to compete with the models (and more) I previously listed. This is, without a doubt, the best pocket drone on the market. It should be too because the Spark carries a higher price tag. This starts at $499 whereas the Yuneec Breeze is $100 less and comes with more accessories (mainly two batteries and two sets of extra props). But the added $100 for the Spark is well worth it. You can read about the Spark's specs on Best Buy's and DJI's websites so I won't get too much into those specifics. I will break the review down and discuss still image quality, video quality, and ease of use. First, the still image quality is fine. The Spark has a 12MP camera that takes some pretty wide shots without having the fish-eye look. The reduced sensor size means you won't get a lot of detail in HDR situations but the images are still pretty good. Video quality is also really good. This is the area where people will complain the most because the Spark lacks 4K recording but I'm perfectly fine with it. The Spark records mpeg-4 AVC video at 1080p, 30fps and a bitrate of 24Mbps. It is more than enough for anyone who isn't looking to do professional videography. The camera is on a 2-axis gimbal and DJI has also implemented software stabilization. Resulting videos are smoother than any other pocket drone on the market without having any wobble or black areas where the software just can't catch up. Videos look great on my desktop monitors, iPad Pro, HDTV, and even projector. I can't see any compression artifacts and you really have to (digitally/artificially) zoom in before you start seeing the benefits of 4K. The Spark's 1080p quality is top notch and I don't really see the lack of 4K as being nothing more than a small nuisance especially when DJI drones don't support HDR10 and/or Dolby Color (yet). Until then, there isn't much benefit to recording in 4K other than to push the pixels. Lastly, there's ease of use. This is the easiest DJI drone to get up and running. I can launch the drone, take a picture, and have it land all in 45 seconds without even having to use a controller or my phone. The gesture controls are pretty solid and work well. Once in tracking mode, the Spark does a good job of following me around. I can then raise my hands, make a square in front of my face, and it will take a picture after a 3-second countdown. It really is that easy to take a picture. Flying with a smartphone is surprisingly easy and tactile. It isn't as tactile as using a physical remote but I absolutely hated flying the other pocket drones with my phone. DJI's software (which runs best on iOS devices and often crashes on Android phones/tablets) provides smooth controls with audible notifications when something is going to happen. My phone vibrates whenever it registers that my thumb is on one of the virtual joysticks so I know when I have control of the Spark without having to look down. DJI also included more advanced, yet still easy to use, video recording options. One where the Spark points its camera straight down and flies straight up, another where it locks onto a subject (and not just some random point on the ground like EVERY other drone of this size) and circles around them, one mode where the Spark keeps a subject in the center frame and flies up and away at a diagonal angle, and one other mode where it locks onto a subject and spirals up and away while keeping them in the center frame. The main difference here with the Spark is that it actually locks onto a subject. All other drones in this size category keep their cameras fixed. They might say that they're locked onto you but they really aren't, they're locked onto a fixed point. You can move while the Spark is recording video in either one of these modes and the camera will follow you while the drone is still moving. There are other modes as well that require a bit more thinking just so you don't crash the Spark (it will follow you from the side). DJI included ground and front facing sensors, the same as the Mavic Pro and Phantom 4. You won't get the upward, rear, and side sensors like with the Phantom 4 Pro but that's fine so long as you pay attention. DJI lists the Spark as having a 16-minute flight time and I can normally fly for a good 13 minutes before the DJI Go 4 app begins requesting that I bring the Spark back home. The Spark has GPS, return to home, and other advanced features found in the Phantom 4 and Mavic Pro. DJI also included a Styrofoam case for the Spark and it's about the same size as a case used to hold fold-flat headphones (like the Bose QC35's or Sony MDR-1000X). I can easily throw it in a backpack or messenger back and take it with me anywhere. The case is large enough to hold the Spark, charger and USB cable, and two sets of extra props. I ended up buying an different carrying case online as I want to bring two additional batteries with me. I have enjoyed using the Spark so much that my Phantom 4 will become my backup drone. It's just so easy and quick to get the Spark flying and recording media. This is definitely a good first purchase for anyone who has been looking into drone flying. It's also a good secondary drone for people who want something that's even more portable than the Mavic Pro while still being capable of recording high quality photos and videos. You can buy a dedicated remote if you really want to extend the range and speed of the Spark but I'm fine using just my phone.

I wanted a drone that wasn't a toy and could take some aerial shots of my home and recreational photos. I did a little online research and the DJI Spark got consistently positive reviews for beginners who wanted to learn to fly a "real" drone that does more than simply challenge you to maintain its position in the air. I connected to my Android phone and though that seems convenient I will eventually be buying the DJI remote for my Spark. The reason I mention this is that with my phone I'm restricted in my speeds and my range. That being said the DJI Go 4 app works very well and is easy to use. The Spark uses multiple GPS signals with its built in GPS receiver to maintain its position while taking pictures and to also allow it to return home (RTH) when you want to end the flight or when the battery reaches critical low level. The first flights went well, I suggest researching various YouTube videos, start with DJI's videos and then look at productions by "Kloo Gee" and "jeven dovey" to begin with. They offer experience driven, common sense advice about important things you really need to know and how to drill down to understand them and fly your Spark safely and effectively and have a little fun at the same time and to also take pictures and videos worth watching while it's flying. I do want to say I've only taken 16 flights so far but I really enjoy my Spark. I've bought 2 spare batteries, an aftermarket landing gear and a basic case to organize all my gear. I have been flying in temperatures ranging from 25°F to 60°F, the low temperatures do affect battery life and I get flying times ranging from 9 to 13 minutes. The Spark weighs in at .66 lbs and as that's greater than .55 lbs you must register your Spark with the FAA prior to your first flight. Remember, line of sight flying only, 400' vertical limit and respecting no-fly zones and to inform airports within 5 miles that you'll be flying your drone within the mentioned limits. The control you have with this drone is incredible but remember to make sure you have GPS signal, otherwise you're flying at your own risk. There's a beginner mode that reduces your speed and range and unless you've flown before use it for the first few flights, after that, don't be afraid to leave beginner mode! My wife enjoys it too! The only thing I might have done differently is to have bought the Mavic Pro which given the fact it comes with a DJI remote and can fly faster and has more than twice the battery life of my Spark. I want to say that I'm not disappointed, just offering advice is all. Watch the YouTube videos, consider the "Flymore" package version of the Spark or the Mavic Pro but if you want fun, good pictures and video and enhanced flight modes, you can't do better than the Spark.

Great photo drone for the price

After 6 months of flying, I can definitively say that I LOVE this drone! Great resolution on the camera. Great value for the price. Intuitive to fly. Great for capturing farm photos through the seasons. Flew it on a 4 degree Fahrenheit day with no issues, also flew it in a light snowfall over my property with no issues (although you probably aren’t supposed to do that)! Issues I have had: At first, it would not sync with the controller and the DJI app. After trying over and over for a few hours, it finally synced. Very frustrating. I just wanted to fly the darned thing! Sometimes there is a lag on the video, which is unfortunate. One time, the drone controls stopped working all of the sudden and the drone just started going off on its own random direction, without me even touching the controls. After a couple of minutes, the controls mysteriously started working again. The DJI app would not work with an old Samsung smartphone- the screen kept freezing, but works well with a newer iPad. Over time, the battery life/ flight time seems to slowly decrease. The return-home feature works great UNLESS you are flying below trees in the woods, and the auto-return-home feature kicks on, and your drone flies upwards so quickly before you can hit ‘cancel return home’, and your drone flies itself into a tree (this happened once, not too high off the ground, so nothing broke). This happened because the distance sensors that tell the drone it is too close to an object turn off automatically when the drone is in ‘return home’ mode. Also, they say you can launch it from your hand and have it land in your hand, but I’d be seriously afraid of losing a finger! Those rotors are powerful! Overall, this is a great drone for the money! Buy it, already!

I never thought when I was a kid I would have my own remote control UFO. This thing is so cool and easy to use. I had never bought a drone because I was afraid to lose my investment in the trees somewhere but the spark has so many auto features it is really easy to get it home everytime. You have to get the DJI remote to open the true potential but the spark by itself allows you to spend a small amount to realize how much you enjoy flying the dronebefore spending more on accesories. The small size of the spark really makes flying anywhere easy even in pretty high wind I am amazed at how it will juat stay still if you are not giving it any input. The video features are awesome as well, follow, auto spiral pan, various pan shots all at a push of a button. Love this thing.

DJI has put together in the Spark a top quality drone packed with features unseen in similar or even bigger drones. The Spark can be setup quite quickly but I would absolutely recommend thoroughly reading the manual and watching instructional videos on DJI's website and YouTube. Eventhough it is not as complex as a Phantom it has lots of potential gotchas that will bite you if you don't know how to set it up right. However once setup and familiar with the app this drone is fantastic! It's easy to fly and for the most part won't let you crash it. Video and photo quality is impressive. Colours are vivid. A controller and spare batteries are a must. Favorite mode is the gesture mode with active tracking : it's wild. Safe flying.

Being a Phantom owner for a few years I enjoy taking that out for flights and got used to it. Only problem is it's too big, too much stuff to take and didn't want to take an additional backpack with me every time I went somewhere or travelled. I looked into the Spark, looked at tons of youtube videos. I will say this, you won't be disappointed if you are looking for something smaller, easier to travel with, faster to launch in the air and gets great pics and video. Not to mention the other options you can do with pictures like sphere mode. Great for social media/youtube videos and can def make it cinematic with the right editing software. Remember it's all about the editing software to make you're videos cinematic! I'm glad I picked this little guy up, keep it in my car all the time.

After buying about seven cheap drones and then crashing or losing all of them I figured I should buy a gps drone. I thought about going all in on a mavic pro or phantom but besides being able to fly farther away I think I made the right choice. I’ve flown a half mile away with my spark. I plan on buying signal boosters for an extra six bucks and I should be able to fly one mile away. Perfect drone even for kids. This drone practically flies itself... you take your thumbs off the control sticks and just holds its position and waits for the next command.

The spark is by far the best drone for the money. I’ve flown in high wind and it still was stable enough to capture smooth video. The quality of the photos and videos are great. The app for iPhone and android makes flying and recording a breeze. Paired with the DJI remote, you can create some stunning photos, and cinematic videos with this little drone. Great for a novice, a first drone for someone wanting to start filming from the sky, or even just to use as a back up for your mavic or phantom pros. I highly recommend the remote, extra battery and ND filters.

I've had several other drones, but this is my first DJI drone and I have to say i'm impressed. The capabilities of this little drone are amazing. You can fly it without any sort of remote using gesture control, you can use your cell phone to fly it, or if you really want to unlock its potential get the joystick controller. The built-in safety features are incredible. I was foolishly flying it within 50' of an electrical distribution plant and I lost control of the drone. It went into fail safe mode, avoided several obstacles and landed safely on its own. The phone app told me I needed to calibrate the compass and once the calibration was complete it told me that I was too close to an electromagnetic field. My confidence in the product grows every time I fly the little bugger. Love it!

Having owned a DJI Phantom for many years, I was intrigued to see such a powerful unit in such a small package. The Spark is quite easy to use even for a beginner. Using the DJI app it allows you to totally control the spark although I would highly recommend getting the fly more package with the extra battery and remote control. It even allows limited control via hand gestures. The camera takes very good HD video (no 4k). Using the remote it really opens this little drone up. I have flown it way out of visual range and still maintained complete control. If you are looking for an easy to use portable drone I highly recommend this one. Do note that flight time is about 12 to 14 mins per charge, so I recommend getting a few batteries.

Purchased this as part of an entry level aerial photography startup initiative. It's exceptionally small size provides for some serious ease of use when transporting it from site to site. The average battery life seems to run about 12-14 minutes, depending on conditions and how hard it's being flow. Due to its smaller size, and lower top speed, it does not do well in high wind conditions. A recent trip to an oceanfront area with high winds made this drone almost unusable. Effective range was limited to just a couple hundred meters, otherwise the battery would have died before successfully returning home.

This little drone has more features than I expected. The picture quality is really good and the built in safety features make it a breeze to fly. Its small size seems to make it less threatening to other people who find drones a menace to their privacy. Nevermind the fact that everyone has a camera on their phone. Anyway, in my view, this drones only real competition is its older brother, the Mavic, which is more expensive and larger, making it more of a target for haters. I highly recommend the fly more pack as it includes the controller and extra batteries. You'll want those to get the most out of your flying. This is a safe to fly drone that has the features you wont outgrow. Its a keeper.

I purchased the Spark due to the small size. its my first drone and have found it very easy to fly. it is very stable and predictable during flight. I would recommend the Spark Combo pack that comes with a controller. i have flown using a phone as a controller and it works but not as positive as the controller. The controller also allows Sport mode that takes the flying to a whole new level of fun. This thing is addicting! I would recommend the DJI Care refresh from DJI. you can order it within 48 hours of activating your drone without any hassles. after that its a hassle of suplying a video of proof of operation.

This is a great drone for a beginner because it's very easy to fly and very sturdy. The video is 1080p, and it's amazing. I have a drone with a 4k camara and I never shoot in 4k. The video quality is beautiful and the file sizes are much smaller than 4k. The size is the best thing about it but it also is a bit of a drawback when it comes to battery life. They state 16 min flight time but it's really more like 10min. You will need more batteries. I have 5 and wish i had a couple more. This is not a phantom or mavic so it's not fair to compare to those, but for what it is, its amazing.

I was skeptical about this bottom of the barrel drone provided by DJI but wow I have been amazed at all the technology packed into this thing! The gesture mode is cool and it tracks you and follows you. Highly recommend buying the remote because your range is extended 10x! Ive flown this thing 1200ft in the air and it takes great panoramic sphere images. It only takes 1080p video which is great for hobby use I just wish it would do it at 60hz for smoother video. But I have been blown away by this little guy. Highly recommend.

This is my first pricey gadget that I had to fly on air ever. I bought this to use for covering videos during vacations.wished I bought it with the controlller. Even without the controller this little thing gets the job done. May not have a 3 axis gimbal and 4K but it still a great little drone. The flight time isn’t the best but 10 to 13 minutes of flight time is more than enough for me. Plus video captures on this thing is so smooth and clear. Looking forward to take great cinematic aerial videos Got this during the sale so I save a 100 off Thanks Best Buy and DJi

Had a very cheap off-brand drone before this; also a DJI Phantom which I ended up crashing in an ill-advised flight near high rises at the beach... The Spark is very easy to use and loads of fun to fly. I am amazed at the precise control the Spark allows and how FAST it is when in sport mode. Would HIGHLY recommend this to users of many ages - main advice would be to start slowly, keep on training mode for a while and maybe have a friend show you some tips if possible. Would buy this again for sure!

My employer just gifted me with this drone... absolutely the queen of mini drones. Flies great. Super stills and videos. Image stabilization is very good… even in quite a strong wind, the videos are stable. With GPS, ground and collision detection, as well as multiple flight modes, there is a bit of a learning curve to use this beast. On the other hand, you can use this machine to make professional quality videos and stills. I probably would not have bought one of these "just for fun" because of the cost, but I am very happy to be gifted with it.

This little drone is amazing. The image quality, the autonomous functions, and everything works as I expected it. I highly recommend getting the remote control for it, or purchasing the bundle right off the bat. The battery life is short, but enough time for fun, and amazing for how well this thing flies. With the controller you can put it in to SPORT mode and the thing zips...that's the only time I almost crashed it, because I was flying a little too close to some trees and couldn't stop fast enough. You will no be disappointed with this purchase.

For a $350 drone, you can't really beat the functionality and the price. This little drone has many of the same features as more expensive drones, and the camera footage is exceptional as well. Being able to fly with gestures, your phone or the separate remote controller is a nice option. I would recommend getting additional batteries though, as you'll want to keep flying after the first one runs out. The Fly More combo might be the better buy, but the Spark alone is still a great aircraft.
