Customers are saying

Customers are impressed with the fun gameplay, engaging story, and portability of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, particularly praising the enhanced content and voice acting in this version. While some players missed the original orchestrated music from previous releases, many appreciated the removal of random encounters. The 3DS port is considered a success by many players.

    A DQ Classic!

The long-running Dragon Quest Japanese Role Playing Game series has rarely disappointed. From the original NES Dragon Quest to Dragon Quest 6 on the Super Famicom , the series saw enough tweaks to storytelling, gameplay and mechanics to keep it fun and interesting while still retaining a cohesive feel and vision. With Dragon Quest 7 however, the series started to feel a bit stale. Released on the Playstation several years after the visually stunning and cutting edge (at the time) Final Fantasy VII (and a year after Final Fantasy IX which pushed the system to its limits), DQ 7, while in 3D, still resembled the older games with low-res short, blocky character art and pixelated towns and overworld., while the gameplay was pretty much the same as it ever was with little to make it stand out. In addition, the game was a slow-burner, taking quite a long time with introductory scenes before the game truly began, which did not help considering the overwhelming length of the game to begin with. Dragon Quest VIII on the other hand, exceeded expectations with a game that was visually impressive, with cel-shaded characters and a vibrant, colorful full 3D world with gorgeous vistas. The game still graced us with the classic Dragon Quest gameplay, but battles moved at a fast pace and the newly added voice acting (a first for the series), along with myriad books to be found (which contain the usual DQ humor in the form of very short stories, anecdotes and recipes for crafting) added to the immersion and enjoyment. This 3DS port is excellent, and aside from the cel-shaded character outlines being gone, it is close to the original Playstation 2 release. The loss of the cel-shading makes the game seem a little less vibrant, but it is still quite a feat that they were able to port this over to the 3DS. Navigation of menus is quick and smooth and there is no slowdown while moving your party around. *Note: some of the issues with Dragon Quest 7 were improved in the 3DS port which includes updated artwork in line with the remakes of DQ 4, 5, and 6 for the DS, and a streamlined intro which helps get you into the action sooner. I haven't finished it but it is an excellent remake and I recommend it.

The Dragon Quest games have always played second fiddle to Final Fantasy here in the states, but in Japan, the DQ games are a bona fide phenom. People line up for release day like it were a new console. This game is fun and the art style cannot be beat. It is never too late to dive in to the DQ universe.

Dragon Quest 8? Isn't that the game I played years ago on PS2? Yup it is! While its a rehash of the old game many have played, there are quite a few changes/additions to liven up this game. Biggest change you'll notice right away is the change in monster fights. No longer do they randomly pop up as you're walking, but they spawn on the world map in front of you. When you're on a roll traveling from point A to B, you no longer have to be troubled by random slimes which is amazing. I'm not too far right now cause I've been busy with other games/work, but I'm loving this nostalgia trip when i do pick it up.

I loved the PS2 version but this is by far the best version. Also having it on the go lends this game greatly. Nothing beats playing and grinding for awhile and being able to just close the 3DS to get back to it later. A must have for any 3DS game collection.

The original PS2 game was so friggin good but dare I say it, this remake manages to surpass it in so many ways. The graphics are awesome, the music is awesome (orchestra be damned, big deal!), the characters are engaging and the story is told in some very entertaining cutscenes. And it's just flat out funny sometimes. The guy who voices Yangus needs an Oscar or the video game equivilent of one. Let's get down to the nitty gritty on what's new to this remake for fans of the original game!

One of the best Dragon Quest games finally comes to a portable! Even if you have played the original, there is new content added that makes it very worthwhile to play again. New characters are playable and thanks to being able to see encounters on the main screen, you will be able to finish the game in no time. If you haven't yet played this, be prepared for a meaty story and very enjoyable gameplay. A solid entry for those who haven't yet tried the Dragon Quest series.

This is the old school turn based jrpg. It is a traditional game with huge fan base. On some level, this beat the Ps4 DQ11. It has voice acting and it’s 3D in some parts.

This is one of the greats. While all JRPG fans will (or already have) devour this game it has enough of everything else to keep any casual gamer happy. Compared to cell phone versions this is by far the best way to play this game on the go. It has the high production values of any AAA game with top music, voice work, gameplay and graphics without the oddities of many JRPGs that make some hard to get into.

I loved this game on PS2, played through it a few times. I couldn't wait to play it again on 3ds. There are a few differences but nothing that will affect how fun this game is (maybe the change in Jessica's voice but that's nitpicking). If you like RPGs, you'll like this game. Just be warned it's not a short game, be prepared to sink a lot of hours into it especially if you like to do sidequests.

For a PS2 game, there were things that had to be compromised like graphics and music, but the 3DS version tried to make up for it by bringing along various other additions. More characters, visible encounters, and many mechanical tweaks. Definitely one to check out, even if you've played the original.

All of the these DW/DQ games remade for the Nintendo handhelds are actually very good counterparts with their original PS1/PS2 titles. The 3DS do have some JRPGs but the DQ series is near the top in terms of engrossing story and just being a very long game (worth the value you paid for).

This game is an excellent jrpg. The ability to swap out my weapons and fighting style keeps battles fresh. The open world exploration and option to avoid enemy encounters is great. Fabulous voice acting, a fun story, compelling motivations, just a fantastic experience all around.
