    Duke is Back!!

    Posted .

First off, this IS NOT Halo, Call of Duty, Battlefield:BC2 or any other of those types of games. Anyone expecting that should go buy something else and not whine about it (you've been warned). DO NOT buy this game for little junior! The 17+ Mature rating is there for a real reason (again, you've been warned). What this is, is Duke Nukem Forever and it's classic Duke. The graphics are better than previous versions but they are not super high end. Let's face it, Duke is an cheesy, egotistical, chauvinistic, beer swilling, steroid popping, larger than life CARTOON CHARACTOR fighting alien pigs and creatures from space. He can be rude and at times, pretty vulger and doesn't respect women except when it suits him. Deal with it because that's how Duke is now and always has been. He's not politically correct in any sense so if you're a poltically correct type person, please go buy another game or at the very least, don't come back here and whine about it. For those of us that grew up playing games like the original Duke Nukem or Castle Wolfenstein, this is a truly fun game to play especially after waiting 12 years. Even my 17 year old son likes it and while he likes Halo, COD and B:BC2, he appriciates Duke Nukem for it is and doesn't whine about what it isn't. The levels are pretty fun (the model car is pretty cool) and of course you get to blow stuff up, kill alien pigs and do all the things Duke has done before and you get to do it Duke style. One more time..this is not Halo, Call of Duty, Battlefield:BC2 and do not buy it if you are easily offended, very poltically correct or for junior. Take the Mature 17+ rating seriously. Otherwise, if you've played Duke before or you want a change of pace from the more realistic games..."It's time to kick a** and chew gum and I'm all out of gum".

Multiplayer with friends is fun, but overall this seems like an unfinished title. Probably best just playing with friends if you really like duke nukem games.

Better than you're led to believe

Graphics: the best? No, but still pretty good. Controls: the best? No, but still pretty good. Story: pretty bad. But it's a Duke game, and it is exactly what it should be, in all it's crass, rude, vulgar, and slightly perverted goodness. I feel this game is being unfairly slammed because its being judged by gamers unfamiliar with what Duke games are all about. Since it doesn't live up to the gameplay or control standards of the latest iteration in the Call of Duty franchise, it is being deemed as a toilet humor game with no good qualities. First off, this game is strictly FAN SERVICE! If you didn't enjoy or experience Duke Nukem before, there's nothing here for you. Second, the controls, graphics, gameplay are not too bad. I don't know why people think these aspects of the game are so terrible. Yes, it would be a painfully generic romp through familiar levels without Duke and his trademark humor, but that's pretty much the whole reason this game is fun. I've been playing the game for two days, and have been enjoying it very much. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Duke 3D.

    Not bad

Poor old Duke has gotten beat up in the gaming press over this installment and I have to admit some of it is deserved. The game's shooting mechanic just doesn't feel right and the tone is pretty uneven. That said, I still enjoyed this game quite a lot. There were some moments of brilliance and things that made me laugh out loud. This game has a lot of potential but it doesn't quite deliver.

    Classic Duke!

Duke Nukem Forever has been getting terrible reviews and they are not doing this game any justice. Personally I love Duke Nukem 3D and have been waiting a long time for this sequel. If you've given this game a bad review and its not because you're not a fan of shooters than you are wrong. Whether you want to admit it or not, Duke nukem defined a generation of gaming and many shooters today owe it to Duke. yeah, the new game isn't remotley close to new games like Call of Duty, but thats because it is keeping it old school. Games today are trying to be so realistic, I almost think they are not fun. Duke Nukem says screw modern shooter fundamentals and runs and guns his way through hordes of aliens to make an action packed game. In a world of Call of Duty, the few classic styled games like Duke Nukem and even Halo deserve their own leauge of gaming.

    Don't Hate, Appreciate

To those of you considering purchasing this game: if you played the old Duke, this is a must have. If you haven't played the old Duke and are looking for something like Call of Duty, don't waste your time. This game has been slammed simply because people rating the game never played Duke 3D. It's meant to be cheesy. It's meant to have a terrible plot. Like I stated previously, don't waste your time or money if you didn't play Duke 3D when that was the FPS to play! You just simply won't understand. If you did play the old Duke, you're in for a treat!

Good game from 10 years ago

    Posted .

You must be in the correct mindset to play this game. If you think it's going to be a modern first person shooter, you are way off-base. This game is a sequel to a game from 12 years ago that should have come out 10 years ago. Due to numerous setbacks, the game was delayed and just recently released. Items to consider: The game isn't on rails, but it's close. You move down a series of corridors to get to a room, do something in that room, and then go down a series of corridors to the next room. There is a couple of times you have to go get an item and put it on something to make that thing work in order to advance (they make a joke that Duke doesn't need a key to open a door, but in reality he needs three battery packs to operate a cannon (same concept)). The jokes are vulgar which is applicable to this series. The storyline is almost non-existent. Aliens are back, the 'President' tells Duke not to do anything while the General tells Duke to go kill the aliens. The story jumps around, Duke is playing a video game of himself, Duke is unconscious and dreaming of a strip club; there is very little continuity. The intro animation to the game is long but average. The loading times between levels are exceedingly long and plays the same monotonous music. If the game would have incorporated even half of the energy or music they put into their game trailer, it might make the game more fun to play. I do like to play through games and get achievements and normally I'll replay a game to get missed achievements, but this game will suck all desire to play it even after a few levels. I was lucky and got this game on sale for $5, I can justify it at that price. Anything more and you will not get your monies worth. If you want to play a FPS from the mid 90s with more current graphics, this is what you are looking for. If you want free flowing combat and the ability to run all over the place and make your own decisions, this game is NOT for you.

    Amazing Game!

    Posted .

What a great game! I almost miss this masterpiece because of all the bad reviews, once again is unbelievable how the press can trash an awesome game like this, the only thing bad about this game is the loading, every time you died you got a loading screen, that’s it, in exchange you get a great shooting action game with: shooting, driving, plat forming, solving puzzles, interaction, humor, the gameplay is all about this game, the graphics are not that bad and the sound is really good and very funny plenty of jokes and references of other games, if you are on the fence because of the bad reviews, forget about it, run and get this game, you won’t regret.

    Classic Duke, but overhyped

    Posted .

For starters I'm not sure about the other reviewers, but I actually played the original Duke Nukem 3D (On PC in all its vulgar glory). So when people are complaining about the cliche one liners, I don't think they really understand where the humor is coming from. Are they on the ROFL worthy? Definitely not, but they more of a nod to the original then anything. But anyways.... Controls: Feel a little slugish and hard to fine tune. This becomes especially harmful since enemies can be just about anywhere and move quickly. In addition, there are several points which require precision jumping which coupled with lack of responsive controls add up to an hour a frustration stuck in the story. Difficulty: Even on the easiest settings the enemies come in fast, dealing lots of damage. This would be great if the problems with the controls were non-existant. This biggest complaint is when you die, you have to sit for 30 seconds to minute at a loading screen. I easily have a ratio of 1:4 of playing vs waiting time because of this. Graphics: I'm not sure what the other reviews have against the graphics. I can say at the worst they aren't the absolute, precision cutting edge available, but are still pretty good. Multiplayer: Only played a couple of deathmatch and king of the hill type games and wasn't to impressed. Either spawn camping or to small of maps cause for a very underwhelming experience. Many times whoever has the bigger gun wins no matter the skill involved. Single Player/Story/Humor: Probably the main reason I bought the game. Are the one liners and dialog cliche and chauvinistic? Absolutely. Funny? Sometimes? Worth a better review? Probably not. The game does have all the usual interations with the enviroment (Vending machines, urinals, pinball machines). What was cutting edge back in '96 has now just become a moot point to have low brow humor (good or bad is up to you). The biggest drawback is the lack of direction in game as what to do next. It took me a while to catch on to the fact that whatever I had to accomplish next would glow gold. This becomes troublesome as many times the object (door, button, switch) is either nowhere to be seen or so small and the object doesn't really stand out as something you need to interact with. Some type of HUD or navigation arrow is greatly needed. Finally the problem solving puzzles that you must accomplish to progress. Once again, there is a lack of direction as to what exactly you are trying to accomplish. Many of these puzzles involve the precision jumping I mentioned earlier. Combine the fact you don't know what you're supposed to be doing, have poor control over what your trying to do, and the fact you have to wait 60 seconds if you die (which you will) and you end up with a lot of frustration.

    Very Dissapointing

Well a 12 year wait and frankly a disappointment. Boss battles in today's FPS's are a waste. They are frustrating, repetitive and they take away from the overall game play experience. This game has some funny moments and the humor is spot on (for adults) but the game play is weak, uninspired and repetitive. The boss fights are just an exercise in frustration. With so many excellent shooters on the market I'm amazed that with 12 years to develop this one, this is the best they could come up with.

    This game is delightful

I will admit the game play is odd and the graphics arent so great, but there is finally a game out there that isnt about running around camping corners and ticking other people off. The jokes in the game are funny. This game is doing exactly what its trying to do. The game may not be straight forward but heck who wants a game to be to easy that you only play it for 2 hours then never play it again.

    3 words: Worst. Game. Ever.

I have played many a bad game in my day, but Duke Nukem Forever offers absolutely nothing of redeemable quality. The story is non-existant, the gameplay needs refined, you can only carry 2 weapons, the shooting is unsatisfying, and the load times are horrendous (45sec-1min load times every few minutes, and everytime you die, which will be every few minutes, you get to sit through a 45 second load). Avoid this game at all costs.
