I was actually amazed how good a store brand was.

We are redoing our living room and finally got rid of our old 27" CRT and upgraded to this behemoth. I wasn't expecting to buy a Dynex but the price at the time was too good to turn down. I expected only decent picture quality, but it was stunningly better than expected. Sound set to 20 fills the room (its a very large rectangular room too). I do most of my shopping online, as I hate store shopping, I didn't even go in to compare the picture quality to the supposedly better top tier brands. Many people might say that is a dumb idea to buy a TV sight unseen, but here's the thing. The display models are all set up to show off their best qualities. At home viewing the lighting is going to be different and so is the video feed. I buy on features, and this TV is pretty loaded with the things I wanted, and lacks the things I see no point in, like 3D and built in apps. I don't need a smart TV when I have a Roku, PS3 and a Logitech revue. I don't need 3D effects. I watch movies for their entertainment value, not the picture quality. Yes the HD is amazing, the picture is better than the 5 year old LCD I have in my bedroom. Be fair and actually consider this brand. Why spend another 500-1000 for the same size TV.
I've been looking at TVs for a while and I'll be perfectly honest I'm no perfectionist. I just look for the best deals, but I do try to stay away from unknown and house brands. I saw this TV online and thought for the price it has to have issues. I read the reviews and most people here loved it. The few bad ones seem to be from people too stuck up or brand loyal. I was really looking for something in the ~40" range but when this TV was priced lower than most of the smaller sized competition I sprung and I'm glad I did. I'm not looking for bragging rights or the newest features, just a good priced TV.

HD is only good with BlueRay anyway...

OK, most people don't know it, but 1080P is not standard on ANY cable company unless you are talking about Pay per View. So we are all watching SD most of the time anyway.
This TV handles 720p PERFECTLY and 1080i as expected, with some motion blur. The way to use this TV and take advantage of the LARGE picture (because that's all we want really anyway), is to keep 1080i turned off in your cable box preferences so that it defaults to 720p (when using the "native" setting).
No HD TV 55 inches or larger that I have seen so far will stand up to SD in picture sharpness, clarity, and color. Snobs that spent $900.00 to $1500.00 for their 55 inch TV will tell you different, but they are just trying to justifying their overpriced purchase. They will also try to tell you that you need a $50.00 HDMI triple shielded, fuel injected, SUPER SPECIAL HDMI cable, but that is just more misinformation. A 24 karat gold plated High Speed HDMI cable will support more then 4 times the capability of your HD TV for around 4 to 8 bucks on the internet.
BlueRay is another story, it looks great at 1080p on the Dynex and that's what counts, watch everything else at 720p (most will be 480 anyway), use the Dynex native setting with 1080i UNCHECKED in the setup of your cable box and the theater profile on the TV and you will be happy and save some big bucks.

Great TV for a great price. I bought this TV to replace my old 1994 tube TV. What a difference! It has a really nice picture, and took me less than 30 minutes to setup. I had been hesitant to replace the old TV because it still worked and I was worried about the price of the new ones. This one is definitely price friendly and the product is really good.

I was looking for the biggest tv for the best price. Saw this beast on sale for $650 at my local BB store and couldn't pass it up. Got it home, mounted it on my wall above the fireplace, and wow what a picture on this tv! U can pay more for the name brands but after seeing the picture on this tv i'm sure glad I didn't spend more for a name brand. I have this connected to Dish Networks Hopper and Joey whole home dvr system via HDMI cables and the picture is every bit as good as any tv I've seen. And I've owned many of the name brand tv's previously. The setup out of the box is not very good but with a bit of tweaking it is perfect. I really don't know what the tru motion feature is for because the picture looks like everything was filmed with a camcorder so I basically turned off all the features and started from scratch and the the picture on the tv couldn't be better. Just tweak it until u get it exactly the way u prefer. I would have rated it 5 stars if not for having to adjust the settings. A 55" beast of a tv for $650 and an HD picture that is good as any tv that cost $200-$300 more, u can't go wrong with this tv.

$850 is not a ton of money for a 55" LCD. It looks good, and after adjusting the color saturation it has been very nice picture quality and color definition. The Avatar Blu Ray looked amazing on this set.
I have watched Blu Rays, Streamed and PPVed action movies, played PS3 games (Including GT5) and saw none of the bleeding or blurring some people have complained about. I don't know if this is a monday/friday rule thing but my set has been perfect in that regard. I was actively looking for any signs of it and nada. I am a PC gamer and having had to replace monitors because of this problem, I am experienced in finding it, and annoyed by it when I see it. It was my biggest concern when I bought the TV.
The remote is chincy, but I have Logitech Harmonys so it hasn't affected me.

Gave this TV a shot because for the price and 55", it looked like a steal. Let me preface this by adding that I bought my parents a 46" Dynex for xmas and was very impressed with the picture for the cheap price of $600.
So I must say the size of this tv is impressive and looks great on the heavy duty swivel stand provided. Plenty of inputs for me. I hook up 2 game systems, surround sound receiver, cable and dvd player to this. Turned it on and was amazed by the brightness and clarity of this picture. Then I put on a basketball game and then I had problems with "ghosting", so I tried about 100 different settings and nothing worked. Then I tried playing Fifa on PS3, but still a lot of "ghosting" and motion blur issues. As for hd movies, it gave a weird feel when the camera panned and because I only used the tv for a day, I couldnt decide if i liked the effect or not. However, I watch a lot of sports and play a lot of video games, so I had to return the tv because it was not acceptable.
When I brought it back and told one of the workers in the tv department that I jut returned the Dynex 55", he said that ghosting has been an issue with the tv for a lot of customers, he then kindly pointed me in the direction of tv's priced 2x as much, haha. Anyway, BB had great customer service and no issue with returning it for a full refund. I am now in the process of looking at more expensive tv's so that this doesnt happen again.

An awesome t.v. for the price. Had the t.v. for over a month, and couldn't be happier! After reading the other reviews, I felt for the price, I would give it a shot. Yes, there may be a little "ghosting" (motion blur), but not too noticable. With the 120Hz on, it made the picture a little more crisp, but looked as if it was filmed with a handy cam. The picture panned a little weird for me, so I leave the 120Hz turned off. Just my personal preference. Speakers aren't too bad. Has an option to have a "surround sound" feel. That works out well! All in all, an awesome t.v.!!! Don't expect quality from a $5,000 t.v..... Seems some of the people on here that gave neg. reviews, had that expectation in mind. If you want quality from a $5,000 t.v., go buy a $5,000 t.v. For it being a 55", LCD 1080p for under a $1,000.... You can't go wrong!

I wanted to wait a while before reviewing this TV so I can give a more detailed review of it. I've had this TV for almost two months now, and overall, I am more than pleased with my purchase. I'm not gonna get into what features this TV has as far as HDMI connects etc. You can read the specs above. The look of this TV is really sleek...nice black, shiny border along with a super sturdy base. The base is heavy weighted which is great for the support of this beast. The picture is off the charts for the bargain price. Nice, beautiful colors as if you're watching a blue ray disk on the HD channels. I had a 53" CRT Panasonic before this purchase and this TV has much better colors and contrast. I was very surprised with how the HD channels look!! Amazing!! The best this TV performs is with movies. I have a Samsung Blu-Ray player and this TV is simply amazing. It actually looks 3D. Very, very impressed. The only minor issues I've noticed so far, is with Standard Def channels and tickers and banners along the bottom as you see with channels such as ESPN and your national news channels. The banners get a little shaky, but it only happens during a commercial and not very noticeable. Hopefully, the callebration will fix these issues. Also, the picture on SD channels doesn't really look very good with the colors and a little ghosting, but I only watch HD, so it doesn't bother me. As far as the sound, it's fairly good. I have a home theatre system, so I don't use the sound from the TV itself. So, for the price, you can't go wrong. Hope this helps!!

I bought the television last week and can honestly say this set is not bad at all for the money. Supposedly LG makes many of the components for this set. The picture is great but I must say the speakers seem a little under powered. You are certainly getting more for money considering this set is going for $750. Although I do recommend turning off the Dynex Motion Feature.
I bought a 32in Dynex for Christmas of 2010 and we have not had one single problem with it. Dynex is a solid alternative to more pricier TV's if you are on a tight budget.
Setting up the 55in was easy and quick, just put it on the stand and tighten six screws.

I previously owned a 32" Dynex LCD TV and upgraded that TV to this one. The previous 32" Dynex was a great TV and hence the reason I again went with Dynex.
I went in to a store to buy a 47" non-internet TV. I saw this one on display and was priced at $590 #cheaper than the 47" I was looking at#. The store I went to didn't have hardly any large TVs in stock and gave me the address of one of the stores that did have this one about 30 miles away. They had it put on hold for me till I got there.
Unfortunately, this 2nd Best Buy store decided the correct price was $750! I learned of this after they brought it up to the counter and wanted to put an over $800 charge on my card! I told them about the price tag at the other store and they wouldn't even check with that store. Their computers said $750 was correct and wouldn't budge. It still looked like a good deal and I was not wanting to start the process to hunt down a unit they had in stock all over again. So I reluctantly paid the higher price. I got home, looked it up on the online site and it said $589.99. I was going to complain to the store today but now I notice that today the online store shows it at $750 again. So strike one for Best Buy's changing the price up/down.
This is a TV with some serious flaws that can be mostly minimized by choosing the settings carefully. Even with the optimum sttings some of the problems still occassionally show up.
1st: With its default settings, this 55" TV has the same 1080p resolution and pixels as a smaller one. This means you have to set farther away from it to not see artifacts like ghost trails and noise patterns. If you watch a lot of 480i sources you will hate this TV as it looks absolutely awful in anything less than 720p modes. I expected some of this as all larger TVs show faults in the original programming more prevalently than smaller ones. However, if you leave this unit as set by default, it really looks bad. It took a full day of tweaking the setup options to get a better picture. Frankly, I had to shut off the features said to fix noise and such as well as tweak sharpness/color/tint. Turning on the 120Hz modes or noise reduction modes or auto contrast #on by default# actually makes the picture quality far worse. After starting from an "all features off" mentality, I was then able to get a stable picture. Occassionally, there are still issues with fast moving images blurring or leaving ghosts for a few milliseconds.
There is another issue with a few cable channels only. On these specific channels, audio will lead the video quite noticeably by a second or two. I would blame this on Cox except that the older 31" Dynex TV tuned to these channels does not show this problem. So I know it's happening within the processing in this TV. It doesn't happen that often but when it does, it's noticably annoying. I don't think any of the available settings will fix this occassional issue.
Several people on this forum have complained of poor volume. As it comes out of the box, it would seem to have very little volume even at the highest #100# setting. The key to fix this is simple. Go into the audio settings and you will see the default settings of all the volume sliders are at 0 out of 10. Slide them up to 5 or so and you'll have plenty of volume. Also enabling Surround sound and tweaking that equalizer to your own sound preference will help a lot. I actually found the 10 watt per channel output was quite good after the settings were tweaked. Again not sure why this wasn't set by default to be higher. Seems Dynex could have prevented some dissatisfaction early on by choosing their inital settings better.
The remote doesn't have great range #<20 feet# and so I advise to use a learning universal remote. The Dynex doen't have default codes for many universals but the ones that can learn from the TV remote should work. I have Tivo boxes. The remote without learning ability can't do the mute or input buttons while the one I have that can learn did all the main buttons. The TV's remote batteries included with this unit were already a little discharged when opened. So you might want to check them or replace them if you have poor remote control functionality. The remote demands you point it toward the left of the TV. It doesn't seem to have great range and isn't very good at extreme direction angles.
On the positive side, this unit has lots of input choices and it's pretty easy to select them through any of several methods. Of course it would be better if you can use the HDMI jacks as the quality of the signal will be better. A second choice would be to use the 5 cable component cable. The last choices should be the PC VGA or composite jacks. You can also access the whole setup via the MENU button as well as all the input choices via the INPUT button. Or use the PICTURE or AUDIO or 5 button picture type buttons to more quickly get to what you want to change. There are also 4 programmable buttons on the remote for channel banks.
There are two guides included with this unit. There is no user guide included. The guides included are just info on your warranty and how to clean the unit or install the base. You will have to download the User Guide from the Dynex site. That one isn'r great either and has limited information. It assumes you already know why you would turn on or off a feature without describing it much. I'd still advise you print it as it's a pain to have to go to the net everytime you have a feature question.
This unit is heavy. Over 100 pounds.
The unit with the stand is 52"W X 35"T X 4"D
The 55" diagnal measurement means you get a 47.5"W X 26.75" screen size. I was able to view the screen from either side pretty well. I notice if you leave the settings in the Power Saving Picture Mode, the colors will appear to wash out at very extreme angles. So have your settings set to standard or vivid type of settings if you are going to view at extreme angles. You need to be setting at least 15 feet away from any 55" TV and at that distance you will see a good picture. The biggest mistake people make is that they think a larger TV should look better than a smaller one. That's almost never true. In two TVs with equal resolutions #let's say 1080p# you will have to set farther away from the larger screen. Basically, because the same number of pixels are spread out farther on a larger set, you will be more likely to notice artifacts or noise. Setting farter back from a larger TV is necessary to avoid this. As I said before, you will definately want to tweak the settings immediately to make the display good for you. If you are a person who wants really great video quality from a 55" TV, you need to look at the $1200 sets and above. This unit is moderate quality only. When purchasing a TV don't get one too big for your area or distance you intend to set from it or you will be sorely disappointed. At close distances smaller screens tend to look better at equal resolutions. A TV of this size will not show 480i programs off well. If you are doing a lot of analog or SD programming sources, you won't like this TV. You will need to run HD #720p or better# videos and use HDMI cables to enjoy this large TV.
In summation: If you can get it at $590 it might be worth it to you. If you have to pay more than $650 dollars for this, I would suggest you choose another model with a smaller/better picture quality and less setup tweaking required. If you don't mind taking the time and effort to tweak the settings and will sit at least 15 feet from it I think you will be happy with it. I gave this item a 3 rating because it required more setup than some would want to bother with, But since the product can at times be bought very cheaply it is a great value at under $600. I would recommend this unit for a cost-conscious buyer who doesn't mind some tweaking.

We bought the 55" Dynex this past weekend and love it. For the price of $799 you really can't lose!
We do not have cable and to watch tv we hook our laptop up for streaming Netflix and Hulu. It works wonderfully and has great picture when in HD. We also setup our PS3 and played a few games and blu ray movies.. Amazing!
Of course it's not the best.. but it is worth it if you're looking to save a few bucks!
BTW, there is a "soap opera" effect when you first turn it on. (Due to the high number of frames per min) All you have to do is google it. You will be instructed to change a few settings on the TV.. Now it's perfect!

this is a really great and for the price you can't beat it. about three years ago i got a 42'' dynex for myself and when i was buying it i thought well its not a good name brand but i will give it a shot, but when i got it home and hooked up my cable, ps3, and then started to play my ps3 and watch movies/tv shows i was completely amazed by this tv. i paid 800.00 dollars for the 42'' dynex back then, so i been looking around now for a year now because i wanted to upgrade to a bigger tv set and i couldn't find nothing i liked for the price i wanted to spend. i kept saying to myself i wish dynex would make bigger tvs. so guess what i got my wish, they made a bigger tv. i got a 55'' tv and for the same price i paid for the 42'' dynex back then. so believe me you don't need a sony,lg,samsung or any other big name brand tv, unless you want to pay 1,000 dollars more for no reason. the picture is great, no motion blur, the sound is great. has all the hook ups you need. so if you want a great big tv for a great price get this tv, and by the way my 42'' dynex tv is still kicking with out ever having a problem or getting serviced, so i hope you read my review and trust me and go get the tv

Great deal for the money - on Black Friday

I got this TV Black Friday weekend for 599 plus tax. Here are the facts as I perceive them a month later:
1. I've heard a couple of places that LG makes the actual LCD panel. After viewing high quality video sources like good HD cable and BluRay, I believe it; the picture is as good as anything I've seen.
2. The video processor is horrible. SD or bad HD looks awful. Even on average quality HD signal, artifacts are prevalent and motion blur is terrible. For instance, Comcast Sports HD looks bad; RedZone looks pretty good; primetime NFL looks very good; Pixar or other animated movies look sick. Guess BB blew their budget on the panel, because the video processor has no upscaling capabilities whatsoever. The only reason I'm willing to deal with this disparity now is that HD cable signal is only going to improve, so it will resolve eventually. I don't watch SD at all, so no worries there.
3. Sound is louder than anything I'll ever need. I don't even turn on the surround sound, it's so loud. Anyone who complains about the sound level/quality must be hard of hearing.
4. It's freakin' huge!!! Don't plan on sitting within six feet of this thing; it's like front row at the movie theater.
5. Menu options are limited and/or useless (see #6).
6. The 120hz designation of this TV needs to be rescinded; it's worse handling motion rendering than my 7-year old Konka LCD. Turning on the 120 motion makes no difference at all.
7. Tons of HD connections. DVR, PC, PS3, DVD recorder, etc., and I still have connections left over...
Synopsis: for what I paid, it's a great tv if only for the size and picture. Would I pay 799 (the regular price) for it? Probably not, but there's not really much else at that size/price point. If you can get it for what I paid and you have high quality input sources, grab it.

We also own a sony bravia and the picture quality is just as good if not better. The only negative thing about this tv is the width of the tv. I hooked up the ps3 to the tv and it was great, gameplay and blu-ray. Please note if you purchase this tv drive a truck or suv.

I purchased this TV at the Best Buy Store in Summerville, SC and was amazed at the size of this unit for $799.99. After setting it up, which will require two people to do this, the TV was amazing in picture. I have HD with Dish Network and it looks amazing in 1080 and even with regular TV it's still sharp. The sound on this unit along with any other LCD, LED, or Plasma TV's are all the same. They are not built on great sound but picture, but you can go into the settings and increase the equalizer setting to max to get a good decent sound. With a size of 55", you just can't beat an offer like this and although many might look at the name Dynex as a bootleg or weak brand name, don't be fooled. Their TV's have the least amount of returns out of any TV Best Buy covers. Dynex is just like Vizio and will continue to be a TV that is great not just on picture quality, but longevity. The specs will tell you all that this TV has and if your looking for a TV with a huge size but in a great price range, then grab this one!

-I bought this TV for $599 on black Friday. So far I'm REALLY Impressed. TV quality (digital cable via component cables) is solid and the sound quality isn't nearly as bad as I expected from previous reviews. True, the sound won't make your heart skip a beat, but for normal TV watching it's just fine.
-I did notice a some "ghosting" with the 120hz setting on while watching tv. I turned the 120hz off and it went away. Watching sports looks really good!
-This TV really shines when you start watching BluRay movies in 1080p. The quality is absolutely brilliant! Colors are bright and vivid. I haven't had to adjust the settings too much.
-It's very easy to hook up a receiver through hdmi, component, or digital audio.
-The TV does weigh about 100lbs (and the box it comes in is HUGE!), so get a friend to help you lift it and be mindful of the vehicle you bring if you pick up the TV from the store.
-Last, but not least, don't hesitate...get this TV if you are looking for a solid TV BIG screen on a budget

Nearly 4 years ago I was in the market for my first HDTV. I was on a budget & I wound up at the time setteling for the Dynex DX-LCD37, 37". I waited for it to go on sale I think I paid $699. Brought it home, mounted it on the wall ran the cables in the wall & never looked back. I really liked the TV it played great I was paid quite a few compliments about it.
Fast forward tho this past Summer the 55" version of the Dynex was on sale at Best Buy for $549! I did not buy it. I read the reviews & after thinking about it I decided to buy it but the sale was over. So I promised myself I would buy it on Black Friday, which I did for $599.
Since the moment I turned it on I have been blown away. It has a really nice Picture, great colors & depth, almost 3d like. My friends & I kept saying wow over & over again. I moved my 37" DYNEX to a diffrent room & I'm not sure if the new DYNEX has spoiled me, or if I need a new cable box or diffrent type of HDMI cable but I just can't watch it anymore. I'm pretty sure it's because the picture on the 55" is so amazing that it just can't compare on the 60mhz 37" DYNEX.
I've always wanted a Samsung 60" TV. if the Sammy is a 10, than this DYNEX is a 9. So combine that for the price it's an excelent value.
there are 4 HDMI ports, loads of AV ports so you can add on everything to make your entertainment center complete.
I think the sound is fine. The unit has a built in graphic Equalizer that really brings out the sound. I would have liked to see EQ pre-sets so you can customize the sound to diffrent types of viewing events; ie.. sports, movies etc..
The Stand is MONSTEROUS! I'm using it right now until the new wall mount I order comes in.
I did have some motion blur & ghosting the first night I used the unit. I played around with the various settings & it went away. I don't know if that was what the issue or if rebooting by cable box corrected the issue. What ever it was motion blur or ghosting hasn't been a problem & I have all the high picture qulaitly features on.
Once again, for the money you aren't going to get anything better. This TV can compete with the highend Samsungs as well as similar brands, I think the DYNEX has a better picture than a Sony Aquos.
There is one thing that concerns me about this unit. The cost to operate it. It's not an energy star unit & the estimate of $45 a year to operate is based on 5 hour a day useage.
The first time I turned the TV on it was in retail mode which is the mode the stores use to display the TV's for optimum viewing & is considered full power, my lights dimed. So I have it set on house hold mode & I really don't see a diffrence between the two. I suspect this TV is going to cause a significant jump in my utlitly bill.
My only regret is that DYNEX doesn't make a bigger TV. I would buy another, although I would prefer it to be an energy star rated unit.
