After 6 months, disappointed and broke!

I was excited to purchase and install the new ecobee4 summer 2017. My HVAC system is a 2002 Ruud heat pump with the electric furnace in the basement and compressor/fan outside. After opening the package, it became clear pretty quickly that my current thermostat wiring did not match ANY of the ecobee4 installations. The original thermostat was an older Rudd (2002). I contacted ecobee customer service and to their credit, they were quick to email me numerous wiring diagrams. I chose the closest match but none were a perfect match. At this point, it was either return it or choose best fit. I chose best fit. It worked well during summer and was easy to control while at home and remotely. Now....fast forward to this winter. For whatever reason (quite possibly mine), it did not control the heat pump compressor on the outside. Instead, it fired up the emergency heating coils on my heat pump and operated solely in that mode. Unfortunately for me, it has been bitter cold the past month with an average temp of 22 degrees last month. This resulted in the emergency coils being extremely overtaxed and $1000 electric bill. Last year with the old dinosaur thermostat, same month albeit average of 32 degrees, my electric bill was $300. After hours and hours of troubleshooting, I'm stuck with my dinosaur thermostat, a $1000 electric bill and a $250 ecobee4 that I can't return since I purchased it July, 2017.

I have had this product for under 24 hours and am already going to return it. It worked perfectly fine while we were home but has since lost connection to WiFi and will not reconnect even though other devices on the same network are having no issues. The device has since disappeared from the My Home screen in the app. The main reason to invest in a smart thermostat is to be able to control them when not at home. After searching the web to see if anyone else is having similar issues it appears I am not the only one. I have also since found the Ecobee servers are consistently down or having issues. Not sure how this product received such good reviews... Returning the Ecobee4 for a Nest 3rd Generation, do not make the same mistake I did.

Do not buy this product. I normally do not write reviews, but I purchased an Ecobee directly from Ecobee and returned it for an Ecobee 4, I wanted the Alexa feature. I never opened the Ecobee 3 before returning it. I have been waiting for almost two months for a refund and now and after sitting on hold for over an hour two different times I am being told that they cannot find my return and will not be issuing a refund. So, I am out $150 because Ecobee cannot find my return? After speaking with them, they use a third party to check in all their returns, it is not done in house and there is no way to find it. Be careful with this company. I did not want to go with a Nest, but after this type of customer service I have no choice.

Buggy and Not a Good Amazon Echo

My unit was locking up and threw only way to fix it was to physically remove it from the wall. There was no way to do a hard reboot from the device. Also, the Alexa portion of the unit is VERY POORLY implemented. The mics did not pick up my voice anywhere near as good as an Echo Dot. It also does not have the feature that allows it to know if it is in earshot of another Alexa device, so when it did hear me, another one of my Alexa devices would also hear me and then both would answer. Alexa devices have the capability to know if they are near each other and only the closest one is supposed to answer. I was "upgrading from a Nest thermostat, but I really thought this Echo bee was a step back from the Nest. I returned it and went back to my old Nest.

The thermostat, although installed correctly, causes my furnace to short cycle so I have had to resort back to my old thermostat. I had no issues with the thermostat in the summer but did find I did not utilize the features as much as I thought I would. Also, having Alexa on the thermostat proved to be more of a hassle than not; seeing as how it interferred with my Amazon Echo in the living room and would also randomly performed functions when triggered by something said on the TV. Nice idea but poor execution on the part of Ecobee. Save your money get something else.

In the first place, the products installation process did not work in my case. Even after I followed every step provided in the installation guide it burnt by transformer. I had to spend more money to get the transformer fixed because the echobee4 support will not help me with that. I contacted the echobee4 support they said the wiring was fine but the echobee4 device itself was faulty and they advised me replace it. I replaced the device and did the installation process again and encounter the same problem. I will never buy this product and will not recommend to anyone.

We loved it for a day. Thought the app and Alexa feature was great. Worked well for only ONE DAY. We woke up the next morning, spoke to Alexa and she didn't even come on. Tried everything; researched all articles available on the help site. There was no help available on Ecobee site for when it doesn't even respond. It literally does nothing. So frustrating that we have to return and haven't even used it for 24 hours.

I was not able to install with my 23 year old geothermal unit? Tech support was lack luster and said the problem was not on there end... I have a “Water Furnace” brand, wish it would have worked... I have successfully installed before with a gas furnace and once with an electric heat pumps (not a novice)

My 2 year old Lenox furnace required the wiring harness to be cut and altered along with several 'jumper bars" to be permanently altered in order to make the ecobee4 Wi-Fi Thermostat functional. The risk of error was too high so I returned it to BestBuy. BestBuy accepted the return with no issue, thanks.

I have had two different air conditioned companies come out and they both said that the thermostat isn't functionally like it should. The ecobee will not turn our heat on! We have called ecobee and tried to troubleshoot multiple times and rewire but still nothing. Getting rid of ours.

    Sucks compared to Nest

Not sure why people things its better. The software, the speed, the scheduling, the fan timer.... all suck! I have had the 3 and 4 and keep going back to Nest. I dont get it. The only thing that ecobee has over Nest are the temperature monitors.

Customer service is not knowledgeable about heat pumps at all, had to call my hvac to fix the settings the Ecobee staff had me input. Worst experience possible, no heat in the dead of winter.

I went against the advice of my HVAC contractor and GC and went with the Ecobee. I regret my decision and wish I would have gone with the Nest. The Nest has better user interface with other systems (remotes, etc) and much better customer service.

After doing considerable research and MAKING SURE that my HVAC system was compatible, I purchased this smart thermostat. After wasting hours troubleshooting, could never get it working. Finally returned. Waste of time and money.

So, wanted this to work so bad. Tried to use it, but didnt have a common wire. So had to switch to the nest. Otherwise, would have cost an arm and a leg to run a common wire. The product looks great, however, expensive to install.

I'm sorry to hear about this! Every ecobee thermostat comes with the PEK (Power Extender Kit) This device is used for people that don't have a C wire and don't want to run a new one. It gets installed at the equipment, and basically acts as a wire adapter, so you don't have to run a new wire. It's pretty easy to install, and comes in every box, if you need it or not:
