I had a Nest thermostat in my apartment and was very happy with the cost savings and other smart features. Therefore, when I moved into my house, I knew I would purchase another smart thermostat. One thing I didn't care too much for with the Nest was the Learning Feature. I felt it was too strict and only worked if you're more predictable in your comfort settings. Hence, I looked into other thermostats and came across the Ecobee. I have a 2 story home with one thermostat downstairs. The Ecobee came with an extra sensor and you could also add more sensors. I thought this would be perfect for my home. With the Ecobee installed, I could never obtain a comfortable temperature setting in the home. It seemed like the sensor readings were off. I came home one day to the house on 64 degrees, turned the heat on, and it never heated the house. I waited at least 2 hours and the sensor still read 64 degrees. I even called Ecobee support who told me it was my HVAC system and that I should call a technician to come out and look at it. It's a brand new home with a brand new HVAC so I seriously doubted this being the issue. I ended up removing the Ecobee and putting my original thermostat back on, turned on the heat, and it quickly began warming the house. Ecobee support even told me that they could see where I had temperatures set at night, but it never changed to that temperature. Other issues I had with the Ecobee included the Home / Away feature. It never registered when I was 'Away'. I never saw a way to view Energy Usage or weekly summaries of what was used (like the Nest), and the Schedule was very limited in what you could set. The app or thermostat would indicate that the air/ heat was off, but I would feel air/heat blowing from the vents. For the month I kept it installed, I didn't see any savings when it came to bills. I didn't care too much about the Alexa feature since I had an echo next to it, but I did try it out and it's fairly limited compared to an echo. I ended up purchasing the Nest, turned off the learning feature, and it's been much better.

I've been a Nest user for years, their product is simple to use and is very intuitive. But I opted for the Ecobee for my apartment because it comes with the room sensor (very helpful considering the thermostat is not located in a central location). However, the platform is complicated to use, Alexa always loses connection with the voice servers, and the Ecobee does NOT offer a fully customizable schedule like the Nest does. However, where the Ecobee shines is in its configuration settings. The Nest has a pre-defined algorithm for how to run your HVAC system (cannot adjust temperature thresholds, hold over times, etc), the Ecobee gives the user excellent control over the specifics of how you want your air to run (I adjusted mine from the factory default 0.5* threshold to 2* to keep my air off more than on). Plus, the room sensor allows you to set a temperature for a specific location (very helpful at night when keeping the bedroom cool is more important than the rest of the apartment). The Ecobee would be far better suited on a Zoned HVAC system, but even on non-zoned unit like mine, the room sensor still allows me to focus my temperature control over specific rooms to an extent.

We upgraded our Ecobee 3 with the new model hoping it would work better with our natural gas / AC. Like the Ecobee 3 it works a while then starts malfunctioning. It will run normally turning heat/ac on and off as needed, after a week it fails to start the heat but runs the fan like the heat is running. Had the HVAC guys come out and verify no issues with the gas furnace unit, and verify that I have the thermostat hooked up correctly (I did, they are super simple to install) We did a factory reset and it works again for a week or so. As the Ecobee3 had similar issues, I don't know if it is an issue with Ecobee or perhaps we have a weird HVAC system. It is only 1.5 years old.

I have mix feelings! I was excited to hear they built in Alexa! But after getting it home, I found out the features I use, like pandora for eg, don’t even work. Not to mention I have to scream for it to even hear me. Pretty disappointed there!! The price is very high for what your getting, don’t get me wrong, it does a great job at controlling temperature but after buying it I realized it was more of a compulsive buy than anything. Do you really think it cost anywhere close to 199 to build. I’m 100 percent sure not! Add lots more features and then it may be worth the price. I would say wait for the price to come down to 50 before buying.

The unit was easily installed and fairly easy to use. The problem came with the app. On my iOS devices or desktop browser it worked great. With my Android phone the app was a very poor experience. If a temperature change was made it would searching for the thermostat for several minutes before anything happened, and some times it would just time out. Since my Android is my primary device this item was returned for a Nest which works perfectly with all my devices. So if you're an Android user I do not recommend.

I have the Google Nest at my principal residence and decided to try Ecobee at my vacation apartment in CA. Unfortunately, I couldn't as unlike the Nest, this device requires special powering (C wire). While the kit is provided to enable it to work it requires access to the HVAC and installing the interface. Not really possible when you live in an apartment. I am sticking with Nest and returned it. Designed beautifully but not with the customer in mind.

It’s a good and smart thermostat but honestly had I have the chance to go back I would go with the nest, specially because I’m an Apple guy. The UI is poor, the App is buggy, the display is meh, the WiFi works only with 2.4 which is simply a pity, and Alexa doesn’t do much more than Siri on this. I would get the ecobee 3 to save some money but wait, no I wouldn’t because it’s not as good as it sounds... I would get the nest.

I have 6 Amazon Alexa units through out the house and enjoy the whole house play feature but with this Alexa thermostat, that feature is not supported just yet making the speaker useless unless if I only play music on that speaker alone. Which defeats the purpose of having whole house audio and not being able to listen thru the thermostat.

overall the product works ok, but i am extremely disappointed by the battery life of the sensor. the battery died after 2 months and customer support gave me an 11-step procedure to diagnose the problem (i simply asked them to stand behind their product and replace the battery). i replaced the battery and fixed the problem in 1 step. POOR CUSTOMER SUPPORT...buy Nest!

Works great but not a true “2 zones” thermostat

Great features, easy to install and control remotely. Geofencing is very practical BUT, even with the remote tile, you CANNOT control the dampers of your 2 zones house. This thermostat does not “pilot” the control panel that open/close the dampers directing the air flow to zone 1 or zone 2.

Overall we like this thermostat but the built in Alexa integration is lacking. We get tons of false voice pickups and responses from this device. In addition, if you turn Alexa off the light ring annoyingly glows red. Ecobee team - why does the light ring have to glow bright red with Alexa off?

I upgraded from the Ecobee3 to the Ecobee4 to streamline my Alexa capabilities on the main floor. The microphone is no where as sensitive as it should be and often times I would have to yell to get her to accept commands. If it weren't for that feature alone I would have gave it 5 stars. Everything else functions properly.

The Ecobee works fine as a Smart Thermostat. We were able to connect it to our Aprilaire Humidifier and works as expected. The app could probably be designed better, but it works. Fit and finish is ok. Looks good from a distance, up close it feels kind of cheaply made.

The sensors don't always pickup the fact your in the house even if your standing right in front of them. This can be a problem and cause your house to really cold or hot. I wold go with something else but after i put this one in I had to be out of town for a few days and the return window closed.

The thermostat is actually quite efficient, and the app is extra helpful when you need to take the temp down and you don't wanna get out of bed, the downside is that Alexa is "functional" to a degree, half the time doesn't respond, the other half, it cuts out mid sentence.

worked fine as a thermostat but the alexa would not link to my account. I patiently emailed back and forth with support but could not get the help I needed. Alexa was the reason I got this over nest , I returned it and got nest instead.

Pro: You can control AC from a mobile app remotely. Con: Unless you have been running AC 24/7, this device will not reduce electricity bill. Alexa is pretty much useless. If your thermostat is running fine, do not waste your money.

My house had a 2 wire setup and would not work with the ecobee. I called tech support and they said I would have to install a common wire from the furnace. I decided not to. I went with a nest instead and was an easy 10 minute install.

If it worked it would be a 5 star review but since the installation is not easy and will likely require professional assistance if your house is over 30 years old it is not worth it.
