I was not pleased with the lower line Nest that I had before this. I realized after a while that it Doesn’t connect with Alexa without buying and additional hub. I’m really happy with this Exobee. Nice quality and easy setup and operation.

This smart thermostat is easy to use and is a good replacement for older style thermostats, even the ones that allow you to set a schedule. It’s got Wi-Fi, a simple app, and lets you adjust your home’s temperature from anywhere. It works with most HVAC systems too. The only thing is, if you don’t have a C wire you’ll need the Power Extender Kit. My current one didn’t have one, so I had to figure that out through the app. Installing it is pretty easy though. The instructions were straightforward using the app. It shows you each step. It took me about 20 minutes, and then it was up and running.
I love the how you can use it basically like a remote start on your car to heat or cool before you get in. And it figures out how long it takes to heat or cool your place and starts early. So, if I wake up at 7 a.m., it’s already warm before I roll out of bed. Or if you're going to be gone for a few days or hours or whatever you can have the hvac come on less while no one's there and then have it at the temp you want when you get back. This one doesn't have the occupancy sensors like the higher priced ones but you can still set it up through the app to do this. Also, the AC overcool to dehumidify option is really nice. Where I live, it gets humid, and this cuts that sticky feeling without making it freezing cold.
The best part about it (and smart thermostats in general is that you can set it to keep the temperature within a set range (which you can change for heat or a/c). Where I live it can be 40 degrees overnight and 80 degrees during the day, then completely different the next day. So instead of having to flip my thermostat switch back and forth between heat and a/c I can just set the range and leave it. Also being able to set the downstairs temperature higher or lower during the night (since we're all upstairs) is nice and helps lower our power bill.
It’s compatible with most HVAC setups, even those with two stages of heating or cooling. But if your system has a ton of heating and cooling stages, it might not be enough. You could look at the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium instead. Just make sure it matches your setup before you.
The thermostat looks sleek, and the controls aren’t tough to figure out. You can adjust it right on the device or through the ecobee app on your phone. The app is really easy to use: tweak the temperature, set schedules, and check how much energy you’re saving. I've been using it with my other ecobee thermostat for a few years now and haven't had any issues. Also if you're old thermostat was bigger than this one (most are) they’ve got a trim kit that covers it up and looks nice on the wall.
The only downside I guess is that the power extender kit isn’t included, so that’s an extra cost if you need it. It’s not a huge deal, but just something to keep in mind.
Overall, I like the ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential. It’s a good entry level smart thermostat with a good set of features and isn’t hard to install, even without a C wire. Just double-check it’ll work with your system, and get the power extender kit if need it, as well as the trim kit.

I purchased this thermostat to replace my Trane thermostat, and I am happy I did. Although the previous thermostat worked great, the Ecobee allows me to customize how I want the air to run.

This thermostat was surprisingly easy to install and as long as you follow Ecobee's well-documented installation instructions AND you check to make sure it's compatible with your existing wiring, installation is a snap!
Once wired up, it mounts nicely to the wall covering where the wires come out making for a nice flush mount to the wall. Setup is a snap with the app which is definitely a good way to start out though I think you could use it without though doing so would limit the a number of "smart features". What I love about this thermostat is how easy it is to use, and how it looks. No twisting a knob to navigate to just change a simple setting.
When you connect it to your wifi, it does make it a bunch easier to configure your schedules and see your energy usage over time which is very insightful. It also has reminders for service/maintenance on your HVAC unit which is handy if you tend to forget that. I love that it detects your patterns and helps you set it so you can pre-heat/cool before a set time on a schedule or be set to help you maximize your energy efficiency which can save a ton on your bill. I haven't used this one long enough to put that to the test to see the result but based on the usage I'd say it works pretty good so far.
This one is a great option, especially if you have an old-school thermostat or one that doesn't have the latest "smart" features. Some might say you don't need all that, but literally this thing could pay for itself in one summer or cold winter if you tend to leave your thermostat set and forget it, especially if leaving for any extended period of time where the savings really does add up. I'd highly recommend this one!

The Ecobee Essential smart thermostat became available at the right time. My HVAC system was being replaced and I wanted to replace the thermostat at the same time. Since the HVAC installers installed it, I can’t comment on the thermostat install process, other than to say they had the old one removed and the Ecobee in place in less than 15 minutes.
The set up and programming was left to me. It was possible to do most of the steps on the thermostat touchscreen, but I found that putting in the Wi-Fi password and visualizing the set up sequence was much easier to do on the app. Once connected, Comfort Settings is the best place to start. This is where the ideal heat/cool temperatures are set for Home, Away, Sleep and any others as needed. Next using Schedule, the Home, Away and Sleep temperatures are assigned to different hours of the day. Schedules can be done once and then copied to other days of the week. This is similar to my old thermostat, the difference being that with the Ecobee, there is an unlimited number of comfort settings. The temperature can be set to different temperatures at multiple times throughout the day - not just when sleeping and waking up.
If I leave the house when the temperature is set at 70℉, I can quickly use the touchscreen to lower the temperature setting to 65℉ then touch the “x” when I return to resume running the current program. I figured out the best feature by accident. We went out of town for a few days and I forgot to adjust the thermostat before we left. I discovered that even when 20 miles from home, I was able to set a vacation mode in the app to hold the heat setting at 60 degrees. That was pretty amazing.
The thermostat has an Eco+ feature that allows it to take control of the thermostat and adjust the temperature for humidity and when it thinks no one is home. It does this using an internal motion sensor and my phone’s GPS, which isn't a perfect method. The display will show Eco Mode when the thermostat takes control. It’s possible to override Eco Mode if the temperature doesn’t feel right.
It took a few days for the thermostat to gather data and become familiar with my house. It also took me a few days to get it regulated. I had to set it at 70℉ for the house to feel the same as it had at 69℉ with my old thermostat. The furnace doesn’t come on at the end of Sleep and the beginning of Home. It comes on earlier so that the house is warming up before the Home time arrives. The app has been very handy during the initial adjustment time. If I’m cold, I can open the app and raise the temperature or easily adjust the Comfort Settings time. After a week, temperatures have finally stabilized.
The main selling point for this thermostat is the manufacturer's claim that it can possibly save $250 a year on energy bills. I don’t really see how the thermostat alone can do that. Maybe it could if the user wasn’t proactive about lowering the temperature setting at night or when no one was home and the Eco+ sensor did it for them. A preliminary review of my natural gas usage shows that it is actually up from the previous year, with a similar outdoor temperature. It could be because the thermostat turns the heat on ahead of a scheduled temperature change so the furnace actually runs more. I think it’s a reliable thermostat with some good features, but I’m skeptical about any savings.

We tried to go this route since it was a cheaper thermostat but the installation was more complicated than the nest and the plate that came with it was very small and we would need to buy the place separate as well. We returned it and bought the nest.

With stylish design, ease of use, and a privacy-first approach to data, the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential is a winner.
While it may sound daunting to install a smart thermostat, with the Ecobee Essential it’s simple. First, you remove your old thermostat, carefully noting where each wire was attached. While they should be color-coded, it’s best to take a photo to ensure you have the correct wires. If, like me, you don’t have air conditioning, you may have to run an extra wire to the furnace, but even this step took less than 15 minutes. Next, you mount the Ecobee wall plate using the included screws. This is a snap, as the plate has a built-in level to help you get it lined up properly. Next, you attach the wires to the correct terminals. No tiny screws to worry about here, just snap the wires into the clips. Mount the thermostat and you’re ready to install the app. Once installed, the app is easy to use and guides you through each step to connect your thermostat to your Wi-Fi network and you’re ready to go. It really is that simple.
With the app (or using Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant) it’s simple enough to set schedules and control everything remotely. I travel frequently, and having a smart thermostat allows me to set the correct temperature while I’m on the road and have a warm home when I return. The design is contemporary without looking either industrial or too techie. With a large readout on the display, everyone can see what the settings are with ease. Anyone who can use a standard digital thermostat can use the Ecobee.
What you won’t get with the Ecobee Essential are things like multi-zone monitoring or motion sensing to determine if anyone is home. There are features that my previous smart thermostat included, and I never used them.
What you gain with an Ecobee product is critical. Ecobee does not share or sell your private information. For me, this tips the scales heavily in their favor. If you care that third parties might know when you’re at work, when you go to bed, or when you’re out of town, it should matter a lot to you, too.
If you’re looking for a solid smart thermostat from a known brand, this is a great choice.

After using the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential for almost a week and being a previous user of the ecobee line of thermostat products I was no let down. Ecobee has a way of creating a User interface design that is just so simple and easy to use. The ability to set limits and lock outs for rental properties or even for your own house is one of the best things to control your utility bills. The installation of the thermostat was easy. Granted you need to ensure that your appliances and HVAC systems play nice with the Ecobee. Luckily I had no issue with compatibility which made installing the thermostat easy and simple. Once I installed the thermostat and trim kit it was a seamless interface set up. I know I already mentioned the beauty of this interface but it really is simple and intuitive. The first time I ever used this thermostat I wanted to not read the manual to see how easy it was for someone who never used the user interface to see where the issues would come up with functionality. There weren't any. Everything made sense. The icons and colors lead you precisely to the functions that you need. It is a fantastic device and I would reccommend anyone looking for a Smart Thermostat upgrade to look no further than Ecobee for a all-in-one thermostat solution that has smart features to make your life as a homeowner or landlord a breeze.
