I’ve used Nest doorbell for 4 years, thought I’d try something that worked with Apple Home Kit. This doorbell is nothing like the Nest. It doesn’t do live view very well. I’m returning it and going back to the Nest.

I really wanted to like this doorcam, it's a good product and great customer service, but couldn't get the activity notifications ironed out for my setup. I only received about half of them so I connected with their customer service (who were awesome by the way) and went through with the troubleshooting to try to fix and eventually just factory reset the device, but this still didn't work for my setup so I returned it and went with a different brand.

A Game-Changer in Home Security

If you are looking for a high-tech solution for securing your home, look no further than the Ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera (Wired). This device is the newest addition to the growing list of home security gadgets, and it is definitely one of the best. As an avid tech and security enthusiast, I was thrilled to get my hands on the Ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera (Wired), and I am happy to say that it exceeded my expectations.
Firstly, let's talk about the design and installation. The doorbell camera comes in a sleek and modern design that I found to be very pleasing to the eye. It blends in seamlessly with my home's front entrance, and it's not obtrusive in any way. The installation process was a breeze, and I was able to do it by myself in about 20 minutes. The device comes with a bracket that I used to mount it on the wall, and then I just had to connect it to my existing wires. Ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera (Wired) is designed to work with low voltage wired doorbell chimes, so there's no need to worry about compatibility issues. Everything you need for installation is included in the box.
When it comes to features, the Ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera (Wired) is packed with them. It has a 180-degree field of view and an advanced motion detection system that uses a combination of motion and audio detection to alert you when someone is at your door. The device can differentiate between people and objects, so you won't get false alarms when a car drives by or the wind blows a branch into your camera's view. You can adjust the sensitivity of the motion detection or set up custom zones to monitor specific areas of your property.
The Ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera (Wired) also features two-way audio, which means that you can speak to whoever is at your door from your phone or tablet using the Ecobee app. This feature was a particular highlight for me since I can communicate with delivery drivers and anyone who comes to my door without ever leaving the comfort of my couch. The app is easy to use, and you can view a live feed of your camera's view at any time. You can also review recorded clips from the past 14 days.
Another great thing about the Ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera (Wired) is that it integrates with Alexa and Google Assistant. You can use your voice to control the device and receive alerts on any compatible smart speaker or display. For example, you can ask Alexa to show you the live feed from your doorbell camera on your Echo Show or Fire TV, or you can ask Google Assistant to disarm the camera's motion detection when you're expecting a delivery. These integrations make the device even more convenient to use.
All in all, I highly recommend the Ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera (Wired) to anyone looking for an advanced and user-friendly home security solution. It's packed with features, easy to install, and integrates with other smart devices in your home. The motion detection and two-way audio features are particularly impressive and add an extra layer of security to your home. With the Ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera (Wired) installed, you can have peace of mind knowing that you can monitor and communicate with anyone who comes to your door, no matter where you are.

A Great Smart Doorbell

One of the first things I want to mention is the apparent dedication to treating the environment with respect. The product container is made from recycled material, and I know many of us are grateful to anyone who helps to minimize our impact on the planet.
The ecobee came well-packaged, and the packaging was obviously designed to withstand the rigors of shipping. Unpacking the ecobee Smart Wired Doorbell was easy and uncomplicated. The box contains ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera, Mounting Plates, 2x wire extenders, Chime adapter, Wire connectors, screws, and an Allen Key. They pretty much thought of everything to include. You do need a Phillips screwdriver (not a small or large head, but a medium head). This can probably vary depending on each user's individual setup.
As I examined each part of the doorbell, I noticed the assembled product has a rather large footprint, as far as doorbells go. But with the high-resolution camera (Full HD 1080p HDR) and the two-way voice capability, this is understandable. That's packing a lot of utility into a small space. The ecobee doorbell has quite the aesthetic appeal. It has a minimalistic nature, and the LED light at the bottom makes the perfect addition to its overall appeal.
Installation of the ecobee doorbell was very straightforward. The included installation guide with its instructions made my installation quite easy and simple. I know that this will be different for others depending on what type of setup they currently have. I had to use the wedge plate, and this was delightfully simple to incorporate. The one and only issue I encountered during the installation was that the two wires coming out of the exterior trim were a bit short, so I had to do some engineering to finally have enough wire to connect to the ecobee. But after that, everything was good. As far as the Wi-Fi setup, if you have done a Wi-Fi setup on one product, you have pretty much learned all you need to know. Other than a couple of nuances, this was as typical as it gets. And it is here that I do want to say that if you are a newbie to this sort of thing, it might be a bit daunting, and you may need a bit of help. Otherwise, it should be routine enough for most to be able to handle.
After everything was installed and set up, and I had a working ecobee doorbell, I decided to put it to the test. The ecobee package includes a free limited time trial for its premium software. After 60 days, if you decide to keep the premium software, it will cost you five dollars per month, or to save a bit, $60 per year, paid upfront. Without the premium software, the ecobee is lacking when compared to some other smart doorbells…no storage capabilities, no rich notifications (notifications with images), and something I would really miss is the package detection. In all honesty, I had never heard of a smart doorbell actually providing package detection, but I think it’s a fantastic idea. The one and only issue I think a person might run into is if you are like me, there are some days I receive multiple packages, and the delivery drivers will place them all over the place. I haven’t yet had the opportunity to see how the ecobee would handle this situation, but I do look forward to finding out!
The image quality is fairly decent (1080). Not the best, but it is sufficient enough to see who it is. And besides, like so many others, I also have security cameras installed around the outside of the house, so the security cameras coupled with the ecobee smart doorbell will do just fine.
So, after testing the ecobee Smart Doorbell out for several days, the question is, “Do I like it?” I have to say yes, I do. It doesn't have some of the features found in its competitor’s models, and the very limited non-subscription stand-alone features is reason for concern, but for a very good quality smart doorbell, the ecobee is a great choice. If I’m not mistaken, this is ecobee’s first foray into the smart doorbell market, so this is a great opportunity for them to build upon this particular model and offer even better smart doorbell products in the future.

Exploring ecobee's Smart Doorbell Camera

I recently had the opportunity to try out the ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera (wired), and I must say, it has exceeded my expectations in many ways. Here's a breakdown of my experience with this impressive smart doorbell:
Setup (4/5): Setting up the ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera was relatively straightforward. The package came with clear instructions, and the included mounting kit made installation a breeze. However, I did run into a minor hiccup with my existing wiring, which took a bit of troubleshooting. Once that was sorted, everything worked like a charm. I would appreciate even more detailed troubleshooting guidance in the setup process for those with unique wiring situations.
Mobile App (5/5): The mobile app that accompanies this doorbell is fantastic. It's intuitive, user-friendly, and loaded with features. I was able to customize settings, receive push notifications, and even answer the door remotely. The app also seamlessly integrated with my other ecobee smart home devices, creating a unified experience. Kudos to ecobee for a top-notch app!
Video & Audio Quality (4/5): The video quality on this doorbell camera is excellent, offering crisp 1080p resolution. I was genuinely impressed with the clarity of the footage, especially during the day. The camera's field of view is wide enough to capture everything I needed. The night vision mode was also reliable, providing clear images in low-light conditions. However, I found that sometimes the motion detection was a bit too sensitive, triggering alerts for passing cars or swaying tree branches. The two-way audio feature worked well, allowing for smooth communication with visitors at the door.
Overall Use (4/5): The ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera is a valuable addition to my smart home ecosystem. Its integration with my other ecobee products, like the thermostat, was seamless. The ability to have a video feed and intercom system at my front door gives me an added sense of security and convenience. However, there's room for improvement in terms of motion detection sensitivity and fine-tuning alerts. I would love to see more advanced AI features to distinguish between humans and other objects in the future.
In conclusion, the ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera (wired) is a solid choice for those looking to enhance their home security and smart home capabilities. It offers impressive video quality, a user-friendly app, and seamless integration with other ecobee devices. With a few minor adjustments in motion detection sensitivity, it would easily earn a perfect rating. But for now, I'm more than satisfied with my purchase and would recommend it to anyone in need of a reliable smart doorbell solution.

Awesome little video doorbell!

I've been looking for a nice reliable video doorbell for a while now. Decided to pull the trigger and get this Ecobee Smart video doorbell. It has a sleek design and a nice big button so there's no mistaking where to push for the doorbell. One thing that had its pros and cons is that it is hard wired meaning you will have to have some knowledge of wiring something electrical up unlike most of the wireless video doorbells out there. The upside is that you won't have to worry about charging this or it losing power unless your electricity goes out.
It has excellent image quality both day and night, it is only 1080p and not 4k but it doesn't disappoint for what it is. It's rated to work in down to -13 degrees all the way up to 113 degrees with IP65 waterproofing and dust protection. It has 175 degree vertical field of view that allows you to see clearly anyone coming to your door far before they get there. The Ecobee app allows for two way talking so that you can speak to someone who shows up at your door and you can also hear them as well. Excellent for mail delivery if you want to give special directions where to leave packages to avoid pesky porch pirates!
You have three choices as far as plans go for the Ecobee.. The free plan gets you two way talking, person detection, 30 day video history but with the free plan you'll only get snapshots not video, and if you have the Ecobee Smart thermostat you can see live view on that as well, the next plan which is $5 a month adds video for one camera as well as package detection. Last but not least the $10 a month plan gives you all of that plus all of the above listed for unlimited cameras plus 24/ professional monitoring and you could possibly get a discount from your home owners insurance.
It works with Alexa and Apple home kit. Ecobee has other kits available for total home security. I'd highly recommend this to others

Changed to Ecobee thermostat so it made sense to integrate the doorbell. So I swapped out my Ring doorbell for the Ecobee unfortunately that seems to be a mistake since I can’t keep the Ecobee online. I will try tech support one more time but if I can’t keep it online I will be putting back up my Ring

A Smarter Doorbell That Cut's Down On False Alerts

I was able to install this doorbell very quickly and the app's instructions are easy to follow. They are interactive and really hold your hand throughout the installation better than most I have installed. It's a very important feature to include precise instructions and Ecobee nailed it. The doorbell itself is very well designed and includes a wedge to mount it at a angle if you need to get the full view of your
doorstep. The video is greatly improved over my previous generations I own and the features are a lot better at weeding out actual alerts to cut down on false alerts. This doorbell will display it's video output on an Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium - a nice touch. The doorbell is built to withstand rain and extreme weather temperatures and the overall build quality is really good. The kit includes includes everything you're going to need to install (materials not tools) however I found that the only tool I needed was a screw driver. I highly recommended this doorbell especially if you already own a Ecobee Smart thermostat or security modules and cameras.

The best yet

I've owned 3 different video doorbells from 3 different companies, and I can honestly say the Ecobee Smart Doorbell is the best yet.
For starters, video quality is excellent, even at night. As far as I know, this is the only video doorbell with HDR, and I believe it makes a difference, especially in low light. I also love the Smart Focus feature. It is currently in beta, but it's amazing. It keeps a moving object (a person, animal, etc.), in focus and pans and zooms to keep them in the frame, but still keeps keeps the same 1080p quality. The app is well-done, too. It has typical options like motion detection, person detection, and package detection. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that I was unable to find a way to keep the camera from recording our dog. So our yellow lab has become the unwitting star of a number of videos. An animal detection option would be a nice addition.
I also like the fact that the Smart Doorbell uses radar for motion detection, so leaves and moths won't trigger notifications.
The Smart Doorbell comes with 2 free months of "Standard" subscription, normally $5/month, which give you access to 30 days of video recording, package detection, and rich notifications (a snapshot of what's going on at your door in your notifications area on your phone). I believe it's worth $5 for the added features. Ecobee also offers a "Complete" subscription for $10/month which adds professional monitoring for added security.
I highly recommend the Ecobee Smart Doorbell. It has many of the typical features video doorbells offer, but innovates with radar and better video through the use of HDR. It offers excellent audio, as well. The app has been well thought out, and subscriptions for added features are reasonable.

Almost there?

First, install was quick and easy. I even went through and did a factory reset on it to change the network I configured to a network with better signal.
There are only a couple issues I have with this doorbell. I'll get to those shortly. One is with the app the other is with compatibility.
The build of the bell is really considerate to something I would never have thought of. The holes align prefect with the size of a standard brick so you can make holes thru mortar rather than brick. A definite bonus there. Well designed hardware and thoughtfully put together.
Attaching the remote/ringer to the pre wired house bell was very easy and I had that done in a couple minutes. Attach two wires to the chime box and you are set there. Required loosening two screws and crimping the wires with included twist caps to the wires that were removed.
Attaching the doorbell was almost as simple. Two wires removed from old doorbell and connected to the new. Hardest part was finding the right breaker to flip off and remembering how the old smart doorbell came off the mounting base.
I would say it took about 15 minutes to get everything installed.
Now why did I drop a star and what are the issues. One affects me, and probably a large portion of the potential customers. As of this writing the Ecobee doorbell does not integrate with Google Home Assistant. It works with Alexa and Apple, allegedly with Smart Things but I need to confirm that one as I found instructions but not from Ecobee. Speaking with support a feature request has been submitted on my behalf to have that Google added.
The second issue I have, the app for Android will not allow you to zoom in, rotate the screen to landscape, or really change the view of the live camera nor recordings unless you download the video and play in another app. There is no full screen view I can use. The cam can do a wide screen from the preview, but I can not see that view from a live view nor recording. This should be fixed in future app updates.
Basically, after they fix some issues in the app and add functionality (Google) this is a keeper of a doorbell. Presently if you are Google Home, you will rely on the Ecobee app. That may be a deal breaker. But before dismissing the Ecobee Doorbell, check to see if Google integration has been implemented.

A well thought out smart doorbell

This ECOBEE Doorbell replaces a year-old doorbell from a different manufacturer. There was nothing wrong with the old unit, I simply wanted to pursue a different technology. I also like ECOBEE products and feel that they’ll do well in the doorbell sector.
Replacing the old doorbell and installing the new only took a couple of hours. The biggest issue was determining how to deinstall the old doorbell since it was installed by the builder, and then drilling into brick to mount the new ECOBEE. This new ECOBEE comes with the doorbell/camera unit, a slanted wall mount, screws, a chime adapter, and other miscellaneous bits and pieces.
Prior to deinstalling the old doorbell, I had to determine which electrical panel breaker was providing power to the unit. Unfortunately, the builder’s electricians decided to forego documenting that important piece of information, so I spent a fair amount of time going from breaker to breaker until it was found. Sounds simple, but the challenge was that the old doorbell had an internal battery allowing it to continue working even after the breaker switch was turned off. Add to that, my breaker panel does not have a master breaker so I couldn’t just cut the power to the whole house if I needed to do so.
My home’s doorbell chime inside the house met the power requirements needed for compatibility, which is a voltage rating of 16v-24v and a minimum power rating of 10va.
Since I already own two ECOBEE thermostats and, I had previously installed the ECOBEE app. As such, I didn’t need to download the app nor create a new account. The app has a link to an online installation tutorial, which made the installation process super easy.
Everything went smoothly with the new installation, thus far, it is meeting my expectations. Like the older now-removed doorbell, I especially like the alert when someone approaches my front door. I haven’t had any packages delivered since going live, so I can’t confirm that the package alert feature works as designed.
Among its many features, the app allows you to set up an Activity Zone and a Detection Range. The Activity Zone essentially lets you tweak how large of an area the camera will monitor to notify you of alerts. The Detection Range lets you choose how far movement away from the camera will generate an alert. Per the app, it is limited to 7 feet, 10 feet, 20 feet, and 30 feet.
The app also had a Beta feature called Smart Focus that I have turned on, that automatically “pans and zooms to keep motion, people and packages in view.”
The app’s Audio feature lets you turn on/off the microphone, as well as specifying how loud the volume will be. The app’s Video options let you turn on/off the Night Vision features (they recommend leaving this on) and to specify if you want the camera to be on/off by default.
When viewing the live camera feed, you can tap the Talk button, Record a video, take a Snapshot, and turn on the Siren.
Not surprisingly, the doorbell is performing perfectly. The installation process was simple, and all went as planned. If I had one request, it would be to ask for more control over what the various notification alerts sound like.
I’m giving the ECOBEE a 5-star review.

The Ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera is just perfect.
Comes in a nice well packaged box. Setup is definitely different from other brands of doorbells, with the ecobee smart doorbell you have to make sure
1. You have an ac transformer of 16-24v ac at 10va minimum, I have a 16v at 15va transformer on my existing door bell.
2. If you have a rear doorbell, you need to either have a rear door bell button with no light or cut the light out. (This system will not work with lighted doorbells, the Ecobee doorbell does work but the rear doorbell does not work, I cut the light out and then the rear doorbell started working).
Setup……..
you download the ecobee app if you have not already, log in or create an account, then start adding the doorbell.
The app gives you picture and text to the setup process and a lot of them so you really can’t get it wrong.
You have a module you put in the existing door bell, if you have one, and it really is easy, I used white tape and labeled each wire on the old doorbell as I pulled the wire off.
You scan the code in the manual it comes with to add to Apple HomeKit.
NOTE: I have the ecobee premium smart thermostat and lo and behold the doorbell works stunningly great together.
The picture quality is so good, I have to say the picture competes with the very best 4K video cameras I have seen and the ecobee doorbell is 1080p.
The doorbell functions perfectly as a doorbell. Rings your existing door bell, ecobee phone app, HomeKit, and ecobee smart premium thermostat.
The picture can be seen by the app, HomeKit, or premium thermostat, and it looks stunning.
The doorbell also functions as a security camera and works extremely well at that.
Someone walks up to the door you installed the doorbell at and the ecobee app notifies you instantly.
You can also arm and disarm and use stay mode.
You have the option of security monitoring and also a great new feature that tracks movement, it basically zooms in on the person moving, it’s still in beta BUT actually works good.
You can play back all the motion that happens in front of the doorbell in the ecobee app.
I really love that when the doorbell is pushed you get instant video on the ecobee thermostat and you can answer the doorbell if you want to as your phone also.
I am really blown away by just how perfect the picture is and functionality of the doorbell.
Some of the features do cost a little but not needed as a doorbell.

WHATS IN THE BOX:
1. Doorbell/Camera system
2. 2x wire extenders
3. Chime adapter (integrate with your existing home bell chime)
4. Wire connectors
5. Mountain plates and a wedge to change viewing angle (20°)
6. Screws & Drywall anchors
I've always had a preference for wired smart doorbells given the convenience factor of not having to pull off to recharge. Most also have improved monitoring and image quality as the logic isn't set to conserve power. One thing to note is that with any smart wifi-centric doorbell, you need to have a good internet signal to have it running. Oftentimes, the doorbell is an afterthought so having something like a mesh network to provide full home coverage helps ease the headache of setting one of these up. It's important to note that this is intended to be used with a proper wired connection (16 to 24 Volts AC, 10 VA min) - there is no battery in the doorbell camera! Some smart doorbells have the option to be used wired or battery but this is device is not one of those.
The doorbell camera has a solid build (just under 1 lb). The camera component has a 5MP sensor that can shoot videos at 1920x1080 (1080p HDR video) at up to 30 FPS. This sounds good on paper but the actual video quality can take some time to actually show up in the app properly. Generally speaking, the user experience with the camera is probably its greatest downfall- when you open the app, it takes a bit of time for the video to pop up and can be a bit grainy at first before the picture quality really kicks in. I don’t know if this is just my wireless connection on my phone or what but it’s not GREAT. On top of that I know that once this 30-day trial is over, I won’t have ANY videos available to me without the subscription package- other doorbells that I’ve used at least have up to one-day’s worth of video recordings locally stored on the device. Regardless of the lighting and time of day, I’d say the picture quality is pretty good and the black and white infrared footage at nighttime is also sufficient to make out different objects easily. Temperature limits for this device can go from -13°F to 113°F. It’s also IP65 rated for regular water and dust resistance. One nice feature is the ability to modify detection zones to exclude the high-traffic areas (like a busy street or a public parking area) so you’re not constantly getting pinged for randoms beyond your property limits – limit can be set to as close at 10 ft up to ~30 ft. There’s also a zoom function but I didn’t bother messing with that setting as I’d like to see everything. There’s an interesting SIREN button, which you can activate remotely as a “just in case” feature, which I really appreciate. Another fun feature is that this doorbell camera integrates with Ecobee thermostats so you can use them as a screen- unfortunately, I don’t use an Ecobee thermostat so I couldn’t check this feature. I think I’d usually end up using my phone or AppleTV anyway so it’s not a necessary accessory. This system integrates with HomeKit just fine but it’s not yet fully integrated enough to utilize Apple HomeKit Secure Video (utilizing iCloud to store videos). This just means that you will very much need to pay for Ecobee’s subscription service which is VERY much needed to use this device to any reasonable level of functionality. There’s no onboard storage so, without a plan, you only get snapshots after the 30-day trial period. Minimally, you’d want to go for their Standard plan which is $50/yr or $5/mo. It’s not much but I hate that it’s another terrible subscription service that you have to pay for. The heavy reliance on the subscription plan without current (Oct 2023) integration into HomeKit Secure Video is why I gave it the 3/5 stars.
