Screws & Drywall anchors I've always had a preference for wired smart doorbells given the convenience factor of not having to pull off to recharge. Most also have improved monitoring and image quality as the logic isn't set to conserve power. One thing to note is that with any smart wifi-centric doorbell, you need to have a good internet signal to have it running. Oftentimes, the doorbell is an afterthought so having something like a mesh network to provide full home coverage helps ease the headache of setting one of these up. It's important to note that this is intended to be used with a proper wired connection (16 to 24 Volts AC, 10 VA min) - there is no battery in the doorbell camera! Some smart doorbells have the option to be used wired or battery but this is device is not one of those. The doorbell camera has a solid build (just under 1 lb). The camera component has a 5MP sensor that can shoot videos at 1920x1080 (1080p HDR video) at up to 30 FPS. This sounds good on paper but the actual video quality can take some time to actually show up in the app properly. Generally speaking, the user experience with the camera is probably its greatest downfall- when you open the app, it takes a bit of time for the video to pop up and can be a bit grainy at first before the picture quality really kicks in. I don’t know if this is just my wireless connection on my phone or what but it’s not GREAT. On top of that I know that once this 30-day trial is over, I won’t have ANY videos available to me without the subscription package- other doorbells that I’ve used at least have up to one-day’s worth of video recordings locally stored on the device. Regardless of the lighting and time of day, I’d say the picture quality is pretty good and the black and white infrared footage at nighttime is also sufficient to make out different objects easily. Temperature limits for this device can go from -13°F to 113°F. It’s also IP65 rated for regular water and dust resistance. One nice feature is the ability to modify detection zones to exclude the high-traffic areas (like a busy street or a public parking area) so you’re not constantly getting pinged for randoms beyond your property limits – limit can be set to as close at 10 ft up to ~30 ft. There’s also a zoom function but I didn’t bother messing with that setting as I’d like to see everything. There’s an interesting SIREN button, which you can activate remotely as a “just in case” feature, which I really appreciate. Another fun feature is that this doorbell camera integrates with Ecobee thermostats so you can use them as a screen- unfortunately, I don’t use an Ecobee thermostat so I couldn’t check this feature. I think I’d usually end up using my phone or AppleTV anyway so it’s not a necessary accessory. This system integrates with HomeKit just fine but it’s not yet fully integrated enough to utilize Apple HomeKit Secure Video (utilizing iCloud to store videos). This just means that you will very much need to pay for Ecobee’s subscription service which is VERY much needed to use this device to any reasonable level of functionality. There’s no onboard storage so, without a plan, you only get snapshots after the 30-day trial period. Minimally, you’d want to go for their Standard plan which is $50/yr or $5/mo. It’s not much but I hate that it’s another terrible subscription service that you have to pay for. The heavy reliance on the subscription plan without current (Oct 2023) integration into HomeKit Secure Video is why I gave it the 3/5 stars.

Great first-dive into the smart-doorbell market! Ecobee has long been a leader in the smart thermostat arena with a long legacy of quality products. Taking that reputation into the smart-doorbell they hit a huge home-run. Inside the box you'll find the doorbell, backplate with security screw, wedgemount, chime adapter and hardware envelope. Once unboxed, I was immediately impressed witht he overall build quality and feel of the doorbell. I have used and tested several smart doorbells and this one is right there witht he upper-end of those units. It is also on the heavier and larger end of the doorbells I have used and tested. This is a good thing as it echoes confidince in the device. Installation was not hard, but was a little involved. It all starts with the app so that is step one. Once you have the app, it walks you through the installation process. The mounting the doorbell is simple. A few screws, connect the wires and that is done. As for the chime adaapter, it was a little more involved. I am perfectly comfortable doing this type of project so just gave it a little time, attention to detail and followed the Ecobee process and it was done. If you are not that person, you may want to call in a family member or friend who IS that kind of person. Once it was installed, the camera quality is some of the best I have seen in any doorbell. Impressive. As for the tech specs and what this device does, I'm not going to get into that because it's all pretty self explanatory and expected. End of the day, this is a great choice!

The Ecobee Smart Video Doorbell is a standout device that has delivered on both functionality and aesthetics, and I'm happy to add another Ecobee device to the house. Its attractive, in style and avoids feeling flimsy or cheap. The installation process was very straightforward, taking about 45 minutes from start to finish. As expected with having installed other Ecobee products, the app effectively guided me through each step and made the setup process incredibly intuitive and easy to follow. One of the exceptional features of this doorbell, and probably most important, is its image quality. The camera captures crisp and clear photos, and every detail is visible, both day and night. Video looks great as well. If you have an Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium, you can pull up a live view of the doorbell, but I personally find it easier to pull it up from my phone. I also feel the need to mention that the timing of image capture is spot-on, capturing images precisely when needed when someone approaches the door. I did encounter some issues when it came to accurately detecting packages even with the setting available and on, which, unfortunately, never seemed to work as intended. I don't like that this feature is behind a paywall, either. I'm happy to see features such as activity zone setup, detection range which wasn't a feature on my last doorbell, and smart focus. It's nice to have activity zone set up to not go off every time a car drives down the street. Despite the package detection hiccup, the Ecobee Smart Video Doorbell has simply been an overall joy to have. It adds a layer of security and convenience that my family likes having. The ability to monitor the doorstep remotely and respond if away has been invaluable. While there's a little room for improvement in the package detection feature, the device's overall performance and reliability should absolutely make it a worthwhile addition to any home security setup, especially to any existing Ecobee ecosystem.

This is a great smart doorbell and it's a plus that I can no control my thermostats from the same app as my smart doorbell. Installation was a little tricky on my 4" high vinyl siding which is why I didn't give it 5 stars. The doorbell is advertised to work with any front door setup, but I will need to buy an adapter to make it flush to area where my doorbell wiring is. I already had my doorbell transformer and chime updated for another smart doorbell, so this worked right out of the box. It was also easy to install the chime adapter. I noticed I had to wait some time for the doorbell's battery to charge before it would actually ring my hardwired doorbell chime, but the app was upfront about this potentially happening. I also actually had to activate my free trial in order to get the person and package motion detection and so far it's not 100% perfect but I suspect that is software because it's such a new device. Overall, it looks really great in my front door area - it is bigger than comparable products but still looks sleek. Despite these hiccups with installation and the alerts working intermittently, I still highly recommend the doorbell. It's a huge plus I can use the same for my thermostats as my smart doorbell and also see the front door camera view from my thermostats. In addition, I can integrate it with homekit to control it with my Apple devices. Overall it's a great product, especially for the first iteration of a smart doorbell by Ecobee.

This is pretty much a standard item by now. If you've ever installed a smart doorbell, there are no catches here. If you haven't, it's pretty straightforward. Unlike some systems, such as Ring, that have battery options and can be ran without the transformer, though, this REQUIRES a transformer. So make sure of that before purchase. Install was straight forward. A bit less for me, since I was REMOVING my Ring camera to test this. I didn't have any subscriptions to the Ring doorbell, so I was hoping that, since this one at least allows for snapshots held for 30 days, it would give me more than the Ring did without a subscription. Ring all I could do is view live and talk/listen and get a notice if someone was at the front door. No way to look at history. This, while it won't save VIDEO clips without paying each month, it does at least store snapshots to view for up to 30 days. There are no printed instructions, just the photos and text in the Ecobee app when you go to add a device. I'm split about things like this - I really prefer a printed manual, but I understand companies trying to save paper and all. Not a fan of the allen wrench for the "security" screw on the bottom of this. I prefer the little screwdriver like tool that came with Ring doorbells, since it's easier to turn. This only lets you turn it part way, remove it, reinsert it 180 degrees off, and turn half a turn again, since the doorbell is up against the wall and won't allow a full 360 degree rotation for the allen wrench. If you have other tools with allen heads though, you can use them. App found it right away, and I had no issues tying it to my account, although I had to set up an authenticator app to get it finished, something I hadn't needed since I only had the smart thermostat here previously. But since I already had authenticator apps on my phone for other things, it only took a minute. It has a nice, crisp picture for the video, but the zooming is just awful, and very pixelated. You can't adjust the view at all, other than using the small angle bracket if you need it tilted left or right. You can manually edit the detection zone, and it allows for 8 points of articulation - three on bottom, three on top, two on the sides, so you can do more than just a standard square or rectangle. The radar sensitivity can be adjusted, so it only detects within 7 feet, 10 feet, 20 feet, or 30 feet. There is a "Smart Focus" beta option that automatically pans and zooms to keep motion, people, and packages in view. I was disappointed that I don't see a way to view this from a webpage, when I log into my Ecobee account on their website. Under the settings app for the doorbell there is an integrations setting that has Homekit as an entry, so I assume there's some way it integrates with that. I don't use it, so I can't say. I was able to link it to my Alexa without any issues. Now I can say, "Alexa, show me doorbell," and I see the screen. Worked without any issues. Doesn't seem to stop though, I've yet to figure out the command to stop it. Fortunately my Echo show devices at least gave me the X on the top right to close the video feed. Apparently it does a 2 minute video recording when someone triggers it. I walked from my driveway up the walkway to my door, and entered the door. It started a 2 minute recording of it. Most of it being 1:45 of nothing after I got in the house. I had looked in the app to change the length of the recording but apparently you can't. It DID try to do its smart focus beta thing, but it was horrible - totally pixelated the video, seemed to focus on my torso, so it totally cut off the view of my face. What good is a security video of someone at your door that you may want to give to police to ID a potential suspect when the video won't show his face? At least it's in beta, so hopefully THAT improves. Night vision seems to be pretty good. I have a couple other outdoor security cameras in the area, so their IR is enhancing this one's range, and when I turn them off, while my porch is lit up well, the walk way isn't quite so great. But considering the size of the camera here, position, and the IR emitters, it's still better than I had expected. The downside is that the chime I had that worked with the previous doorbells, doesn't work here. It is a digital one, but it's designed to be wired in just like a standard chime, so it has the wiring block for back, front, transformer, etc. It worked with the Ring doorbell, but not here. That alone may be reason enough for me to dump this and go back to the Ring doorbell. I don't want to be dependent on hearing my smart phone tell me someone's at the door. The digital chime has my kid, from like 15 years ago when he was just a little thing, yelling, "Someone's at the door!" It's adorable, and works great with every other doorbell I've ever used here. Just not the Ecobee. I've reached out to support to find out if they've ever encountered this before. Unfortunately all support was able to do was send me the same drawing that has nothing to do with the setup I described. I explained exactly which four wires are accessible at the chime location, and they then give me a diagram that is actually impossible from what I can see. yet what I have worked fine with a chime with a standard doorbell and worked fine with the Ring doorbell. So I will definitely be putting the Ring back in, and tossing out the Ecobee. Too bad, as I have used their thermostats since they first came on the scene, and have had no issues. But clearly they're not ready for prime time with doorbells. All in all it's a decent doorbell though, but I got my Ring 2 doorbell for a third less than this one costs, so I'm not sure of the value compared to its competitors. But it has a solid camera and functions well other than if you want it to use existing chimes. If you just need something that goes straight to your transformer for power and has no chimes inside, then you should be OK. Otherwise, I'd look at the one that's been around for a while and proven.

When I heard that Ecobee was releasing a doorbell I was incredibly excited. I am huge fan of their thermostats and have one for each zone of my home. I've also bought them as gifts for other members of my family. Even my parents, who are intimidated by any technology beyond that of the days of flip phones find them easy to use. Maybe it's that I set my expectations too high for a brand new product when I started with the thermostats in the third generation. Maybe it's that I'm a little confused by the route they chose to go with the feature set. I not sure. I just know that for 1080P, I find the image quality a bit lacking as compared to other video doorbells I've owned that are also 1080P. It's not bad by any means though, and I think most people would be perfectly happy with it. I'm also not thrilled that I can't do 100% offline recording like with other products I've owned. Or at the very least Homekit Secure Video. There are those of us that are not really interested in adding ANOTHER subscription service to our already cluttered mix. Homekit compatibility to use Homepods a chimes or view the feed on my Apple TV is nice, but I don't really care about that so much. I'm hoping a future software update will enable Homekit Secure Video. Overall, if you don't care at all about Homekit compatibility or needing a subscription to really take advantage of the best features, then this is a solid option. I wouldn't go so far as to say I would recommend against buying it, but at this time I wouldn't go out of my way to either.

Absolutely no issues. Works as advertised. I am thrilled with the integration of the Ecobee line. Went from a competitor product to this and the amount of irrelevant notifications has reduced by almost 100%!

For apple users its lacking homekit secure video which I believe is a really useful feature!

It either hardly records any events or gives you constant notifications, while still missing major events. Trying to zoom is incredibly slow. It is almost as if it is trying to zoom a telescopic lense rha has to physically move but isn’t. It seems like the worlds dumbest idea for a neat “feature”. It also frequently takes almost a minute to load. So if someone rings the doorbell and you want ti respond you had better hope they are patient otherwise they will probably leave before you can even see who was there

Average Doorbell at Best. I just upgraded our thermostat and went with Ecobee. I decided to do the doorbell as well, kind of as a pair. BIG mistake. I had a Blink doorbell prior to this and while it wasn't broken, I decided to upgrade anyway. This is slow resounding. Slow connecting. I have solid WiFi inside and out. Simply because of all of the work that went in to the installation, I am giving this a couple of days before I decide if it's going back or not. I am definitely leaving towards yes.

Notifications are very slow. The live feed in the app also takes 3-5 seconds to load. HKSV support solves both these issues as well as some other like no face recognition. But alas, no HKSV support. The thermostat integration is neat but not worth the hassle of the a slow notifications and live stream loading.
