This product was great with my EcoBee Thermostat, Easy to pair and worked well at first. However at the end of the 3 month trial of the subscription, I had believed based on what I had seen online, that I would loose a number of neat features but the main features would still work. This turned out to no be the case. As soon as the trail ran out the entire security options went away. Really all these sensor do without it is chime when a door opens if you want. It no longer will be an alarm of any kind. Secondly; Would be a great thing if the security features were added to HomeKit to be able to arm/disarm right there with the rest of the smart home. Since the thermostat is HomeKit enabled, and the sensors can be seen in the HomeKit app, I would think it would be easy for developers to add this.

Nowhere in the product description that I could find does it mention that these sensors WILL NOT WORK if you don't have an ecobee thermostat or camera already installed in your homekit setup. And now I am stuck with a completely useless ecobee account as well, because that is the first step in the setup process before you find out the thing won't work.

Logical add-on for the Ecobee smart camera system

The Ecobee Smart sensors for doors/windows works in conjunction with a Ecobee smart camera system. There are a ton of different things you can add to the smart camera system, such as sensors (these), thermostats as well as motion sensors. Think of the smart camera as the brain to all the connected devices. These sensors are simple. You pull the tab out of the back to connect the battery and link it with your camera. There are youtube videos in case you cant figure it out, but there are also instructions in the box and on the website. It is fairly intuitive, and it will not take you long to link them to the camera. Once installed, they are linked and you let them do their job. They are basically magnets. As the door or window is closed, the magnets are together. As the door or window opens, the magnets separate and the alarm triggers. They are similar to any alarm you install in the house, they are just shaped differently and are only compatible with Ecobee products. I have seen people install them on the sides of the door, but I do the horizontal top part because I have kids that are animals. If they can figure out how to destroy something they will. Also, I noticed that they don’t have to be lined up perfectly to work. If they are slightly off, they still work fine. The battery is supposed to last for years. According to the manual, it says up to 3 years. That is ideal for high windows, so you don’t have to change them often. I have no way of knowing just how long they last, or what factors would eat the battery the fastest. But the idea of things lasting 3 years is awesome. I read a little about a way you can use an automatic monitoring feature based on the location of registered smart phones. I am trying to figure that one out still. The idea is to arm and disarm based on cell phone locations. I think that is a great feature, I just need to try it out. I have not gotten that far with it yet. Also, if you feel like it you can add home monitoring to your system or monitor it yourself from your smart phone. So, it is fairly versatile in that respect. I like having the option to do either one, and changing later if I want to. If you have a smart camera from Ecobee, these are a no brainer add on. It is a great starter to get a connected home system going. Again, this is just a add on to the camera system. So take a look at that before deciding on this, as it is not compatible with other systems. But, I think it works well and does its job perfectly.

Hybrid sensor, must pay for notifications

The Ecobee smart sensor for doors and windows is marketed as a part of their home monitoring/security portfolio. Because I'm not really interested in paying a monthly charge for basic notifications and functionality, that's not my use case. Design-wise, these sensors are much like others on the market; they mount with double-sided tape and are essentially a magnetic switch. What sets them apart, and makes them useful in my setup, is the built-in motion sensor. I paired the sensors to my Ecobee thermostat so it can have even more pieces of information to work with in deciding how to heat and cool my home (I also have a pair of the regular smart sensors which relay motion and ambient temperature readings). For that, these guys have worked well. As I said at the beginning, these really are designed to be used in a home monitoring setup. If you pay the $5-$10 a month for Ecobee's Haven service, you can get notifications when the sensor identifies movement or the door/window is opened. They can also trigger an Ecobee camera if you have one. As I said, I'm unwilling to pay for yet another monthly subscription to get the basic functionality almost all of Ecobee's competitors provide for free. Add to that the relatively high price point of the hardware and you can get into the stratosphere pretty quickly. But for my purposes, it works.

Requires Haven to be Really Useful

Requires Haven (subscription) for full functionality otherwise it requires manual monitoring and can't be added to Apple HomeKit. EcoBee has made setting up new devices really simple; scanning the QR code through the app and adding to the system. Getting installed is simple, the EcoBee app walks you through the best way to physically mount it for your door/window. A bit frustrating though that EcoBee decided this device requires their Haven description for full functionality. Their other devices work just fine with Apple's HomeKit and without Haven but not these door sensors. Without haven all they can do is let you know if the door is opened or closed. And even then you have to check the EcoBee app because you won't get a notification otherwise. Same with the motion/occupancy sensor without Haven, you can't even use it. I can see the usefulness of the motion sensor being leveraged to turn on lights via HomeKit, but since they don't pair at all, that's a missed opportunity. I understand that subscriptions are the new normal, but to drastically limit built in features to subscription only is a bit annoying. I have every other EcoBee product, they all work just fine without Haven, so I'd give this one a pass and recommend you get a standard alarm system that has remote monitoring built in (and will call the police for you if needed).

A smart sensor but a not so smart monthly fee

This review is written based on the Ecobee SmartSensors for doors and windows being used with the Ecobee Smart Camera and the Ecobee SmartSensors ( used with the thermostat) and the Haven monitoring service. You have to look at the Ecobee products as an entire ecosystem rather just the individual components. Also, these sensors only work Ecobee products. For a full understanding, please see my review of the Ecobee camera. First thing to be aware of, the Ecobee SmartSensors for doors and windows are entry and motion sensors – do not confuse them with the Ecobee Smartsensor for thermal sensing. Note to Ecobee – why would you name the two different products with essentially the same name ? It’s confusing to the consumer. The Ecobee SmartSensors for doors and windows are a two fold device that senses both motion and when someone opens a door and window. There is two parts to it, the sensor main body and a magnet . Both mount next to each other on a door or window. If the door or window opens, the magnetic field is broken and the sensor sends an alert. The motion sensor works like any other motion sensor on the market. Setup is simple and straight forward, just like any of the other Ecobee products I hae reviewed. In this case, you pull a tab on the device that lets the battery connect, scan a QR code in to the app and adhere the sensor to a door or window. I have to say Ecobee really has the set up down on all their products , it is easy and fast . The sensors do what they are supposed to do , for the most part. Opening a door and the sensor goes off with little latency. Motion sensing seemed to be a bit more hit and miss, make sure to adjust your sensitivity if they do not seem to react as expected. There are issues with both the Ecobee sensors and Ecobee ecosystem. First, these sensors are $80 for two sensors. That is more expensive than a lot of the competition. Yes, you get the advantage of that it senses motion and entry but what is point of having a motion sensor on an entry sensor is it is on a door that will go odd anyway or a window that will have a curtain covering the sensor. When you compare it to the Google Nest sensor ( $100 for two ), the competitor puts a lot more into their sensor – motion ( Ecobee has this,) light, accelerometer, magnetometer ( Ecobee has this,) temperature, humidity and tamper detection. The big issue with Ecobee is you have to pay for the Ecobee Haven home monitoring service. Think about this, you just spent $280+ for Ecobee camera, two SmartSensors and two SmartSensors for and you cannot monitor your home ( or record video) without paying an additional monthly fee. If you do not pay, you do not get any of the features you really bought the sensors and the system for. I understand that Ecobee is trying to monetize their ecosystem but they are facing competition that has a developed, mature ecosystem that , in nearly all cases, offers many of the features of their system for free. Based on that , I cannot recommend this product . It is a shame because all the Ecobee products seem to be well built and they make the best thermostats I have ever seen. Sadly, I am going to cancel my service after a month is up ( 1st month is free) and box up the components. Why am going to pay for something when I have Samsung Smarthings and Arlo that do it for free?

So far these sensors haven’t let me down. No false notifications as of yet. I’m very pleased with the aesthetic and how easy it was to set up with my existing system. The sensors serve two functions. The first function serves to notify if the door is open. The second function says to notify if there’s any movement in front of the sensors which is extremely convenient. They can be spaced apart a decent amount before losing connection. The green light in the sensors let you know if the sensors are activated and connected.

I am excited to get to test out new home security gadgets and incorporate them into my home monitoring. We live in a safe neighborhood, but it is hard to put a price on peace of mind and that is exactly what these products do. The presentation for these items is very well indeed. The sensor is well built, sleek, and easy to install. The door / window sensors are of a better build quality then some of their competitors. I have or have tested several different versions of these I would choose this model over the others. I have this full review on the camera too, which I would highly recommend to add as well. Setup was easy and quick. I downloaded the app, built an account, added my devices, and I was up and operational. I even reset everything to see how that went and it too was quick and easy. While using the app, I subscribed to Haven for the 14 -30-day free trial. This process was painless and free to cancel anytime. To cancel though you must go to the Ecobee website, use the support link, and search cancel. Doing this will provide you the email request address. We have been getting a kick out of the share ability. I then thoroughly cleaned the windows edge and easily plied both the sensor and magnet to the window frame. I the sensor as again the “Sticky” in this line of products I have seen and stay where you put them. So far, I really like the Ecobee’s version on home monitoring and think these are wonderful. My only concern would be the subscription has to be active to be able to record and review. Whereas, not expensive by any means per month, I would want to see even more features or perks afforded to me the subscriber, even at that monthly rate.

Great sensor in Ecobee home security system

These door sensors do what exactly you think they're supposed to do. They detect when doors or windows are opened. They are composed of 2 parts that are connected magnetically. When the magnetic attraction is broken, the sensors are triggered. Now, these sensors cannot be used independently. So if you just want an independent door alarm, this is NOT the item for you. The strength of these sensors like all Ecobee devices is in the context of a smart home or when they are integrated with other smart devices. You can find out when someone has opened a door or window with this sensor, detect motion in the house with the smart sensor, or capture them on video with the smart camera. The big thing to note is that these sensors can only be used with a Haven subscription service. This service is mainly for the Ecobee SmartCamera. It will allow notifications, video recording, and cloud storage. Otherwise, you will not get alerts and notifications. The Haven monthly subscription service is 5$ for support for one camera and 10$ for support for unlimited cameras. 5-10$ a month is not a huge amount, but having to pay a monthly fee to basically have notifications and use 80$ sensors may be a deal breaker. All in all, these sensors are great if you want an Ecobee smart home. Otherwise, they are pointless.

I recently upgraded my ecobee system to include the home camera, door sensors, and smart sensors. The door sensors have been a nice touch lately because I can see when my wife gets home from work and it sends me a notification when I’m still at work and it’s almost like I’m walking in the door being greeted by the pups The door sensors pair with your camera to immediately detect when the doors open and occupancy in the room. The notifications come straight to my phone and are a lot of fun to watch sometimes including random videos from my dogs. Pairing this with the ecobee haven system allows alarm monitoring of my home at a fraction of the cost. The door sensors and window sensors pack were sufficient enough to cover my front and side door and 2 main windows downstairs that I’m worried about unwanted entry. The batteries of the sensors supposedly last 3 years and were super easy to install. All in all so far I am happy with the door and window sensors and I’m impressed by the ability to add family members to the auto detection in the camera. Being able to disarm the alarm with facial recognition is super cool! I highly recommend this Ecobee system to anyone looking to integrate your home ac controls and alarm systems all into one!

If your home does not have a preinstalled security system or you live in an apartment these door/window sensors are a great choice to give you peace of mind when you’re not able to be home. One of the big things that really impressed me was how easy it was to set up these door sensors. Also, it’s kind of nice they have two purposes, for one they can detect if the door or window is open by the magnetic sensor it has. But also, at the same time it has a motion sensor built in as well. All the events either opening/closing or motion can be tracked in the ecobee app and as long as you pay for there monitoring service you can even have the app auto arm the system. I’m very impressed with how easy it was to set the sensors up as well. All I had to do was take a picture of the QR code that was on the back. There is not much else to say, the product just works and whenever you have the system “armed” if the sensor triggers you get a notification from the app.
