    Low-Profile Sensor That Works Great

There isn't much that needs to be said about the ecobee SmartSensor for doors and windows. I only tested one, but it's incredibly low-profile, and work just as intended (outside of the ecobee Haven feature). I actually had a small problem with the setup. Before doing anything, I would HIGHLY recommend you first start with the app and adding devices from there. I had already understood what I needed to do by removing the block between the battery and device (which also has an important QR code on it), but the instructions in the app—which are super clear and concise, by the way—first want you to begin the instructions before removing the block, as it asks you to scan the QR code on the block, or enter a code manually. By the time I began adding the device through the app, it wasn't detecting the SmartSensor, and this caused me to have to unplug my SmartCamera, restart my phone, and open the SmartSensor to disable the battery for some two minutes. This then allowed me to start the process over. Once I got past the problem, the rest of the instructions had the SmartSensor up and running in a few minutes. I had one connected to my sliding door, and it works perfectly. The range is great, and the reported battery life of three years is quite sufficient. If you have ecobee Haven, it'll alert you to anything going on at locations where the SmartSensor is installed. It sounds nice, but unfortunately I was having issues with my system detecting whether I was at home or away, so I didn't get any notifications. We hope this starts working better in the near future for better security.

    Useless without Ecobee Haven

Right off the bat, if you don’t want to spend $5 a month for entry detection, don’t get these entry sensors. You’ll be sorely disappointed with their function without the Ecobee Haven service. The Ecobee entry sensors are exactly what they say they are, sensors that monitor when someone opens or shuts a door or window as well as motion monitoring if placed on a door (doesn’t work on windows). Setup is straight forward, pull a tab on the device, scan a QR code and stick to your door or windows. The magnet has a pretty good range, I don’t think you’ll run into any problems being able to position the sensor and magnet in a way that works. There is even a little green light on the sensor to help you make sure the magnet is detected when you decide where to stick them. I’m a fan of this setup process, Definitely easier than other entry sensors I’ve used. Using the sensors is another story entirely. First off, without Ecobee Haven, ecobee’s home monitoring the only thing you can do with these, is view in the app whether your door is open or not. To be able to get entry alerts or motion alerts, you have to subscribe to Ecobee Haven. I think there are a lot of good features on the Haven service that make it worthwhile; auto arm/disarm, easy app, etc, but for $80 entry sensors to not have a simple push notification alert out of the box is a reason not to get these. If you are up for buying the month service, then you’ll probably like these sensors. They work well for entry sensors. They’ve never dropped connection, nor have they given a false entry detection. The motion detection is pretty sensitive. I have two big dogs and it has picked them up a few times. The auto arm/disarm function (requires subscription) works fairly well too, it works based on your phones location and for the most pet it’ll arm within a few minutes of leaving home and disarm right before you walk through the door. So far I’ve only had one time when it didn’t disarm. The notifications on the phone could be improved too. Rather than pushing a notification saying which door was opened, you just get a notification saying you have an alert and to open the app. I also don’t like that you can’t set the system to automatically signal an alarm on your ecobee camera, switch + or thermostat. Rather you have to manually sound the alarm when you get the notification. Not a great option if you miss the alarm. There also isn’t a professional monitoring option available if you’re looking for that. Overall, I’m not super impressed with these entry sensors, but if you like the ecobee smart camera, thermostat, and aren’t bothered by the monthly fee, these work as part of a fairly google security system that’ll you’ll probably be happy with.

    Untapped potential

The actual hardware is good, it looks clean and is easy to install. The issue is with the software. Basically all these sensors can do is notify you when the doors are opened when the system is armed or turn off the ac if doors or windows are open. To get that basic functionality you need to pay $5 a month. I wouldnt be super opposed to this if it worked well, but it doesnt. Of the four people in my house, only one of them consistently reports whether they are home or away correctly. His phone is andriod and it has no issues. The other three are iphones and two of them work most of the time but can be slow to update, and the other says “limited location access” although they are setup correctly. The last major complaint is that ecobee doesnt pass the sensors along to homekit or other apps. I could work around some of these limitations if i could make automations in homekit or home assistant but at the time of writing its not possible. | TLDR: If everyone has andriod phones in your home and youre willing to pay $5 a month for notifications when doors are opened and nobody is home then buy them. For anyone else I would look into a solution that allows greater flexibility and features for a lower price.

Ok Sensor, Not Very Useful Motion Detection

The smart sensor for doors and windows are your typical magnetic contact sensors that let you know whether a window or door has been opened or closed. The sensing part is a bit on the large side and the main advantage these have over a typical alarm system is the lack of wires and that there's a motion sensor built into the sensing portion. This works with the Ecobee Haven app to give you alerts and can activate alarms (if you have other supported devices with that capability) when a door or window is opened after the system has been "armed". They can also give you alerts as to whether the home is empty or people are home, though that's not very useful when there are multiple adults who each independently enter and exit the house. They look a nice white color which worked well with the one installed on my window. The color was a clash with the one installed by the front door. The oversized pillbox shape didn't help either. I need to determine if there's a paint that's safe to use. Getting a color match would help it fade into the background. While there's a motion sensor on the sensing portion, it does not appear smart enough that Ecobee can give you reliable indications that someone entered or exited the house. Detecting motion after the door has been closed is a good indicator that someone entered (or at least the house is still occupied), but given that people could be inside in another room or a narrow entry way could result in you being outside the view angle when your door closes (especially if it auto latches), I didn't feel the motion sensor added much value beyond being just an additonal motion sensor inside the home to increase coverage for when the system was "armed". My rating here for the door/window sensors ends up being a 3 - they pretty much just do a basic job but limit you to the Ecobee ecosystem and the additional motion sensing feature was not quite as useful or extensible as hoped.

Excellent sensor that works great with app

Ecobee has really perfected the smart home app and these door/window sensors are an outstanding addition. Setup is super easy. The packaging is very nice and the sensors are very cool and high quality. Setup is also very easy as you hit the "plus" icon in the app and select "door/window sensor". You then scan the QR code on the sensor and it finds and registers it to the app. You then place it, with step by step directions, and name it. You can then find the status of the sensor on the home page of the Ecobee smart home app. It shows you the status but with a small delay, like a 5 second delay. It is nice to have the door sensors on the app, as even my Simplisafe sensors require a paid subscription to view this feature online in the app. I think Ecobee has integrated these sensors perfectly and the app has worked without glitches or bugs. Well done!

I have also been adverse to getting a home alarm systems, I always seem to mess them when I go to someones house so I never really thought of getting one, at least not the traditional system. Along with the Ecobee Smart Camera, Room Sensors and these SmartSensors, now I have peace of mind when I leave my home. As witht he others products int he line, setup is simple! Just scan the QR codes on the product labels with the Ecobee app, line them up at the top opening of a door, remove the back of the stick on tape and bam, I now I have sensors on my front door and patio door! I will now know if someone came in when I am gone and there is even a motion center built in if they came in through a window. They are small enough to not stick out too much, and give me the peace of mind I needed for a fantastic price!

Overall these door sensors look good and work as expected, however, I can’t recommend this smart security ecosystem based on the review of the Smart Camera mainly because they charge a subscription for some very basic features, and I will not pay for a 2nd subscription in addition to my subscription for my existing Ring devices.

Once I subscribed to their monitoring system, I discovered the power of their home ecosystem. It adds a sense of comfort knowing when a door has been opened. This system, when combined with a camera, makes it easy to know when movement is taking place. It alerts my smart phone whenever it’s armed and the door has been breached. When combined with my camera, I can also monitor my doorway live. This has a smart mode that will ignore movement when I’m connected to my home WiFi system as well, so I don’t need to remember to turn it on and off. This is a simple, effective and well thought out system.

These are great - Super easy to install and set up and simple to use. Just stick the main piece to a window or door and the magnet fairly close to it on a solid part off the door and by using the app, you can be notified any time that door or window is opened. I already have their camera and these integrate perfectly. You get a one month trial and then it's $5 a month for the monitoring service. A very reasonable price. Highly recommend these to secure your home without having to get an expensive alarm system installed.

The SmartSensor is a must have in addition to the camera, as it monitors the status of your door. I have one placed on the front door, and the second one placed on my bedroom door. They double as a motion sensor as well. A small LED indicator lights up briefly to show that it has detected the contact in the closed state, so it's comforting to know it's still working. In the app, it logs every time a door is opened or closed, and in conjunction with the smart camera, can capture images when not home.

This sensor is quite handy. I have several doors that I like to know if they are open or closed and with this sensor I can easily see if this is the case. Adding them to the app is really easy just scan the QR code and let the app connect it to your camera or thermostat. My one concern is that the battery seems a little bit specialized. I am sure it will last a long time but you might want to look into getting some spares to have on hand.

This is also a good addon to the Ecobee system. However you need to have Ecobee's Haven to utilize them fully. The sensors track if the door or window is open or closed. The nice thing about them is you can get a push notification every time the door or window is opened or closed. The sensors are easily install on the App. After utilizing them for a week I love them. I would recommend to family and friends.

Great Sensors to catch the Cookie Monsters

The Ecobee SmartSensor for doors and windows is a neat little item that I will say now should not be confused with a real security system. I have a security setup for actual safety, these are more of a tracking system and notification setup than anything. You have to pay for the Haven service to utilize everything, which for my, just like the camera, is not something I am willing to do with everything nowadays needing a service charge. They should have a better setup with notifications if you are within your WiFi, I should not need to pay a monthly fee for a simple notification. I am currently using the sensors on the pantry to track the door being open for my kids trying to sneak cookies in the middle of the night. One thing I do not like is the Motion Sensors are not sensitive at all. You have to be within a few feet to get them to activate. If you are willing to pay for the service, then I can see them working to a benefit but once I seen that I had to use the Haven subscription, I gave it a try and cancelled it after a few days, it was not anywhere what I expected. If you want a sensor that you can use for the candy door, this can work but the system needs more options other than paying for phone notifications.
