Some people might be expecting Dark Souls 4, but this game is really a mix of a lot of games. If you're already a fan, I'm sure you've already bought the game. But if you don't know whether you'll like it or not, it's open world, but you will be told very little about where to go. The game wants you to explore on your own and really doesn't care if you miss something compared to other games that have objective markers and collectible markers all over the map. With that said, it's also the most streamlined game for newcomers as well. You can jump. There's a map. The checkpoints may tell you the direction to go. Respec-ing your character is also an easy to do thing in Elden Ring. Back then it was either limited, complicated, or non-existent. So, you're free to make whatever build you want at anytime, or to even fix your stats if you messed up. Personally, I've found the game a lot easier because of these options. The hardest part of the game is really the beginning when you have almost nothing and you actually have to learn bosses more carefully.

Okay, had to make a review because people decided to “review bomb” this here with 2/5 and sometimes 1/5 stars (essentially giving it an ‘F’). Which is kind of ridiculous, as your scoring that is missed the mark so much that From Software didn’t even do its “homework”. MEH. Just because they viewed it as “overhyped” since it didn’t meet whatever subjective standards they created in their heads when the game was in development. Instead, I try to grade a game on what the Designers set out for it to be, not what I wanted it to be. That being said, it isn’t a perfect game. Honestly though, what is “perfect”? From gaming for 26 years, there are so many that come so very close to perfection, but could still use some improvements in one aspect or another. Whether that be, mechanics, music, level design, pacing, “that one boss”, length of the game, replay-ability et al. Being about 20 hours into Elden Ring, fighting multiple bosses and side bosses. It isn’t perfect. While it is the most mechanically consistent game from a gameplay standpoint in the Demon-Dark-Bloodborne Series that From Software has put out. It may fall short in having a gripping (active tense-grabs the players hand) narrative that other games keep players closer to. This series often tells its narrative passively in the background (of the characters/bosses and land that you travel). Also, what happened to that pretty cinematic video? I think many may thought would be part of the intro for this game? Instead, I was greeted with an intro that was with fixed/stills of animation. Not a huge deal, but just seemed oddly skipped and missing. However, does it hit all of the notes that it sets out to meet from it’s predecessors, while also bending the formula to achieve more?! Yes! It absolutely does. This is probably the most “accessible” title and not primarily from a difficulty standpoint but From Software worked on their multiplayer mechanics and laid them out in ways that are more intuitive for newcomers that could use a hand. Not over explaining the game or handholding but letting the players know what resources are available to them and how to access them. While also introducing new mechanics like, Ashes of War. Ashes of War is a way to not only add new layers of fighting techniques (depth) to the combat system, but also in form of summons to aid you in a pinch. Now for one of the gripes I keep hearing about is in regards to graphical stuttering. I am playing the PS5 version predominately in Performance (or FPS) mode which has made for a very steady (what seems to be) locked in 60 FPS. Yes, I wish we had better FPS since I play many games at higher frames, but this feels great still. The Graphics Mode (gets a little choppier in some areas) BUT is it anywhere as bad as Graphics/Resolution modes in Horizon Forbidden West or Dying Light 2? NO! It is not, it is actually very playable and runs smoothly overall (better in closed areas of course). The other games mentioned, it gets so choppy that I almost get nauseated from playing. So, that is my conclusion and incoherent rambling. Thanks for reading through that and hearing out my thoughts in this wild ride of a review, but I hope you considering joining the wild ride that is Elden Ring. Veteran or newcomer alike. I think you have a game series that is unapologetically difficult, but much more accessible for those new to the series as well. It may not meet some peoples unrealistic subjectivity of what they thought it “should be”, but it definitely fulfilled itself in many levels of what From Software team passionately thought it “could be”. 4.8/5 You Are Dead’s (Perfection is an Illusion). A first time Souls-like player, I was cautious but optimistic about this title especially because of the involvement of George RR Martin in the story writing. This game exceeded my expectations repeatedly over hundreds of hours of elegant gameplay, combining the delights of games like Breath of the Wild and Skyrim with horrors reminiscent of The Witcher and Silent Hill. This game has the old school feel of a platformer from the N64 era with the aesthetic of a gothic painting. The steep learning curve of game mechanics yeilds to wonderfully fluid and complex combat and exploration, but requires patience and attention to detail. This is a puzzle game at heart, and while the game's rich online community can make navigating the confusing story arcs and dungeons easier, players will often find themselves wanting to puzzle things out on their own. After all, summoning a cooperative player could bring a recusant to your world, leaving your runes stranded halfway to the next grace!

Easily the best game I've played since the Witcher. Is it hard? Yes. Is it infuriating at times? Yes. Does Melania make you want to scream and throw things? Absolutely. But is it worth it all in the end? You betcha. Truly the best game out right now and its not even close. I beat it on Xbox first but then bought another copy for PS5 to do it all again. You're in for lots of pain but its such a rewarding experience when you take everything out. The story is top notch, the artwork is amazing....just the whole experience is worth it.

Graphics and gameplay are great, love the open world format. Game is difficult but not too difficult. You definitely have to put a little time into leveling your character and weapons. The visual style is top notch with lots of unique characters to kill.

It's been years since I've been this absorbed by a title. I'm an absolute Souls noob and this game is exactly what I needed to scratch that itch for a challenge and a one-of-a-kind experience. Highly suggested to newcomers, but don't expect for it to all really click until you sleep on it after failing miserably in the beginning. Also, don't be afraid to roam on your own time, create your own adventure, and fight minions until you truly understand the cadence of this type of game. I promise, once you invest the time to respect your opponents and gain a few levels, you'll be on top of the world...until you get absolutely humbled by a mid-tier boss that will smash your brains into the ground. A true culmination of the soulsborne series of games. A masterwork from From Software. A high note and a breathe of fresh air to the open world genre. Fun for veterans and novices alike. Though some may consider it diffcult if they are new to the franchise.

Great game if you like souls games but it's not for everyone. Some might prefer Horizon FW which I played to 10% then sold to someone else because the story was lame and the skill tree was stupid. This game is more grown up. No handholding with NPC and inner voices telling you what to do next. There is a story and side quests but you have to hunt for them and figure it out. There are some annoying bugs like changing left hand weapons in a battle and menus getting stuck so it needs another patch. Big map but eazy to navigate. Love the openness, fast travel and the horse is well implemented. So much to explore and figure out. I like it better than Ghost of Tsushima which is beautiful but repetitive and boring. This game is crazy hard like any souls game and you will have to repeat battles over and over but it's keeping me highly entertained.

Fantastic game, not even a Souls fan and this checked all my boxes. Great combat, exploration and a sense of adventure. No hand holding or overly drawn out cutscenes where you put the controller down waiting to play again. Would recommend any enjoyer of games to try it.

Elden Ring is the greatest game of 2022. The SoulsBorne formula in an open world setting with a versatile mount is as spectacular as it sounds. There has never been as much to explore and there has never been so much content in Souls.

So far, i am having a blast. It seem the be easier than the dark souls series but much more exploration. Plays well on my ps5.

I'm not a huge souls like game fan. I'd played and beat Demon's Souls on ps3 back in the day and enjoyed it but hadnt really been interested in souls like games since. Tried Bloodborne and couldn't get into it either. I'd read all the rave reviews about Elden Ring and figured I'd give it a shot after I finally got my hands on a ps5. I'm glad I did because it's the best open world in a game I've ever played. There's so much to explore and find in the game. I honestly have no idea what's going on with the main story and I don't really care. I'm just enjoying exploring the world and uncovering secrets and unlocking equipment. I'm about 60 hours in and level 120 and probably 80% through the game so you definitely gets your money's worth. I'd highly recommend this game to anyone.

Elden Ring is an RPG that features deep systems and an open world that only gets better the longer you play. It starts with basics; you are low level with shabby gear. You can't even level up until you meet someone. You are a nobody. This is your journey to become something more than you were at the start. It's going to be hard, but everything is at first. Keep trying, it gets easier as you get stronger and better equipped. I am having a blast and I am terrible at Souls genre games. Edit: 36 hours in. I have barely opened up a small part of 3 parts of the world's map. I've been playing the game mmo style. Explore, grind experience to level up, try the smaller areas and bosses first. If you put the time into doing those things, it helps tremendously. This is a game that rewards your patience.

It runs very smooth and looks so much more beautiful on the PS5 than any other system I've played it on. 9/10 gameplay, 8/10 graphics, 9/10 OST and 10/10 world design. I love it so much.

A phenomenal game and the pinnacle of Fromsoftwars's game design. A massive open world truly filled with mysteries and secret locations around every corner, that you actually WANT to seek out and you actually enjoy. Many open world games fail at not feeling like a chore, Elden Ring is so fun. The combat is difficult, like Dark Souls. But the open world lets you walk away from challenged and come back when ready. Co-op help is almost always available. The abundance of checkpoints let you get back into the action quick. It's excellent all around. I experienced no performance issues on PS5.

Truly this game is a mixture of Skyrim and Souls alike. You can expect to spend hours away from the "main" questline and shift your focus towards smaller quests, dungeons and overall exploring a truly wonderful open world game. It runs smoothly on any screen, even your cellphone if you're savvy enough. If you haven't played any game from FromSoftware I HIGHLY suggest you do some research and then jump in but if you want to jump without it then be warned as this game will NOT hold your hand. Also expect to die a few times but that should go without saying.

This game is by far the one of if not the best game I have ever played. The extensive open world is really alive and teeming with enemies, secrets, and loot that seems like an endless treasure chest of discovery and fun. I have 100+ hours in the game and it still greatly surprises me. I hadn't played a souls-borne game except for a little bit of Bloodborne but FromSoftware really made a game that was inviting and adaptable for newcomers. The challenge of the game only makes the grind and the success that much more satisfying and fun. If you love awesome monsters, great combat, great graphics, a vast open-world where you can guide your own story, crazy lore and magic this is a must buy.

What more can be said about this masterpiece that hasn't already been. We finally got an open world Souls game and it is one of the best FromSoftware has made. This is one of the best games ever made and there is a reason it won 2022 game of the year. I have put in hundreds of hours into this game and I am still not finished with it yet. I highly recommend this gem!

What can be said that hasn't already? It's Dark Souls gone open world, and it works incredibly well. Mostly. There are some boss fights that could have used more work (Misbegotten Warrior and Crucible Knight, I'm looking at you), but other than that and a couple bugs I encountered it's been an amazing experience. I'm so glad there are open world games like this and Breath of the Wild that give you a real sense of adventure and discovery, and don't treat you like an infant with a GPS every step of the way. Buy without hesitation.
