I live in an apartment with hard floors throughout. I bought this vacuum last night to replace a similar item of another brand that quit working on me. So far, so good! This vacuum does a very good job of picking up dust, debris, and hair. I don't have pets in my apartment, but it's surprising how much of my own long fine hair ends up on the floor. During my first use of this appliance, I picked up quite a lot of hair, and a fair amount of it did wrap around the roller. In fact, enough hair was picked up during this initial use to create a "red light" incident. If the unit stops working and flashes a red light, this is an indication to clean out the unit. The self-cleaning feature did manage to clear quite a lot of it from the roller, but not all of it. It was still necessary to remove the roller from the unit and clean some of the hair off myself. I will say, though, that this was very easy to do compared to previous experiences of having to do this with other vacuums. The first step of doing this, of course, is to remove the power source. In this case, that means detaching the handheld portion of the unit. After releasing a couple of clips on the underside of the vacuum's head, the brush roller slipped right out. Some of the hair had gotten back in where the end of the roller is retained; removing the roller would have been the only way to clear that bit. Other of the hair had wrapped around the middle of the roller, and this had to be cut off. Since the automatic feature had already cut off most of it, this turned out to be no big deal. Reinstalling the brush roller was just as easy. Be sure to slide the clips back into place. This does not happen automatically. As for dumping the cup, this proved to be a little more complicated than it was with the other brand I had previously. This is what I deducted a star for. Even so, it wasn't a terrible ordeal. The vacuum has two filters in it: the screen for larger debris, and another filter for the finer particulate matter. The brush on the attachment can be used to gently remove that layer of dust on the filters when dumping the cup. There is also an interesting little spring-loaded thing to pull that helps to dislodge some of the finer dust from the inner filter. Generally, though, using this vacuum is a pleasant experience. While I definitely have avoidance issues with big heavy vacuums to the extent that I simply won't use them, this vacuum is actually kind of fun to use. And it's definitely nice to have well-swept floors.
