The Elgato full HD Facecam has upgraded my gaming streaming sessions to a whole new level from where I was before. I was using a regular HD webcam from another brand that works well in good lighting situations, but when the light is not perfect, it looked pretty bad. I don’t always have the right lights set up and this Elgato Facecam has a Sony Starvus CMOS sensor that is great in low light conditions and the noise in the shot is minimal and I am very impressed with it. I don’t always think of my lighting and this helps with one less thing to worry about. This camera will shoot full HD at up to 60 fps, but you can step that down to 30 fps if you like and there are also 780 and 540 resolutions that you can set to 60 or 30 fps as well. The Camera Hub application is where you can make all of your adjustments. You can set your Zoom/FOV, contrast, saturation, sharpness, white balance and noise reduction. Thera are also settings for exposure and setting the shutter speed. All these settings can be saved to the camera itself and that will allow you to bring it with you and use it on another PC for a quick and easy set up elsewhere. The camera is also compatible with a wide array of video chatting/meeting software such as Micro$oft Teams, skype, Zoom, FactTime, Google Meet, OBS, and SLOBS. I was able to test with Zoom, Teams and Skype and had no issues and each time the person on the other side was impressed with my video resolution and clarity. One thing I should point out, is that this does not have a built-in microphone. They have focused purely on a great video capturing device and I think they did a great job of that. Still, it would have been nice to have a build in microphone but for me it was not a deal breaker. Pros: Quality Low-Light performance Ease of set up On board settings Physical lens cover Cons: Price no microphone

    Streaming Camera at its Best!

--- SETUP --- The camera already comes attached to its own laptop/monitor stand. It can be unscrewed to be used with a tripod if preferred. Simply attach the USB-C cable to the camera and the USB-3 end to your computer and you’re good to go. No software is required for use, but it is recommended for customization. --- FEATURES --- Studio quality f/2.4 24 mm all-glass Elgato Prime Lens, Sony® STARVIS™ Sensor optimized for indoor use, true FHD 1080p resolution at sixty frames per second, advanced image engine processes maximum data at high speed, uncompressed video without artifacts, up to 82 degree field of view for full frame or wide angle, fixed focus range keeps you in focus, USB 3.0 interface transfers image data with lowest latency, set brightness, exposure, and more in the app, save settings directly to the camera --- PERFORMANCE --- When it comes to gaming and streaming, Elgato brand has always stood above the rest. Naturally, when this camera became available, I needed to try it out. This camera is an improvement over my previous streaming camera. I tested both cameras side by side using Streamlabs OBS (SLOBS). Without making any changes in the settings, the Elgato camera showed me an image that I preferred vs. my previous streaming camera. Colors look natural, and there is a clear difference in the shades of black. For example, with my previous camera, my beard looks all black, whereas with the Elgato camera, you can clearly see that I do have gray hair. When playing in the dark, the Elgato camera can pick up more light from the room making my face look a bit more clear. This is perfect for scary games where my viewers expect me to be playing with the lights off while still being able to see my face reactions during frightening events. Enough can’t be said for having a 60 FPS facecam. Similar results can be achieved with more expensive cameras, but for the price that Elgato comes at, this is just right for gaming. Your video game already offers you a smooth experience (if you’re gaming at 60 FPS+), so why shouldn’t your facecam do so as well. --- EXPECTATIONS --- This facecam is definitely bigger than I expected, but to me, that isn’t a big deal because I use my facecams on tripods. I set it up on my steaming laptop to test it out, though, and it didn’t get in the way of my gaming. I like the detachable cable, as it makes storing much easier. Though the camera is plug and play, I recommend you download the Elgato Facecam drivers and software for more customization. Out of the box without downloading software, I was able to use it with SLOBS without any issues. It also works when streaming to YouTube, Facebook, and Zoom (I didn’t test Twitch). When I used it in Zoom for a work meeting, my co-workers made a point to ask me what I was using for a camera because they could tell the difference in quality vs. what they were using. I also didn’t look like I was in the witness protection program. One thing I feel would improve this camera is the privacy lid. This is probably my 7th streaming camera and all of those except for one had privacy lids that attached to the camera itself. This is important because most gamer desk areas are cluttered with controllers, cables, and other peripherals. Having the lid be removable without a way to hang or clip to the camera itself will make it easier to get misplaced. --- VALUE --- For the price, you get an excellent streaming camera that can show you to your viewers in full 1080P at 60 FPS for one smooth facecam experience. --- APPROVAL --- If you’ve had a camera for a while and have been looking for an upgrade, this is definitely an upgrade. If you are just starting to dip your toes into streaming while gaming, this camera is probably going to future-proof your streams for a good amount of years. As a gamer, this is my new go-to for my future gaming streams.

The ONE Webcam to Rule Them All

It's about time that Elgato came out with a proper webcam. Being in the entertainment & tech industry over the years, I've had to use several webcams in this price range. None have performed as well as the Elgato Facecam. Upon immediately taking this out of the box, I was surprised at the massive lens affixed to the front of the camera as compared to previous webcams I've used. Streaming and recording with the Facecam over the last few days, I have been very impressed particularly by the image quality, accurate skin tone depiction, accurate color reproduction, smooth 60 fps, and the truly amazing camerahub software that Elgato has created for this webcam. I love the wide angle 83.2 degree view of this camera! I was missing out. I didn't realize how much more environment it allows me to capture. This is a fixed focus camera with about a 12 inch focus distance (no auto focus) which allows the entire field of view to be in focus. I personally prefer this over having to manually zoom or deal with auto focus issues on auto focus webcams. However, the drawback to fixed focus is that if you want to zoom to a smaller field of view, the image is going to be digitally enlarged which won't look too good at 1080p (anything over 1.5x and it starts to get messy). This is something I rarely ever do so it's not an issue for me. I also noticed that the background of my environment was also constantly in focus which is something I rarely get when using webcams with auto focus (background usually blurs). This is a huge key feature that I've loved about this cam. In my opinion, the Elgato camerahub software is also what really separates this webcam from it's competition. It already has great default settings out of the box, but depending on your lighting and setup, their software gives you some granularity that you won't get with other webcams. I love that Elgato setup a proper shutter speed and ISO section when in manual mode. This allowed me to adjust the shutter speed depending on how much light I already had coming into my environment. Why is this important? This both affects your frame rate and how much light the camera will let in. The lower the shutter speed, the more light is let in. Conversely, the higher the shutter speed, the smoother your frame rate (1/64 or faster guarantees smooth 60 fps video). This is something I've never been able to adjust on other webcams. Usually I was stuck with just adjusting gain or brightness sliders. When streaming, I did notice that while the automatic exposure setting is great on this webcam, setting the exposure to manual with a shutter speed of 1/125s resulted in a slightly smoother 60fps experience without any type of ghosting or motion blur. The Camerahub software also gives you a ton of other adjustments like Zoom/FOV, contrast, saturation, sharpness, metering, white balance, noise reducton, and anti-flicker. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Below, I've compiled my favorite highlights of this webcam and why I think it's the best webcam for streaming/content creation in this price range. I've also listed a couple of minor cons. +Video transmitted is YUV uncompressed which means it has no compression artifacts, it's low latency, and it uses minimal cpu resources +Accurate skin tone depiction and great color reproduction + Flawless focus when streaming; background remains focused +True smooth 60fps +The granularity I got with the Camerahub software is something I didn't get with other webcams (love the manual shutter and ISO settings!) +You can remove the camera from the included mount and install it on a universal tripod mount; camera can tilt and swivel +Includes detachable 6.5ft USB-C Cable; the fact it's detachable allows you to use even longer USB-C cables if your particular setup demands it +Built in flash memory to save settings directly to the camera!! +Default out of the box settings produce a great image Minor Gripes: -Was not too impressed with white balance. There is a slider for color temperature but no slider for tint. While the auto white balance does perform well overall, it would have been nice to be able to adjust the color tint. -No multi app support currently (camera can only be accessed by one program at a time) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Overall, I am extremely impressed and satisfied with the Elgato facecam for streaming and fixed focus content creation (such as using it as a product unboxing cam). It's the best webcam I've used to date. For the streamer or content creator that prioritizes ease of use, convenience, and value, these are some of the best results you can expect out of a webcam.

Adding high quality video to your streams and meetings doesn’t get easier. The Elgato Facecam is a higher end webcam with sharp optics, outstanding video processing, and plug-and-play simplicity. Simply install the Camera Hub app, plug in the camera, and you’re pretty much good to go. The app itself is pretty straightforward as well, with options for changing field of view, picture quality, exposure, noise reduction, and so forth. All the adjustments happen quickly with a live preview window so you can see exactly how your changes affect the image, but honestly, I didn’t need to mess with any of it. The picture quality was excellent right out of the box and I’m astounded at how well it works with poor and low lighting. I have 2 LED light stands that I usually have to use for a good image, but I don’t need to use them at all with the Facecam. The automatic exposure and video adjustments are quick, seamless, and really help ensure you don’t miss an important moment. Outside of being ultra simple to set up, I think my favorite feature of the camera is the lens. Elgato makes a big deal out of the optical sharpness, which is solid, but what I love is that it doesn’t round out faces or alter proportions. Meaning, the camera doesn’t seem to add that infamous 20lbs and I greatly appreciate that. Some people might scoff that it’s not 4k, but that’s not a level of ultra detail that I want zoomed in on my face. 1080p is just the right level of sharpness, is crisp, bright, and very smooth at 1080p60. The Facecam includes a fold out clasp to mount it on top of a monitor, but the body also has a standard size camera thread, so it can be mounted on any regular tripod, ball head, slider, etc… for a flexible range of mounting options. From Zoom meetings to Twitch, it seems like being on camera is more inevitable by the day, so it’s good to have one that’s flattering. If you’re looking for an easy upgrade to your live streaming experience, I highly suggest the Elgato Facecam. It puts out outstanding quality video right out of the box, makes seamless automatic adjustments, and is very simple to set up. Great job Elgato!

I have been looking for a new web cam for some time, as mine was way past its time (way, way past), and given the last nearly two years, well, we have all needed them. I had been using it with a Sony mirrorless, and while it has been a decent setup, the webcam quality was subpar, and it became a pain to keep taking my Sony out of the loop when I wanted to use it for other things. I have some familiarity with other Elgato products, and given my experiences with them, and their name, I was pretty excited to give this a try. In short, I have been very pleased so far. To start, I like the look of it. Blocky, black, plain…and a bit big. Perfect for me. All personal preference, but I think it will fit in with any setup. Also, I like the design and build. Feels well-built. Plastic, but solid, and a good weight. Perhaps kind of light, but with that, there is no fear of the camera slipping down and changing the shot angle. Beyond that, the camera connects via an included detachable USB-C (to A) cable, that is both a good length and feels sturdy. They have also designed some vents in the back to help with heating. Something that I had never even considered. Lastly, they give you a lens cap for privacy when the cam is not in use. It is very easy to get placed and ready for use. There is the “standard” type of monitor mount that you can clip to your monitor, but it also comes equipped with a detachable mount with a ¼ metal thread that can easily be used with a tripod, other mounts or with a slew of other Elgato arms, mounts, or products. I just have it clipped to my monitor for the time being, but I absolutely am going to unify my setup and get everything on one arm. That said, using the standard monitor mount, you get some nice up/down movement, and can get some left/right as well. Now, for the camera itself. I was pretty interested in this cam, because of the company behind it, and because it seemed a bit different. All of my cams in the past used autofocus, which, while they worked, quite frankly, suffered from that thing where they kept going in and out of focus, searching for, well, focus. It has been annoying, but it is just one of those things you get used to and accept. This camera, however, uses a fixed, prime lens. Basically, if you are roughly 1 to 3 feet from the cam, everything is just in focus. I love this. You do lose the ability to get fine details when you go inside of that foot, but for me, I will take great overall focus over that any day. As for the picture quality, it is, in short, fantastic. There is a nice, wide field of view, and the picture is very crisp. It tops out at 1080p 60 fps (and is uncompressed, so best to use USB 3), but for me, that is all that is needed, especially when it looks as good as it does. Further, it is not just the clarity, but the smoothness of the video. The combination really makes a difference. Obviously, with better lighting, you will see better results, but in poor, decent, and good lighting, I am impressed with what I see. Sure, with the poor lighting, it is not ”great,“ but it surely is better than I was expecting. Now, this is “out of the box.” As good as I find the camera to be, I think the software offered is just as important to the overall package here. You get a really nice level of control over the video output. There are a number of auto settings, but you also get manual control of exposure, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, noise reduction…etc.. I was really able to improve the video by investing some time. Further, you can save these settings to the device, so it is not something that needs to be done multiple times. This is a very nice add on. I would maybe like to see some more manual controls added, I really wish they offered some fun effects type things (blurred or fun backgrounds), and I hope they continue to update and improve the package, but as is, the software is absolutely worth exploring. I am using this as a second cam for streaming, and also as my main from time to time, but it has to be pointed out that there is no microphone included. This is really my only real “dig” on this camera, and quite honestly, I am torn. They are assuming anyone buying it already has a separate mic set up, and they are probably right; further, most included mics are not good anyway… but I just can’t shake the feeling that they still should have added one. Just something to note. Ultimately, I really like this cam. Most importantly, it delivers great video, but there is just a nice mix of quality, ease of use, versatility, cost, and value that I think is hard to pass up. Look at your own use case, but I think this would work for quite a few people.

    The Best Webcam for Gamers

Elgato continues to dominate in the streaming gear world, with their already excellent capture cards, which I use frequently during streams. It was only a matter of time before they launched a camera and it doesn’t disappoint. In the box you’ll find the webcam, with an attached monitor stand, a USB C to A cable for connecting the camera to your PC, a safety manual, and a quick start guide. The Facecam is plug and play, and doesn’t require any advanced installation, as Windows detects it immediately for use. The camera is compatible with most, if not all, use cases when needing a webcam, and thus far has worked on Discord, OBS, Teams, and Zoom during my use. The included stand is easily removed from the ¼ inch thread on the bottom, and the camera can be reinstalled on most third-party camera stands or tripods with a standard thread mount. For the size of the camera, it’s surprisingly light while not feeling cheap. While the external housing is made of plastic, the build quality is as expected for a device from Elgato. The lens is quite large, and the lens cap is easily removed and reinstalled, but keep in mind that it doesn’t stay tethered on the camera. The only downside is the risk of misplacing the lens cap, and I wish there was a way to keep the cap with the camera. Picture quality is surprisingly great, with some graininess seen, but detail is much clearer when compared to other more popular options as this benefits from a Sony sensor, with up to 1080P at 60 FPS captured. The only camera that was able to best the Facecam picture was a DSLR that I used previously, using a Camlink, which has replaceable lenses, but maxes at 30 FPS. Unlike my DSLR, this doesn’t suffer from overheating after an hour of use, and didn’t ever feel hot to the touch after a long session. The viewing angle is more than sufficient to capture you as you play games and stream on OBS (approx. 82 degree view). As I stated before, this is a plug and play camera and will work even if you don’t install the Camera Hub software available from Elgato. However, with the app you’re able to adjust the field of view up to “83.2” degrees, the contrast, saturation, sharpness, exposure and white balance. The app even has a “Noise Reduction” option, which makes the picture appear a bit more like a smooth like filter you’d find on any popular camera app. You can also set the resolution in the app from a low of 540p up to 1080p 30/60. Low light tends to be the killer for most webcams, making it difficult, at times, to set up a chroma (green-screen) appropriately. The facecam seems to be able to work well with lower light, although you may notice some noise in the picture. Setting up with a proper key light or making sure your room is properly lit will alleviate this during use, but can be tweaked within OBS or the Camera Hub app. There also isn’t any mic included on the Facecam, so keep that in mind if you’re not using this for game streams and don’t already have an external microphone. This is likely because most gamers tend to have a headset or external mic during streams; offering a much better sound capture. Elgato also makes a really great microphone, if you'd like an all Elgato experience. Overall, Elgato knocked it out of the park with this camera. It’s easily the best streaming webcam I’ve ever used, and this one made it easy to disconnect my DSLR for a better streaming experience. The Camera Hub app isn’t required to use the camera, but makes small picture tweaks possible if your conference software lacks picture quality settings. While this is priced a bit higher than most generally available webcams, the quality of the picture and ease of use make this an easy recommendation to fellow gamers and content creators, or those looking for a better webcam.

Quick and easy to setup. Like most web cams, your lighting greatly influences how your video looks, but with good lighting this works well for both work video calls and for streaming/gaming. The mount is sturdy and easily attaches to top of monitor, stands on its own on your desk, or you can use the camera mount to mount to a clamp or tripod. It has a cap to block the camera lens when not in use. It just snaps on/off – I would have preferred one that was attached that either flipped up or slid out of the way, but it works fine. There’s a blue “camera on” light to let you know when you’re on air. Note that its 1080p resolution (not a 4k cam), but it looks good for streaming and video calls, plus uses a lot less bandwidth at that resolution. It was a bit grainy in low light at 1080p 60 fps, but 1080p 30 fps looked fine in lower light. With good lighting all the options looked good. There’s a number of things you can set in the camera hub software to adjust your image: Zoom, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness, Exposure, White Balance, Noise reduction and then 540p-1080P at either 60 or 30 fps. USB C connector cable is a decent length and seems sturdy. One other item to note – there’s no onboard microphone, just FYI that you’ll need a separate headset/desktop mic for recording audio.

I use this Elgato for daily live gaming streaming. General performance is good but not great. I initially had some latency hiccups that took a moderate amount of troubleshooting to resolve. I knew the system wasn’t to blame because all hardware is top end gaming components boosted even more for streaming in HD. I knew they software wasn’t solely to blame because I use one of the better OBS builds and it works fine with another brand streaming camera with zero issues and no latency. I know internet wasn't the issue because it's a cat-6 hard-wired gigabit connection typically seeing speeds of over 900Mbps/800Mbps. After a few software tweaks and reboots, the latency stopped and quality is pretty good for 2-3 hours of daily continuous streaming with gaming screen sharing active. Autofocus is fast enough to keep up, color s are rendered well and white balance also good. I use a third-party OBS streaming app, but the Elgato does ship with it’s Stream Deck streaming app with OBS integration. The streaming app is good for new users or those who don’t already have an app. Another included app is the camera management app for fine-tuning camera settings. The camera management app has good basic adjustments but lacks the more granular control I prefer. I included screen shots of both interfaces below. The build is solid with good dust protection from the screen overlaps. The lens dust cover is awkwardly designed and annoying to install and remove. The clamp keeps the camera securely fastened to my monitor and the USB-C to A cable is long enough to reach the PC without stretching or tension. The Elgato isn’t the best streaming camera I’ve used but it’s a good quality cam. It’s not the greatest in dim light while in auto-mode which was a bit of a surprise. Exposure can be adjusted Ito compensate n the camera management app’s manual mode. I figured low light exposure would be better with the “prime” lens but it’s marginally better than decent quality webcams in general. Overall, not a bad camera but just a bit disappointing. Especially compared to our previous cam which was cheaper but almost identical in performance and less prone to performance issues. Nothing ruins a great stream more than laggy video.
