I see a lot of people leaving bad reviews. I own cheap and expensive SD cards. Using the cheap SD card, the capture card wont work properly. Im sure a lot of the users that bought this thought they can use it and record. You NEED a high end card in order for it to work properly and record good quality videos. I have a laptop, and I also use OBS to stream. Your laptop wont be working hard because the capture card with do all the encoding if you set it up correctly. I have used elgato products since they came out with the Game Capture HD. Learn to follow the instructions.

I bought this from bestbuy last week expecting to setup this up quickly and start gaming in standalone mode but I spent 4 hours messing with it and nothing. Everything seems to be plugged in correctly. I've tried restarting and using different HDMI cables. The HDMI cables on my GPU and monitor do indeed work. Can someone please help this is really disappointing. I am in contact with Elgato support about this issue. I've attached a drawing of the setup.

*Note: I do not livestream, all opinions on this review are based on how this product acts as a standalone capture card without a microphone plugged in* _____ As a no-fuss way of capturing game footage this machine is pretty great but it has some flaws. If I had to give the Elgato 4K60 S+ an overall rating it'd be about a 7/10. _____ Positives: +One of the best things about the 4K60 S+ is that you don't need a PC in order to capture any footage, so if (like me) your computer is far away from your game consoles you can still capture to your heart's content +From all of my capture tests that I've done (merely from running a system into the HDMI input then running the HDMI output directly to my TV) I can safely say that I've felt no added input lag/latency when using this +You can customize some settings in a text file that's created after first booting up the 4K60 S+ with an SD Card inserted—among the settings you can change are those of recording in either MKV or MP4 video formats, encoding your video in either the standard H.264 or the new and more efficient HEVC codec, setting up the bitrates for 720p/1080p/4K captures, choosing what source you want to capture audio from, and more (note that not all video editing software support MKV files or HEVC codecs, so for the widest compatibility stick to MP4 encoded with H.264) +The LEDs in front of the machine let you easily know whether or not you are recording or not, so there's generally never gonna be confusion on that end +For the most part, this seems like a sturdy product—build quality on the unit itself is nice and all of the included cables feel great too _____ Negatives: -In all of my recordings, audio levels have been far lower than I'd like them to be -Because you are given a choice of the overall bitrate of your files rather than for separate ones in audio and video, there are no options for choosing the audio bitrate of your captures and since the 4K60 S+ prioritizes the video side of things this means that means that audio botrates are pretty low (at least from my experience, at around 170kbps) -black levels on video captures are pretty bad from my experience, so the blackest part of my recordings generally tend to look more like a somewhat dark gray -brightness and color contrast on video recordings is sometimes good and sometimes bad but that seems to be sonething that happens entirely at random -this is a very minor gripe, but I would have preferred that the recording button be a true press-button rather than just a touch capacitive one—while this hasn't caused me any issues yet, it might do so in the future because touch capacitive buttons tend to get finicky over time. _____ Some of my issues with this capture card can be fixed via careful video editing, but others can't. This is my first experience with a capture card of my own, and assuming that it's capable of firmware updates I'd like to see some of these issues addressed in the future. As it stands, it's a solid piece of hardware, but even with the drawbacks set aside I think that it'd be a better product if it wasn't as expensive.

Fantastic recorder. Reminds me of a VCR . Records your source without issues. It great that I can control the bitrate of the video file. This makes it better as I can control the file size. I bought this to record from my video switcher, which has 4 inputs and two outs . The switcher sends 720p and 1080p all which the 4k60 handles well. No artifacts in the video or problems with audio. I started out with short files to get the hang of the 4k60. At first I was discouraged about it because my video was choppy and slow. After a day of research and testing I found out that my computer was just too old to edit or watch it. Then I transferred the files to my IPhone 7 and viola everything ran smooth. Even used iMovie to edit a 15 minute gaming sequence down to 5 minutes. No issues at all .the resolution was 1080p and even rendered the video in iMovie at 1080p in 7 -11 minutes. Simply one of the best 4K HD video recorders out there. Only thing is that as high tech as this device is there is no way to get STandard definition for direct to Dvd but that’s not what it was intended. I’ve just received a 720x480 recorder. Now I run the 4k60 to that box to get my SD quality recording while recording 1080p . Well worth the money. 40 years ago vcrs where 300-400 bucks 20 years ago DVD recorders were 300 -400 even now dvd recorders are still pricey. This has so much value to it that I think it should be in everyone’s home. Anything with a hDmi cable can connect to this so it’s not just for video gaming. Cameras , computers ,iPhone adapter can be used with this . It’s ultra portable, reliable, and durable. I would recommend it to anyone who is visually artistic , likes to record movies and watch them later without internet connection. If you’ve gotten this far in the review , just buy it already. You won’t regret it. Just make sure you got computers that can run the video footage otherwise you will think you got robbed. It works as intended

Lacking key settings in the capture software

I've been using the HD60 S for a very long time and have been very happy with it. When a colleague recently had an immediate need for a capture device, I sent him my HD60 S and took it as an opportunity to upgrade my setup to the 4K60S+ as a future-proof strategy. Seemed like a win-win to me. Wrong! Setup of the 4K60 S+ was simple enough. All necessary cables, etc. were included. I was planning to use the Elgato 4K Capture Utility, so didn't really have a need for an SD card. Once the software was installed and the device connected, I set out to grab a couple of test captures. The UI of the utility is a huge departure from the older Game Capture software, but was intuitive enough to sort out quickly. Following my first capture is whet led me to the 3-star review. When I watched the captured video back, the source audio was very loud and the mic audio was very low. Easy enough, I thought. Nothing a couple of quick adjustments won't take care of. The mic volume was nearly maxed already, so I went ahead and bumped it up the '100' from the previous '90' setting. Then I looked for the setting to lower the source volume. Then I searched some more. Then I searched for a solution online. Nothing! Turns out the very basic setting of being able to adjust the volume of the source material does not exist. I called the Elgato support # (the online support bot was useless for this issue). The representative was nice enough, but concluded that this setting simply does not exist. That certainly seems like a key feature and a necessity as part of a minimum feature set, but apparently the product team at Elgato did not agree. The rep filed a feature request and recommended I use OBS. So, now I'm off to download and install OBS.

Bought this to have a standalone solution to capture my gameplay for my consoles as well as a side feed for video where I could just record an audio track on my pc and just record the video from pc gameplay. The build is solid, feels like good quality parts. The record button is a little bit janky, it doesn't have a tactile feel, it's hard to tell if you pushed it correctly. Gets a little tricky with finding the correct SD card, ensure you get that ahead of time and get the correct type if you pursue this product. The main problem I had was I ran into where it did not capture audio through HDMI. I checked all my cords, tried multiple displays including my LG tv, 2 different computer monitors, tweaked the settings file by testing out capturing hdmi/line in. Nothing quite did it for me, I exhausted standard ts and reached out to Corsair (Elgato) and they requested some advance log capturing process which was just a little too much for me. I opted to return the product ultimately, but maybe I just had a defective model. There was no info online on my issue and I haven't seen others with it. If it would have worked as intended I think it would have been great, but just seemed unreliable and there's not enough FAQs or ways to troubleshoot issues like this, and the fact it didn't work simply out of the box was frustrating to me. I'm looking forward to their similar products in the future but this ones a pass for me after my experience.

This item currently doesnt have 4k software for the iMac. Its released a little before its time I suppose. Its still usable if you have bootcamp on the iMac. Also there is no off button so kind of annoying to have it on at all times while its plugged in. Never the less Elgato makes top of the line items.

I ordered a new yeti mic, boom arm, all kinds of cables, and SD cards and Card reader dongles, like $700 worth of stuff, it all gets here except for the El Gato piece. I'm dying with excitement when it arrives. I run to the store, pick it up, plug it all up. DEAD. I get a brief flash of a single light, then nothing. I try various different HDMI cables, I turn off HDCP on my PS5, I check the formatting on the SD card, I try both USB cables, restart the PS5 a bunch of times, everything. Same result. Nothing. You go the support page and they have only basic help (turn off HDCP). I thought the people saying they got a defective unit were just one-offs, but this thing just does not work. For $400 bucks I expect to plug it in and start recording. Not spending 2 hours of trying every HDMI and USB cable, different inputs on the TV, PS4 and PS5. Do not take your chances, unfortunately you'll have to find an alternative solution to recording game play from your console and making your own YouTube channel. I'd give this thing 0 stars if I could.

Despite the reviews I thought I would give a try. Where to start... The colors using the SD card were inconsistent. It would be severally over saturated and then later in the video look completely fine. What is the worse is recording from a PC the same scenes were perfectly fine. But that defeats the purpose of a stand-alone device if I need to use a PC to get the colors. Next the device is picky about frame rate. It is advertised as 60p and below. What they don’t say is that it doesn’t support 24p. Last I checked. 24p is below 60p but I guess the manufacturer thought it wasn’t mentioning. It can do 25p... The bundled software is very buggy and lacking a lot of features. The settings that look to be changeable are not. I ended up returning it because it had just too many issues for the price. At that price point I expect it to the perfect, Based on what you get I wouldn’t pay more than $100

HDMI passthrough didn't work. Couldn't get a signal after multiple troubleshooting solutions on multiple monitors/tvs. Definitely not worth the money.
