Clear printing, wastes paper and ink

So we were excited using this Epson ET-3830 as it comes with 1 year free ink. We soon realized that we would need a refill sooner than expected. Pros: This printer is a little more compact than other printers we have had. It leaves a smaller area foot print and is lighter than others. The paper feed tray is directly underneath and you don’t need to feed it from a back tray, thus preventing jams. I like also that the feeder tray for a completed print is the size of a normal 8.5x11 paper and can be adjusted forward. Connecting it to my home wifi was such a breeze, probably the easiest of any printer as I can input my information via the app on my smart phone and not have to use the small display on the printer. The print quality is really clear and smooth, especially for a ink-jet printer. Setting it up and connecting it using the Epson app was an enjoyable experience because it sets up like a text message feed. And that’s where things got frustrating… Cons: Set up again was a breeze…but it took over 10 minutes because there was so many steps to do. This was the first time I’ve used an Epson printer that required me to fill the ink cartridges once I open it from the box. Each of the four color cartridges comes with a bottle of ink that you physically have to fill (which takes approx 75 seconds to fill). The ink fill was not the worst or it. Printing out the adjustment pages was what was very annoying. I printed up 5 pages of comparisons that you need to judge in order to adjust and calibrate, almost like going to the Optometrist (1 or 2, 3 or 4, etc). All of this calibration could’ve been concentrated on less pages. Another frustrating point, was I did not use that much ink on this calibration set up, and already the ink levels dropped 20%! I had left over ink in the bottles and ended up using all of them and it still did not fill the cartridges all the way! I’m afraid to see how much is used on a daily/weekly basis with printing. I see now that the 1-year free would come in handy. Overall, I was very disappointed with this Epson ET-3830 for the reasons of wasting paper in initial set up and the ink usage for just a small amount of printing.

Great printer, major ink savings with Ecotank

We have had Epson printers for many years. It is compact and the print quality is great. Best of all the Ecotank ink system saves a ton of money. You get many more pages and the old cartridges use the ink faster and is much more expensive.

Great printer for home use. Double-sided printing makes saving paper a breeze during large prints. Scanner is quick. Printing via wifi means I can have more desk space by putting the printer on a shelf. All in all, does what you need without much extra work. Ink is easy to fill up, and set up was smooth.

This is my first tank type printer so wasn't sure how it would be, we've had an Epson printer with cartridges for 15 years and was very happy with it so we purchased this one, it was easy to set up and prints well.

A replacement for a 10+ old Cannon inkjet....so far the Epson is working great. It is hardwired to my network via Ethernet so there is no wireless dropouts that other people have complained about...set up was a breeze. I do wish it had a touchscreen...but oh well not a deal breaker. It is noisy compared to my old printer...my wife can hear it print from the other end of the house...

    Great Printer, Less Great Scanner

The printer works great. I'm happy with the quality and speed. The front tray is the only media loading option. Printers I've had in the past have also had a rear tray so that you can load envelopes or photo paper without having to remove plain paper from the main tray, but that isn't an option with this printer. My biggest gripe is that the scanner is very slow. Additionally, the scanning software is not very intuitive, and needs some adjusting from default settings in order to get good scan quality.

    Ditching cartridges is a lifesaver

This is my first non-cartridge printer and it is an absolute lifesaver. My previous printer was an Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 that's about five years old – basically the earlier version of the WF-3820 that's going for $100 – and has most of the same features as this plus a one sided, 35-page automatic document feeder (ADF) for scanning multi-page documents. (The equivalent eco-tank version is the ET-3850). It served as a pretty good printer over its life, but the cartridges were just ridiculously expensive and occasionally didn't work when I put them in the printer. As the old saying goes, the printer companies don't get your money with the printer itself… They get you with the ink cartridges. Along comes the EcoTank which, as Shaq says, gets rid of your cartridge conniptions. Just to compare the cost of ink, an XL black cartridge for my workforce printer cost $40 and could print around 1100 pages (according to the cartridge description), and that's if it worked in the printer. With this beauty, a 127 mL standard bottle of ink costs $20 and can print around 3000 pages (according to the Best Buy Q&A). Meanwhile, the color cartridges are $39 for a pack and do about 300 pages, but the ink refill for this is $42 and does 10,000-14,000 pages (according to Best Buy Q&A)! The convenience, reliability, and cost of ink makes this printer worthwhile vs. purchasing a cartridge version over the course of its life if you do any significant amount of printing… And if you don't do that much printing but put a price on convenience (and maybe sustainability), this could well be worth your money. As for purchasing this vs. other EcoTank models, it really depends on how much you value having a paper tray vs. a paper feeder at the top-back, if you want the ADF or not, and how much room you're willing for your printer to take up. This also has button controls compared to the touch-screen on the ET-4850, if you want to make that jump, but the buttons work just fine (the 4850 also has fax capability, which most people don't need these days). I thought this did well to meet my needs – though I'm kind of on the fence as to whether buying the 3850 and having the ADF would've been worth the extra $20 and dealing with the extra bulkiness – and would definitely buy it again and recommend this, or really any of the EcoTank models, to other people looking for a new printer.

I was surprised how easy the setup was. It somehow connects to your WiFi network through the software when you install it to your computer so there’s no weird technical requirements when trying to set it up for printing. It just auto installs and then it’s just there to select moving forward wirelessly so that is really nice. I think for the price it is good for what you get. Obviously if you spend more money you’ll get a higher quality and higher print speed. I was printing about 18 pages 2 sided(which is nice there’s no paper reloading when doing this) but it takes about 10 mins or so to do that so it’s not super fast, but the quality is pretty good. I was using it to print study guides for an open book test I had to take and I was printing literally up to hour before I had to take the test and it did work flawlessly in that final hour so that is good. Refilling is pretty easy as well. I’d say overall for a budget printer this is a good option bc ink is cheap with refills and setup is very easy. I haven’t tried printing photos or high quality items but I imagine the quality may be better if you get a more expensive item but honesty this probably does the job for like 95% of use cases the quality is actually very good don’t want to downplay it.

    Best Home Printer in Years

I, like many others, have been fed up with the cost of constantly replacing ink cartridges in my printers, and the constant ads to sign up for a printer subscription service. So, I started doing some research and came across articles about the Epson EcoTank printers. This may have been the best choice I've made in years. The printer itself is fantastic, and the ink levels --after the initial scare from when the print heads filled themselves for the first time-- have barely budged, and we print a LOT. If you want to keep your great print quality, but also save a ton of money on ink, this (and I'm assuming others in the same family) printer is what you want!
