Pro:
-No warm up time
-Fast printing and scanning speed
-Ink tanks can last a long time
-Wifi and Airprint ready
Con:
-Colors a bit washed out
-Automatic retracting paper tray can be a point of failure
-Epson print and scan apps are still clunky to use
Overall this printer does a good job of printing and scanning. The prints look good, though colors may not be that accurate. It’s fast at printing and scanning. It has a top feeder for batch copying, but lacks support for longer paper. The auto paper tray is a potential point of failure.
There are two ways to set up the printer. The recommended way is to use the phone app and run through the steps. Some minor hitches but overall it went smoothly, albeit slowly. Some steps, like adding the printer to my wifi network, took a bit of time. The other way to set it up is to install the drivers and print utilities on your computer. That one was much quicker.
Functionally, the phone app is not very useful to me. It simply does what’s already displayed on the printer screen. I’m already near the printer so I didn’t see a point in using my phone to copy or print. It is AirPrint ready, though you don’t need the app for that. The print and scan utilities on the computer seem clunky, a problem that Epson has had for years now. There’s multiple apps that could have been combined. For instance, to batch scan and save pictures, I opened ScanSmart but then to scan, it opened Scan Utility (the default scanning app) to scan. It then closes the Scan Utility window and you have to repeat the process for each image.
The print speed is pretty good, taking anywhere between 5 to 30 seconds to print a full color page, depending on the image and quality, and a few seconds for documents. Color accuracy runs cool, at least on office paper. On lightweight copy paper, it can look washed out. On more premium paper, reds had a bluish tone. A great feature is that there’s no warm up time to print. Once the printer is on, it’s ready to go.
Scanning is quick. Using the flatbed, it scans within seconds. When using the top feeder to batch scan or copy, documents take a couple of seconds. It can batch scan images, but the quality is terrible since it’s in document mode. The feeder is incompatible with the photo mode.
This printer has a paper tray that automatically extends and retracts, which while nice, seems unnecessary and is a point of failure. In fact, the first one I got had a defective tray that didn’t work. It was misaligned or off its track.
The eco tanks, if it’s anything like my other printer, can last for months for an average home user. The ink usage is very efficient.

Terrible print quality and extremely slow. Bought it to replace an inkjet printer to save $ on Ink. Returned it for the HP7602. Still much slower than my old HP InkJet but much better quality.

I am a big fan of Epson Printers and this is no exception. This unit is incredible. From the beginning youEpson has designed an incredibly easy setup. Even a first time user will be guided through the setup process. I have a small business I operate and I am needing to print quite often. I love the ink bottles that are provided with this unit. And you get FULL bottles to start. I was a little nervous during the set up with the ink bottles but the process was easy to follow and I had no issues.
This has an auto load tray for scanning, which worked really well. Some printers I have had in the past did not offer this or they did but it did not work very well. No issues so far, paper is fed easily into the printer for scanning. Love this as I need to make copies of documents to store digitally quite often.
There is a nice and easy to reach LCD screen, not this one is NOT touchscreen. That is fine, I prefer to use the mobile app to control the printer.
There are a few different options for connecting to your network, I chose to use the Wi-Fi route and it worked seamlessly, no issues at all with setup or being discoverable by my other home devices.
Print quality is excellent. I print many flyers and need the images and text to be clear and precise. These pages print with no issues, I am extremely happy with the results so far.
This printer is packed full of features and I can already see the savings with the ink bottles compared to my other printers in the past with ink cartridges and ink subscriptions. This is the way to go.

I have been using the Epson ET-3950 for close to a week now and overall, I am very happy with this printer. This printer replaces another multi-function printer from another brand and has all the same features I am used to (minus fax machine functionality).
Setup of the printer is easy. The most complicated part is removing all the tape used to keep all the parts in place during shipping… After powering the printer on, the display will show a QR code that you can scan on your phone to download the Epson Smart Panel app. The app will guide you through all the steps to get your printer up and running. This includes filling the ink. I was worried that filling the eco tank on the printer might result in some spillage but thankfully it is a no mess operation. The printer has mechanisms that stop flowage once the ink reaches the top marker in the tank.
Once all the ink has been transferred to the tanks, the printer will go through an initialization phase for the print heads. This does bring down the ink from the top notch to the second level. Thankfully the enclosed toner bottles have some extra fluid, and you can fill the tank back up once the initialization is completed.
After setup you are ready to Print and Scan. My iPhones and Windows desktops were easily able to locate the printer on my Wi-Fi network. The printer comes out of standby quickly and starts printing right away. You can print one or two sided. The scanner also works well. You can scan directly from the glass or use the Auto-Document Feeder. The ADF even supports scanning documents on two sides.

Best printer I've had in years

Just wow. I never thought that I'd be so happy with a printer. This Epson EcoTank ET-3950 was replacing another major brand printer that I had grown extremely frustrated with. The ink didn't last. The Wi-Fi kept disconnecting. The printer would randomly disappear from the app and I'd have to reconnect, and sometimes it took numerous tries to reconnect.
So a new printer became a necessity and I saw the Epson EcoTank system and I started researching. I decided that I like the idea and ended up with the Epson EcoTank ET-3950. It fit everything that I needed in being wireless, has a flatbed and ADF scanner. I couldn't be happier. Set up was easy. You download the app and it walks you through. I connected to Wi-Fi, filled the tanks and there was even some ink leftover, and you're off. It took less than 5 minutes. You do a firmware update afterwards and it prints an alignment/configuration page and the machine is running. Printing is fast for my simple home use and the colors and text are high quality. Scanning is also easy. You can use the buttons on the machine or initiate from the app. But most importantly, it stays connected and I can print something from anywhere, if I choose to.
I'm definitely an Epson convert and would recommend this Epson EcoTank ET-3950 to anyone.

Great Home Office Printer and Scanner

The Epson EcoTank ET-3950 is a fantastic little home/home office inkjet printer. Text and image printing is fantastic. Color printing is good at normal print modes and amazing at high-resolution. Setup took some time but relatively easy and straight forward without the use of the Epson Smart Panel app. Physically, the printer is compact, has clean lines, and is relatively boring to look at. That may seem like a con but it isn’t. The Auto Document Feeder (ADF) is hidden away under a unique door system. The hide away ADF creates a flat horizontal surface to the top of the ET-3950 which increases both space savings and useful surface area for other things in the office. Printer calibration is unique and mostly automated. Overall, I am pleased with the ET-3950.
Setup:
Epson recommends the Epson Smart Panel mobile app to setup the ET-3950. I disagree. I found the Epson Smart Panel app setup process confusing. Choosing, “New Connection” from the setup screen lead me down the path to some Bluetooth troubleshooting AI chat bot. Huh? Instead, I opted to set up the ET-3950 via the printer’s LCD screen. Setup via using the ET-3950 LCD screen and control buttons proved straight forward and easy in comparison.
Total setup took about 40 minutes: 10 minutes to perform initial configuration and network connection, 20 minutes to load the ink and prime the pumps, and about 10 minutes to calibrate the print head and finalize setup. My Windows 11 and MacBook laptops found the printer on the network and loaded the appropriate drivers within a minute or two. On a side note, the ink bottles and ink loading mechanism that Epson developed is fantastic! It is easy to load the tanks with minimal risk of mess.
The Epson Smart Panel app on my phone had no issues connecting to the ET-3950 once setup was complete.
Printing:
I had zero issues printing documents and images. I am using common 8 ½ x 11 white printer paper that I bought in bulk from my local office supply store. Text is near-laser quality. There are some jaggies along long curves such as “)” and “O”. But, it is nothing that anyone is ever going to notice unless it is explicitly pointed out.
Color images are a huge surprise. I grabbed some high-resolution images of from the internet including an Iron Man image, a fan produced Star Wars Death Star Battle Scene, an image of a Dagot, and other random images. Normal, default color prints were a bit washed out color wise. The images printed clear, lines were clean, and there was zero print head banding on the page.
High Resolution color images were fantastic! Again, like with text, the color images were near laser quality enough that I would call them laser quality. I printed a huge image of a fan produced Star Wars Death Star battle with was rich in bright colors as many different shades of grey and black. The image was compressed from 4K resolution to the highest resolution supported by the printer. The results was a ready-to-display high resolution image that anyone would be proud to display. The image was clear. There was no sign of color bleeding. No print head banding, anywhere. There were a few instances where detail was lost. But this is most likely due to compressing a huge image to a lower resolution than anything to do with the printer.
Copying:
The very first item I scanned as a comic book cover. The book graphic novel size. As such, the ET-3950’s scanner cover hinge expands vertically to allow for thicker objects such as books. The scan of the image was quick. The reproduction was quick, accurate, and near the original colors of the book cover. I would say the copy was less intense in color than the original. Overall, good enough. The ET-3950 allows for some reproduction adjustments such as contrast. Meaning, it is possible to make adjustments to get the as-close copy that you want. Like with the high-resolution images I discussed above, the images looked good, clear, had plenty of definition, and, on their own, the images looked really close to the original.
Automatic Document Feeder:
The ADF can be a bit finicky. The paper needs to be inserted into the ADF just until the paper offers a slight resistance. Otherwise, the scanner app will report either a paper jam or a general error. For my testing, I used a combination of full-page images, single sided text, and double-sided text. The ET-3950 did a good job with the images. It did a good job with single sided text. Scanning pages with text on both sides generally scanned the primary text and the shadow of the text on the other side of the page. This was an issue when scanning with the Epson Smart Panel app on my iPhone. I did not find this to be an issue when scanning when using the Epson Scan Windows utility from my laptop.
Paper Tray:
Normally a paper tray is nothing to get excited about. However, Epson kind of made theirs something to get excited about. The tray itself will hold 100 pages. What you will notice is that the paper tray door is spring loaded. You will also notice that the output tray is not in your way like almost every ink jet printer on the market. In the case of the ET-3950, the output tray automatically deploys when the ET-3950 receives a print command. This is such a cool feature to watch in action. The output tray pushes the paper tray door open and then catches the output documents and images. The output tray does not automatically retract when the print job is removed. The user must manually initiate the auto retrieval function by pressing the double arrow button on the printer’s control pad. The LCD will have a message at the bottom indicating the correct button to press. Finally, the paper tray door closes as the output tray retracts. This leaves the printer with a clean, flat finish.
Control Panel:
The control panel lays flat against the side of the ET-3950. It is on a swing hinge that allows it to swing from vertical to horizontal and everywhere in between. This makes it easy to use. The color LCD is not the biggest I have seen. But it is adequate for its function and easy to read. The control panel has a cheap feeling film over the buttons. But underlying buttons are serious business. They are actual buttons and not the shallow capacitive buttons used on other printers. I think Epson made a good compromise between the overall clean presentation, functionality, and tactile feel.
Final Notes:
The ET-3950 has a lot going for it. Text, image, and photo quality are fantastic. Soggy paper is a thing of the past even with the most highly ink saturated pages. The flatbed scanner is fantastic for scanning and copying documents and images. Windows and Mac connectivity is simply and straight forward. If you are looking for an outstanding printer, then you won’t go wrong with the ET-3950. If you have a heavy reliance on the ADF feature, then you will want to look elsewhere.

I have been intrigued by the idea of using tank based ink printers instead of cartridges for years. I finally decide to take the plunge with the Epson EcoTank ET-3950 wireless all-in-one color printer and the results have been interesting.
The printer's packaging provides excellent protection. In fact, there are even instructions on where all the tape is located so that you don't accidentally miss something! Setup instructions are included in the box and there is also a QR code that points you to the Epson Smart Panel app which provides excellent hand-holding for the initial installation and configuration. The app downloaded, installed and found my device and home Wi-Fi network without a hitch. It then walked me through the steps I needed to follow and even included links to video tutorials! Overall, a very good piece of software.
I was a little nervous about the initial ink installation process. The included literature and some on-line reviews made it sound like things could go wrong fairly easily but that was NOT my experience. The ink comes in individual bottles that are "keyed" so that you can't get them mixed up and the printer will only accept ink up to the "full" marker so that it will not overfill and spill. On-line articles suggest that the initial ink charging period was in the 25 minute range - not my experience. It only took 10 minutes and there was a countdown timer to keep me appraised of the progress. In fact, the setup app even took me on to do the network setup while the charging progress completed! The unit comes with a generous amount of ink and should last for many hundreds of pages before needing a refill.
The printer features a small color display on its control panel which is easy to read. The functions are clearly labeled but the navigation buttons have some weird labeling and take a little trial-and-error to figure out! In fact, I prefer using the app which I find to be easier to operate.
Paper handling includes both a standard tray which can be adjusted to hold various sizes with a motorized output tray and an Automated Document Feeder (ADF) for feeding multiple sheets into the scanner. (I was not able to find a way to use the ADF for copying from the app. It does work directly from the control panel on the printer! Hopefully something that a future update can address). You can also lift the lid for direct access for items that cannot be fed automatically.
Print speed and quality are both very good. Documents show very fine details. Color printing is also good but not as vibrant as I was expecting. In the printer's defense I am using plain copier paper. I suspect that using paper specifically designed for inkjet printers is going to provide MUCH better results.
In summary, although the initial price for the printer is a bit steep, some simple math shows me that I will quickly make that up by not having to pay the ridiculously inflated costs for individual ink cartridges. I believe that I will break even quite quickly and the be able to enjoy savings well into the future!

First off, let me say that I have grown to love this printer — and for some reasons that you might not necessarily think about when getting a new printer. Yes, it has those awesome ink reservoirs, and it uses the ‘502’ ink which I think is pretty common for the various Eco-Tank models (easy to find). It’s so nice not have to mess with potentially leaky cartridges anymore — and don’t worry, you can’t accidentally put the wrong color in any of the reservoirs. Epson has that figured out.
A couple reasons that aren’t so common — I like the fact that I can have an All-in-One printer with a document feeder…WITH A COMPLETELY FLAT TOP! (at least once I’ve closed the document feeder). Not that I would recommend this to anyone, but I can temporarily stack a couple transient folders and other documents on the top surface.
Another reason — with a touch of a button, I can close the cantilever tray. You know, the one that all printers have to catch the printed document. In the closed position, when the command to print is made, it slowly and smoothly opens and extends. Both of these features lead to a slick, clean footprint. I like that.
The ONLY reason that I’m dinging this one star is due to the sensitivity of the wifi receiver. After spending what seemed to be a couple hours trying to get the ET-3950 to connect and stay connected to our network, I decided to reconfigure my desk so that the printer was more ‘out in the open.’ That did the trick. It now connects within 30 seconds of being powered up and, more importantly, it stays connected. My old ‘sibling’ brand of printer never had any issues with connectivity over the last 10 years (but it developed other issues).
I like that the ET-3950 can take a half ream of paper. This may not be a big deal to many of you, but I’ve never had a printer that could do that. Also, the ability to scan a two-sided document without having to flip that document? Crazy!
There seem to be more companies going with ink-reservoir-style printers. I see no reason to stray from the first and, in my opinion, the best.

The Epson ET-3950 solves the biggest gripe I had with inkjet printers, the pesky cartridges. Over the last 10 years or so it seems as if the cartridges have become smaller and more expensive. Epson is trying to do way with the cartridge by introducing the All in one color supertank printer. Each bottle of ink is the equivalent of 90 cartridges which should be equivalent to 6,600 pages go black ink and 5500 pages of color ink. Filling the ink is mess free and simple to do. The ink levels are clearly visible through the windows on the front of the printer. Initial set up was fast and simple as it took me about 15 minutes after downloading the Epson app on my phone. The printer has the ability to print 18 ppm black and 9ppm color which is more than adequate for my home office needs. It also features a 250 sheet capacity and auto duplex printing which is great for all of my double sided printing. The printer also features wireless mobile printing as including Apple AirPrint which allows you to print from your device with ease. I had a slight issue with it giving me some print errors when trying to wirelessly print however everything corrected itself after a quick restart of the printer. You can also a register the printer with Epson Connect which will allow you to print from anywhere by sending an attachment to the you printer's email address. Only time will tell how long the ink will last but being familiar with epson quailty printer's I believe Epson hit a homerun with this one

A Good Printer, but short of Perfect

The Epson EcoTank 3950 is a good printer but they need to work on the setup to make it perfect. This isnt my first Epson printer or product, and I really like my projector and liked my previous printer, they're definitely better than some other brands of printers. The ET3950 looks great and doesnt take up much space, its perfect for home offices and or students. The EcoTank line uses liquid ink refill bottles which I like alot because they aren't locked behind paywalls or software or subscriptions like inkjet cartridge printers are and I was even able to find some cheap refill options online. The quality of printing, copying, and scanning is excellent I absolutely trust whatever documents I needed would come out perfect. Now for the negative, the setup can be infuriating and needlesly complicated. Depending on the device you're mainly going to be using that should be how you start your setup. I made the mistake of starting out on my phone because the printer control screen displayed a QR code for setup. This made connecting to my laptop a headache because it kept wanting me to change wifi settings and then leave open to connect and have the setup packet on laptop ready but the ET3950 kept reconnecting to the mobile app or my laptop showed it couldn't find the device. This was the case for a few hours until I reset the printer and deleted the app and all the data from my phone and completely restarted the process, which settled it. Overall, if you can deal with this headache then its an excellent printer.

I have had other Epson printers in the past and they work great and this one has improved even better! The software setup was more efficient than the past models. It didn't take to long to setup and get online. The instructions are very clear and the bottles of ink you have to add to the tank are very easy to fill. There is actually some extra ink in the bottle after you fill the tanks. It says it should last 3 years so I am excited to see how long this ink will last. Loading paper is very easy and holds quite a bit of paper (250 sheets). Once you are connected to your wifi network printing from your devices is very easy. Making copies was also easy and quick to use as well as scanning. This printer does not take up to much room and is fairly quiet. What is very good feature is two sided printing. What I did enjoy was it came with a usb port which I had a few files on a flash drive and was able to print items off of those devices. This will be our main printer for quite some time and look forward to seeing how long the ink lasts.

I've had a few wireless printers over the years and it's always been a challenge to actually get them to print. It's really the easiest thing it should do! So far this Epson printer is doing its job. It's so very nice for the printer to be online and available when you need to print. I print a lot from my phone or tablet and it has been working great!
Setup was interesting. Not a bad experience but kinda involved. It took a little over 30 minutes to get it up and running. Download the app and follow the instructions. I've only had laser printers or ones that take cartridges before so the eco tank is different. I really like it though. Save money and the environment by just refilling the ink and recycling the bottles. No throwing away expensive spent cartridges.
Print quality is great. Text is crisp and pictures are very vivid. You can easily change to printing photos from the app and it asks for the size and type of paper you'd like to use. Print speed isn't as fast as a laser printer but it's pretty close.
This printer is great for the office too. Scan documents with the auto feeder or the flatbed. Make copies, single or dual sided.
I think this Epson printer can do everything you need it to. I do recommend it!

Solid All-in-One With Excellent Print Resolution

The Epson ET-3950 is yet another all-in-one printer in Epson’s EcoTank line up. The EcoTank refers to the printer taking ink bottle refills, being “economical” with the ink, and coming with a claimed 3 years of ink. My personal experience with other EcoTank printers is that perhaps if this was just in a home office of an adult who doesn’t run a business that regularly prints things or have kids for whom one regularly prints things, you’d get three years. For the other cases, expect more like 6 months. Functionality wise, you have a wireless printer that can also copy and scan. There’s a feed tray to automatically feed pages for the copy or scan functionality. You can also lift up the cover to manually place documents on the scan bed. There’s just a single paper tray that holds up to 30 sheets and it supports double sided printing and collation.
Ok, so, specs aside, what’s the experience actually using it? Set up is a breeze. Pretty much you’re taking off some packing material, plugging in the power cord, and configuring wifi, fill the ink, and calibrate. This particular model using touch sensitive buttons and a touchscreen for navigation. While there’s an app, it’s not needed for setup or mobile printing. There were no issues getting it to connect to my wifi network and it immediately printed from my desktop, laptop, and android phone. Print quality was good. Black and white prints were fast with color ones taking about twice as long. If you’re printing color heavy documents, you’d want to either pause between pages or grab individual pages to give them time to dry. I would not recommend double sided photo printing. That said, this is par for the course. While I didn’t glean anything special from scanning, copying a photo showed this printer has very good print resolution. Breaking out the photo paper, I was pleasantly surprised that the ET-3950 can serve as a decent photo printer when used with appropriate paper. That said, it still suffered from smudging on the edges of some prints so if you do a lot of those, be prepared for fallout.
I was pretty impressed by this printer though there are some areas where it could be better. Looks wise, the printer is pretty standard though it looks a lot more boring than other mid-level home office positioned ones. It’s also a bit on the larger side. While the black and white print speed is nice and the potential long lived ink is a plus, the tray capacity of only 30 pages is laughable. And with something that has such good print resolution, it’s annoying that it doesn’t have an aux paper tray (could squeeze one in with it’s size) or aux paper feeder so I could feed in a sheet of photo paper without needing to disturb the main tray. For these reasons, I rate the printer as a solid 4 stars.

Does what it's supposed to office work-Now faster!

The ET-3950 is a new model of an ET line I've been using for the past 4+ years.
These printers have a singular value proposition: Simple, capable (now faster) color office printing for documents and projects with lower TCO and ink costs than comparable cartridge-based systems. This latest model delivers on all the promises from before. The printer prints beautiful color prints, with decent image fidelity for an office printer, and VERY FAST output compared to its predecessors, now boasting up to an ISO 18 pages-per-minute rating, I could see the difference in this vs my slightly older EcoTank printer I pitted it up against. This printer arrived just in time, as my long-out-of-warranty earlier model had just stopped working on WiFi networks. I was a bit disappointed that the new system didnt support newer WiFi, opting for WiFi6 instead of newer WiFi 6e or 7. I expected EPSON's latest at-bat to include the latest tech for future-proofing, especially considering the higher price this time around.
Printing didn't disappoint, but it also didn't impress. While fast, I attempted to run a few photo prints through with EPSON studio gloss photo-grade paper, and this worked, but I just couldn't get skin tones or sky colors to come through with the fidelity I was looking for. I didnt downrate for this though, as the right printers for such work are the ET-8500 or ET-15000 series for creatives.
There are some new design flourishes on this year's 3950 model: New LED accents over the eco tank door, and a closure of the front panel and paper tray that make this thing have an overall smaller closed/inactive footprint, and some nice changes to the button/control design on the main panel.
All in all for those looking for EcoTank reliability, good office print quality, not looking to do photography prints, and looking for the lowest possible cost-per-print for ink, this is your machine.

The Epson EcoTank ET-3950 is an all-in-one (without fax) inkjet printer that uses high capacity, refillable tanks instead of cartridges. I have been using Epson refillable tank printers for about the last 4 years and I find them to be reliable and frustration free. There is a greater upfront cost compared to cartridge based printers, but that cost is more than made up in the reduced cost of ink over the life of the printer and not having to deal with the frustration of constantly ordering expensive ink cartridges.
The ET-3950 comes with enough ink to print up to 6600 black or 5500 color pages and improves upon previous models with the addition of auto duplex scanning and faster print speeds. It comes with a 30 sheet auto document feeder. Connectivity includes wifi, wifi direct, ethernet and usb plus support for mobile printing via Apple AirPrint.
In summary, if you are looking for an all in one device that is versatile and takes the hassle (and cost) out of ink jet printing, I recommend the ET-3950.

I haven't used Epson in years but with the price of ink being a solid expense and with kids that love to print and color, I was happy to look at alternatives. We all know about the brands that rely on cartridges that auto-empty over time, whether you use them or not, and also expire plastic cartridges and force you to buy their microchipped OEM ones or face warnings etc.
Until now, Epson started this trend with the EcoTank lineup, except they also bypassed the cartridges altogether. Great! Less plastic waste, less vendor lock-in! Just refill with ink from either Epson or wherever it is cheapest and pour it in. What a great idea.
Now with Kids I appreciate this even more. They are always asking to print out coloring outlines to color themselves, or detailed art they can then cut out and make into arts and crafts. Now I no longer cringe and mentally calculate how much in ink that dragon head is going to cost me, or how soon I'll have to buy more ink, because I can just refill this printer with the cheaper refill ink.
Also, the 3950 is a nice All-in-one which means it can also scan and is wireless. Because all the kids are in school, we can't keep all of the artwork they take home. So we scan a lot of it in! Throw it on the NAS at home and that cuts down on the clutter. We do ask of course but the kids love this too because they can just look at their creative art without fumbling through a pile of papers, or worry about damaging them or making a mess.
Definitely recommend it, we put ours in the craft room so that the kids don't have to come in my home office to get their prints or to scan and the older ones can help the younger ones print and scan, its great!

Very nice printer. It does things I wouldn't have thought it could do. So happy that it talks with my phone. Can't wait to get some photo paper and print some photos!
