Customers are saying

Customers have good things to say about the EcoTank ET-4850's print quality, ease of use, and straightforward setup. Many appreciate its compact size. While some users find the noise level a bit high and have experienced challenges with the document feeder and scanning functions, the positive feedback on printing and ease of use outweighs these concerns for most. A few customers also mentioned the printer's price point as a potential drawback.

I loved the idea reducing the cost of ink cartridges, but after I set up the printer, it didn't take long before the rollers were squeaking and eventually leaving a black mark on the copies.

    I love Epson's EcoTank ET-4850

I love Epson's EcoTank all-in-one printers. I hated the fact that I would have to buy small ink cartridges for my older printers, only for them to run out so fast. Epson's EcoTank printers have remedied that issue with their supertank printers and the EcoTank ET-4850 is no exception. Before getting the EcoTank ET-4850, I was using Epson's ET-3760 all-in-one printer. I went about one year without having to refill the tanks, even while in law school. I am sure that the EcoTank ET-4850 will be the same, as these EcoTank printers are very efficient. As of right now, I have had no connectivity issues, which I will admit I have had with their ET-3760, but is an easy fix by a simple restart. The EcoTank ET-4850 is extremely easy to set up, and best of all, refills are a breeze with leak-free Epson ink bottles. Another added bonus is the cost of refill bottles, which is not bad, considering the fact that ink lasts so long. Overall, I am extremely happy with the EcoTank ET-4850. It is compact and does everything that I need it to do. Buy with confidence!

    Difficult Setup, Great Ink System

I bought this printer to mostly print in black and white, but I wanted color available. I also at times print user manuals for vintage amateur radio equipment, which are sometimes over 100 pages, so I wanted something cheap on ink. I also needed a scanner, and while I preferred a full duplex scanner that can scan both sides of a page on a stack of pages like my previous Brother 4710 printer, I could no longer find such in any printer I looked at under $1,000. I found the Epson EcoTank line and looked through most of them and settled on this one. It has the larger ink tanks than the less expensive models, and reviews said it was fine for envelope and card printing, so I purchased this model. I got a price match at another retailer and purchased an extended warranty since every printer I looked at the reviews of had some people who had premature failure, or needed something fixed, and I didn't want to end up owning a brick after the manufacturer's warranty was over. I normally don't buy extended warranties except on laptops but made an exception here. Setting up the machine was difficult at best, even with the Epson technical support. I had already got the printer to connect to my network on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks in my home, but I couldn't get my laptop to find the printer. The tech support person had a fairly strong Indian or Pakistani accent, and being hard of hearing to begin with, this made understanding her problematic. We tried a few different things, and what finally got it recognized was an Epson pop-up that tried to troubleshoot the network connection. It kept popping up, and I'd let it run while the support person tried to help me, and eventually it seemed to fix it. I haven't tried this on photo paper, envelopes, or anything except letter paper. The duplex printing works fine. It has a much smaller footprint than my Brother printer did, but then again, the scanner doesn't scan 8.5 x 14 inch paper, either. What is probably the greatest feature of this printer is the EcoTank system. It comes with enough ink to print 7,500 black and white and 6,500color pages, or about 90 ink cartridges that other printers would have to use up to provide that much printing. This brings the cost per page way down, and saves you some time and trouble of not having to change so many ink cartridges. It comes with empty ink tanks, and 4 bottles of ink. Filling the ink tanks is very easy. There will be a little ink left in each bottle. After priming the ink system, it will have lost a bit of the ink in all tanks, so I used what was left to top off each ink tank after I had it up and running. Just enough room was left in the ink tanks after priming the ink system to allow the rest of the ink to be used up. They tell you in the instructions that priming the machine will use enough ink that the first charge of ink won't quite last as long as when you do your first refill. However, topping the tanks up with the small amount of ink left in the bottles brought the level back up to the full level, so don't throw away the bottles after filling it. Run the priming operation, then use what's left to bring it back up to the full mark. The printer will ask if you topped up the 4 colors and if you tell it yes, then it will reset the calculations back to a full tank for each color and black. I deducted one star for the difficulty of setup combined with off-shore tech support that has a harsh accent and therefore was difficult to understand. I have nothing against people from other countries, but most companies screen their potential offshore tech support operations for an almost perfect American or English sound with little of the local dialect sound heard. I expected more of Epson. All in all, this seems like a very good printer. Time will tell if I have problems down the road. I will eventually use it to print some envelopes from time to time, and maybe make cards with it, too. If I have problems with the paper-handling, I will likely come back and update this review.

Sometimes less is more and more-well, it's a toss-up! I can't decide whether I see the advantages. It's small and it's speed is delayed. I guess that is the delay when broad-band.

Epson - EcoTank ET-4850 All-in-One Cartridge-Free Supertank Printer has way too much going on but I can't justify the price. I've been really curious about printers that claim to do so many things like copy, scan, print, fax (really, it actually still has a fax) and more. Printer is only 14.8 inches wide, 13.7 inches deep and 9.1 inches high but seems bulkier. It has a large 250 sheet paper tray that has adjustable sides but not length, 2.4 inch touchscreen (a bit small for my fingers), pullout output tray, smartphone app, etc.....Document feeder on top folds out if you want to copy or scan a stack of pages but good luck getting a steady feed. Mine likes to not pull in the paper even though it shows loaded on the touch screen so I get a blank scan or copy on the first try. For just one page it is easier to just open the lid and put your document on the glass but it aligns in the front corner which is the opposite of every printer I have ever used. Paper tray sometimes feeds two blank sheets through when I print then tells me the paper tray is empty (?) Ink bottles (Epson size 502) drain into a tank hidden under the scanner lid and show in windows on the front of the printer. Four starter bottles are included. Amazing how they automatically release when placed on the posts and the ink fills into the tanks. Not a drip or spill so installation was no mess. Claims that one bottle is equal to 90 cartridges (6500 pages Black and White and 5200 pages Color). I've been printing both B&W and Color and quality is good and colors accurate. Tried to set up printer using the link from the QR code but halfway through it lost connection to my iPhone sitting next to the printer and kept wanting to "retry after moving closer to the printer". Never worked and I ended up completing setup manually. This printer includes an installation CD as well and if you don't have a reader in your computer like my newer laptop you can use the Epson website. Unfortunately, the CD loaded so many Epson programs and options on my older laptop I had to delete some to free up space. WiFi only sees my 2.4 Ghz but works on my 5G (?) USB and Ethernet ports available for a wired connection. No manual just a foldout brochure with the CD and instructions inside the box lid. User Guide installs on your computer during setup from the CD or website. Printer is fast (15.5 pages per minute B&W, 8.5 ppm Color) but also noisy so you may want to put it away from your desk and go get printouts and get your steps in. Scan resolution up to 1200 by 2400 dpi/ppp. Print resolution up to 4800 by 1200 dpi/ppp. Printer will go to sleep after use but white ring power button is always on. Can't find a setting to make that turn off. I prefer the Epson Smart Panel on my iPhone for most uses. You can Print Documents, Scan, Document Capture (Scan with Camera App), Copy, Make a Preset Copy (still not sure what that does), Clean Printheads, watch Video Manuals, Troubleshoot and more. You can also monitor the 4 ink tanks. I don't think this printer monitors my ink usage like my other one to send more when it detects that I am low. This model printer really does seem made for a home office that has medium to high usage with so many functions and too many programs for my home computer. I'm going to uninstall more of them and operate it from the iPhone app and control panel while I learn to use all the settings. Unfortunately the printer construction is plastic on plastic on plastic so durability may be limited for heavy use and doesn't justify the price. Ink refill bottles (502) are available from Epson or at Best Buy.

    Good Home Office All-in-One Printer

The Epson Ecotank ET-4850 All-in-One printer is a good choice for the small or home office. It offers excellent printing, good speed, a very small footprint, and an extremely low cost per page to print. The purchase price is also very high compared to comparable conventional cartridge based ink jet printers. Instead of cartridges, ink is supplied in special valved bottles that fill permanent ink tanks in the printer. I would estimate the cost per page for ink to be a penny or less, about one tenth the cost of a conventional inkjet printer with cartridges. If you do a lot of printing, this could well justify the higher initial cost of the printer. Setup was very easy, and can be done manually from the touchscreen or from the downloaded Android/IOS app. Unpack the unit, fill the tanks, power it on, charge the jets, connect to the network and you're good to go. The ink bottles don't leak and are keyed, so it's not possible to fill a tank with the wrong color ink. Charging the jets takes about 10 min. I tried both wired and wireless networking (separately) just for grins. Both connected quickly and without issue. The wireless is 2.4Ghz only and the wired is 100mb full duplex. IPv6 is fully supported. Downloaded and installed the Windows driver package and was up and printing. Also added the printer to my Chromebook, it was automagically discovered. Printing from an Android phone was equally easy. Printing is reasonably fast, the estimate for both color & b&W pages seemed to be accurate. The print quality itself is quite excellent, probably the best I've seen in an ink jet printer. I would put text quality on a par with a good laser printer. Photos actually printed very, very well, in spite of this not being marketed as a photo printer. Color saturation and differentiation were excellent, even printed on plain paper. Even better on photo paper. It did take a long time, about a minute per photo to print. Scan and copy quality is excellent as well. The scanner expands to allow books to be placed under the cover and has a (untested) facility to remover any distortion caused by the book binding. The scanner also has a 30 page sheet feeder. This leads me to my three complaints about the printer. First, although the printer does duplex printing, the scanner does NOT do duplex scanning. To copy double sided documents, you have to run the document through the scanner twice, remembering how to flip the original and the copy. A $500 All-in-One should have a duplex scanner. Second, there is only one 250 page print tray, no second tray or single sheet feeder. In order to print an (one) envelope, you have to pull the paper tray out, remove the paper, insert one envelope and resize the paper guides, and shove the tray back in. Then repeat to put the paper back in the tray. Third, the printout tray slides out and seems fairly flimsy. I'm worried about catching it sometimes and snapping it off. Epson has obviously front-loaded the cost of the Ecotank units a bit to make up for the loss of cartridge sales, but the ET-4850 could still be quite a money saver over the long run. The deficiencies are annoying but are things that don't affect me very often. With a cost of operation and print quality rivaling B&W laser printers, but with the capacity for color, the Epson Ecotank ET-4850 should be on your short list for a home/office printer.
