Customers frequently mention the FastFoto FF-640's ease of use, excellent image quality, and user-friendly software as significant advantages. The scanner's compact size is also a plus for many users. However, some customers find the price to be a drawback, and a few have reported occasional issues with paper handling. Fast and Reasonably Priced

Let me preface this by saying that this is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. No conditions were placed on the scope of the evaluation or the content of the review, except that it should be honest. So here's my honest review. Years ago I was shopping for a high-volume document scanner, and the cheapest one we could find that met our needs was in excess of $10,000. Times have changed, and now for a fraction of that price I can get a scanner that is more full-featured than that scanner of old. I've been testing this FF-640 scanner for about 1 week and a half now, and I'm impressed. Because of that old need - and an impending need - for a high-speed document scanner, when I first installed it I focused on that aspect. At 600PPI single-sided black-and-white, the scanner spat out about 45 pages per minute. Scanning double-sided didn't take any longer. Oddly enough, the thing that slowed the process the most was my computer - it couldn't keep up with that much throughput and I found myself waiting for a minute-plus after my pile of pages was successfully scanned. Greyscale didn't seem to slow the scanner down either, and I didn't have any color pages to scan other than a single sheet or two...so I didn't test it in high-speed mode. For photos the scanner performed admirably as well. I'm a color geek _ i actually get paid to mess with color at a commercial printer - so I won't address the color accuracy except to say that adjustment was easy enough after the fact. I'm not a knobs and buttons kind of person at the front-end; I prefer to make adjustments myself after the scan is complete. There were no "hot spots" or dead areas of the scanner head, so side-to-side consistency was very good. Keep in mind that this scanner feeds your pages through it just like a desktop inkjet printer, so it may not be the best solution for irreplaceable photos - just in case it jams and tears or creases the print. Software-wise it's pretty decent. The initial installation was simple enough, but I noticed that it only installed the FastFoto software and not the OCR software as advertised. Once I restarted and then ran the Updater, though, it installed all the other components. On the Mac, anyhow, there are three separate software choices for doing the actual scanning - FastFoto, Epson Scan, and Epson Document Capture. FastFoto is a one-button solution for scanning - load your documents and hit the "scan" button on the front and the software makes all the choices for you. Epson Document Capture and FastFoto both top out at a 600PPI scan resolution, but Epson Scan will actually give you the option of scanning at 1200PPI - helpful when enlarging a photographic print or when scanning a document with tiny text. All three work fine, and give enough options for any user from novice through expert. Overall my experience with this scanner has been excellent - with the exception of the unclear nature of how the software installed, the setup and use has been great and I'd recommend it to anyone who's in need of a scanner focused on speed.

    Speedy high-quality scans!

This scanner is my new favourite tool! The scanner takes up barely more room than a letter-sized sheet of paper on your desk (minus the height, of course). It’s compact size made it easy for me to find a home for it on my increasingly-crowded laptop desk. It is extremely easy to set up, as I only had to connect to pieces together, plug in the cables, and download the software from Epson. After that, it’s literally a push of the button to digitize dozens of photos at a time. The “fast” in the title is not exaggerated — the little machine scans images and spits them back out in the blink of an eye. It’s a really good thing there’s an extendable part to stop the photos before they go flying across the room; I forgot to use it once and then had to pick up photos scattered about in front of the scanner and on the floor. The instructions and included software are user-friendly while still allowing a good degree of freedom through settings. Unfortunately, some of the features seem a bit wonky, although hopefully that could be fixed through software updates; for example, the scanner doesn’t seem to want to detect handwriting, instead leading to having to scan both sides of every image. This is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review.

A dream come true! Having taken literally thousands of pictures in the pre-digital days, I had been dreading the day I would have to scan them all into my computer. I had been doing this laborious task painfully slow with my printer/scanner/copier until I received a free sample to use for this review. What a time saver! The set up was easy and in no time I was scanning. It is extremely fast and easy to use. I especially like the feature that fixes my old photos and makes them look new again. I was even able to scan some of my old panorama photos that are odd shaped. The scans are high quality images and my old photos are now protected from time, aging, and the elements. I would strongly recommend this scanner to anyone with lots of photos to scan.

This is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. To start with it was very easy to unpackage and set up/ download the software. I had a bit of trouble with the Fast Foto software at first where it kept crashing, but that was fixed but reinstalling it. It can scan 30 photos in around 30 seconds as advertised and the quailty is great. It would be great for digitizing collections of old family photos efficiently. The fixes and enhancement features work great and colour photos, but I found they should be turned off for black and white photos. The double sided scanning option is helpful for scanning photos as it can pickup only handwriting and not numbers from printing. The noise it makes can be a bit loud so it may startle any nearby pets. I also found the quailty was very good for quicly scanning documents.

This is a review for the Epson FastFoto that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. The Epson FastFoto is fast, simple, and perfect for high-speed document and photo scanning. The device shines in speed, software, and durability. This scanner is clearly designed for small office or home office use, but would be perfect in a photo processing lab or other professional environment. The device is probably not for everyone. The price tag is a little off putting for the casual user, but if you need a high speed photo and document scanner, this is the device you need. It maxes out at 600x600 resolution, but this higher resolution than you could possibly need for most everyday uses. Most paper documents aren't even printed at that high of a resolution. Picture scanning is clearly where this device shines. An 8.5x11 photo can be scanned at 600x600 resolution in 3-5 seconds. This speed is even faster for smaller photo files, and will amaze you when doing things like 4x6s... it literally just flies through them. The scanner can do double-sided scanning, saving things as a file marked with "side b". The software has thresholding mechanisms in place so it doesn't needlessly scan backsides if it has a watermark or something on it. For document scanning, the included software has optical character recognition, which does a commendable job. It's not perfect, but I've never seen any that was. This certainly ranked along the top. This would be a good device for scanning in receipts for processing. I wouldn't hesitate to use this for scanning large folders of documents. If you are a home user with a significant scanning need, or SoHo, this scanner will handle all your high-speed scanning needs. This is excellent for paperless offices. It's an excellent product.

Finally an easy way to scan a stack of photos

    Posted .

I am amazed and enlightened by how easy this scanner is to use. I have had a few flat bed scanners in the past ten years and have some experience with those, but this is something different entirely, and I could not be more happy about that! There has never been an easy way to quickly scan 20-30 photos all in one shot. With flat bed scanners, you would always have to place a single photo or a few photos (depending on the software) and do a scan, open up the flat bed take out the photos, TRY not to smudge the screen, and repeat. For families with shoe boxes full of photos this is an impossible task. This scanner makes that ALL go away! Not only does it quickly scan a stack a photos, but it can also scan the back side of the photos if messages/dates or anything you might have on the back is something that you might want to save as well...I was NOT expecting this feature at all. Also, the software will label it as the same photo number, but with a B to correspond with the back of that photo. Another great feature is the event tagging for photos. You can easily edit the photo names to all correspond to a specific event/date to have easy file indexing later on. This is not just one of those fast document scanners (it does that as well) but the quality on these photos that are scanned are amazing. For anyone that has stacks and stacks of old photos in a box in the attic, the time has come to digitize all those photos....this is worth the investment, you will NOT be disappointed. There are so many other great features in the software that I have not even touched upon, anything you are looking the scanner is just plain great. Full Disclosure: This is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review.

This is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to beta test and review. Wow! That was my initial reaction when scanning my first batch of photos with the Epson FastFoto 640. This thing is fast. Amazingly fast. My wife and I had been looking for a good solution for scanning and backing up shoebox upon shoebox of family photos. This scanner fits the bill. Even on the high resolution setting, scanning photos is quick and painless. Scanning and image processing are just a tiny bit slower at the high resolution setting. What I like most about this scanner is the fact that you can set it to scan both the front and back of the photos so all of the notes that my mom used to write on the back of photos won't be lost. Another great feature is the automatic color correction of old, faded photos. This has done a great job of restoring my childhood pictures from the late 70's and early 80's. You can configure it to keep both the original and enhanced scans so that's a great touch also. Delicate older photos can be placed in a protective sleeve for scanning to help ensure they won't get damaged during scanning. I've used this sleeve with several of my grandmother’s photos from the 40's and 50's and haven't had an issue yet. A microfiber cloth is included so you can wipe off any dust or other contaminants from your photos prior to scanning. I’ve scanned over 250 3x5 photos so far and have had just one instance of the scanner jamming. In that instance I had missed a piece of tape on the back of a photo that caused it to stick to another one. Clearing the jam was an easy process and my photos were undamaged. In addition to being an excellent photo scanner, my wife also uses the FastFoto 640 as a document scanner for work. She loves the automatic document feeder, duplex scanning, and how quickly and easily she can get her documents scanned. Setup was fast and easy. Just install drivers and software suite and plug in the scanner’s USB cable when the setup application tells you. After that, you're off to the races. The software included with the scanner is great and should take care of everything you need in terms of scanning. You can scan either from the applications you installed or the scan button on the front of the device. Just make sure you've set your preferences for the scan button function in the Epson Scan application first. Overall I’m very pleased with this scanner. It’s fast, very easy to use, and comes with a great software bundle of scanning tools.

I have a few shoeboxes of 3x5 and 4x6 photos that are sitting around. To look at them I would have to open each envelope and go through them. Recently I’ve noticed a few of my photos were starting to discolor and even fade. If I find a gem that I want to share or want to preserve, I would scan them in on my multifunction flatbed scanner\inkjet printer. A couple years back, my brother borrowed my scanner and spent a couple days scanning 580 of our parent’s photos. It was a long and painful process. It was great at the end as we got to see and preserve photos that were 20-50 years old. This is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. I choose to do the review since I had some many the old photos and knowing the tedious process of scanning them on a regular scanner, I was interested in giving this a try. The FastFoto scanner looks like a business class document scanner that has an automatic document feeder at the top. Its footprint is about 12 inches wide by 5 inches deep but when you extend the output tray and place larger letter size sheets in the input tray you may need up to 19 inches of space for the depth. The device doesn’t ship with any media to install software on your computer, instead, it directs you to their website to download the software. I like this option because the software that comes with devices often have updates. The only negative of this would be for the people who don’t have an Internet connection. I primarily use a Mac as my main computer. The software that comes with the FastFoto scanner allows me to scan to a folder and Apple Photos software. It also allows you to automatically upload the scanned photos into Dropbox and Google Drive for sharing and/or backup. I also installed the FastFoto software on my Windows 10 desktop. One of the differences is that you can only scan to a folder. Epson includes a photo browser program but it has a minimal set of features and it’s not a photo organization application. One problem I ran across was that I was unable to download the OCR software that is included for the Mac. The FastFoto software directs you to run the Epson Software Updater App to upgrade and download new software but it never gave me the option to download the Abbyy FineReader Sprint software. I tried to look for it on the FastFoto website but I was still unsuccessful. I opened a support ticket with Epson and they responded to me quickly, notifying me that the Abbyy FineReader Sprint is not supported on the latest version of Mac OS Sierra. Abbyy hopes to get this resolved and they will release an updated version. Epson support handled this great. This will be an inconvenience but only temporary. While going through the online user guide, I’ve discovered that the all the rollers are user replaceable. Epson includes a section in the guide on how to replace each set of rollers. This is great as rollers are probably the first thing that wears out on a product like this. The FastFoto software is easy to use and offers some simple enhancements. When you scan in batches of photos, the software can ask you for a date of the photos. The Epson software uses the date to name the photos and it stores the date as the creation date in the metadata of the photos. If you use a photo organization utility, it will can sort the photos in chronological order using the metadata. The quality of the scans is good. As a photographer, I would like to have the option to save the photos as TIFFs instead of JPEGs. Overall I am happy with the product. But due to the price, it’s only worth it if you have a few thousand or more photos to scan in or if you don’t trust sending your precious photos off to a scanning service.

    Epson - Fastfoto Ff-640 High-speed Photo Scanning

This is a review for the Epson FastFoto that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. I found it so easy to set up the Epson FastFoto. I took it out of the box and started scanning over 1000 photos. The FastFoto scanner was so quick, the only thing that slowed me down was taking all of my old photos out of those photo albums. Seventeen years ago, my home was flooded by Hurricane Floyd. One of the many precious items I wanted to take out of the home were my wedding album and photos of my daughter. Needless to say, in my rushing to save what little I could, the photo albums were left behind. After the 6 foot of water subsided, I was saddened to find that the photo albums were left on the floor of my living room and the photos were ruined (or so I thought). After drying out the photos, we were able to salvage them but the quality wasn’t what I had hoped for. When I had the opportunity to test the Epson FastFoto, I used the Fast Foto Fix restoration setting and to my amazement, those photos that were ruined 17 years ago are almost as good as new. I would highly recommend the Epson FastFoto not only for the restoration feature but also for the speed and quality of the scanned photos. Because the FastFoto also scans the backs of the pictures I also have the names and dates of the photos to easily share them with family and friends. I also love that you can scan papers and receipts so easily. I have used my printer to scan receipts and it takes forever. With the Epson FastFoto it is done in seconds.

This is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. The FastFoto 640 was very easy to setup and use right away. Download the software, install and within minutes you can start scanning your photos. The 300dpi setting is very fast. A stack of 30 photos are scanned in about 1 minute. This a huge time saver compared to flatbed scanning. The quality is solid and the auto enhancements are welcomed feature. The 600dpi setting is slower but still much faster than a regular flatbed scanner. The best use of the FastFoto 640 is to get all of the old photos digitized so that they can shared. Photos sitting in a shoe box don't get looked at very often. It would be great if Epson could develop a similar product for 35mm slides or negatives. Even after all the photos are scanned the FastFoto 640 is still very worthwhile to have since it will scan front and back of 8 ½ x 11 documents at the same time. Although the price is on the high end, overall the FastFoto 640 is great device.

If you are like me and have boxes of old photos that are just waiting to be digitized the Epson FastFoto Scanner is a lifesaver! I was very excited to receive this product to test and review as I have looked at and researched photo scanners recently. I have had Epson products in the past and have always been happy with their quality, and the FastFoto Scanner is certainly no exception. The product is light and very well sized, it`s not big at all but isn`t small enough that it doesn`t feel sturdy. The set up is incredibly easy, I took it out of the box, assembled a few pieces, plugged it in and downloaded the necessary software on my computer ( a Mac). I was scanning photos less than 10 minutes later. I was so pleased with not only the speed with which this scanner scans in photos, but with the quality of the scans as well. The organization system is smart, I had my photos organized and was able to label groups that were scanned in together. I found this so helpful and easy, and again, the quality was great. I like the option to scan in at both 300 dpi and 600 dpi as well. The scan menu is simple and easy to configure so that your scans come out just how you`d like them to. One feature that I really liked was the ability to stack different sized photos together and have them all scan in. I would make sure that none of your photos are overly bent or stuck together (as old photos can be). I did have one jam because of two photos stuck together, but it was easily cleared and I was back up and running in no time. I haven`t needed to scan in a document yet, but I like that there is the option to download additional software and scan in documents as well. I highly recommend the FastFoto Scanner to anyone who has photos to scan, it can save you so much time with high quality, great results. My parents have brought over their box of photos after seeing how great my scans came out, and want me to get started archiving and scanning theirs in as well!

WOW!!! The Epson FF-640 is a small package packed with a ton of features and boy is it fast!! My children are all teenagers now and last 3-4 years most photos taken on digital camera or phones BUT I had boxes, and boxes of photos in basement. I would always stare at those boxes unsure what to do with them. Getting professional scanning done can cost big bucks and not sure I would want someone looking at all my personal photos. Setup on the FF-640 was quick in simple…i was up and running and under 10 minutes. Now came the big test…..going through all those boxes and get the pictures loaded for scanning. This photo scanner is not like the scanners we all used back in the day when you would scan one picture or item at a time you can do multiple photos and WOW is it fast!!!!! Instantly pulls all the photos into a folder so you can keep everything nice and organized. Best part is i also scanned some important documents, business cards, and receipts as well. Now instead of having a pile of those receipts and documents I can now have a quick and easy way to access them. I was easily loading up 20-25 photos at once to be scanned. The Epson FF-640 definitely exceeded my expectations. Also the overall design is great….Its compact and looks great on my desk. Also allows you download the Epson software which is really easy to use. I have scanned about 500 photos so far in just a few days. Its worth the money and investment to get a scanner like this you wont be disappointed. I actually am going to take all those photos now and create a digital album I can give to all my family members as a gift “This is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review.”

When receiving this product I was a bit skeptical on how good it could be with a higher price tag than most until I used it. This is a must have for anyone who has a lot of pictures stored around the house. When it says it can scan a picture a second, they were not joking. I took a handful of old pictures some in perfect condition, others in slightly poor condition (creases, bends, etc, which I attempted to straighten), It scanned all perfectly. Super fast. The best part is you can organize them by category, event, date, etc. The clarity is also great. I didn't think something that scanned this fast would be able to capture the image quality too. After scanning is complete, they all show up in the preview box. Some pictures were upside down or sideways but with a click of the mouse you can pick and choose which photos need to be turned. It also lets you clean the pictures up with its built in editing software, so even if the original picture was off, the program will correct it including red eye removing. I am very happy with this product and plan to use it for a long time. I am a beta tester and was lucky enough to be a part of this test. This is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. With that being said, If I saw the performance of this product I would have purchased it. First let me get this out of the way, This is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. OK, now that I said that I would like to say I'm being completely honest when I write this. This little scanner is AWESOME. Within a few minutes, which included unpacking, setting up, installing software, I was scanning a stack of photos and done! This is an extremely user friendly photo scanner that is powerful and hard to mess up. I have had a stack of wedding photos for 15 years sitting in a box because I was just too lazy to scan one at a time on my flatbed. A scanner that did not capture the proper quality. Within minutes, I had the photos scanned, enhanced automatically and saved to my computer. The software that the scanner uses allows you to scan the photos at 300 or 600 dpi with the option to auto enhance things such as colors, restoration and red eye. It also gives you the option to scan the original and then make a copy with the enhancements. I did like this so I could pick and choose which version I liked better. Now I know this scanner is not cheap but if you have boxes and album after album of old photos like me then I think it is worth it. I mean all you need to do is load stack of photos into the feeder, SO EASY!!!!!

Full disclosure — I received this scanner free of charge for me to review. This is a potentially very useful device, and pretty easy to use. Assembly out of the box was quite easy. The paper guide is a little precarious until you snap it firmly in place. But overall, assembly is a matter of unpacking everything and pulling off tape and styrofoam, like most electronic devices. Downloading the software package was a little more difficult, as the URL given for the web site was not where the software package was located. With a little bit of digging around in the web site, I was able to find the package and download it. (Which took several minutes, not more than usual for this sort of thing.) Installation was pretty straightforward — the installer created a file for the scans to be saved in, and could be overridden. Scanning was a little complicated and mysterious at first. There were several versions of the software to choose from, and it is still not entirely clear to me which one is supposed to be used. I also discovered, after my first attempt at scanning, that an icon had been placed on the computer’s desktop, and scanning can be done from the menu that appears when you open that. My first attempt let me do a preview scan, which looked fine. Then when I loaded all the pictures in the batch, it scanned them, and I saved them, per the instructions. But I couldn’t find them in the file it claimed to have scanned them to. I changed the format to .pdf (it was initially set to .jpeg) and rescanned the batch. This time they appeared in the proper folder, but there were two versions of each picture. Each pair of scans had one with slightly more contrast than the other. I chose the ones that looked better, and deleted the others. Since the first batch was a set of black and white pictures (from my first birthday, in 1957,) I next tried a few color pictures from a reunion of my college cross-country team. Again, the results included two slightly different versions of each picture. In all cases, the scanning process was very fast. The most time-consuming thing will be picking out the better rendition of the original, and keeping track of where everything has been saved in the computer’s files. This scanner should be just the thing I need to create electronic versions of all the vacation pictures I have taken over the years with my film camera. The unit is quite small — it could be unplugged and stored in a corner or closet, in the relatively sturdy box it came in, when not in use.

This is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. I had boxes of family photos of different sizes that I had attempted to scan on a flatbed scanner to save to my hard drive and create dvd's so I could preserve the memories my family had created. After many starts this project was never finished because it took forever to scan over 5000 photos using this method. Then along came the EPSON fast foto 640. This unit is power packed. From the easy set up to the super easy instructions I was able to get through all 5000+ photos in less than half a day. This unit accepted pictures of different sizes without sticking and jamming. I even scanned old polaroids that are thick with no problem. The scanner has a fantastic color correction feature that really helped with some old faded pictures. And I love that it can also scan the back of photos and preserve the writing on the back of photos, so now I even have my grandparents and parents writing preserved forever. . In the past I had even looked into having these photos put on dvd at a photo lab at the local drug store and the price was not affordable. Even though it may seem that the scanner is expensive it does a great job with ease and truly saved me a ton of money.

I was sent a free Epson FastFoto FF-640. Upon receiving, I was quite easily able to set it up and scan photos quickly. It required another update before I could do documents but this did not prove to be difficult. I am pretty old school and still like to receive a manual when I purchase an item. This did have an abbreviated manual of sorts which I liked. The scanner has proven to be an asset for my home office. My wireless printer, scanner, copier frequently disconnects from the internet which makes it difficult to quickly complete a project if I am required to reload the drivers for the printer. This scanner has a USB cable and the fact that it is not wireless is a plus for me. I can quickly scan a document into my computer and then e-mail that document. So far I have only tested scanning with photos. Since I have a bad habit of keeping most of my photos on my digital devices, I have not really needed to scan photos. However, I tested that for the purpose of seeing how easy or hard, and the test photo was a quick success. This is a great product if you need to scan documents either into your system to save or to e-mail out and it also does a great job with photos. I would recommend this product.
