We debated between the Sony, the JVC, and the Epson, read all the reviews, and finally went to see them at an AV showroom. The Sony looks fabulous, but for 5 times the price of the Epson, that's just not worthwhile. the JVC vs the Epson seems to just be a personal preference, and the JVC is also about twice the price. So for price, performance, and value you can't beat the Epson. The remote lens control is also perfect for switching between 2:35 and 16:9 widescreen and only takes a few seconds. The BluRay upscaling to near 4K (faux-K) looks amazing on a 135" screen, and even on economy mode the screen brightness is fantastic. In a dark room on full brightness it's almost overwhelming...

Had this projector for a while, very good blacks. Excellent brightness and cinema like picture. Now upgrading to the newest version, the 5050ub.

The Bottom Line: Two standout projectors that can reproduce both 1080 and 4K content. The Epson will know doubt handily outsell the JVC, because I believe it will appeal more, to sports and TV lovers, and even for some/many? big time movie fans. For the hard core fanatics, demanding great black levels, of course the JVC has a real advantage. Those folks (which certainly includes me when it comes to movie watching), will have to trade off between the JVC’s blacks and the advantage in perceived sharpness of the Epson. No matter which of these two you pick, you will almost certainly be thrilled, especially when you consider how great these two are for their price.

if you don't want to pay 12-13K for a 4K projector, you should buy this one. AMAZING picture quality and it runs really quiet.

This is my second Epson projector as it replaced a 5030ub. It cannot be overstated that this line of projectors is unmatched for multi use viewing. Ours is hung in a game room with two sets of windows and even with all of the lights on you can still see the screen clearly. So if you don't have a dedicated movie room this is your projector. Amazing colors in total darkness as well. Sports are fantastic. Movies are engulfing. Just buy it and thank me later.

This is my first projector and was very excited to purchase based on reviews. It has met all my expectations. The image offset is a great feature because I couldn't set my projector directly behind the screen. Amazing image quality and the 4k rendering is fantastic. Strongly recommend to anyone in the market for a projector

Yes this is not a true 4k projector. It mimmicks 4k by using the 3D chips inside. Does it looks as close to 4k as you can for the price? Yes!!! For several thousand dollars cheeper than a true 4k projector this is the best!! Picture quality is bright and sharp. I love it!! And I have had several friends install this in their home theaters and couldn’t be happier.

Wow! Just built a house with a dedicated media room. Bought this projector and i can say that I am not disappointed. After reading all of the reviews I could find online it was clear this was the perfect choice.

I bought to replace an aging home theater projector. The picture is simply awesome. Compared to the native 4K projectors in store, I think this Epson beats the JVC and equals the Sony.

Long story short: 4th projector that won’t turn on (Super Bowl Sunday). I’m done with Epson in all facets. They beat me out of $2500. It’s time for me to turn the page and use another manufacturer. Long Story: 5 stars on picture, 4 stars customer service, Zero stars on quality. The fact I used it for 6 weeks under less use than I would a normal TV in a nice cool room before it failed, I cannot give it a full 5 stars overall. I have to take yet another day off of work (in addition to the many days I took off of work receiving all my other home theater items) to receive the replacement. Also, they are sending me a refurbished unit in trade of my 6 week old unit and I've had bad experiences with other refurbished products with disgusting animal hair, human hair, scratches, filth on them. I hate getting something older and used when I paid for brand new. I would understand if it was a year old, but 6 weeks? It hasn't even had time to let dust settle on it. I wasn't happy with the $2,000.00 hold on my charge card when I am going on vacation a few days after my replacement is due to arrive. Otherwise, their customer service is OK. They're sending a refurbished one right away. Today is Thursday and they say I'll have the replacement by Monday or Tuesday. As far as the picture. I sit roughly 13 feet from a 120 inch projection in a fully light managed room, onto a ceiling paint screen, and I cannot see the pixels. The quality and color is as good, if not better than a theater. It's a nice looking unit and easily ceiling mounted. It's pretty quiet when in the 2 low power consumption modes. The 3rd mode with unfettered power consumption is pretty loud without much benefit. It's just a hair brighter. HDR isn’t that great on this unit because it’s not bright enough and really makes the image difficult to watch. It’s kind of like an iPad with the brightness turned way down. I prefer watching without HDR. The motorized lens shifting is great. It has a lot of range shifting up/down/left/right and can adjust/compensate for not being perfectly level with its lense adjustments. All in all, great picture for the money but I have never had something in this price range just crap out before, ever (add to that, it’s failed multiple times). I hope this isn't an indication of the remainder of my 2 year warranty (update, looks like it will be). That being said, (edit here, I once said “go ahead and buy the unit, now I’m not so sure). Maybe you'll never have an issue and I usually never do. It seems others have reliable units. I guess my luck just ran out. Update: Received my REFURBISHED unit and the picture it is projecting is unacceptable. When I pulled it from the box the lens shutter was open! I was assured that the refurbished units went through many quality tests before they are sent out. I went through all possible color adjustments and it's still projecting red in one of the corners (See photo). I've had it with this. I've been trying to get my home theater in working order for 7 weeks now and if it's not one thing it's another and this is just one more thing to irritate me. I just want to watch a movie in my finished theater and I'll be going onto the 3rd projector in 7 weeks. Update #2 I got a NEW unit overnight and all is well for now. I would have given this unit 5 stars had I not had to return 2 units within 7 weeks and make arrangements to receive a replacement unit twice during my working hours, having to disconnect and remount multiple times, make phone calls and go through the usual routine of plugging cables in various components and sources only to finally have an American get on the phone after 45 minutes, take 1 look at the picture I sent and say "Yeah that's a bad unit". At that time I asked to be sent a new unit and he said he would try. He delivered on my request for a new one so that made me happier. So time will tell. Maybe I'll get through the rest of my 2 year warranty without an issue. ANOTHER UPDATE! My NEW unit that I received in mid June succumbed to the same failure as the first projector. It’s early December 4th today so it made it roughly 5 months under moderate use. I hadn’t turned it on for about a week and I wanted to watch a movie tonight and the thing is fried again, it won’t turn on, flashing blue lights. I don’t know what to do at this point. I’m going to have to switch out the unit AGAIN. I’ll have to battle them for another NEW (not refurbished) unit, AGAIN! Or do I just ask for a refund and spend more money on a different note trustworthy brand? So annoyed right now... I really like everything else about the projector it just kills me that it doesn’t seem likely to last more than a few months as I will be going on my 4TH projector in about 7 months?! That’s just ridiculous... I’m really a fair person. I’m hard to get worked up. I would have LOVED to give this 5 stars, I just can’t due to multiple unit failures. If the next replacement last me 10 years, the best rating I could give would be 3 stars because of the quality. ANOTHER UPDATE: Unit 4 just bit the dust! I never even changed a lamp on this frickin thing and the piece of junk just dies! I’m done! I’ve had it!

This projector is the best one out there for the price. Very surprised at the clarity of the picture. Two thumbs up on this product.

We have this projector in our movie room and the brightness allows us to keep a light on in the room and still see the screen easily. I could easily see this projector being used in a living room. Perfect for games as the brightness allows for plenty of ambient light. For the price you cannot buy better.

The epson 5040ub definitely seems to be the best projector on the market outside of the native 4K projectors. Very easy setup due to the amazing lens shift with this projector. Great lumen output allows it to be used Day or night. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a great projector without making the jump to native 4k

This projector is absolutely a powerhouse. Picture looks just like a regular television. I have a 120 inch grey screen and I have to say I am completely impressed. Recommended for anyone able to afford the higher price.
