Great except for wifi

Not bad for a portable
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When it works, it works well. Nice that you can save scans as Word or Powerpoint documents. But I still can get it connected to my wireless printer. Instructions for connecting wirelessly are misleading unless you read the manual and not the quick installation instructions. Difficult to get documents aligned properly in the ADF. Wouldn't rely this as my primary scanner. Good on the road or in a pinch. Battery seemed to run out quickly.

An awesome portable scanner
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Before i begin my review, i wanted to mention that this is a review for the EPSON ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and write an honest review. The product quality is very good, the scanner is very handy and easy to operate. The initial installation and setup was a charm, it did not take me more than a few mins to setup the EPSON scanner. The instructions were well documented. Before i go into some of the areas of concern that i have noticed, i wanted to highlight the positive aspects of the product. Connecting the EPSON scanner to my WiFi was a quick process, the WPS functionality came in handy. Once setup was done, i tested scanning with multiple stacks of papers (single sided and duplex), if you have setup the smart phone app, the scanning of the documents is very quick and i love that. The scanner is able to run on its own battery - which is a plus, i can easily disconnect the power cable from the scanner and move it around when i need to do my scanning (and i scan receipts/bills a lot). Some things that i see lacking are, the EPSON app for the smart phone works, but it is missing a lot of functionality, in my opinion. There is a lot that can be added, in terms of features like being able to setup a workflow in the scanner app, when you have scanned, you want to save the images in the scanner app AND the camera roll (i use iPhone), or save the image to camera roll and email it to predefined email receipients or upload it to cloud drives like OneDrive or Google Drive or BOX etc. I must clarify that in its current implementation there is a way to email, upload the image to cloud, but what is esentially missing is a workflow that you can set, which automatically does what you have set up. There are other apps that i have used, which support such funcationality. To make this product truly an exceptional experinece, i think ESPON needs to incorporate this in their app. OCR should have been an inbuilt functionality, that is missing. If you are using the desktop app, there is advanced functionality which allows the user to set advanced options, like set paper skew (but for that you have to have a setting lower than 600 dpi - even if you have set 600 dpi you cannot set Correct Document Skew, it gives an error. If you drop the setting to 400 dpi, it works. I think there is some work reuqired there. Setting your predefined File name does not allow a user selectable naming, but its not a biggie. The over all weight of the scanner is slightly on the heavy side, so you cannot carry it with you if you are going on a business trip, but that is fine for my use case. i will give it a solid 4 star rating. EPSON has done a remarkable job with this scanner and i will most definitely recommend it to buyers.

Great scan quality, simple setup, great scanner!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Superb quality scans, speed and setup This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. I have two other Epson scanners, one of which I have had for over 10 years now and the other for 5 years and both still work excellent! So being asked to review a new, portable Epson scanner was a no brainer for me. First off, the size, including the battery is quite small at 11½ x 3½ x 3 inches. Sliding the grey lever on the front opens up the sheet feeder which can handle up to 20 sheets of 2 sided paper, business cards, whatever. The caveat is that it can not be something bound as this is a page scanner. But it's small size hides it's excellent build quality and software and features. Setup is so simple. Plus the scanner into a power outlet for both power and to charge the battery. Run the software and follow the extremely simple and easy to understand set up instructions. You can set this up to scan via a usb cable, direct wireless or put it on your wireless network. I chose the wireless network and it programs via the WPS button on your Wireless Router. It's disgustingly simple and fast and easy. Once it's charged, unplug from the cord if you need to and place where it's convenient and start scanning. Open the software, set your resolution (I prefer 300 psi) and place what you want to scan in the tray. I thought wrong that to scan the back, I'd have to put my paper back in the tray, but to my surprise it scans both sides at the same time and very quickly and accurately at that. I highly recommend this scanner. It's easy to use, fast and accurate. I scan multiple papers multiple times per week and this scanner is so much more convenient, handier adn faster and scans duplex on one pass vs my other two scanners. It's earned a place on my desk. You'll LOVE it! Plus you can scan to Google Drive, Drop Box or nearly anyplace on your computer, device or cloud. Yes, it scans to phones and tablets too and it's just as easy to set up and use.

Batt. powered and portable scanner; so-so software
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. To provide some background, I own a lot of computer equipment, flash my routers' firmware, build my own servers, have owned many scanners, both Epson and Canon; in few words, I'm fluent in tech. The scanner is pretty obvious to unpack and open up. I quickly downloaded the software from the Epson site facing the same, usual dread I always encounter with scanners: it installed many pieces of software on your computer and I was left to ponder whether I did really need those to operate the scanner. For a Mac, it was Document Capture, Epson Scan 2, EpsonNet Config, EPSON Software Updater, Epson Scan 2 Utility, User Guide and Uninstaller, and - optional - also ABBYY FineReader Sprint and Presto! BizCard 7. I hardly used the quick install guide, just when in doubt making sure it was on USB mode rather than Wi-Fi, and opted to experiment quickly with over the wire config. Scanning pages in AFD (autofeed document) mode was really fast using Document Capture. There was no jam and scan quality was more than sufficient even at low res. You can trigger the start of the scan on either scanner or comp side, or by inserting pages. It was also very easy to create scanning configs that automatically uploaded the doc to the Cloud (Good Drive in my case but there are other possibilities). It is worth mentioning though that Cloud uploads require your comp to be up as a temporary scan is first created on your comp, then uploaded, and then removed (I believe this is configurable if you want to retain a local copy). Going wireless was a bit of a pain. I started in wired mode with the intent to set the wireless config, and then go wireless. Well it does not work that way and embarrassingly I had to read the manual. You first place the scanner in AP mode, set your comp to connect to the scanner's Wi-Fi, use then EpsonNet Config to configure the wireless, switch the scanner to Wi-Fi mode, reconnect your comp to your Wi-Fi, and then are able to discover your scanner. One comment about the manual: instructions were laid out over multiple pages. Somehow, I open the manual from one of the apps which directed to a web page. No need to tell you I was unable to read the next page when connected to the scanner's Wi-Fi :-(. Another thing you need to be aware of is you need to use a different software, Epson Scan 2, when scanning in wireless mode; Document Capture just does not work. Another thing you need to be aware of is that such a small scanner does not have any display. It means you do not have the ability to select a destination computer for scan over Wi-Fi like you could on much larger scanners. This means that not only your comp is up and running, but Epson Scan 2 is also ready. Unlike on USB mode, you need to trigger the scan from within Epson Scan 2. I intend on creating a small virtual machine with the Epson software and driver loaded, have Epson Scan 2 up and running there, and have the house guest connect to it for them to scan docs as needed to a common Cloud account. It will prevent them to have to install the all software package and config everything, meanwhile they’ll benefit of the scanner portability. It I was to summarize my impressions of the Epson ES-300W scanner, I'd say the following. The scanner is solid, simple, battery operated, and can go wireless, thus portable. It is a bit bigger than I'd wished for to bring on a trip and scan my expense receipts while traveling. It scans quickly and the output documents exhibit the same solid quality Epson has got us used to. I just dislike the software and this for few reasons: 1) I don’t understand why config and utilization is not available under one roof, 2) I don’t understand why I have to deal with 2 similar yet different scanning software packages depending on usage mode (USB or Wi-Fi), 3) the overall design and UX is way, way dated and it shows. In fairness, I think it is the plight of many scanner manufacturers; maybe they all OEM the software from the same shop.

This is the Swiss Army knife of portable scanners.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the Swiss Army knife of portable scanners, very compact, but full of features. It fits in my backpack for travel, but once I open it up, it can do everything I needed. It has page support for feeding multiple documents, an adjustable paper feed and even a dedicated slot for scanning business cards. I liked that it is fast at scanning pages and does two-sided scanning! There is no long wait while it scans. The document feeder is a big time saver too. I would like to get a case or cover for it to protect it while traveling. I did have a little trouble setting it up to my network since my Google Wifi does not allow WPS connection. Once I did get it connected, it has been solid for scanning. I have been able to scan to my laptop, Android phone and iPhone. I find it very useful to be able to scan via USB, my Wifi network (to any device on my network) or directly to it via its own Wifi access point. I can be pretty much anywhere, pull it and my phone out and be scanning documents. It charges via its own AC adapter, but also via a USB cable that was included. I have it on my desk for scanning documents and keep it connected via USB, but can quickly disconnect it and take it to a meeting to scan documents. This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review.

Excellent lightweight portable scanner
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. I have owned several scanners in the past and this one has got to be one of the best. The size is perfect for easy portability and the wireless function allows you to scan whenever you are connected to wifi. You also always have the option of connecting via USB cable. Set up was very simple and the speed and quality of the scan was very very good. Downloading the software was painless and you have several ways to save scans including email, to your documents folder, or dropbox/google drive. Remember that in order to scan, pages must be face down and turned over. I highly recommend this scanner by Epson if you are looking for a compact scanner that doesn't skimp on quality, speed, ease of use, and a variety of ways to connect.

Fast and portable
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. The ES-300W scanner is a real gem, and is perfect for at home or on the go. It's fairly light-weight and compact, and scans lightning fast. If there's one negative mark against this product, it's the setup. I first tried to set up the scanner via my aging desktop computer. I ran through the setup program fine until the point that it asks how you want to connect. I chose the manual wireless setup option as I don't have WPS on my wireless, and at that point it wan't able to continue due to the install erring out. I decided to then use the supplied USB cable, and that allowed me to complete the setup. Once that completed, I tried to scan a document, but when selecting the scanner it would close out the program. Frustrated with that, I tried the setup on my laptop via the USB cable and the setup went without a hitch, so there may have been an issue computer related with my desktop install attempt. Next, I wanted to try and get the scanner on my wireless. To do that, I had to connect direct via wireless, run the EpsonNet Config program, and configure the device with my wireless network settings. At the end of the day, that whole process was a little tedious and potentially daunting for the non-technically minded. With the installation out of the way, I gave it a test run of 15 pages. I was shocked at how fast it scans, and the quality was great to boot. It scans way faster than my Workforce all-in-one flatbed. In the time it takes to scan one document on the flatbed, I could easily pump out 10+ pages on the ES-300W! As far as travel goes, it does fit easily into my backpack, and doesn't add too much weight. When closed up, it folds into a nice little package that's easy to carry around. What's also really great is that it has a really small footprint. Also, the battery seems to last a good long time, though I don't have exact numbers. I have got a good week out of use without having to charge it just by powering it off when not in use. Overall, minus the initial setup, this scanner has been excellent. It's so fast, I no longer use the flatbed scanner if I don't have to. The portability is excellent, and great for those on the go. I must say that I really do like this product and would highly recommend it it the potential setup snags don't scare you off.

A fast and somewhat portable scanner
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. To begin with let’s address the positive aspects of this scanner. First off, initial setup isn’t too difficult via USB (wifi is a different story, see below) and the quick start guide is pretty clear for setup. As for scanning, it scans very quickly especially at lower DPI and can also handle fairly sizeable stacks of paper (~20 pages or so). It also handles a wide variety of paper widths and types as I have used it for standard 8.5”x11” paper pages and 4”x6” photos. The quality of the scanned images/pictures even at lower (200 dpi) is really quite nice for both color and black/white pages. Additionally, it also does an excellent job of scanning cards of various thickness from business cards to driver’s licenses. There are also a significant amount of customization available when combined with the Epson documentscan desktop application. Now for the cons. While this scanner is technically portable is has a couple of issues here. It is fairly heavy at almost 3 lbs and shape makes it a little bulky as instead of longer and thinner Epson has decided to go with shorter and thicker which make for issues when packing it. The other major con is the setup, especially the wifi. Scanning via usb is the simplest way to scan documents with this scanner and I had little issue with this, the problems begin when trying to use it’s wireless capabilities. I had zero luck getting the scanner set up via WPS, while I am not entirely sure it’s not router’s fault, I kept on getting the same error every time I tried to set it up via WPS. I did manage to get the AP wireless connection to go work after some effort. While it is possible to get the scanner to work via AP wifi, the Epson DocumentScan app is quite frustrating.

Best document scanner I have ever used
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. After a little over a week of use, I can say that this is an excellent product. The scanner ships in a compact box and is well-packaged with the AC adapter, power cable, USB cable, and quick start guide. Initial setup was quick and easy, it connected to my WiFi network without any issues. The iOS and Android apps (Epson DocumentScan) install and discover the scanner easily, and both my Windows and Mac laptops were able to see the scanner on the network. Basic functionality works without any additional software, however for more advanced features you'll want to download the Epson Document Capture software from the support website. One quick note: Some of the instructions and links provided in the quick start guide aren't accurate, just go straight to the epson.com site under support and choose Drivers & Downloads and enter the model #, it will take you to the correct downloads. In terms of scanning, this scanner surprised me with how fast it was. It scans both sides simultaneously and produces excellent quality scans at the rated speed. I fed 20 pages of double-sided text documents through it at 600x600 and it scanned them in about 45 seconds. I am very impressed. I scanned everything from business cards and receipts to hand-drawn artwork, recipe cards, and photographs; everything performed very well. If there is anything to complain about, I would say that photo quality isn't the best (even though it is quite good), but this scanner is really more geared toward business uses and it excels in those areas. The scanner is compact and can run off the AC cord, USB power, or battery. I was able to get about 6 hours of usage from a single charge, which is plenty to keep using the scanner for about a week without having to plug it in, which makes it great for mobile use. The scanner is compact and not terribly heavy, but I probably wouldn't want to carry it around with my laptop 100% of the time. Before using the ES-300W, my primary scanner was an Epson flat-bed, and the ES-300W surpasses my old scanner in every way. It is the only scanner I will be using now.

An impressive little gadget
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a review for the ES-300W Wireless Portable Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review. Having said that, I depend on reviews to help me decide what to buy so the following is my honest opinion. This isn’t my first rodeo. I own several larger Epson scanners and an “all in one” Workforce Pro printer. Installation of the ES-300W wasn’t as easy as I’ve experienced with other devices but, to be fair, I decided to use WiFi which can be more problematic than using a direct connection using the included USB 3/2 cable. An example of the complexity is that the only way I’ve found to run the installer is to re-run the entire software package installer. So, if your scanner installation fails (mine did several times), you can’t rerun the device installer without reinstalling all the software again. This isn’t a problem but does waste time. Then, when I tried installing the scanner on my WiFi network, I had an option of using WPS or not. When electing not to use WPS, the install failed each time. When I finally agreed to WPS (which my router provides), the installation went smoothly and quickly. One other issue I noticed is that the quick start guide and installation screens don’t appear to show the location of at least one of the scanner’s indicator lights you need to watch for during the WiFi install. If you guess right, as I apparently did, you’ll be good to go. Once I got everything running properly, Epson’s server indicated there was new firmware for the scanner as well as some optional software available. This happens because Epson installs the “Epson Software Updater” on your computer. This runs in the background and watches for updates for any Epson devices and software on your network and/or computer. I installed the update as well as the optional programs and this went perfectly. A few minutes later, I was ready to begin scanning. Once you get this device installed, you simply open Document Capture Pro (if you’re running Windows 10, just type Document Capture Pro in the search box at the bottom left on your screen and then click on it once Windows has found the program). Click the scan button and “presto”, the page feeds even faster than on my giant Epson printer and the resolution of the scan is remarkable. It couldn’t be easier, faster or deliver a better result. This device does exactly what it should and does it flawlessly. If I were in the market for a stand-alone scanner (as opposed to an all-in-one), it would be hard to resist the ES-300W. It takes up almost no space on your desk (or anywhere within reach of your WiFi network) and you can throw it (well, gently) in your backpack and carry it with you. Depending on how much scanning you’ll do, you may not even need to bring along the power adapter. There have been plenty of times when I was away from the office and wished I’d had a scanner. Having an almost tiny scanner, battery operated and using Wifi, means I can put it anywhere and still get the job done. No wires, no clutter, no sweat. My wife came into my office and asked to scan something. I handed her the scanner and said, “Here, take this to the kitchen and start feeding pages”. I like this gadget and wouldn’t hesitate to buy it.

A Simply Fantastic Device
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Epson ES-300W just happens to be the first portable scanner that I have owned, and am amazed by the results. The quality of this portable scanner is simply fantastic. The first thing that I scanned, zoomed through the scanner so fast, I blinked and almost missed it. I have not seen anything scan that fast besides the equipment at the copy & print stores. Upon viewing the file on my laptop, I was very impressed with the scan quality. It surely beat the scan quality of my All-In-One printer. Once I started playing with the settings, I saw that I didn’t even have the resolution set at the best quality either. I thought that this thing would have been seriously bulky due to having a battery backup, but it is very compact for having so many features. It has an adjustable paper feed, as well as a pop-up full sized page support. The adjustable paper feed allowed me to scan a stack of receipts for a expense report in no time. The scanner also has a business card slot that pulls the card in and back out at the same spot. This leaves the card un-bent, that way I can put it back in my card stack. My work requires me to travel often for days, weeks, or even over a month at a time, and this will allow me to easily scan my expenses & reports without the need of relying on a hotel business center. This Epson ES-300W scanner will defiantly be staying in my laptop bag for now on!
