I have an HP Multi-Function Laser Printer that does a decent job with most things, but I've found that the auto document feeder sometimes puts a line down some of my scans. The flatbed scanner portion was fine. I opened doors panels and wiped everything down, but still couldn't find the source of the line.
This Epson ES-500W II Scanner looked very interesting so I grabbed it hoping it would give me more consistent results. Wow, it scans things so fast, I couldn't believe it.
After getting it out of the box, there were a lot of pieces taped down or shut. They really thought of all the different places that might get jostled in shipping and taped it all down. I was impressed at how compact this device is when it is all closed up. It kinda reminds me of a breadbox. When all the trays are opened and pulled to their full positions, it has a decent sized footprint, but most of the time. I will have it on a desk so I don't think I need the full output tray.
Included in the package is a decent USB cable that you can use if you want to keep a wired connection. It can also be useful if you want to connect it to your computer in order to set it up to WiFi and don't want to use the WPS function. I wanted to avoid using this USB cable and did not initially consider that my network settings would frustrate me. There is no ethernet jack, which was mildly disappointing, I would just like the option.
The primary computer I wanted to connect to this scanner is my desktop that is hardwired to my router. My router is a mesh style system so that means my 2.4 and 5 Ghz networks are combined in such a way that the SSIDs are the same and devices are automatically set up on the right network. The problem is that the scanner only works on the 2.4Ghz network.
You need to go to the Epson website and download the Drivers and Utilities Combo Package Installer. You need to also remain online after you start up the process because it downloads all the other utilities needed.
While going through the setup, I chose "Connect via wireless network (Wi-Fi)". I followed the instructions and used WPS. It would attempt to connect and fail with a troubleshooting page. I tried the option "Connect using temporary USB connection (have a USB cable ready)" and connected the USB cable and it still failed.
This is where I realized part of my problem. My desktop was hardwired to my router. So I disconnected the ethernet jack and connected to my wireless network. I figured the scanner would connect and automatically choose the correct network. I was wrong and it failed to connect. So I went into my router settings and chose a different SSID for my 5Ghz network. It still failed. So I got frustrated and exited the setup application entirely and left it alone for a little bit.
I came back with some more patience and started the setup again, determined to get wireless working and with the USB cable connected, as a temporary measure to assist with connecting to my WiFi. I also checked my desktop to make sure it was still connected to the wireless and that it was connected via 2.4 Ghz. The scanner was finally recognized and registered as connected to my WiFi. The rest of the setup went pretty smoothly where it installed the Epson ScanSmart application. I was able to do a quick scan while I had the USB cable still plugged in. I exited the application, disconnected the USB cable and I was able to scan again with the ScanSmart application. I then went back to my router settings, changed my 5Ghz SSID back to my normal network and the scanner was still connected.
So the warning here is if you have a Wireless Mesh network system, be prepared to change the 5Ghz SSID temporarily, make sure your connected computer is connected to the same 2.4 Ghz SSID as you want the scanner on and make sure to exit the setup application completely in order to have as fresh of a start as possible.
Something to note, there can only be 1 computer that is paired to the scanner for the purposes of the One-Touch button on the scanner. Several computers can be set up for the scanner where the computer can initiate the scan.
Scanning documents on this Epson ES-500W II is fast. I mostly dismiss those ppm figures that most printers advertise as I don't think I've ever achieved them. This scanner has changed my mind. I seriously believe the 35 ppm claim.
I've had a stack of receipts on my desk to scan in. Several of these have been jammed in a coat pocket so they aren't pristine. I did the minimal job to smooth some of them out. Surprisingly most of them made it through the scanner without any issue. There were a couple that mis-fed, but clearing the jam was pretty easy. There is a latch button on the top left side and everything seems laid out in an easy to reach fashion. There was one receipt that got caught in the rollers, and thusly was shredded a bit. It was probably the receipt in the worst shape going into the scanner, so I can't blame the scanner for that.
Normal 8.5x11 sheets fly through the scanner without a second thought. Legal sized paper is also a breeze. All document scans are clean and accurate. However, photograph scans are not supported. They will scan quickly, but the colors are blown out. For photographs and books, I'll rely on the flatbed of my Multi-Function Printer.
I tried the Epson Smart Panel app on my phone. As I expected, I was able to scan documents on the ES-500W II and it was sent to my phone. It isn't something I think I will use with any regularity, but it's nice to know I can do it if I ever need it.
Overall, I enjoy the ES-500W II. I prefer using it over my Multi-Function Printer when I don't need the flatbed. The system runs quick and offers fantastic quality scans. My only ask of Epson is to improve the wireless setup.

I have come to appreciate how great these Epson high speed scanners are and the ES-500W II is no exception. This scanner screams through documents. Setup was pretty easy, I did have a minor issue getting it connected to the network, but the install process helped me clear that up and I was up and running in no time. The Epson Smart Panel software for your phone is a very nice app for controlling this scanner and other new Epson products and is a great way to quickly scan and manage documents on the fly. The scan image quality is high even at the default 200dpi, but of course you can bump that up even higher if you don’t mind running the documents a bit slower. This scanner performed well not only with crisp papers, but also folded and different sized paper and receipts making it perfect for entering my expense reports.
Overall, this is another great document scanner from Epson and I am truly impressed with the quality and speed it delivers, even while capturing both sides of the page, as it flies through a stack of papers. Getting this scanner was long over due! I'm so glad that I will be able to get with the 20th century and eliminate al of my paperwork piles. From the get go, taking it out of the box and setting up was a breeze and I am a computer novice so if I can do it anyone can. I've been scanning things like invoice, bill payment receipts, client business cards, gas receipts to name a few things and it is so easy. The scanner do do any size and even 2 sided documents. I'm able to move everything into google drive, dropbox, to name a few. I feel like sky is the limit with this scanner. After I clean up my office, I will have to organize my personal piles of paper too. It has great color, papers don't get stuck and it scans fast.
You have to option to do the old fashioned cord or wifi connection, so just have your wifi password handy and you're good to go. Seems compatible with windows or mac, tablets, and smartphone too. I highly recommend this scanner if you can afford it because it is a lifesaver for any home office. The hardware setup is super simple and easy. Didn’t need the instructions too. I set it up on usb cable and it works really well. I changed to Wi-Fi and and it worked fantastic sending all the scans to my mobile.
The scanner is super quick, accurate, and doesn't miss pages. I love that I can set a folder and file name that I want the document scanned to before starting the scan. It ran 50 pages no problem. Fast duplex scanning to all standard formats like pdf png works great and quiet. It takes a bit of time to install the software on the mobile, but I found this process to be really seamless. The scanner scan at 35 pages per minute as marketed and it doesn't seem to make any difference if you are scanning single sided or double sided, at least I didn't notice any.
You could scan a bunch of pages and place another bunch and can get a single PDF file at the end, which is awesome! No need of stitching files. The software allows for naming of files and select a location to save the file.
I have scanned about 1500 pages so far and haven’t seen any issues so far. Really happy and satisfied with the scanner. I would definitely recommend this to everyone.

Great compact wireless scanner

This compact wireless scanner is a perfect addition to my home office. The software was easy to set up and I didn't encounter any issues connecting the scanner directly to my home's wifi connection without the need for a wired connection.
The scanner also offers scanning via mobile device apps (iOS and Android) which can be useful when you want to get a document directly on to your smartphone.
The scanning software for MacOS was easy to use, and the interface and options seem geared more to the home user than the professional power user, but were still very customizable to my exacting needs.
Overall I would recommend this scanner to anyone who is looking for a wireless scanner. This is a review for the Epson DS-500W II Wireless Duplex Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review.

I received the Epson WorkForce ES-500W II Wireless Duplex Desktop Document Scanner, seems to be very good quality, well made. It is easy to set up, just plug it in, power on, than go to the Epson website to download the needed software, and it’s ready to go. It is also small and compact so it doesn't take up a lot of space.
It scans front and back at the same time and can do up to 35 pages a minute. It has a 50-sheet auto document feeder.
The duplex capability, scanning both sides of the page and then it pops up on the screen, allowing you to then choose where you want to save it ( word, excel, or as a document on your PC is an excellent feature.

I have been working from home since last march and while I will not be going to my office for awhile, I have started to see clients again and picking up documents. I needed like we have at the office that can handle a bunch of sheets at once and keep me productive. This new Epson is exactly what I needed.
I plan on working from home much more even when we get passed Covid and now i don't have to worry about getting documents back to my office. This is Epson is a fantastic addition to my home office.
The packaging was simple, just needed to remove some tape from the scanner and plug it in. It also came with a USB cable which is very important for the setup. The instructions were very basic; you have to plus the usb cable into your pc and then go to the Epson site to download the software. There was no way to setup the scanner without that. The issue that I had is that my primary computer is a MacBook Pro and it would not recognize the scanner when I plugged it in to my dock. Luckily I have a Windows PC and did the setup through there and once I did that, my MacBook finally found the scanner. I am not sure what I would do if I did not have the Windows PC. This was very disappointing and it's the only reason I deducted a star.
Once I got it set up, I was in business and ready to scan. I dropped in a bunch of forms I had just picked up and the Epson scanned them in a couple of seconds and I had them on my MacBook faster than I've seen with other scanners. This is exactly what I needed; fast without paper jam issues.
I scanned papers of different sizes, double sided and one sided, color and black and white, and this scanner performed flawlessly

This scanner is great. I have an all-in-one on my desk already, and it has the ability to scan a multi-page document. But, like a typical all-in-one, even though it has a sheet-feeder, it scans relatively slowly, and it can scan only one side of a page at a time. This Epson 500W II is different. It’s just a scanner, but it scans pages very quickly, and, what I find very helpful, it can tell if some pages in the stack are single-sided while others are double-sided. As the pages pass through, it scans the single side of a single-sided page and both sides of a double-sided page in a single pass through the scanner. I love this!
I frequently scan multi-page documents where all but the first and last pages are double sided. The first page might be a title page, and the last page might be single-sided because the document has an odd number of pages. Before I obtained this Epson, scanning such a document was a somewhat-annoying, several-step process resulting in multiple pdf files that I would have to join to make a single document. All of that is gone with this Epson. I load a document like I described above, press the scan button, and the scanner and accompanying software do the rest. I get one well-scanned document with all pages scanned and in order. Where have you been all my life!
Setup was fast and simple. Connection can be by USB directly to a computer (which is how I use it), wirelessly to your network, or via an ethernet cable to a router. The scanner’s footprint is small, which allows me to put it in a small empty space on my desk, which is helpful. Overall, I highly recommend the Epson ES-500W II scanner.

This is an amazing scanner. I never thought I would have so much fun organizing my piles and stacks of papers I've been putting off. Honestly it took less than a half hour to set up, Before I knew it I was scanning business cards, business receipts, ID badges, and paperwork. The scanner is so smart it knows if a document is 2 sided or not, it skips blank pages and my scans can go to google docs, searchable pdf documents, etc. The color is crisp and vibrant. It scans quickly, and does not jam up.
It is really nice that you can use it via wifi and keep it wherever you want in the vicinity. I used it mainly with my windows laptop but I know I will be able to use it with my ipad, iphone and macbook if needed. I would recommend this product to someone with a small business, or someone that works from home, or even my mom who is obsessed with scanning family pictures. I own two Espon scanners now, this one and the previous version. This scanner scans documents with impressive speed. The speed is actually what sold me on this scanner. I refuse to use my (or any for that matter) printer to scan documents anymore.
Using a printer to scan is so tedious and time consuming. So much so that I would opt to keep physical receipts throughout the year (for taxes, etc.) instead of scanning them. Scanning them was too much work but keeping so many receipts was also inconvenient, and created unnecessary clutter. But NOW, shoooot. Put a stack of papers/receipts in the feed, get the app ready and hit scan. And in no time this thing scans and shoots them through and out into the tray. I have recommended this scanner to everyone in my immediate family.

I scan a lot of music, and this scanner does a great job running through multiple pages of sheet music with ease. The quality is also above average, compared to my previous scanner. Documents can be saved as PDFs, which is my preferred format for sending scans to others. It also handles multiple pages sizes well, even in a single scan. One feature that I didn’t even know I needed is the auto duplexing --- it will scan both sides of a page, without having to reload. I didn’t realize how often I did this, until the Epson started taking care of it for me. Photos also scan quite well, with good color reproduction. It’s not designed as a full-time photo scanner though, so keep that in mind. Get a purpose-built photo scanner if that’s your main use. I do have certain circumstances where I need to scan multiple photos into one scan, so my trusty flatbed scanner will be sticking around for that, as well as for any bound books or thick items I need to scan.
Setup took a little longer than I thought it should. I had to re-start the install process a couple of times. My WiFi is also fairly locked down, with separate vlans for IoT and work, so there was a bit of tweaking needed to get the printer to talk with my network correctly.
Overall, this is a decent scanner for the price, although you may need to keep you flatbed scanner around for certain use cases.

I tried out the Epson WorkForce ES-500W II as part of a beta test. I really didn't expect much until I read what the scanner could do. I was ecstatic that I could perform mobile scanning from my phone. This was extremely helpful when I am not at my desk. The photos and documents I scanned both from the actual scanner and from my Note 10 were crystal clear and quickly uploaded. I even scanned some old WWII aerial photos and the color or lack of. You couldn't tell it was scanned. “This is a review for the Epson ES-500WII Document Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review.”
