This is great for scanning letters, documents , letters and so much more. You can set it up for double sided scanning and it even skips blank pages . This is perfect for my everyday needs , It scans everything very quickly . Getting it setup and ready to go was a pain though. My biggest issue was the software, it's ok . At first I constantly lost connection when connected to wifi , so I had to turn everything off and back on several times. After that it was good to go .
With this Epson scanner I just load the paper and set the destination to where I want to scan it . I love that it's also wireless , I can use this product from the app on my phone , when I'm not near my computer. So far I haven't experienced any paper jams . The touchscreen is was to navigate everything quickly. The only thing I haven't tried so far is scanning directly to a USB memory drive without having to use my computer . I'm pretty sure I will need to sooner or later , that's a cool feature . Overall I'm very satisfied with this amazing scanner and it doesn't take up much counter space. This is a review for the Epson Workforce Es-580W Wireless Duplex Touchscreen Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review .

I have WIFI but don't have access to the router, so needed to upgrade to a scanner that had a touchscreen and this did the job. It was easy to understand how to get it setup, and the scanning process is easy. You have to set the dpi to get sharper scans since it defaults to 200 dpi and documents look a lot better at 600 dpi. Easy to change with the software.

An Overall Very Good Office Scanner

More people than ever are working from home right now, and with that involves having to do things like scan documents to send to coworkers and/or clients. While many all-in-one printers have scan functions, they may be slow to use, may not allow for many sheets at a time, or may not have the ability to scan two-sided documents. Enter the Epson Workforce ES-580W dedicated scanner.
Epson now sells a variety of scanners, from portable models, to deluxe wireless desktop models like the ES-580W, and several in-between. These scanners are for people who typically need to scan larger jobs (up to 100 pages via the paper holder), or double-sided documents quickly and easily. The unit itself is smaller than the typical printer, at just under 12 inches wide by just over 8 inches deep. A paper holder tray attaches to the back and extends several inches so you can stack your scan jobs on it, and it feeds the pages down, through the machine, and out onto a paper catch tray on the front. A 4.3 inch touch screen on the front allows you to do many functions on their own without needing a computer, but software can be downloaded to give you ultimate control over your scans and scanner settings.
Many will use this to scan directly into a desktop or laptop, but with Apple or Android apps, you can also scan wirelessly into a tablet or your smart phone as well. Options are also included to scan to a USB drive directly on the machine, or, scan to any number of common cloud services, email, or convert scans into editable Microsoft Word/Excel documents. You can of course, connect it directly to a computer via USB cable (included), too. In other words, if you need to do something with a scan, most likely, the 580W can do it.
Installation was admittedly a bit, well, “quirky”. The Epson Scansmart software is the most common one you’ll use, and after downloading it and setting up the initial setup screens on the scanner, I had a hard time getting the scanner to “see” my computer(s) even though wifi showed strong on the unit itself. The computers would activate the scanner from the software to the scanner, but the scanner could not find the computers on it’s screen to scan from it to them in the reverse order. Trial and error led me to a not-so-obvious way to choose the scanner from the software and somehow this told the scanner the computer was now there, and it would work in reverse, etc. Quite confusing, and one of only two negative marks I’ll give this device. But once you figure it out, you’ll be able to navigate around to using the machine.
Once working, the scanner worked fine. Scans zipped through the machine incredibly fast, scanning on both sides, and appearing on the software screen to be saved or sent where I needed them to go. As a matter of fact, via the settings, I actually switched it to “slow” which is still fast, and I found yielded slightly better scan results. You can of course, change the scan resolution from it’s default of 200 dpi (dots per inch) down to 75dpi, or all the way up to 1200dpi. Do remember that the higher the dpi, the sharper your scans, but the larger your file sizes will be once scanned! Most will again, probably save the file(s) to their computers to use or send manually, but you can set things up to send to a variety of locations from the Epson screen. You can also download the “Epson Smart Panel” mobile app on your Android or Apple phone or tablet, and so long as they are connected on the same wifi network as the scanner, scan directly into the mobile app so you can save and send documents via your phone or tablet. The app is more basic than the computer software, but gets the job done.
You can send items directly from the scanner using the touch screen controls to your mobile computer/devices as well once they are set up and again, if they are on the same network/wifi as the scanner.
While scanners like this are primarily designed to do documents, the ES-580W actually CAN do photograph scanning as well. Photo scans were decent – detail was ok but the dynamic range (details in shadow and very bright areas) falls a bit short as does fine detail, but for general photo storage and archiving I think most will be happy with this as a side function of this scanner.
Aside from the quirky software, I have one other gripe, and that’s the omission of a dust cover for the scanner, or any way to fold the paper tray down and over the top as to cover the top paper opening. With a top loading design like this, dust, pet hair, and other air cooties will quickly drift down into the scanning area, dirtying up your scans. The scanner has something in the software to detect this but really, it will lead to you having to air blow it out frequently to keep your scans clean. Epson really should include a basic plastic cover for these for this purpose! In the meantime, put one together yourself to keep it clean inside.
Other than the two gripes though, I really like the 580W. It’s very handy in today’s at-home working environment, but will work in an office as well if you’re lucky enough to be able to actually go into work, too. It’s fast, makes good scans, and will save you time once you get the hang of it, especially for large scan projects up to 100 pages. I recommend it. If you really don’t need the wireless/wifi aspect to it, check out the similar Epson models that connect directly to your computer via USB, that offer many of the same functions at a reduced price. Recommended.

Much Improved and Independent Scanner

I am moderately familiar with Epson scanners. Our company provides us the DS-530 models. I absolutely love them, and they are big improvement over similar models from other "big name" brands. The biggest limitation of that model is that it only connects via USB.
In a general sense, the Epson scanners of this type are extremely quick, can do 2-sided scans in a single pass, and are loaded with configuration options to get your scan looking the way you want it and saved to the location you want it (at least on your computer).
I knew from the description that this scanner went well beyond the boundaries of just scanning to the device it's connected to over USB. You can scan to a computer, to a network folder, to a portable device (such as a thumb drive or portable hard drive), to Cloud accounts (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Evernote, and Box), or scan and email yourself (or someone else) the document(s). Even better, once fully configured, you could set this scanner up anywhere you want, as you no longer need to have a computer nearby. Well, almost. I had some trouble, but I'll explain.
The scanner took less than 5 minutes to set up (once I got all of the packaging undone and the shipping tape removed from the device. I literally plugged in the power cable, turned the unit on, tapped the screen where the Wi-Fi symbol was, input my Wi-Fi password, and I was good to go. The software needed on your computer must be downloaded from the website (no CD included). It installs drivers and the ScanSmart software. This can be used to to make an incredible number of setting changes, and then launch the scan job.
I did have one problem with this scanner that I have not been able to solve. Scanning to a computer directly from the scanner is one of the options. However, I could not get my computer to appear in the list when selecting this scanning option, even after a couple of reboots of both devices. The touchscreen does display a message that the receiving computer must have ScanSmart installed (which of course, I do). However, I was able to launch a scan from the ScanSmart software on that computer.
I was also able to very easily scan to a thumb drive (it has a USB drive in the back for this) and to my Box account. Because I chose the option, the scanner created an "Epson Connect" folder in my Box account, so I could quickly find my scanned document. To me, this makes the scanner infinitely more useful than any other one I have used, including the one provided by my company. I can scan my documents to my cloud account, and then access them from anywhere with any device in order to organize them. I could set the scanner up in my kitchen because I don't need a computer to do this.
One of my favorite features of this scanner (and most Epson models) is the ability to "skip blank pages". So if you have a stack of pages where some are 2-sided and others are not, you can select this option and the single-sided pages will have the blank side removed from the batch. A HUGE time-saver!
Even the touchscreen display is customizable. I have included photos of some of those options. You will also notice a preset button These can be used to program a very specific task, such as "scan in color to my Box account with 2-sided scanning, skipping blank pages, and correct the document skew." That entire configuration is now saved as one of the presets. Another HUGE time-saver!
This is very easy to use scanner with a very small footprint. It has a collection tray that folds up under the scanner, so when not in use, the scanner could easily fit on a table or bookcase that doesn't have much depth. The number of features may be a bit overwhelming, but once you explore them, you will quickly find which ones benefit you the most. I am very satisfied with this scanner and have no excuses to not start digitalizing all of the paper in my life!

The first thing I noticed upon unboxing the Epson WorkForce ES-580W Wireless Duplex Touchscreen is that the scanner comes with a 4-foot USB Cable. I’ve noticed most computer devices do not include a USB cable at all. The scanner was well packed and held up to any rough shipping and handling. The scanner came in 2 pieces; the top document holder, and the scanner itself. The document holder has 2 spring loaded clips for easy attachment. The document holder, along with the document catcher, has telescoping pieces to hold legal sized documents.
One thing to note is this scanner does not come with any software disks. On step 3 of the quick start guide, it instructs you to visit Epson.com and download the Scanning Software & Drivers Installation Combo. You also have the option to just download the Driver Installation Pack if you already have a favorite scanning software. I first connected the scanner to Wifi using the scanners large screen, then downloaded the Software & Driver Combo on my iMac. The install & setup wizard is self-guided with clear instructions. Once everything was installed the scanner was good to go.
I would like to complement Epson on the screen. It is huge, very clear, and the touchscreen is very responsive. The screen size is 4.5 inches and is also a matte in style finish, so if the sunlight is shining through the window, it is still readable. The scanning software allows you to choose from Single side scanning or Duplex (2 sided) scanning in a single pass. It also includes several preloaded scanning options you can customize. The scanner’s speed is super-fast even at the full resolution of 1200 DPI in duplex mode. A 1200 DPI duplex scan took less than 6 seconds. Unboxing this Epson scanner was pretty straight forward. You will have 6 main items in the box. (Scanner unit, Document feeder, USB cable, AC Adapter, Power cable and Start Here poster) (Picture attached)
Following the instructions in the Start Here poster took about 18 - 20 minutes (Software setup, Test scanning and firmware update)
I used the wireless option setup for my office. THe touchscreen menu is quick to respond and has easy to navigate menus. (See picture attached for a picture of the touchscreen)
I ran quite a few test scans ranging from 7 pages up to 75 pages. The scanner does a great job in document feeding. It did not skip any pages. I used the scan to folder option for the major of my work.
Please see below for a snippet of some of my scanning data:
7 page Black and White scan
One sided - 200dpi
The scan had combination of text, maps and site plans
It took 14.50 seconds to scan these 7 pages
325KB using standard compression
70 page Combination of color and black/white pages.
Two sided (duplex) - 200dpi
The scan had combination of text, maps and site plans
It took 59.50 seconds to scan these 70 pages
5.52MB using standard compression

**SETUP**
Epson makes this as easy as it gets. Following the Start Here guide in step 3 to, “Download the ES-580W software package” from the provided link, I let it percolate along. With the device plugged in and ON, the software was installed on a Windows 10 PC, found and connected the scanner to Wi-Fi and made it ready to operate. Then, it found and installed a device firmware update. And that was that. The software package was also installed on a Mac, with the mobile software installed on an iPhone, iPad and two Android phones.
Before leaving the software installation on the PC, I accessed settings to tell scans generated by and through the PC where they should be stored, what resolution to use as default (200dpi) and other personalizations each user may make. One setting of note – the scanner software can be set to start scanning automatically when it senses loaded documents AND with the launch of the desktop software. I chose not to select this option.
On the Epson ScanSmart PC software screen can be seen a choice for SCAN double-sided, SCAN single-sided and this one with a corner sash-type banner called, “TRIAL – Manage Invoices/Receipts.” Under the clickable are these words, “Automatically extract data form [sic] invoices/receipts and upload to QuickBooks, TurboTax, and Quicken.” Underneath is a long oval with this text inside, “Click here for more details.” That would be nice, I thought. Intrigued, I clicked! This becomes a $100 non-subscription software add-on called, “Invoice and Receipt Manager.”
Without this package, users can save the images of these files. With the software, certain fields are recognized and data extracted, then automatically exported to accounting management software as listed above. What a time-saver for small businesses as well as individuals who regularly require this data for tax time! The 30-day trial was not evaluated.
Finally, I looked into the “Scan Settings” within the software. Under the Main Settings tab the following choices were available:
· Document size Auto Detect in addition to all the standard size presets
· Image Type, including Auto, Color, Grayscale and Black & White
· Stitch Images Off, top and bottom or left and right
· Rotate, from Auto to 0°, 90°, 180°, 270°
· Correct Document Skew, with options Paper Skew, Contents Skew, and Paper and Contents Skew
· Skip Blank Pages, On or Off
· Detect Double Feed, On or Off
Under the Advanced Settings tab were the following choices, with others not available on this scanner:
· Image Option – None; Remove Background Standard or High; Text Enhancement Standard or High;
· Brightness – Default to 0, adjustable from -100 to 100 (useful for photo scans)
· Contrast – Default to 0, adjustable from -100 to 100 (useful for photo scans)
· Unsharp Mask – Off, Low, Middle, High (useful for photo scans)
· Descreening – Off, Low, Middle, High
· Edge Fill – None, White, Black
· Remove Punch Holes – Off, All Edges, Left & Right, Top & Bottom
· Watermark – Off or On
Users are encouraged to take the time to explore and become familiar with the full array of user settings for maximum enjoyment and efficiency.
All set up and ready for fun!
**PUT TO THE TEST**
The Touchscreen provides on-device choices similar to those in the desktop software; what to do with scans and where to send them. Plugging a USB stick in the provided port on the back of the scanner tells the scanner you may wish for scans to go there, bypassing the computer for scanned document portability.
Printed documents were scanned to PDF and OCR software created search capabilities. Others were scanned, OCR read and sent to Microsoft Word (installed on my devices) where formatting was generally preserved. I tested the software’s ability to recognize and discard blank pages. Perfect! On some documents with particularly small font sizes, it was necessary to increase the DPI so the OCR could do its work. Users will become familiar with these subtleties through experience.
Next up, receipts from grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants, home improvement stores and big box stores. These random receipts were neatly unfurled, and equally neatly stacked for loading in the ADF. One of the grocery receipts was particularly long. Then, in the PC software, I chose single-sided scan and clicked the on-screen Scan button. Artistry in motion! Though all went through as hoped, one at a time, some appeared not perfectly straight as they were drawn through the mechanism. Once all the receipts had gone through, a window opened on the computer screen with small representations of all the scanned receipts. Clicking on the first one, I could see clearly that the automatic deskewing capabilities had worked perfectly, straightening the images on my screen.
From there, I was able to enlarge and further organize each receipt any way I chose, by the store name or type, for example, and where I chose for them to be stored, be it locally for access on the PC only, or to the cloud where access is possible from all devices at any time.
Presto! BizCard® 6 OCR Software was not evaluated here. However, I have prior successful experience with this somewhat ubiquitous business card acquisition and management software, so I would expect users to meet with success.
Let’s go over maintenance requirements. According to information on the Epson Website, “Clean the inside of the scanner every 5,000 scans. You can check the latest number of scans using the Epson Scan 2 Utility”, with detailed instructions.
There are consumables that may require periodic replacements, though in my experience with similar products, these parts rarely require replacement, but regular cleaning is very important. Consumables include a roller kit. However, this is called for only “every 200,000 sheets,” so it is not likely to be needed for quite a long while.
**CONCLUSIONS**
At first look, the Epson WorkForce ES-580W is easy to set-up and use, right out of the box. Upon further investigation, fine-tuning settings allows even richer capabilities, all of which increase the value to the consumer.
The scanner appears to be well designed and solidly built for long daily duty cycles over many years. Maintenance promises to be minimal beyond keeping the paper path free of dust and debris sloughed off from papers that pass through.
My experience has been great! There is everything to recommend this $400 scanner at its price point. There are more expensive, more robust scanners, but most consumers and small businesses should find this is all that is needed. In fact, I suspect that most users will like the basic features and touchscreen display without diving into the more advanced capabilities. Still, it’s nice to know there is more to this scanner than meets the eye.

I have purchased 2 of these machines. The ES-580 and the other ES-500, keeping one at each house. Both work perfectly and do exactly as they are designed to do. I do like the touch screen on the 580. Great new feature. Software and setup very easy to use. I have basically gone paperless with all of my records. We scan everything and finding and retrieving is simple. Just give the scan a good name and you are done. All you need after this is a good shredder to protect your privacy and you will have eliminated all your paper clutter.

I had to find a desktop scanner that could handle some "heavy hitter" tasks. I needed to scan some folded-up, creased and curled Wills and Trust Agreement legal documents that were printed on 8 1/2 by 14 legal size paper. Job requirements dictate that I produce legible vibrant fascimiles that are archive quality and exibit a sharp image. Just to be safe. I gently guided the lower sections of the curled paperwork as they fed into the scanner. This Epson Workforce Desktop scanner did not disappoint! This scanner is up to the task and produced for me a beautiful document that by far exceeded my expectations. I say this because to scan text that is printed on wrinkled folded paper poses some extra challenges for a scanner. I did a little prep work to try to smooth out the folds and creases by hand. The rest is history. The onscreen scanning app package was easy to use, and it allowed me to preview my completed work and save it to the destination of my choice- a desktop computer folder, or upload it to the cloud. The imagery of the finished product was so nice! For what this scanner CAN accomplish for you, I think that this Epson is a great value for the investment price. I'm impressed!

WOW these are tiny now. This thing rocks. Simple set up to drop things into Drive, Dropbox, an email or a hard drive. Fast. Smart. Big stack of invoices? No problem. Loose leaf version of Homer's the Illiad? Piece of cake. Fast. Simple. Small. Perfect.

Epson WorkForce ES-580W Scanner is a truly capable product. I’m going to list all the cons and pros for a brief summary and include a more detailed review following that list.
Pros:
- VERY capable OCR technology to scan and convert the scanned document into a searchable document with a single pass.
- Conveniently scans both sides of the paper with a single pass.
- Seamless wireless integration across multiple devices (PC, mobile, tablet).
- Great scanning quality.
- A 4.3" touchscreen with multiple available options.
Cons:
- The only thing I can think of would be a more modern-looking design on the device.

Setting up the device is quite easy. Once you follow the instruction and connect the scanner to you wireless connection, linking the scanner to any other device that’s also connected to the same wireless network is super fast/easy, you’ll just tap a button on the target device.
I’m quite impressed with the Epson WorkForce ES-580W Scanner. It has a conventional design of a sheet-feed scanner, being capable of scanning 100 sheets of normal letter size papers at one pass. It also has a 4.3" touchscreen with multiple options built on it. The options on this touchscreen pad are the usual setting plus the options to scan to a computer, a network folder, an email attachment, a cloud-based service such as Google Drive or OneDrive, to a usb flash drive, WSD on a computer, and instructions on scanner maintenance with step-by-step instructions (which are super helpful).
First off, I’m very impressed with the OCR technology built-in into the scanner. I scanned multiple pages of text and found ZERO mistakes in the OCR capability. You can saved the searchable document in the format of a PDF, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint file. This feature was simply my favorite one. Another very useful features was the seamless wireless integration with my cellphone. Once the Epson Smart Panel app is installed on your phone, you can control the device from your cellphone, easily scan documents right into your cellphone (you’re also able to adjust the usual settings from the phone). I was able to compare the scanning quality with another scanner of a different brand (although a flatbed type), and the Epson came off with better scanning qualities overall. After the item has been scanned, you can rotate or change the order of scanned pages separately or together.
Overall, Epson WorkForce ES-580W gives a very capable, option-rich experience to scan multiple documents at a very short time, with an integrated wireless connectivity that makes collaborating and sharing much easier. Disclaimer: This is a review for the Epson WorkForce ES-580W Wireless Duplex Touchscreen Scanner that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review.

Needed a quick and reliable way to scan my family photo library of over 2500 photos. Skeptical at first since it was not sold as a foto scanner, and was almost $200.00 cheaper than the EPSON FF-680. Took the chance and was plesantly suprised. With the proper tweaks, it satified my purpose. Don't understand why some folks are having issues installing it and having WIFI problems. Set it up and started scanning in less than 10 minutes on my Windows 11 PC. Still new, but so far so good.

The Epson WorkForce ES-580W Wireless Duplex Touchscreen Desktop Document Scanner is a superb scanner, in a very compact footprint. The setup was very straightforward (I didn't read the included directions). Head over to www.epson.com/support/es580w to download the most up to date software from Epson. Upon downloading the software, you'll be guided through a step by step setup process to install the scanner software onto your computer through the supplied USB cable. Part of the setup process includes setting the scanner to scan wirelessly, and send document directly to your computer. Once the software is installed, the firmware to the Epson scanner will be updated automatically to the most recent version of the firmware (see the pictures below). After your software is installed, the operation of the scanner is super simple. I found the touchscreen to be very intuitive (see pictures below), and quite responsive to the touch.
The Epson WorkForce ES-580W has every feature you would expect a modern day scanner to have. It has Duplex (this means two sided scanning, for two sided documents) scanning capability, which is an absolute must have! It also allows you to scan through wifi, a feature my old scanner is sorely lacking! This is probably my favorite feature. It allows to to plug your scanner in almost anywhere, as it really doesn't take up much space. Simply feed the documents you want to scan into the document scanner, and touch "computer", which will then bring up the computer that you setup the Epson to scan to. Again, this is a really great feature. You also have the ability to scan to a memory stick/card as well. Although, I did receive the scanner as part of a beta test promotion through Epson, I was very impressed that their instructions couldn't have been more clear that they wanted an honest, and unbiased review, so kudos to Epson for doing things ethically! This is an excellent scanner, for the money. With many of us working from home these days, this is a great tool to add to your arsenal to get the job done! The Epson WorkForce ES-580W Wireless Duplex Touchscreen Desktop Document Scanner... A great compact scanner with a very small footprint! It comes with the the scanner, power adapter, and a usb cable for connecting directly into your laptop/desktop. Setup was very straight forward and takes less than 10 minutes to install and connect to. It is also worth mentioning that the 4.3" touch screen was a very nice feature that allows users with different options when scanning. So far i've been able to scan receipts, photos, and documents with high quality details. The duplex scanning feature is very much appreciated as this makes scanning double sided documents less of a hassle for users! The best thing is both sides of a document can be captured in a single pass, making duplex scanning very efficient as opposed to other duplex scanners. Another great feature that many users will benefit from is the wireless scanning which makes scanning super convenient.
Overall, i would highly recommend this scanner for anyone that needs a compact wireless scanner. The scanner's small footprint coupled with its wireless capabilities make this a great option for anyone that needs a feature full scanner.

This Epson scanner has all of the features I need - double sided scanning (what the pros call "duplex,") wireless upload to cloud destinations (I use Google drive,) and a color touch screen to adjust scan settings. I use the scanner primarily to declutter my life by scanning bills and letters as soon as I get them so I don't have paper lying around. The touch screen lets you adjust things like if the document should be scanned in black and white or in color. It's very easy to setup and use and feels sturdy in terms of build quality yet it is compact enough to fit anywhere.
This scanner fits into my workflow because I can use the screen to decide where the document should go and the documents are scanned on both sides automatically. And what's even better is that, unlike other scanners, this scanner is wireless and can upload straight to the cloud without a computer. You can adjust where documents can go (called destinations) on the Epson website and it's all free. If I have a lot of documents they all fit in the 100 page input tray which is more than double what other scanners have. You are also able to quickly digitize business cards because it can scan those too without an issue and without manual cropping.
