This review is for the Epson WorkForce ES-865 Color Duplex Document Scanner. This document scanner is a compact high-volume scanner with excellent performance and quality results. The scanner has performed very well and the initial setup was simple. It is important to note that the scanner does not come with any media in the packaging for the installation so the instructions do require you to download the software from Epson’s support website. Once you have begun the installation it takes all but a matter of minutes depending on your internet download speed. The installation of the software and drivers is rather simple which includes a installation wizard that will guide you through the process. During the installation of the software you will be prompted to connect the scanner via USB and once connected the program will auto-detect the scanner for first time use. The scanner packaging is simple and compact. The packaging includes the WorkForce ES-865 Color Duplex Document scanner, Auto-document Feeder Tray (ADF), 5FT SuperSpeed USB 3.0 cable, and AC adapter with power cable. The packaging also includes the basic “Start Here” documentation which provides the initial setup instructions to follow. While using this scanner I was very impressed with the ease of use and the speed at which it can produce high quality scans. I tested the performance of the scanners ability and it exceeded my expectations. I have not personally owned a scanner with this kind of performance before. This little scanner is a speed demon and I was able to scan 20 pages of documentation in less than 20 seconds. The ScanSmart software is user friendly and allows you to adjust the scanned documents with ease including rotating & cropping. The included TWAIN driver provides excellent compatibility with numerous software applications including but not limited to Scan to Email function, Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive. You of course have the ability to save the scanned images directly to your local hard drive in industry standard file type formats such as PDF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and BMP. Overall I am impressed with this document scanner and the included software. Its super easy to use and because of its small size (Width 11”, Depth 8”, Height 9”) it does not take up a bunch of work space on your desk. The printer is also fairly light, weighing in at 7.8lbs (without AC Adapter/cord). I did also try to scan some color photos and it worked just as good with the photos as it did with the text documents. The quality of the resolution on the images is superb and they look great. After using this scanner I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a scanner that is fast and produces high quality images. This Epson DS-865 is blazing fast and the OCR results are among the best I've seen. I've used many different model scanners at work and this model competes with more expensive models in those terms of performance. It scans at over 60 pages per minute (double that if double-sided) and has a high duty cycle rating of 7,000 page a day, these two specs would make this an ideal workhorse for businesses. The feeder holds up to 100 pages and is flexible in use. This model has TWAIN support which allows you the ability to use other scanning software if you chose to. I tested the TWAIN support with 3rd party scanning software and it worked well with no problems. But when it came to OCR accuracy the Epson software with it's built-in OCR support or integration could not be beat so I stuck with using the bundled Epson ScanSmart software. The OCR from the Epson software was much quicker as well. Image quality is very good and resolution maxes out at 1200dpi. The Epson SmartScan software is straightforward and easy to use, but it is a bit light on advanced features and settings. The software could be a bit more robust with easier/quicker access to scan quality settings. It has buttons to allow for attachment to email, uploads to cloud hosts like Google drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Evernote, Print, and saving to MS Office file formats. The Invoice/Receipt Management features unfortunately requires a paid one-time upgrade. Unfortunately this model is missing network connectivity, there is no Ethernet or Wi-Fi support. This limits the versatility of the scanner and forces you to place it at a desk next to a desktop or laptop. I would've liked to bring it into the living room and spend an afternoon scanning mail and documents in front of the TV. In the office it could've have been set up near the front reception counter to quickly scan documents from clients. Since there is no network connectivity, there is no scan to smartphone or tablet support. Another negative is the lack of support for user-defined jobs through the scanner menu and interface. I've used scanners in the past where you could set up pre-defined locations and folders to scan to and with different scan settings accessible from the scanner itself and I feel that is an important feature for businesses. There is no "One-touch" scanning either which several competitors offer. When you press the SCAN button on this scanner it starts up the Epson Scansmart software on the connected PC and you have to continue the scanning process there, there is no way to set a default save location and have files automatically named and saved without PC intervention. Scanning at the very minimum requires 3 button presses or clicks; Scan button on the scanner, click on "Save" in scanning software to bring up the Save screen, then another click on "Save" to save the file. This was a disappointment after using other brands and models that offer that time-saving feature. The build quality of the scanner is solid with good quality rigid plastics with minimal flex and good fit of components. The rollers and other consumable parts have an estimated lifetime of 200,000 scans and replacement parts are available. The footprint is small and compact and that helps with placement and positioning on the desk. The feeder and output trays are versatile and easy to manipulate for different paper sizes. I've scanned a few hundred pages a day so far without a hiccup or paper jam, the high volume reliability is impressive. The existing features and functionality may be adequate and enough for typical home users or less demanding offices with straightforward scan jobs, but this excellent hardware would really benefit from software updates that add features to improve ease of use, versatility, and one touch scanning that advanced users want. If you do not need more advanced features and customization and only need a fast, accurate, and reliable scanner that does it's job then this model would be great and recommended. The excellent OCR accuracy and fast scanning speeds certainly make this a terrific scanner for most users. When I first received the Epson ES-865 scanner, I was impressed that it has such a small footprint for such a workhorse of a machine. I unpacked the scanner and used the quick guide included to set it up. Super simple, straightforward and easy to understand. I was able to download and install the software from the website successfully and install it without incident. Did the test scan and was truly blown away at the result. I then decided to scan some double sided magazine pages I had been working on with my previous scanner to get some comparison. I was very impressed with how quickly it pulled the multiple, double sided, glossy pages through the auto feeder so fast and the scans showed up on my computer screen instantly. I then decided to mess with the settings and get some idea of just how high of a resolution I could scan on some old photos I want to digitize. My photo scans came out beautiful and I was able to play with them in photoshop because of the high resolution scan. My next job was to scan multiple pages at the same time since this is the primary reason I need this scanner. I put 56 double sided pages and the scanning was complete in less than 60 seconds! You can officially color me impressed. Love you can scan both sides of document and can scan multiple sheets

The scanner is excellent. I have a small business, and the speed and quality are A+. The only downside is that it sometimes fails to communicate with the computer through the USB port. Nevertheless, Epson customer services have resolved the issue in less than 5 minutes.

This scanner was easy to get out of the packaging. Setup for the scanner was quick and easy and the instructions were easy to follow and understand. My wife who is not a technie like I am was able to follow them to get it physically setup. Once setup I decided to do some test scans as I had a bunch of documents I needed to input on my computer. I have to do a lot of scanning due to my job, and due to some volunteer work I do with a non profit organization. Sometimes I have stacks of papers that need to be scanned and then input into a database. I ran about 20 documents through it at the same time and it was quick in scanning both sides and the quality was excellent. It doesn't take up a lot of space which is also important to me as my desk space at home is not that great. It is not overly load when do you do scan. It would be nice if there was some wireless capability, but if it had that you would loose the speed at which it scans so that is one thing I am ok with it not being there. Overall this is a great scanner. The price of it, while it may seem high, is where it should be for such an excellent product. Efficient and problem free Easy to connect to computer

I'm extremely impressed with this Epson DS-865 Scanner. I have used several different scanners at work and home and nothing compares to this mighty machine. When I first received it I was surprised at how light it was and was afraid it couldn't do the work I needed done. Boy was I wrong. It was super easy to set up. It comes with a quick guide that is easy to follow and I just downloaded the software from the website. I love that it doesn't take up much space and so easy to learn to use. The screen is a perfect size for me. I am amazed at how easy the scanning process is and how fast it scans. Nothing I have ever used even comes close to comparing. This sure makes life easier and it scans both sides and I scan to the cloud which keeps my documents safe. This is going to really make me much more productive and the quality is impeccable. The detail is perfect and this will be great for work documents, business cards, photos, ID Cards, etc. The resolution really shocked me. I never thought this little machine could work this great. It's also very sturdy and I can see it working for many, many years. I highly recommend it. While at first I thought it was a tad expensive I now believe it is worth every penny. Very disappointed. For $700+ dollars expect scanner to work for longer than 13months after purchase. White plastic ADF mechanism no longer feeds documents through. Buyer beware!!!! Not recommending purchase if you value your money.

This review is for the Epson WorkForce ES-865 Color Duplex Document Scanner! Just want to tell you I am in love with this scanner. I own a very busy remote medical billing office and I am constantly scanning documents to and from physicians and to and from my accountant. This little scanner is a workhorse and speedy Gonzales all wrapped into one. I was able to scan 30 pages of documents in less than 20 seconds! Amazing! The ScanSmart software on this scanner allows you to change the scanned documents using the rotate and crop features. Plus it is super easy and not hard to use which is important to me because I sometimes find these things daunting to use. Not this scanner. There are so many different software applications that you can scan with this machine, like scan to your email, MS Word, Excel, and One Drive to name a few. It covers everything that I might want to scan and save or send and you can save in several ways like PDF, PNG, BMP, JPEG, and TIFF. So that gives you a variety. The setup was very easy but you do have to download the software from Epson's support website, it does not come in the box. When it arrived I thought really this is it? Comes in a very compact box but boy once you open and start setting it up you really got a lot in there. You get in your box the Workforce ES-Color Duplex Scanner, auto-document feeder tray, ac adapter with power cable, and a 5ft long super speed USB 3.0 cable. Once you get it set up and install the software it doesn't take very long and you're ready to go! So impressed! Basically had it up and running and scanning in less than 15 minutes! Just have to say I am super happy with this scanner! It is lightweight 7.8lbs and small enough to fit almost anywhere. That is important because I work from a home office. It is only 9 inches high, 11 inches wide, and 8 inches in depth so I got it on my desk super easy with room to spare. I honestly would recommend this to anyone working in a smaller office or larger office that wants quality scanning for photos and documents. It's an amazing little machine! When you take it out of the box, you’ll notice that it’s well packaged. Not excessively, but enough to protect the scanner being shipped to your door. The scanner itself is quite sturdy and well constructed. It is a heavy-duty plastic and has a nice texture and appearance. The paper folds out to catch large documents as they scan, and compactly slides back inside the scanner itself to save space. It works with both Windows 7-10 PCs and Mac OS systems. It was very easy to set up, install, and begin using the scanner within just a few minutes. The specs of this scanner are phenomenal for the price-point, and the performance is phenomenal. To start off, it does 65ppm/130ipm (duplex) in color/b&w/grayscale. With a 100-page feeder that has nice, smooth sliding size adjustments it makes scanning large batches a snap. It also includes a double-feed detection to make sure that you don’t miss scanning any pages that are discretely stuck together. You can scan documents as small as 2”x2” and as large as 8.5”x240” using the long document mode, so it should be able to handle almost any scan job you can throw at it. It also has a small, color, LCD display that allows you to scan, change settings, perform maintenance, and view information. This is a somewhat useful feature so you don’t have to mess around in the scanner software to find any of these operations. The Epson ScanSmart software is a very user-friendly interface and allows for basic scanning functions and save/send the documents to various services/locations. You can either initiate a scan from the software, or just load your stack of documents and hit the blue scan button on the scanner and (when connected to your computer) it will automatically load the software and start scanning the document. Exceptional Upon receiving this product I didn’t know the capability of it especially since it’s so compact. Let me say I was astonished. My 8 year old son helped me take it out on the box and set it up to start using (so yes it’s easy to unbox and set up and is lightweight). So my husband says I save way too many papers but in my defense- we may eventually need them for something right?! So I thought this would be perfect to declutter the paper and get everything stored and organized. It is to my amazement the speed of this scanner. It literally takes seconds and maybe not even that long. This also can scan the back of documents without having to take the paper out and feed again. Talk about a time saver. Another great feature - is the accuracy of the scan. Colors details everything. My little kids love helping load the scanner and find it funny how fast it goes. We’ve scanned documents, pictures, receipts, manuals etc and everything has worked superbly. There’s been no glitches nothing. It’s been extremely dependable and a life saver. Not to mention helped me declutter and not have to worry about keeping papers. I am so glad to have this in my life. I'm very pleased with this Epson scanner. Its amazing and the quality of the prints is the best I have ever seen. It's lightweight and easy to set up. It comes with instructions that mske setting it up a breeze. I was able to download the software bed fairly easy too. It scans both sides at one time which is going to save me lots of time with the word I perform. It's easy to save your files and you can even send to others. It has definitely exceeded my expectations. The colors are so bright and vivid. I love that it doesn't take up much space on my desk. Overall this is just a great, high quality scanner that I know I will continue to enjoy using. This scanner is outstanding in its capabilities. Although it may seem compact, it exceeds all expectations with its ability to quickly scan a large load of documents accurately, with a clear image and without any of the items being misfed. After using the scanner to save documents to my computer, I have never encountered an issue in which it is not uploaded to my destination, and being able to scan double-sided is a huge plus. The installation of the driver was quite simple and quick. The small size of the scanner makes it possible for it to be placed in various locations. My children have been using this scanner to test for when school begins and they have had no problems they are super happy with the performance. First I was so excited to receive my scanner! The Epson ES-865 was boxed securely and I was impressed with the packaging. It came safe in the box and was super easy to unbox and begin setting up. The scanner took me less than 10 minutes to have ready in my office to being using. I like that the scanner does fast scans and the automatic document feed tray can handle large documents very easily. The buttons on the front of the scanner operate easily for operation. I like that the scanner is relatively quiet too since I do a lot of scanning I have it right on my desktop work station. The scanner connects easily with a USB cable and I have been impressed with the resolution of the documents. I scan in a lot of contracts, so resolution is extremely important to me for clarity and professional documents. I have yet to experience any jams and overall would recommend this product for your business needs!

The scanner provided a clear and high tech picture. It is also able to be placed in highly decorated areas as it has a nice look to it. The scanner was easy to install. It works very quickly and efficiently. My younger kids were also able to use it. We will definitely be using it for work related and academic related necessities.
