I love Epson printers, they have served my printing needs for many years. But the inks for my Artisan 837 are no longer available in single form, except black, at retail stores around me. So after reviewing several printers, both laser and inkjet, I jumped at the Eco-Tank system. After about an hour of setup, including removing the old 837, un-boxing, and actual PC setup everything just simply worked just like my old 837. IPad printing also just worked. What sold me was, potential yield for ink, Duplex printing, ADF, copying and scanning at better performance than the 837, haven't looked at photo printing yet as it's not my needs like it was when I bought the 837. Yes I paid a price difference up front as compared to cartridge type inkjets but my printing is more business type printing such as documents, web sites, and reports. Color is still important for these uses for me. My print tests that I've run look better than the old printer too. It would not be fair to compare 6 color to 3 color photo printing which is why I haven't really tested that. The company I work for sells this type of Inkjet technology, tank vs cartridge, but the base price is out of the home office league; however in the long haul tank inkjet is as reliable as the inkjet cartridge printers so buying into the Eco-Tanks just made sense.

The ink reservoir is a good idea

I was attracted to this printer based on longer ink life and online reviews. I replaced an HP laser jet all in one.
I found the installation instructions for a Mac very poor. Apparently Epson feels every computer should still have a cd port - haven't used one of those in at least 5 years. The URL in the installation instructions directs you to their very unorganized website homepage rather than linking to software download instructions. I'm still unable to print wirelessly and can only scan using the app on my iPhone. I wish Apple made printers.
Print speed is slow and paper in the scanner feed jams often. The paper tray is low quality and holds a small amount of paper. Print quality is very average.
I'm donating this printer to charity and going back to Hp. Your grand experiment with ink savings failed with me Epson.

Purchased this printer for a small clinical practice to use for marketing purposes. Set up was straight forward and I did not run into any problems. Began printing within 30 minutes of taking it from the box. Looking forward to not spending money on frequent toner purchases.

Quality Printer yet Lacking some functionality

Epson ET-4550 is a great at home and some light business printing needs. Its much better suited to multi colored pages, black laser like text and speed! Printing is a joy to use when you need it quickly. I had recently purchased a Canon MX922 I always liked Canon printers and the quality on paper it seams to be far superior. However, there are features that this Epson Ecotank does that is much much better. Printing is almost instant at the press of a button either wireless or with a USB cable where as the Canon would take minuets to get ready before printing. I printed many pages the first day I got it testing all the settings and different types of papers in comparison. Bright colors in photographs were lacking and would require some fussing to get right that is on just "PLAIN" paper that is. if its just a document such as a recipe online or a graphic it looks just fine. Sometimes better then expected just not so much for photographs.
Change the paper type and the images pop right off the paper. Having printed on multiple types of paper Matte photo paper and Glossy photo paper work the best for photography obviously. I was curious at the print settings themselves as the drivers with the USB have always had more settings to play with. Adjusting the images either automatically or setting it up for scenes to correct any color differentiations. Some are noticeable others are not.
Printing over wifi with the correct paper type sets up the printer to automatically adjust and make the corrections for you and does its best to replicate the image from your screen. Over USB there is an overwhelming amount of options that can leave you setting up your print for more then you should. If it wasn't so expensive for photo paper it wouldn't be such an issue as plain paper.
This is the highest printer you can buy with as many functions for under $500 yet there are features that even my $69.00 MX922 has that the ecotank should obviously include with its price tag. Borderless printing should be a standard in all printers some one Epson basic printers have this included at no extra premium. Two sided printing is available yet the Et-4500, Et-2550 and Et-2500 lack this feature. Also lacking is two sided ADF which are available in higher business models along with borderless printing. ET-4500 and ET4550 include ADF of 30 pages yet are only one side at a time.
These features do not discount the Et-4550 however for the sale price of $500 i'm scratching my head on this one. Other features such as the display is a lcd screen an old technology while others either lack a screen or have a tiny 2" color (non touch) display. Other printers in the past have a brilliant 4" touch screen that adds elegance and beauty to such a device.
So far I've been printing several high quality photographs on Matte and some Photographic paper and with over 1000 pages I still have 3/4th of a tank left. One further note on paper is the lack of a dedicated photo tray which was standard on other models and my Canon MX922.
This also adds a fax capability which I might never use but its there if you need it. and the keys are very plasticy feeling and make noise with a slight of touch.
Would I recommend this printer?... Yes at first with the need for such a printer would have to be great enough to warrant the cost of ink replacements. Sure you have options of getting other printers and installing a Continuous ink system just like this printer has built in. I've installed them in the past with success yet the setup is lengthy and messy until you have it just right. It also doesn't look like it was built in and some require modification to the printer voiding any warranty if such a need is necessary.
Your other options are to refill the cartridges which if printing a lot like I do would be time consuming and sometimes messy too. Then there is buying third party cartridges which are much cheaper option yet wasteful.
No I would recommend this to anyone and I would like to see other companies do the likes as well. Get rid of the throw away cartridges and just refill the ink. I would also like to see Epson come out with a 6 color Wide format Color printer with Higher DPI and the Precision Core printhead... and of course borderless printing too!

Loving it

My wife is a teacher so we go through a lot of ink especially at the beginning of each year as she gets everything ready. This printer is perfect for us. We have had the printer for 2 months and have had no problems. Print quality is better than I expected. Came home to a tray full of dog, cat and turtle pictures sitting in the tray because my 8 yr old daughter figured out how to print pictures off the internet. Got all excitable worried about how much money she had wasted. Checked the app on my phone and none of the colors had even moved. Gotta love that. At the rate we used ink on the last printer we should break even on the upfront cost in about a year and a half. Everything after that is saved money.

Junk

I HAD an Epson ET-4550 inkjet printer. It was very user unfriendly for as long as I had it. Most of the problems seemed to be software related. I tried over and over to talk to the tech support. All they would recommend is head cleaning. In this go round I must have cleaned the heads 10 times. if I tried to print color it spit out black paper until tray was empty. I finally took it into the garage and smashed it up with a hammer so II would not waste more time on it. I will never own another Epson product.

Perfect for color printing like fliers Saves money

This is the best printer I have ever used for printing color fliers, good quality pictures when doing bulk printing. Not a printer for printing photographs, however for color pages it is very good. Amazing saving on ink. We have printed 300, double-sided, full, fliers with multiple pictures embedded and have barely touched the ink levels. The quality of the flier is excellent and savings have been in the hundreds already.

Troubleshooting is My Friend

This printer is super slow. I have the fastest wifi connection available for my home, and it is operating perfectly, so it's an issue with the printer. I have to troubleshoot and look online on a regular basis to figure out why I keep getting various error messages. I go through the fixes. I reinstall. I do everything I'm told to do. Things work fine for a day or two, but then another error message occurs. I get a message that my printer has a paper jam, but there's no paper jam. I get a message that my printer is out of paper, but there's paper. It's frustrating to have a wifi connected printer that requires me to go to it to explore non-existent problems. Finally, the print quality is just okay. I'd say, for the money, this was not a good buy on my part.

Wake the dead! This printer is LOUD!!! It's also pretty slow. I had few options due to space limitations and needed a multi-function printer/scanner/copier. I forked out the bucks to get this one because 1) it seemed to have the features I needed (it does but it doesn't have the convenient USB port to print without having to boot up the computer), and 2) the savings on ink cartridges would "help" offset the upfront costs. Think I made a mistake. It's okay, I'm giving it 3 stars, but wish I had purchased something else. Not all that it's cracked up to be.

So far printer is working like a champ, ink can be messy to install just wear a pair of gloves and have a towel or two handy just in case. I did not make a mess installing the ink, just a few splotches from opening the bottles.

I have been waiting for them to come out with this for a long time. The number one reason i purchased this printer. I guess the company got tired of all the bootleg ink companies making all the big bucks on something they could do themselves.

Not worth the upcharge

So after reading all the hype i decided to buy this machine. Who doesn't like cheap ink right? Unfortunately, the set up process is VERY messy!! and the printer controls are a bit clumsy. The worst part is the next day when I went back to the store to buy a headset I realized that it was the EXACT same printer as the $69 epson on the shelf but with ink jugs on the side. I just paid $500 for a $70 machine, I think the "cheap" ink marketing was just a myth.

Poor Print Quality

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
The idea was great with significant savings on inks. This would definitely be a game changer for the desktop printer market. It appears the new Eco Tank line is taking the reverse approach of give away the ink and make the up front money on the printer. That's ok, except for the fact that the print quality is very poor quality. There is banding in all prints with full coverage, (photos, solid colors, etc). I am a commercial printer technician and have gone through all the recommended calibrations and adjustments. Unless you only print color prints with simple text then this is not a good choice.

1 1/2 Years Later....

Initially when I purchased this, I was thrilled at not having to buy the expensive ink cartridges. A year and a half later the print head fouled up and all tricks to clean it per instructions have failed. If you call tech support, expect that you will be talking to someone in the Philippines. I couldn't understand the first person I dealt with due to his thick accent. I hung up and called back. The second person was a little better but verifying information was tough. We muddled through it and after about an hour on the phone, they authorized a replacement under warranty. If you buy from Best Buy, I would encourage you to get their extended warrant to avoid a situation like mine (I could have walked in and out with a new printer under the Best Buy plan), Epson's Tech Support is by far the worst I've dealt with in a long time. I like the idea of the eco-tank, but in the long run, it may not be the best. Good luck!

will never buy an Epson printer again!

For the amount that we paid for this printer we expected to have lasted at least two years. It comes with "1 year manufacturers" warranty. What these people failed to mention when you go in store is that if you register your product you get and extension of another 12 months (24 months total) instead they want to sell you theirs. Now a 1 1/2 year later the top feeder doesn't work. For that price I would have expected a minimum of 2 years. Anywhere else (at east honest people) would have told me what the manufacture warranty is. If i go and buy a new car they tell me the car comes with a 3yr manufacture warranty and if i want to extended then I have the option to buy one. But these guys never once mention it. Now here I am stuck with a broken printer. and to make matters worse i called Epson and they didn't even know they had an extension to their warranty. Never again.

I bought the printer a year ago and luckily pay for the extended warranty for replacement. It lasted seven months, and by the same token, the replacement went kaput after three months of use. I am on the third one now. Both of them were printing with streaked lines. I do not use it that much (ink tanks were 95% full) and expect the third replacement to last a little bit longer.

Bad Experience

I spent much more than I wanted but I was looking for carefree and got just the opposite. A ton of time spent getting it online with poor support and after 20 copies the black began to disappear in spots s though the ink was gone. Amazing and the quality of the buttons and screen were not nearly as good as the next computer that I bought for 1/2 the price and setup a breeze. This is the first review I have ever written, that's how bad the experience was.

After 15 months the printer will no longer recognize photo paper. The Geek Squad won't even look at it. The guy from the Geek Squad I spoke with suggested buying another printer!!!! Beware the 2 Year warranty from Epson is only good if you register it. Otherwise it is only good for one year.

Will not copy 2 side to 2 side. Only 1 to 1 or 1 to 2. Seriously!!!! Called Epson and they said it is a limitation on the scanner. I don't even know what that means. Inept is the best way too describe this design!
