    High Expectations not completely met...

I took a huge chance on this movie, mainly based upon the previous reviews that I had read on-line. Did it live up to the hype? Not completely. However, that's not to say that this was all that terrible. In a lot of ways, this movie reminded me a lot of the original theatrical release version of the now-classic Blade Runner. The story is similar. The pacing is similar. However, it lacked action. The story heavily relied on state-of-the-art CGI, a lot of coarse language & sensual content. The movie was filled with your typical stock characters, dialogue and conflict. There really wasn't much overall development to make this as nearly compelling as Blade Runner. The action wasn't as strong - with one exception. Alicia Vikander's performance was nuanced with many layers. Whenever she was on screen, she was absolutely compelling. It just felt like an Independent film that poured the majority of its budget into the visual effects. As if it were a great idea that wasn't properly developed or executed. It was a decent movie. It just fell a little short of my expectations.

    Decent movie, but predictable

Good acting, but with a predictable plot and almost no character development. The actual elements of the Turing test for AI are glossed over and other technical concepts that are essential to the thesis of the film are poorly represented, if at all. It also draws some rather obvious parallels to Google and sort of touches on the dangers of "big data", but, again, treats its audience as if they are not intellectually capable of handling the greater implications of that topic. A decent movie if you want to see decent acting and get your noodle going about the concept of AI in the relatively near future, but don't expect this to teach you anything you didn't know about the technicality, morality, or ethics of AI and the aggregation of data in modern society.

I really, really wanted to like this movie for its AMAZING special effects with the "robot/AI" but the rest of it went sooooo slowly, I got bored waiting for something great to happen. I realize the main character at the house/lab was supposed to be "off" but he reminded me too much of a sinister person, versus a braniac genius who made all of this happen. At the very end, there was finally a twist, but it was really depressing as heck and too dark for me. Then the last scene closed so there could be a sequel, which was good. It made me think about all the "what if's," but I was still left thinking about what happened to the guy at the end and it bothered me--not in a good way.

Better than "Under the skin", however

The story of the programmer winning a contest to go to the company's owner was not so believable. But once the movie got underway, it became more believable. Domhnall Gleeson did not really seem to fit the role of the young program but he appeared to be nerd enough for the role. Oscar Isaac did not also seem to fit the role of the brilliant inventor of the AI robots that were the best part of the story. OnlyAlicia vikander who was very believable as the robot that seduced Caleb Smith the young programmer winner. The end of the story was good with the robot trading places with real people who either were eliminated (owner) or imprisoned in the house as were robots.

Not a ton of action in this movie, but it was ok. It seemed short, but it was just a really fast-moving movie. This is more of a sci-fi thriller. The 4K version did not impress me at all. I feel like it was a waste of money simply due to the poor blacks. The few outdoor scenes looked amazing, but overall I was not impressed. The audio was decent, but I found myself having to crank up the volume to really get the cinematic effect that I'm used to in a home theater. Atmos was nearly nonexistent.

What looked like an opportunity for greatness in theory, ends up being a mere visual delight. This mildly sexy, tour de "effort", could have taken the genre of artificial intelligence to a new level. But, instead of building on the likes of "I, Robot", I was disappointed in what turned out to be little more than eye candy with no diffinitive direction. Nevertheless, the special effects and acting performances are done well. And there is a certain amount of shock value a' la "Clockwork Orange" to merit a look.

the plot certainly is not new. The special effects are excellent. In all fairness this whole movie was done very well. But when it ended I found myself going HMMMMMMMM. So I gave it 3 stars. I think it was the story line. Just not that interesting. when I really like a movie I will watch it again in the future. this one probably not. Worth watching only if you have nothing better to do.

This is a great movie. However, I redeemed my code through Vudu and it did not give me a UHD digital version, which is asinine. If you buy UHD, you should get UHD digital copy. This particular movie is not compatible with Movies Anywhere, either, so you’re locked to whatever service you choose when redeeming. Weak.

Had potential to be great movie. Excellent production quality. Story was great. Kept getting point where pace would pick up and then didnt deliver. Almost felt like a short story made into film. Problem is/was that this was/is a feature length film. If pick this up on sale buy. Visually great movie and great story/ plot. Just it does not develop what could have been.

I liked the film and was impressed with the effects. There could have been a few more characters in the film, but it did keep me guessing as to what was going to happen, and I was well entertained. It's not a movie I'll watch often, but I'll watch it again say in 5 months. Nice addition to my sci-fi collection.

This movie is ok for a viewing. Nothing I will watch over and over as there is like no action and doesn't do the greatest job keeping your attention in my opinion. A lot of people liked it thought so if say it's worth a watch but it's not as good as a lot of people say

I buy movies without every having read reviews or even looking up any information on a movie. I liked the look of this film and thought the story was very interesting. Overall I ended up feeling disappointed by the end. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but just save your time. Wasn't very enjoyable.

It probably wasn't a good thing for the film that I'm a hardcore West World fan and the theme's are so similar. Soon after viewing "Ex" I also saw Transcendence which was about the same topic. the film challenges your intelligence and was worth the time.

This movie had a lot of build up for the ending of the movie. Alicia Vikander is great and becoming a wonderful actress. Oscar Isaac and Domhall Gleeson play their parts very well and help build the suspense of the movie, which makes the movie enjoyable, but it leaves you wanting and expecting more.

The premise has been done before: a machine becoming more like a human. This one had a more scientific and philosophical approach, so it is not a movie that everyone will enjoy. However, if you like movies that are engrossing and make you think, you will probably like this one.

Not your atypical sci fi flick. Was able to watch all of it but never thought yeah I'm loving this movie. Each person is different so I will say give it a try but it wasn't my go to movie.

Original idea, good acting which some different types of special effects, interesting, but I really did not find highly enjoyable-many moments of boring scenes & dialogue, but the girl is pretty. I definitely did not like the end of the storyline. Worth a once or twice watch.

My husband had been wanting to see this film and bugging to rent/buy it so we did. He thought it was an action packed movie. Boy was he wrong. The movie is slow moving and not at all what we thought. The ending had a unseen twist but it was ok.

This is a good AI movie, but pretty slow and dramatic. Not saying that's a bad thing. Just not worthy of buying for a collection. It is a good movie and looks great but will I watch it again, prob. Not

Ex Machina is a dramatic twist on the artificial intelligence movies. It will draw you in as with each hint of life, of real thinking, the fantasy becomes reality and you are left thinking to yourself, where can i get one.
