Very enjoyable love story
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, good cast and well directed. The love story has a good plot and I enjoyed the ending as well. Bought it from seeing the trailer, otherwise knowing nothing about it. Would recommend it if you enjoy a love story from an 1870 England time setting.

Good adaptation
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This isn't the best adaptation of Thomas Hardy's romantic novel. That honor belongs to a British TV adaptation from 1998 which featured the definitive Bathsheba Everdene in Paloma Baeza. But that version also had the advantage of being a miniseries and being able to preserve more of the source material than a feature length film could. But for my money this is better than the 1967 version starring Julie Christie, who wasn't really right for the lead. She was too modern, too sophisticated, too out of place in the world of Thomas Hardy. Carey Mulligan, on the other hand, is quite well cast--even if she manages to make the proud and frustrating Bathsheba a bit softer and more likable than the author likely intended. This is a satisfying filming of perhaps Thomas Hardy's least depressing novel. There's tragedy to be sure but there's also an almost Jane Austen like love story of two people who are clearly meant to be together, in spite of circumstances and bad choices that conspire to keep them apart. This being Thomas Hardy you actually don't know if the would be lovers will actually end up together in the end. Definitely worth watching if you like period romantic flicks like Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Jane Austen, who is much lighter but still not as far removed as from Thomas Hardy's more overtly tragic novels.

A Fine Film Version of Thomas Hardy's Novel
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. To begin with, I am old enough to remember this Thomas Hardy novel being filmed in 1967 as a vehicle for Julie Christie. This 1967 version was quite good and had a strong cast. So I was interested to see how this newest version starring Carey Mulligan came off. For those not familiar with the story, the main character is Bathsheba Everdene who is an independent, headstrong, and beautiful young woman who has just inherited a farm in her native England. Along the way she attracts the attention of three very different suitors. So Hardy's novel becomes a story of her choices and passions and is also an exploration of the nature of love and relationships and the ability of the individual to overcome hardships with resilience and perseverance. Thus, Hardy's 1874 work still speaks to us today. I thought this 2015 version to be nicely photographed and visually arresting, plus the film holds true to its Victorian time period and Hardy's novel. Overall, this is a fine English cast in top acting form and Carey Mulligan deserves credit for a fine performance in the leading role.

Wonderful movie, great characters, story& location
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is based on Hardy's book, but it's not like the previous version that was made with Julie Christy. Yes, Bethsheba is the main female character, however the main focus is on the farmer & not the soldier. Mathias Schoenaerts plays the role beautifully and .what he does with his eyes alone, speaks volumes! Michael Sheen is excellent. All roles are great. The location in Dorcet is exceptional. This movie is done in bright tones and is NOT dull & drab as many are depicted in the time period. This is a time piece that is done in the country. The costumes are colorful, detailed and correct for this era and place. Carey Mulligan is great & her beautifully colored fabrics & patterns in her clothing speaks truth in her character. This movie has a few surprises & a great ending. This is not a dull & lifeless movie. I enjoy it more each time.

SUPERB PERFORMANCES
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The 1967 version of Far from the Madding Crowd has always been something of a favorite of mine, even though I'm not immune to the criticisms often leveled at its length and generally languid presentation. I was immediately struck by how faithful to the spirit if not (every) letter of Hardy's novel this version was, and also grateful that aside from a few modern updates like "jiggly cam" moments adding supposed verisimilitude to sequences like the barn fire, this Far from the Madding Crowd was content to simply tell the story without a lot of needless bells and whistles. Performances are superb and the film is certainly scenic. With excellent technical merits and some enjoyable supplements, Far from the Madding Crowd comes Highly recommended.

One Elegant, Classy Movie!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie does an extraordinary job of capturing the spirit and grandiosity of the Thomas Hardy novel upon which it is based. As a period piece, it is elegant and photographically grandiose, as an epic story it is bigger than life, and its two lead characters are nothing short of exquisite. The face of Carey Mulligan masterfully portrays complex emotions with a virtuoso grace, her beauty is breathtaking, the film features eye-popping photography, and it perfectly captures the fierce independence of woman determined to be mistress of her own destiny. This is a movie to own and watch and rewatch, uncovering more of its beauty and mastery with each viewing.

Far from Distant this Maddening Crowd
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you haven't seen the 1967 version with Julie Christie as the lead actress then you're ahead of the game. Comparisons will be made and each film being made in a different era of production leaves a different nuance with each separate viewing. The new version is lush, beautiful and modern but characters could have used a bit more polish although the invisible narrator does somewhat help explain where even the books fails to expound. You'll love it and watch it again and again or never again.

Great Adaptation
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For a theatrical film, this was a great adaptation of Hardy's novel. I loved Carey Mulligan as Bathsheba Everdene. The actors who played the three suitors were very good as well. This movie was beautifully filmed. As an audience member, I really felt like I was present with the actors. The score was very good, but a little overdone at times. For an approximately two hour movie, the basic and important parts of Hardy's story were covered so well. Highly recommended.

Finally a Thomas Hardy Book to Movie Adaptation
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have loved reading his novels, and I was glad to be able to see this movie when it came out in theaters. He is the male version of Jane Austen, in which he shows the reality of the time period, and yet gives the reader a sense of what it takes to get the same endings like Austen gives her characters. Seeing this movie, I liked how they showed the growth in the characters, I only wish it was a longer movie to have more of the book shown.

Not As Magical As I Expected
||Posted . Owned for 8 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love period relationship movies. This came off a bit like The Thorn Birds. You wanted the 2 main characters to get together, but something always stood in the way. While I enjoyed the story, I found the behavior of the main female character a little less than authentic, especially for the time.

Prompted me to read the book.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie is filmed wonderfully, and has a sweeping, inspiring soundtrack. It felt a little rushed in places (one scene in the deleted scenes is short, but crucial). However, once I read the book, I realized that the author does, himself, skip from event to event. There are some scenes that were changed, but the movie generally stays within the spirit of the book, in my opinion.

Reminds me of Merchant & Ivory
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Far from the Madding Crowd is a very good movie. It moves a bit slowly at times -- sometimes you want to push the characters in what seem like the obvious directions they should go. Like a Merchant & Ivory film, the characters take their time to get to a conclusion, although they do finally get there.

A classic novel comes to life
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A well-made presentation of Thomas Hardy's classic "Far from the Madding Crowd." The romantic story is carefully told, featuring Carey Mulligan as the elusive and reluctant Bathsheba Everdine and three fine actors (Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen and Tom Sturridge) as her suitors. Thomas Vinterberg's direction supports the action nicely, and the cinematography is excellent.

Excellent Period Film
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I saw this movie twice in the theaters this spring, and I was excited to see the DVD was released fairly soon after the theatrical run. Great plot, lush scenery, and period costumes. Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts are stand-outs in the leading roles, with Michael Sheen in an excellent supporting role. Great casting all-around and excellent movie. If you like period films, you will like this movie.

Just don't expect the novel
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This version of "Far From the Madding Crowd" is entertaining, though it really distorts Hardy's novel, especially in its characterization of the heroine. Still, most of the actors are convincing and the scenic elements are first rate. Matthias Schoenaerts steals the show as Gabriel Oak. Definitely worth seeing before reading the more complex and fulfilling novel.

Far from ordinary
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Far From The Madding Crowd is one of those slow-burning romance movies, they make you sit and watch till the very end to find out if she finally makes the right choice. Thankfully, the movie ends the way I was hoping from the very beginning. I love movies that take place in this time period. Carey Mulligan is an amazing actress, and I will watch anything she's in.

Good Adaptation
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This film is beautiful to look at. The cinematography captures the setting with its wonderful scenery. Carey Mulligan gives a good leading performance, although she seemed more contemporary then the period of the film. Leading man Matthias Schoenaerts has great screen charisma. The film should please those looking for a romantic film of a classic tale.

Love story for the people
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I enjoyed the original movie and the book, so I decided to see the remake. I enjoyed the movie because it showed that true love will find its way back to the one you love. He helped her even though he still harbored those feelings and was her trusted advisor until the end. She finally saw the real him in the end and they married.
