Upon recommendation from our local fire department we purchased a unit that used both ionization and photoelectric sensors. You need both to detect flame and smoldering type fires. These units are very inexpensive and very easy to install. We had the wired versions that finally gave out after 20 years. The screws from the old matched up with the new. No need to make new holes to mount. Each one took less than 5 minutes out of the box to mounting and working. Duracell batteries are included.
It is unknown how good the units will work. Just pray that we don't have to find out.
If you have pets, please take them outside when you install the batteries. Our dog was very scared at the sound. Had to go for a walk, carry into the house, and my lap. 30 minutes later and still not himself.

This goes off whenever I cook chicken and my ceilings are 12 ft high. the shut off button does NOT work, it does not stop blasting for an hour. I went to bed after blowing out a candle. 20 minutes after I was asleep it started blasting and continued for one hour. I had a ski pole and kept pushing the shut off button on all 4, I shut off the power, finally at 3 AM my son in law came over with a ladder and took them down. I want to smash them all with a hammer. THEY ARE GONE...DO NOT BUY
