Linked up instantly with Smartthings Home Monitor and tested by lighting a match under detector. Yup, got alerted by Smartthings as expected. Excellent product - it simple, smart and costs less than alternative "dumb" detectors. Bought a second one.

I initially wanted only a carbon monoxide detector but could not find one at Best Buy, which offered this one. It is a wise purchase.
