Quality Smoke and CO2 detector, but it’s no Nest

First I have to say, I bought this because my Nest Protect was at end of life and this product was recommended. For all intents and purposes this seems like a good product with a decent app. The pro is that you can take your nest protect down and put this one up without having to change the mounting plate. Now the cons. Keep in mind these are not inherently the shortcomings of the device itself, but more of in comparison to the unit is replacing. First the app is not as nice ad the best app. It’s easy enough to use but not as elegant and cohesive as the Nest. The overall looks of the unit are not as sleek. The nest looked impressive and to the point you couldn’t tell it was simply a smoke detector. This by comparison is not ugly but plain. And the biggest issue personally, is that this device does not have the guide light that comes on when motion is detected. I would recommend this product as it looks to be the best unit currently available. Compared to the Nest, it falls a little short. The simple fact that you can use the same mounting plate is enough to sway me toward this product.

Your best choice when replacing a Nest Protect

I’ve been a NEST PROTECT fan for over 10 years. Google has discontinued manufacturing these Smoke and CO Detectors and their supply is exhausted. They have outsourced this type of alarm to First Alert. The most important attribute is that it integrates nicely with Google Home, my home control platform. This is important to me because I have 6 installed at my residence. All are interconnected with each other and the Google Home application. This First Alert device has the same form factor and will mate with either your existing Nest Protect or included new mounting plate. This makes alarm replacement easy when an existing device expires (end of life). While this detector works well as a NEST Protect replacement there are two significant differences that are worthy of mention: 1. There is no night lighted ring that we have come to enjoy and appreciate. This is regrettable because the lighted ring enables you to see in a dark environment for safer travel during normal daily activities or during an alert condition. Especially should the alarm sound in the middle of the night, it’s comforting to have some illumination to guide you safely. 2. The First Alert Detector requires different batteries, not the traditional AA size that are more common in many devices. 3V; CR123A batteries power these devices making it one more type to have on hand. Less significant differences: 1. The batteries that are included with the detector aren’t the name brand that we have come to know and have confidence in. They are NOT Eveready Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries with a 20 year shelf life. No, they are manufactured by a lesser known manufacturer that I’ve never heard of. 2. The included mounting plate is affixed by only 2 screws, half as many used to affix the Nest Protect Detector. While 2 screws seem adequate for mounting, using 4 makes for a more robust mount. In conclusion, while this was designed to be a drop in replacement for Nest Protects, it leaves less to be desired in my opinion. I guess this is the price that we must bare for progress.

Perfect Nest replacement for co/smoke smart device

Great replacement to the Nest Thermostat, long battery life and reliability from a trusted company. Don't love the setup since you have to install and login to a new app to get started, rather than direct integration from Google home. But it's still relatively easy and gives peace of mind.

I got this to replace my expiring Nest Protect, as recommended by Google. It was easy to set up and they fit on the Nest Protect mounts, so it was a really painless swap. Although it does the job, it's not as design-forward as the Nest. It's much more basic aesthetically and lacks the Nest Sense features like the pathlight. They take a different type of battery so I have yet to see how long they last in comparison.

I purchased this to replace our Neat ones that had expired. They fit in the slot well and were easy to install. I was disappointed that they no longer have the motion sensor night light.

Easy to setup, and works as intended, but not as feature rich as the Nest Protect it is intended to replace. Google really dropped the ball by not coming out with a new version of the Nest Protect, especially since the protects are now reaching end of life and people will be looking for replacements. The First Alert app is not as pretty to look at, but at least the alarm shows up in Google Home app so you can check on things from there after initial setup. I will buy more of these as my protects reach end of life, but I will miss them and their nightly promise.

Upgraded to this when my Nest Protect smoke/co2 detector expired. Easy to install and setup. Does what it’s supposed to do. Just wish the voice warnings were as loud and clear as my previous unit. I also wished it had the motion detection path light. Other than that, it’s a pretty good unit.

Easy to install (needs a First Alert app), works with existing Nest Protect detectors. Voice not as clear as existing Nest products but no issues so far.

My Nest Smoke Detectors were expiring. I like the fact that the smoke detectors were tied into my Nest network and were smart devices. These were recommended replacements. Set was easy, used the same mounting plates and plugs (if applicable) and are aesthetically pleasing. Would recommend these to those that are replacing nests or looking for new ones that are smart devices.

So far so good. I bought this for a piece of mind, I leave a wood burning stove on over night and wanted to make sure it wasn’t producing carbon monoxide while I sleep. I did own a nest product but since it is no longer in production I settled for this. This is pretty basic compared to the features of the nest, including the look. Overall I am just happy that I have something that has my back when it comes to smoke and carbon monoxide.

Easy to install and very reliable. I like that it combines smoke and carbon monoxide detection in one unit, so I don’t need two separate alarms. The sound is loud enough to hear clearly, and it gives me peace of mind knowing my home is protected. Definitely recommend.

Easy installation. Setting up the First Alert detectors is simple and the application walks you through it seamlessly Had the Ring detectors last time around which I found a little more stylish if you’re wanting something more sleek, but this new iteration is the next best thing..

I purchased this unit due to Nest discontinuing the smoke detector and carbon moxide detector. I'm disappointed with this unit not having the night light which was so useful in the hallway way night. However, the alarm is very loud which is good. It the setup was simple and the nest installation is compatible. So far it's a good purchase.

If you are committed to Nest Protect this is your only alternative. I found it inferior to the Nest Product for 2 reasons: 1. Poor battery life 2. False alarms Be very careful of e-Bay sellers advertising Nest units since my experience was that they were defective. It appears that e-Bay does not regulate their sellers like Best Buy or Amazon and good luck getting a full refund for defective product.

Purchased to replace an expired Google Nest smoke/CO detector. Integrates well with the Google Home app, was able to use the same mounting bracket, so no new holes in the wall. Wish I could have activated using Google Home and not have to deal with another app/account.
