Upon first inspection, this watch was put together great and offered a seemingly limitless amount of customizability and that was great, it’s best aspect truthfully. Once a week passed I noticed the watch’s software started slowing down or exiting randomly, that was no big deal I still loved the watch. The turning point that made me decide to write this review and made me regret this purchase was this evening when I took my watch off the charger, which works half the time probably, and the part that attaches to the charger came mostly off and is starting to dangle.

Good WearOS watch, but limited due to WearOS

The Gen 4s from Fossil are finally the SmartWatches that Google needed at the advent of Android Wear/WearOS. Gone is the “flat tire” on the screen, the woefully inadequate brightness and battery life, and the lack of services available from the first 1-2 generations of Android Wear kit... That being said, the Q explorist HR has some nuance that needs to be considered, less it be risked that a potential owner think they’re getting the Google-based version of everyone’s favorite, squarer, fruity wristwear. First of all, this device FINALLY includes a heartrate monitor! Finally with the Q series we’ll be able to take full advantage of Google Fit, yet this comes at the cost of the previous generation’s speaker, so calls via the watch will require Bluetooth pairing of a headset. Also, the watch is VERY good looking, mimicking the designs that makes Fossil famous in the analog space: Varying metal finishes (I like the smoky/gunmetal finishes myself) and trendy designs that aren’t too gaudy. This version even feels a bit larger in the screen than the older ones, but I think that’s the new bezel which is minimized and a border of darkened/black glass now borders the also-black-background screen, giving the illusion of a larger screen. This effect works on black background faces, but will annoy light/white/color watch face enthusiasts. The other thing I want to caution potential owners about is software: WearOS ain’t no WatchOS from Apple... It’s cohesive enough, supports useful gestures, and Google Fit integration is much improved over previous versions, but apps don’t translate well to round screens, neither do keyboards, and with these watches so small (I’d love to see one matching Fossil’s Nate/Gage sizing for men of a certain... Wrist size!) forget about much functionality from notifications or messaging apps. Which brings me to my next point... I want a SmartWatch for basic notifications and time telling/quick viewing basic information and fitness tracking. I’m happy with WearOS as a phone companion. If you prefer a watch that can host your music and act independently of its phone, these watches are NOT for you. There is no independent LTE connectivity or independent operating mode. This might be a plus to some who don’t see the point in all of the people playing Dick Tracy talking to their wrists to call and text these days. In the end, there’s no mistaking Fossil’s style and notable build quality. A must-have for the Fossil watch collector or techie Android loyalist... For everyone else, FitBit, Samsung, and even Apple have more capable/pointed offerings.

So i put off a review for a while if you surf through reddit you will see posts from the back of the watch falling off, screen coming off, charging rings rusting, charging rings coming off, watch overheating, watch battery fault; and so on. My unit has been SO far EXCELLENT, its still to early (2 1/2 mnths) in with the watch usage. So far my watch can hold almost 2 days of battery life but with tilt to wake on and AOD off, i drain apprx 4-6% per hr charges really quick if you need a quick juice up when you shower. I fear though with the quick charging feature the watch will fail (previous zenwatch 3 owner). The watch is BEAUTIFUL a better design then other watches out in the market. My OS is quite responsive, sometimes i get the ol google software bug of unresponsiveness, thats still on a VERY VERY RARE ocassion. The one thing i dont like is it doesn't have a speaker for notifications or alarm, i really don't care of the microphone. The watch is slimmer than the apple watch series 2 (stainless steel) What is one of my favorite features since im an iphone user is the ability to use google pay, access the play store on the watch WHILE BEING AN APPLE USER. The one thing that i really would enjoy is responding back to MESSAGES. C'mon apple, don't be petty with a half baked app, if you have android you can enjoy ALL FEATURES. I really hope this watch does well with the test of time and wouldn't die on me 6 mnths from now.

Great watch let down by sub-par battery life

The Fossil Explorist 4 is a beautiful Wear OS watch that has a very nice screen, functions smoothly and feels very comfortable to wear. It has a rubber watch strap, but still looks very elegant. It's heart rate monitor is very good, and in general, it's about as good as Wear OS watches get, but unfortunately it has very sub-par battery life. I used it with the display off except when I lift my wrist, and on most days, if I put it on at 7am, it's battery was dead by 8pm best case scenario. If I actively opened an app such as Google Keep or Google Maps and used that for 30 mins the watch would be dead by 6pm at best. I ended up returning it and getting a Samsung Galaxy Watch instead.

I have always been a big google fan so this watch is kind of my dream product with wear os and all. however I must say that I have had 3 scenarios where my watch failed to receive alerts and it was connected to my phone. Also it can be slow some times other than that wonderful product.

If you're bored with your Samsung smart watch, this is a good alternative to use. Google OS watches are not as good as the Samsung wear, but nice watch overall. Stylish and light. Battery is a full day....but that's it. And no speaker, which is a shame. But overall a nice watch.

This is one of the best looking smarwatches I've seen. Build quality seems to be great. The softwear is easy to get used to. However, battery life isn't that great as it require a charge everyday with normal use.

This watch is awesome! I read complaints about battery life.... I don't have any issues with the battery life. I use the watch for notifications mostly and wear it from 7am to about 9pm. I start at 100% charge in the morning and it is always above 50% at 9pm. In the morning it is generally around 50% plus or minus. I charge it in the morning when getting ready for work which takes close to an hour. That is one thing that doesn't match up with the specs. It takes longer than 1 hour to charge when the battery is fully depleted. I keep WIFI OFF, bluetooth ON, auto brightness and I like the default watchface which is mostly black and heartrate monitor OFF. Mostly black saves power since the pixels are OFF. When I do use it for exercise, running or walking, with google FIT the heart rate and GPS are ON. I generally go for a 30 to 40 minute run, and it WILL deplete the battery around 15%. This is to be expected since sensors are being powered, especially the GPS. The watch looks GREAT, just the right size, the band is also very comfortable. My only gripe is the bezel is not raised up so the face is easy to bump against objects. I'm going to install a screen protector for that reason.

I bought this after a coworker bought one and showed me it. Works great, has several funtions and apps that are useful. But I must say the batter life sucks on this thing. I had to buy a second charger for work and turn off some notifications so the battery wouldn't drain so bad. I do love how it looks and supposedly there will be an update that will help batter life in the future. I would have returned this if I didn't love the style.

This was my re-entry into Android Wear / WearOS after 18 months on a Samsung Gear S3. The watch looks great and the center rotating crown is a great touch. However, I was always worried about the batter throughout the day. I got about 18 hours with the always-on display which is enough but not great. The vibration motor was also a bit weak. I ultimately returned the watch after two weeks.

Just a quick caveat to this review: I bought the watch, wore it for less than 2 weeks, and returned it. The watch is great. When I wore it, it felt great on the wrist with minimal weight. At times, it didn't feel like I was wearing anything on my wrist. The watch was synced with my OnePlus 6 on Android Pie. No issues with connectivity. When the watch was upgraded to Watch OS 3, the use was fluid and clean. The only gripe was the battery life. I don't know whether it was the OS, or the watch, but I could barely get a day out of the watch. I had to charge the watch in the middle of the day just so I would have enough juice before I went to bed. There was no way I was going to be able to get 24 hours out of the watch, let alone 18 hours. When I had the Apple Watch Series 3, I was able to consistently get 24 - 36 hours out of it.

Battery life is going to suck the first day. This is mostly due to things getting transferred back and forth between the watch and the phone. After that it gets a little better. By better I mean you'll get about a day before you have to charge it. Otherwise it's just another smart watch that does its job. Telling time and notifying you about things.

Very nice styled looking watch. I really wanted to like and keep this watch. The battery life just wasn't there. I work 10 hour shifts, be lucky if the watch makes it to hour 6. SMH. Maybe I have certain settings wrong or something. I'll stick with my Galaxy Watch. And the soon to be TicWatch Pro.

Many have complaint the battery doesn't last but to be honest all the features it has no wonder. My guess it's not Fossil's fault but more with Wear OS. I really don't have a problem charging the watch everyday and one of the features its the fast charge. It charges very quickly and it lasts me all day. I have the pedometer on, heart rate, weather, messages, brightness on 2 lv, and always on display. I have not try the GPS so I can't comment how well it works. When I'm at work I can't use the phone so the smartwatch does the job pretty well with notifications, messages and phone call notifications. You can't make phone calls that is talk. In terms of durability/quality I work in a restaurant and have bump, scratch and even spill some drops of hot oil, water and so far the watch has taking them like a champ. No problems, I just clean it and it looks like new. Over all I'm very happy with my purchase, it looks good, it has a lot of features and its well made with options to change the straps. I was very skeptical at first mainly because of the battery but after using it for a while it becomes second nature. I will say its worth it.

Beware: Suffers specific lag issue for some users

The hardware, performance, and styling are all very solid for the price-point (and compared to other WearOS devices). However, the watch suffers from severe lag in specific situations. The primary lag issue occurs when receiving a phone call: there is a massive delay in the caller's contact info popping to the screen and the answer/reject call buttons are often unresponsive. Symptoms are consistently repeatable. For reference, my experience was with a Pixel 3 XL. Wife also has the smaller version fossil also on a Pixel 3 XL and suffers same issue. Its possible the issue could be the phone model, but other users report same issues in various online forums with different phone models as well. Further research shows the issue has occurred for some users since launch, so I returned mine. If I saw news that this behavior was patched I would consider a re-purchase. If this issue did not occur I would probably rate this smartwatch a 4-5.

If you want a great activity tracker this isn’t your best bet. If you want a smart watch that feels like a real watch and looks like a watch then this is for you. It’s not the fastest, but it doesn’t feel “like a piece of tech” on my wrist. Feels like a really nice watch.
