For many years now, I’ve been an admirer and wearer of Fossil watches. Fossil makes good looking watches. I’ve had other basic-looking smartwatches and decided it was time to add some style. The Gen 5e provides that style, with a little bling. I like that they made a 42mm version, however it is the largest smartwatch I’ve own. I must say though, after wearing it for a week, it doesn’t seem too big. I am a dedicated Android user so finally having a Wear OS watch is proving to be quite a treat. I love the seamless extension the watch is for my Google Pixel 4. A new feature, for me, is the call features on the watch. Wow! When I answered my first call on my watch I was very amazed. I could hear the caller very clearly and the caller didn’t even know I was talking on a watch. I’m very impressed with the mic and speaker capabilities in this watch. In regards to fitness tracking, the watch seems to have 2 apps that can be utilized: Fossil Wellness and Google Fit. I’m not sure why there would be 2 apps, but I feel they could do without adding the Wellness app. It seems to be a less robust version of Goole Fit. One day, I took 2 walks around my neighborhood, taking the exact same route. According to the Wellness app, I walked 0.06 miles farther than Google Fit and had a very jagged path as seen on the map. It logged this as a “workout”. Using Google Fit for my 2nd walk, I was able to set it as a Walk and the map displayed a smoother path. Not a huge difference between the 2, other than being able to select a specific kind of workout using Google Fit. I’m guess that since the Wellness app thinks I walked in a zigzag manner, it wanted to give credit for the extra distance. One feature that I cannot seem to find is automatic workout detection. This is something that I had on a previous smartwatch and found it to be a useful feature… especially when you have your hands full with walking dogs. Another really nice feature is the different battery modes, though it is something that I’m still trying to understand. My daytime use of the watch is in Daily Mode. With average usage, I am able to get very close to 2 days on one charge. I fully charged it one morning at 10:00am and it lasted until 8:00pm the following evening when it died. The thing I’m having a challenge with is overnight charging. My routine, as it was with my last smartwatch, is to wear it during the day and take it off at night. As mentioned, it needs to be charged every 2 nights. I place my watch on the charger before I go to bed. The charger is plugged into an outlet timer that automatically shuts off after 2 hours. So far, every time I’ve charged my watch in this manner, I wake up to the battery level being at around 35%. One night, I put the watch in Time Only mode before placing on the charger. In the AM it was at 35%. Two other nights, I put the watch into Custom Mode. In this mode, you are allowed to set individual features on or off. I set ALL features off… bluetooth, GPS, WiFi, screen, NFC, alerts all off. In the AM, the battery was at 37%. On my phone, in the Wear OS app, I checked out the Watch battery usage since the last charge, which was the previous night. It showed Watch idle - 38%, Android system - 10%, Bluetooth - 8%, Fit - 8%, and a few others using 3% or less. I am stumped as to why these items are using so much battery life overnight with everything turned off. I’m going to try to work with Fossil customer support to try to get this mystery solved. Other than the night time charging issue, this is actually a great watch. I love finally having a “Google” watch. It has all the basic smartwatch features, and more. The interface is well designed and the features are easy to customize to your needs.

The look of this watch is beautiful but it does not work well. You cannot text with this watch neither can you hold a conversation longer than a minute through the watch. This watch was difficult to sync with my iphone. It syn the first time but then it kept asking me to sync the watch to my phone and the Bluetooth would not find it. This watch may work well with a droid but if you have an iphone, DO NOT PURCHASE THIS WATCH. I took it back to the store the same day it was delivered to my home.
