Great alternative to Galaxy Watch

I had the Gen 5 before this one and I am impressed. Faster charging with the new base (compatible with previous gen charger but you lose out on fast charging), uses the same band size so I can continue to use standard 22mm watch bands, and the charging contact rings on the bottom of the watch are now embedded in the casing, so it won't separate from the body like all the Gen 5 and rebranded Gen 5 watches (Diesel, Michael Kors, etc) were plagued with.

This watch is so cool. You have to try it. The battery life is an improvement. I prefer to have multiple days of battery life. I am upgrading from the Fossil Gen 5. I am a simple user time, messages, Google pay, and running app is a must for me.

I’m going to try and write this review on the watch itself and not so much Wear OS, even though some of the features might get overlapped. This is my first Android watch to own, and I have to say I’m pretty impressed for a non-tech watch company to make a smart watch like this.
The looks of the watch are less than appealing, when the watch is off it reminds me of a watch you had growing up as a teenager. Its lightweight and comes with the rubber band which fits nice and comfortably on your wrist, but nothing really innovative about it which I think is important when wanting to stand out in this industry. However, once the watch turns on it truly becomes alive. The colors are rich and the display is attractive. Initially syncing to my phone was quick and easy. The screen shows a lot of information and can be a lot to take in at first, but the watch does give you some tutorials on the basics.
I kept the default face because it seemed to be the most informative, and there weren’t many other faces to choose from within Watch OS, but the watch did include an app called Facer, a store that provides a large selection of watch faces to choose from, most of which appear to be at a minimal cost. The default face gives you lots of health information (once each is individually enabled) that allows you to quickly check activity and health readings by a touching each corner which is quite convenient. Navigating the watch was a bit of a learning curve. It could have been a little more responsive at times when it came to screen touches and button pushes, a few instances I had to multi-tap or button push to get it to do what I wanted, but hasn’t been too bad.
You need to enable some options to make the watch more enjoyable such as Tilt to Wake and touch to wake when the screen is off, otherwise the screen just stays off until you push one of the side buttons. I also never got an alert for a low battery. Sure I can manually check my battery life by swiping down, but its nice to get a heads up when you are below a certain percent. This could probably be fixed based on a different face that shows the battery percentage. When the watch was nearly dead, it went into a battery saving mode which just showed the time and offered no additional features. When the battery gets low (around 10%) the tilt and touch screen feature to turn the screen on no longer work, kind of aggravating with no warning and then all of sudden your screen won’t come on without extra work.
Luckily the charge is pretty quick. From what I’ve read, Fossil has substantially increased the charging time from the previous model, it was less than an hour until it was fully charged again. The battery did last me a full day, but I haven’t used it for tracking exercise or activities for extended periods of time, which I’m sure would drain the battery much quicker.
Another thing I’m not a big fan of is the watch seems to reset to the homescreen when navigating through the watch pretty quickly. I’ll be reading something or looking at options, and 2 seconds later I’m back at the home screen. Also some things didn’t work as smoothly as I liked such as sending text messages or being able to make phone calls from my watch, but I’m going to give Fossil the benefit of the doubt and assume it’s a Watch OS limitation. I can still check messages and receive calls though.
But to be honest, I’m impressed with the some of the options that Fossil included for health and exercise readings. I won’t list them all as they’re already listed above, just make sure you enable them to start reading and working. I can quickly check my sleep, blood/oxygen, heart rate, calories, steps, and cardio fitness level just by touching those options on the main screen. I have yet to try out Google Pay with the watch.
Overall I think the watch is a good product with room for improvement, but nothing a software update couldn’t fix. I think the price should drop to be more competitive, and the latest Wear OS won’t be available for it until later next year. Fossil is moving in the right direction though.

Nice Smartwatch with Wear OS2

Fossil Gen 6 Smartwatch 44mm
Nice watch even though it is using the Wear OS 2 with Wear OS 3 being available sometime in 2022. The 44mm size with 22mm silicone strap works for both men and women and the watch is well constructed and has a nice simple style to it with the digital time setting being easy to read. The AMOLED Panel is clear and sharp. The watch is rated at 3ATM with most swim-proof watches having a rating of 5ATM I would be careful in regards to water other than light splashing sweat or rain. The battery life is sufficient to last the day and it charges quickly – in less than a hour. If you use a GPS workout that battery life plunges quite quickly. The watch does not include a charging brick but does have a magnetic charge cord and will use a standard USB charge port. The watch has a lot of built in features and add-ons so testing all of these in a week doesn’t give you enough time to explore everything. Instructions are through the Wear OS platform. I used this with a 1yr old Samsung Android phone.
The norm for Wear OS, you swipe up and down, right and left to peek at settings, notifications, Google Assistant, and pinned Tiles, such as your heart rate or step count.
Workout mode – includes indoor and outdoor settings. Both track heartrate and calories and outdoor counts steps as well. The watch gives you easy to read charts showing stats from the workout in each category and retains this information.
Weather – easy to read, shows current temperature predicted highs and lows.
Steps – you can set up a target goal for heart and steps and it keeps track of your steps for the day and how many calories you burn.
Oxygen level – gets a reading of your current oxygen level and keeps a log of your readings
Sleep – measures your light and deep sleep times – even has a graph to show when during the night you are sleeping light or deep.
Google assistant – did not test this feature
Phone – by connecting to cell phone thru Bluetooth can receive and answer calls You can also use it to call people, either on your contacts list, recent phone calls list or dial a number. The audio sounds good on both ends of the call no matter if you are receiving or calling someone. You can also just end an incoming call – handy on those spam calls.
Swiping left or up connects you to your Gmail list – which you can mark the notices as read as well as read your email.
It also has an option to connect you to the settings menu for google services.
Swiping down gives you the settings menu and shows you the battery level.
I tested all the items listed above and the watch preformed in an exception manner. The batter life is sufficient to last the day and it charges quickly,
One quirk I had with the watch – when I was wearing a sweater or heavy shirt that covered the watch for most of my workday, twice it seems to go to sleep and did not respond when I received a phone call. The watch is set to be always on, screen timeout is set at 5 seconds, the theater mode or airplane mode were not turned on, and it was not a battery issue as the watch woke up once I interacted with it.

I probably got a defective model but after a month my battery would not hold or charge consistently and even one day got very hot and burned my wrist. Prior to this I liked the look of the classic watch, however I did not like that the Google assist button would constantly go off.

I am enjoying my new Fossil Gen 6 Smart Watch. This is my first Smart Watch, so it has been fun trying out all the features and figuring out which functions can make things more convenient. Following are what I have found as pros and cons:
PROS:
- I like the look of the watch. It is great that you can select from a variety of different face styles, based on your preference. It is very light weight on your arm, making it easy to wear all day and also at night, if you want to track the quality of your sleep. I also like that the watch is not real thick and lays flat to your arm, as this makes it easy to wear under a long sleeve button shirt. Some watch heads are so big these days that you can't wear them under a dress shirt with buttoned sleeves.
- It was pretty easy to pair to my iPhone and start using the basic functions. It also comes with an on screen tutorial and the Wear OS App also gives help information.
- There are a variety of helpful Apps already preloaded on the watch and you can download other apps also. You can control many of the settings right from your watch or also access settings on the phone.
- There are a number of activity tracking apps that can be set up to use on the watch, including the Sleep tracker, Heart Rate, Blood Oxygen, fitness tracking, etc. These apps make it very convenient to keep track of a variety of health related stats.
- I can get notifications on the watch from a variety of apps on my phone, such as phone, text messages, emails, and most other apps that will send you notifications on the phone can also send them to the watch. This makes it easy to not miss any notifications. For example, when in work meetings, I can't typically look at my phone, but my watch will vibrate to let me know a notification was received and I can typically look at my watch without being too obvious.
- If you sign into any Google account on the Wear OS App and pair to your watch, you can then use the Google assistant on your watch to ask questions or perform tasks.
- Considering how small the watch speaker has to be, it sounds surprisingly good and is clear. You can set it for different volume levels or turn the speaker off if you do not want sound. You can also set it for Theater mode or airplane mode or just turn on do not disturb. Phone calls even sound surprisingly good for such a small device. You can set it up to answer calls and talk directly on your watch, or set it up to answer the phone from your watch, but talk and listen on the phone.
- There are several different battery modes also, including normal daily mode, extended mode, and time only mode. Plus you can set when you want it to automatically switch to extended mode based on remaining battery life. These all allow you to conserve battery if you need to do so. I have found I can wear it all day in full daily mode with a fair amount of use and I only deplete about half the battery by the end of the day. Of course it depends which apps you use regularly.
- It comes with a charging cord, which you can use with any USB charging block. It charges incredibly fast. At the end of day I can plug it in and it charges fully in about a half hour.
Cons:
- I wish it came with a manual to walk through all the functionality. It only has a short manual to tell you how to pair it with your phone. Many of the apps have their own instructions or tutorials and there is a basic tutorial for the phone. However, I have found myself searching the online help for answers on how to perform various functions. I feel like there are likely more things that the watch can do that I haven't realized or figured out yet. A more detailed manual would be helpful and save some time.
- I feel like the Wear OS App and the watch are probably more optimized for Android phones. I have an Apple phone and it seems like they have it set up so most things work, but there are some functions you can do on the watch if you have an Android phone that you can't do with an iPhone. For example, I can receive notifications of a text message received, but as an iPhone user, I cannot reply to the text via my watch, whereas an Android user can. I haven't run into anything else that is very inconvenient yet. I will say they seem to have done a pretty good job making these latest Fossil watches work well with the iPhones.
- You will need to have a Google account to do some functions. This includes using the Google Assistant, as it does not work with Siri on your iPhone. This is not really a big deal as you can set up a Google account for free, but just something to be aware of. I already had a Google Home account for some Smart devices, so I just used that.
All in all, the Fossil Gen 6 Smart Watch is a great watch. I have listed a few cons of minor items to be aware of, but I feel those are pretty minor inconveniences. The Pros by far outweigh the Cons, as these watches really do a nice job of making your daily routines more efficient and providing a lot of convenience. I was previously skeptical that a smart watch would be that useful, since I always have my phone on me anyway, but it really does work hand-in-hand with the phone and make a number of things much more convenient.
I highly recommend this watch!
