Fine if you use Google Voice/Hangouts

I bought this because I am almost exclusively on wifi, so I do not even come close to using 1G a month. I decided that since the price for 1 year of service was cheaper than one month with most companies, it was worth a try. Things to know: If you want to keep your old cell phone number it costs extra. So I chose not to keep my old number. FreedomPop requires you to use their app for making phone calls and texting. The app sucks. Most of the time, it will not even open -- just shows that it is endlessly loading. I did use it once to call a friend. There was an awful sound/noise interference/echoing, plus we were disconnected or I lost the ability to hear her several times. The solution is to get a free phone number from Google Voice and use Google Voice/Hangouts/and Hangouts Dialer for all calls and texts instead of the phone number and app provided by FreedomPop. It probably uses some small amount of data that way but there have been no technical or quality issues to deal with. (I have 12 days left in this month and still have 936 MB left, so I'm not concerned.) I am glad I did not pay to keep my old number, only to not be able to use it due to the malfunctioning crappy Freedompop app. I think if you want to keep your old number it would be smarter to pay to port it to Google Voice instead. I had no issues with installing the SIM. My LG G6 is both GSM and CDMA. Because I did not pay for transferring my phone number, I did not have to provide my credit card number so I don't anticipate any way to be billed for charges I did not authorize or for more data that I don't want like some people have complained about.

While I haven't activated this sim yet, I have a couple of other Freedompop lines. The LTE sims use AT&T, and the coverage in my area is very good, though AT&T doesn't have LTE in my area like Verizon and T-Mobile do. The calls and texts have to go thru the Freedompop app vs. the normal apps on your phone. I find on the sim I have in an iPhone its easy to use and is ok, but for Android, the interface is clunky and hard to use. Freedompop used to let you earn another 500mb of free data but recently lowered that to 50mb, not even noticible. While you get "unlimited" calls and texts, including voicemail and MMS/picture messages (the free Freedompop plans dont include these), Freedompop will nickle and dime you for every other thing, including support. If you don't pay them for premium support, I hope you don't have a problem as your choice is their community forums only.

The sign in and activation process works pretty seamless, however their web portal is not great. The problem comes from the payment portion. although this card is pre loaded with 12 month of voice/txt, if you wish to purchase a few GB of data, that can be tricky. I was not able to edit/change or charge any thing. so at the end. if you just need talk and txt. it would work, and hopefully by next year, their payment portal would work or else there is not way to top it off or renew. so as of right now. it is good for dumb phone only.

Be warned. The service does not include voicemail. If you want voicemail, that is about $25/year extra payable only with credit card and be willing to accept automatic billing for items such as data overage. Also, even if you pay for voicemail, you cannot check your voicemail from a landline or friend's phone (because special app must be installed). Imagine in an emergency (like you lost your phone) and you cannot check your messages.

This is cheap phone service in terms of money. But call connect fail most of the time. In service it’s worst in all America. You can’t put your life on this phone number.
