Okay, this is not a review of the movie itself. I love Friday the 13th. It is one of the most original horror movies ever made. This is a review for this "horrific" 4K release from Paramount. First, I just wondered how much more can they really improve on since the Deluxe Version Blu-ray a few years back. Well, that one had a good menu, background music, and ALL features, even the original theatrical trailer. All scenes looked good, even the dark scenes as you could see who was where, doing what. Great release. THIS 4K, not a good one folks. I watched the opening scenes, as it was a nighttime, etc. The two camp counselors wearing yellow shirts up there making out and then getting wacked, you couldn't make out there features well at all and it was overly dark. I stopped right there after the girl screams, you could barely see her face. I put in the Deluxe version Blu-ray, and watched the opening scenes and it was so much better, overall. I just don't know what Paramount did in this one, but it is way too dark. The day scenes were okay, with minimal improvement over the Blu-ray. The sound? Well, no improvement there. We get the same audio as we did on the Deluxe Blu-ray. All features are on the 4K, except, NO original theatrical trailer. For a 1980 horror movie, Paramount could have done a better job on this one. I would pass on this one and keep the Deluxe Blu-ray version. THAT is all you need. You do not need this one. As a longtime fan of the movie, I am disappointed.

Nice addition to the slasher genre and showed how successful the genre was. Looks decent on 4K

Wasn’t a fan of the 4K restoration. I feel like it took away from what the movie normally looks like. The Shout Factory Blu-ray release looked much better to me.

This 4K edition has bad looking HDR and it is missing the original audio that was found on earlier editions.

This is by far the best this movie has ever looked. There is some grain to keep it looking original but cleaned up. Having an Oled tv as the best possible picture, they’re are a couple of scenes that are too dark but beautiful otherwise.

    Something is off

The coloring is off on this UHD version. I cant describe it in technical terms, but it looks like you’re watching the movie through dark sunglasses during daylight scenes. Skin tones throughout the movie look either orange or like that manila craft paper. Very unnatural, make sure to turn the HDR off.

    Terrible UHD transfer

First off, I really wanted to like this transfer. I'm a big fan of the films. The picture quality ranges from mediocre to downright awful. Highlights are severely blown out, overly grainy, and a constant color shift is present in them. The clouds in the daytime look as though an X-Ray filter has been applied. The color red is muted, and/or often looks orange. The contrast level can be off, causing skin tones to look muddy. Skin tones can look red, with yellow undertones, very unnatural. Black levels can be way off, especially in the daytime scenes. Black crush is present at times. For some reason they cropped the film, and in some instances zoomed in slightly. These are just some of the things, I noticed off of the top of my head. No Dolby Atmos, same 5.1 soundtrack. Same extras from the 2009 bluray. The 2009 bluray looks better and has more interesting features. No love or care has been put into this release. It is another Paramount cash grab.
