Customers are saying

Customers commend the DriveAssist 51 LMT-S for its excellent camera, which is frequently praised for accident protection, and its user-friendly GPS navigation system. Many appreciate the ease of use and the helpful voice command features. While some users mention limitations in battery life and memory card functionality, the positive feedback on the core features outweighs these concerns.

    Painful, Awful Product

I have been a faithful Garmin user for more than a decade, and this unit has caused me nothing but pain and frustration. 1. Voice Recognition - I work for a radio station and enunciate for a living. It gets it right about 5% of the time. It is awful. And if it weren't so frustrating the "guesses" it gives for locations is absurd. 2. Camera - The camera downloads movies through the Virb app. The controls are not intuitive. And you have to use the Garmin Virb app to view videos. It has great difficulty commuicating with the GPS unit, and like everything else with this unit, it takes several steps and tight choreography to get it to work. I was cut off in traffic yesterday and I have been trying for three hours to find the spot in the video but it just does not work. It only lets me download two minutes at a time, and the slider bar that one would normally use to locate video does not work. It keeps snapping back to the starting point. 3. Traffic. Unlike past models, you have to pair this with your phone EVERY TIME you get in the car. Yet another "add one more step to make it difficult to use," concept. And it often has trouble pairing. 4. The problems with this very expensive machine go on and on. If it did what it promised, it would be an excellent machine. But I get the feeling it was slapped together by people who never have and never will use this in traffic. This is probably my seventh Garmin GPS unit and is the only one I wish I could just throw away, but I have invested too much money in it. Instead, it sits attached to my windshield reminding me of broken promises and the money I wasted on it. Oh, and it eats up memory cards - and does not read them well. My unit and the VIRB app continue to remind me I have no card in the slot. It is brand new and I have used it about a month. After about three or five reboots it magically reads the card and realizes there are saved images on it.

I have owned so many Garmins over the years I don't know which number this is, but I do know it's the best one yet. It is great in every way, better detail and info. Traffic reporting has never been great but everything else is.

Nice but VERY POOR CAMERA PLACEMENT

I have owned many Garmin GPS units as I use them in my business. This is the first one that I have been disappointed in. The camera is placed such just BELOW the mounting socket so that it can only be used with the suction cup mount on the windshield, which typically starts to fail within a few months dropping your unit to the dash or floor. When you try to use it with one of the dash mounts all you see in the camera is the stem of the mount. Garmin offers minimal options for GPS with cameras. My last one, now in one of my business vans, has the camera mounted to the driver's side and it can be adjusted. It works fine with any of the mounts. Garmin blew it on this one and I really wish that they offered more options with cameras as with today's distracted drivers looking at their phones it is not a question of if someone will hit you but when will they. If there was another Garmin option I would take this back but it is the only one that I could find at Best Buy or on Amazon.

The mounting bracket on this model is reversible, this allows the DriveAssist to work with our portable friction mount. Garmin

A downgrade in screen, mount, traffic

Waited two years to upgrade to GPS with integrated camera. If I was not passed the return date, I would return this unit. I have spent $100 trying to work around the following issues. The screen is so reflective all I see is my knuckles and the steering wheel even on the brightest screen setting if facing towards the sun OR bright light coming in the side windows, no matter where I put the unit. None of the high-contrast map display options even come close to the Garmin I replaced, they are all muted and poorly back lit. The camera is placed directly in the center mount line of sight so on my third purchase to get it mounted to avoid blocking the camera which only has horizontal adjustments (no vertical) so your dash positions are severely limited especially in a pickup. The power cord assumes you will dismount the whole unit using the suction lever, instead of a positive base seat and top snap in clip like my previous Garmin, the clip provided has no positive position snap to mount or dismount, there's this un-intuitive squeeze or press or whatever I have still not figured out, that requires remounting the unit, getting the cord out of the way, then re-calibrating the camera forward position. And NO, a new traffic sensing power cable won't fix the mount design issues unless you just capitulate to these really disappointing design deficiencies. And yes, I am a high usage Garmin fan, but not for this unit. The only reason I know I finally got an integrated camera is because the unit asks me to re-center the camera every time I mount the unit. Yea, right. The engineering design assumptions obviously did not take place behind the wheel of a vehicle, particularly a F150 or similar type dash and windshield.

    Surprise about traffic.

Traffic avoidance in the Los Angeles freeway system is a benefit I want. Family members use the car. And if they have a smart-phone it must be paired to have traffic benefits. Mom has an old cell phone - no good. What if the member does not have the phone with them? I think I bought the wrong unit. Glare seems to be a problem, but it is probably because of the windshield angle w low positioning on the windshield. I have not even tried the camera, but it does not seem designed for low on the windshield.

    GPS is great but..........

I was attracted to the Garmin to, hopefully, get rid of my smart phone. I noticed the link required for some features but not Trip Advisor. The TripAdvisor data in the Garmin does not match what is on TripAdvisor's website. I was in a small town in Wyoming looking for a place to eat. The well established restaurant we ate at was not in my Garmin. It was on the TA website. I can only wonder what else is missing. I still wonder why I need a separate GPS when my smart phone has a fine GPS and more.

Good GPS, camera not so good

I had problems right away with this GPS. When the SD card got full the GPS would freeze during the route. Garmin replaced the unit and the refurbished one did the same thing. I kept it up to date with the software and it now appears to work ok. The video resolution is not good. I had an incident where another vehicle forced me off the road and left the scene. I needed to get the plate number of the vehicle involved but to my disappointment the plate was not readable and the distance was only about 25 feet. I need a better dash cam.
