The technology is not as modern as I hoped. The graphics are very basic and doesn’t allow for satellite picture overlays.

I bought this to give me extra insurance when I'm off the grid away from reliable cell tower connections for navigation which it has. However, I'm not at all impressed with its usability. For just under half the price of a smartphone you don't get what you'd expect for the money. Smartphones' mapping features exceeds the Garmin GPSMAP by leaps and bounds. Google does a much better job with the visual usability of their map programs than Garmin does. Heck there are also several GPS snartphone apps that blow Garmin's stuff out of the water. In order to get satellite images of the maps onto the device you have to sign up for a subscription (which is free for the first year) then download it to your computer, then to your device. Then the resolution is meh. Also the user interface is clunky. Scrolling around the map is very clunky. Plus there are a lot of features I just can't find myself needing. I wish I could customize the menu option so I wouldn't have to needlessly scroll through the stuff I'll never need when accessing my maps. They have a feature where it connects to your phone but it's just to receive text messages. How about a way that let's my smartphone use the device's reliable GPS connection to power the navigation on the smartphone? I will say that the build of this device is solid for hiking, riding bikes, etc. off the beaten path. I also really appreciate how it just runs on a couple batteries for quite a while. But everything else falls short. I explored the option of getting a GPS extender for my smartphone like Dual Electronics XGPS150A Multipurpose Universal Bluetooth GPS Receiver with extra battery back up. But it came down to do I want the hassle of power management of my phone and GPS receiver when I'm off the grid for multiple days or do I deal with the hassle with the mediocre Garmin? I obviously chose the latter but I'm still not sure if that was the best option.

I bought this to go gold detecting in Arizona using TOPO24 maps but with its built in features it makes a great little hand held for geocaching using GPS

Garmin handheld is excellent; however, it would get 5 stars if it had preinstalled satellite imagery.
Not enough instruction; hard to find the info and takes to long to download the imagery once you do get it.

I've had a few outings with it now and so far all is good. It's a little harder on batteries then I hoped but it could be the battery as well.

Love using it for geocaching only bummer is Garmin charges extra for topo maps when I thought it would already be installed. Misleading label on box Hmmm.

I use the Garmin 64s primarily for off trail navigation and it has not failed me. I have always been a map and compass guy and still am, but I find I use the Garmin more and more. Very happy with the 64S.

Good signal in the trees, compass works better than my cellphone. Interface is a little odd at first, touchscreen would be nice, but it's a huge price jump. Would definitely buy again at this price

Outdated tech. Bought it for a fishing trip. Called Garmin to purchase topographic maps, they direct me to eBay as they do not sell map cards for this model anymore. Do yourself a favor and buy something more modern with a larger screen.

There should be no battery drain while shut down and it will retain waypoints if correctly marked. If you are experiencing these issues we would highly recommend you contact our product support experts at 800-800-1020 or via email at [email protected]

Poor manual

The unit itself is fine but to figure it out one would need a constructive owners manual not the 10 page one furnished with the unit. To save on paper Garmin chose to include a manual that does not aid a new user to work this nicer GPS to its best. I have three other Garmin GPS and they came with a REAL instruction manual . A sad explanation of selling a worthwhile piece of equipment with a really sad aid to using it.
