Great GPS, InReach could use some refinements

I bought this to take hunting as well as gold prospecting in areas where there is no cell coverage. Having the inReach seems like if needed, could make the difference between life & death so I bought it. There are several different data type plans available that need to be purchased at the time of activation in order for emergency communication to be possible. Keep in mind that whatever plan you choose (unless you buy the unlimited plan that’s like $100 a month) you have a limited number of text messages you can use. Bear in mind if you buy a plan that has 40 texts per month, this includes SENT & RECEIVED texts. If you send your spouse 10 texts and she replies to all of them, you’ve just used half of your allotted texts per MONTH. The other complaint I have is the time it takes to send & receive texts via inReach. Even in direct open sky it sometimes can take as much as 10-15 min to send & receive. In my opinion, I’m an actual emergency, 15 minutes could be crucial. Then again, it’s better than not having it at all! My brother who was hunting with me has the older inReach by DeLorme, and the map packs his came with (specifically the hunter packs) have a way more detailed Topo layer than the new inReach comes with. Overall though, navigating is accurate and the controls & features fairly easy to understand & utilize. Pairing with my iPhone is a great feature too as you can utilize the Earthmate app to view current location on maps, send & receive messages etc. You can also pair it to a iPad which is even better for aging eyes! Overall, I’d recommend the inReach Explorer Plus for its ruggedness, build quality and just having the piece of mind that you’ve got a connection to family & friends in the event of an emergency or just to update loved ones on the progress of your hunt or latest adventure off the grid. With future software and map upgrades, it’ll make a great product even better!

It doesn't take me very long to get away from the Austin area before my Sprint service craps out on me! That's where this communicator has been a life saver! I am an avid outdoorsman and I find myself off the beaten path several times a year. This unit is a great tool for me to be able to communicate with my family as I am out on sometimes dangerous expeditions. The carbiner is awesome as I can strap it to my backpack or even sun visor while driving in my truck. It has par tracking and a few other features that come in handy as well! It is a little expensive, but when I need to get in touch with my family or even a rescuer it's already paid for itself over and over again!

Really like this GPS. I have owned this and a SPOT Gen3 and this communicates with a different satellite network MUCH more easily than the SPOT. Even better is two way communication and a color gps map where you can download topos and other styles of maps as a back up to a standard handheld GPS> The monthly plan "was" a few more dollars a month but SPOT has recently raised their prices (mid contract) and you can also only pay for the monthly plan on months you think you'll use it. Much more flexible.

Kept me in touch with my family as I was deep in the mountains elk hunting with no phone service you can activate and deactivate it easily. Safety first always carry one at least have it for a backup to your phone. It works anywhere.

I purchased this unit over a standard GPS for the added piece of mind of emergency communications as I often travel alone into areas without cell phone coverage. While I haven't tested the emergency communication, the GPS works well.

This is a must have when adventuring in Alaska. There are a lot of areas where you just don’t have cellphone signal. I have my own and decided to buy this one for my son who is a pilot and flys frequently to native villages and all over Alaska. Now I can have peace of mind.

I purchased this prior to several hiking trips I had planned. The set up was easy and the simple fact the I was one button click away from help was a huge comfort. A product that’s well worth the money

This product is cumbersome to use. It is also expensive to use. There must be a more simple device that is less expensive somewhere.
