Great 360 action cam for the rest of us

If you haven't already bought a 360 cam, chances are you're not a pro videographer and are considering adding this to your hobby collection of other 2D cameras. If that's the case, this cam has what you're looking for. A quick word about resolution. This cam has the maximum 5.7k available, but you really can't use it on this camera or any camera unless you have a mega computer and will only watch the videos on a mega computer. I only have one PC, a tower I use for a triple monitor racing simulator, that can even play the 4k video. Your TV's built in app is only 1080. Your phone isn't even 4k. There is really no way in the near future that anyone will consume your video in a 5.7k format. The amount of data that it takes to display a 360 video, because remember even if you're not looking at it the computer has to render it in case you do, is so high I don't think we'll see high-res 360 for quite some time. So that said, this cam's ability to stitch the 4k footage in camera and on a single memory card makes this camera more usable than a lot of the competition. Add in you don't even need to download it, you can post video straight from your phone, this camera is as usable as it comes. Size: for a 360 cam, this is the only true action cam based on size, shock-proof, and replaceable lenses. You can't get interesting 360 video without putting the camera right in the action, and you can do that with this without stressing it will die. It's small and light enough to mount anywhere, and has a low profile to not get in your line of sight. Oh yeah, and waterproof without a case to 10 meters. GMetrix: If you've never experienced the data capture Garmin offers in their Virb cameras, you're in for a treat. So many options, but it gives another tool to show viewers how crazy your adventures really are. Take a minute and do some research online, and you'll see the single biggest difference between this cam and others is that it has its own data acquisition. Slow motion: someone at Garmin was smart enough to know that if you can capture 2 cameras at 60fps, you can capture one at 120. That gives you a true slow motion action camera. This is an undersold value of this camera. Hyperframe editor: you can take the video in the free Garmin app and self-direct a 1080p movie using all of the video captured. Cool shots like little planet are possible and can add nice movement to liven up your videos. Spatial audio: an overlooked feature of this cam is spatial audio. This has 4 mics, one on each side. This really matters in VR viewing, as you turn your head the audio follows. Only reason I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars is the live broadcasting doesn't really work as advertised. It doesn't work with Facebook period. And for YouTube mobile you have to have a thousand subscribers to broadcast live. So unless I add about 950 subscribers I still can't use that feature. Garmin should consider setting up their own site for live broadcasting videos. Overall, you'll use this cam in a lot of cool ways. You'll still have use for 2D cam's, but this will be a big part of my capturing in car and airplane footage in my adventures moving forward.

Shoot 360 (up to 5.7k) and stills,time-lapse, single direction 4K. Pretty cool. New software update brings impressive features like the ability choose angles and make smooth pans in a 360 video to render a single perspective polished 1080 video. Software interface a little counterintuitive. Battery power could be better. Consider buying the powered tripod mount and an external USB battery pack for MTB and other adventure videos.

    Fits My Needs

I wanted a camera to replace my Hero4; one I could use for a goalie cam at soccer games. I also wanted a 360 camera. This does both for me. The specs aren't the best out there but some key features I like are: 1. Tripod powered mount. For extended recording sessions at games. 2. Ability to just record on one lens 3. Water proofing and replaceable lens. 4. Ant+ support with G-metrix for when I cycle. Cool to see power output and mph while riding. So far the camera has been working for me. These are some features that no other camera has, that suits all my needs. I've used it in Mammoth snowboarding in 0 degree temps pouring snow and it worked flawlessly. Everyone has different needs.

This camera does a very good job stitching the video. 4k resolution is good but video setting are not adjustable from the device itself like the gopro for instance. The VIRB edit program is very good on making these adjustment to video. Overall its a good camera.

I have had this camera for several months now and use it for everything from, swimming to playing at the park. The video is stitched together nicely and the quality is great, I literally drop the files from the SD card into FCPX and have 360 editing, its great. Garmin is great about keeping the camera up to date with feature updates via new firmware.

I have had several VIRB and GoPro cameras in the past and have always found the VIRb cameras to be easier to use, longer battery life and more predictable than the GoPro cameras. The 360 VIRB is a fantastic camera and continues with Garmins high quality as the previous models are.
