Daily I Want to Smash It with a Sledge Hammer

This microwave is attractive, quiet, heats well, and has all the basic functions we need: hence a Consumer Reports "Best Buy." We bought it to replace a GE Spacesaver that served us well for an impressive 35+ years (RIP). My husband and I work from home and use the microwave all day long. We are not picky; we just need basic features to reheat food and beverages. Despite this microwave's good qualities, I deeply regret buying it. (I wish we had simply flushed $200 directly down the toilet and saved all our installation time.) I'd return it but we are past Best Buy's short 15-day return window. (With any luck this one will die within a year as it has for so many other buyers.) Until then, we are trying to tough it out because we hate to waste our $$ and all our installation time. Multiple times a day I want to smash this microwave with a sledge hammer. Why? We underestimated the ongoing annoyance of the poorly designed keypad and a "done" buzzer that (like a smoke alarm) won't shut off on its own. In particular, I hate that an appliance that was once my slave is now my master. Example: if I heat a beverage and run upstairs, I MUST race back to the kitchen when summoned: otherwise the beeper keeps chirping intermittently--annoying my nearby husband. It does NOT shut off on its own as our previous microwave did. Also, in the past, I was able to use my microwave timer for other tasks---but no more. I had to buy a portable timer so I don't have to keep racing back to the kitchen as summoned by the microwave. In addition, the poorly designed keypad is a constant annoyance. It's hard to read and use because of: 1. the poor color contrast between the button text and background (for us light gray on white) 2. no backlighting and 3. poor button placement. I hate that the most used "Add 30 seconds" is buried in the middle of other less-used buttons like "Turntable." Ideally it should be in the bottom right--easier to find and closer to "Start." I tried to adjust to the layout for several weeks. But in the end I got tired of scanning and just put bright stickers by the most needed buttons. (And yes, it's not fashionable to have bright stickers on your microwave. But it works--whereas the keypad layout doesn't.) The first rule of design is that Form should follow Function..and that doesn't happen with this microwave. As Randy Pausch taught his students (by destroying an annoying VCR with a sledgehammer on his first day of class): When you “make something hard to use, people get upset. They become so angry that they want to destroy it. We don’t want to create things that people will want to destroy.” And that is precisely what GE has done with this microwave. It's too bad that such a nice microwave is spoiled by a poor user interface: but it is. And for that reason, I give it a single star.

First, I'm easy to please, and don't use the microwave for anything more complicated than heating up frozen food or boiling water. I've not tested out any of the more advanced features, and can't comment on them. I read a bunch of online reviews in making a product selection, and overall most people seemed pleased with this unit. The complaints seemed to be about minor stuff, like the button labels being hard to see in low light or the dark, which is true, but it doesn't bother me (I turn on the overhead light so I can see the buttons). I installed the unit myself, am not a pro, just a regular old DIYer. Installation was straightforward, the instructions were clear, and all the parts I needed were present. I ended up using some different lag bolts because the ones included with the install kit are not very beefy: they take a philips head, or you can use a 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet (can't remember which), and the philips receptacle on the screw stripped out quickly when applying a reasonable amount of torque. I tossed them and used the stainless lag bolts with a square head inset from the last install. The instructions seemed a little bit unclear to me about how the fan blower motor housing needs to be manipulated. The pictures are good, but I believe some of the words are in error. But if you understand what the basic premise is of what you're doing, it will work out fine. The instructions provide a drilling template for the overhead screws, and everything matched up well. The mounting plate seemed a little bit flimsy, but seems to work fine. It fit perfectly into the spot where the previous microwave went, and the microwave unit itself also fit perfectly. As far as operation goes, I found the unit to be quieter than its predecessor, and can't say if this unit is more or less quiet than other current units. It does what it is supposed to do, heat stuff up. I like the way the rotating plate sits on the spindle. It is simple and works well. I also like the generous amount of light the unit provides from the bottom of the unit to the top of the stove. The door feels solid, and the open/close internal latching mechanism also has a solid feel to it. It has been in operation now for about a month, with no hiccups or trouble. If things change, I'll update this review accordingly.

    Solid Microwave, check your dimensions

I took measurements of my old microwave and verified that this one had the same dimensions. However, upon installation, this microwave projects out from the wall over my stove almost an additional inch. This is because this microwave's mounting hardware attaches to the back splash wall. My old microwave was attached to the cupboard above it, so there was nothing between the back of that microwave and the back splash wall. At first, I was really upset about this extra projection. I was also worried that the indoor venting (I don't have a vent pipe to the outside) would blow upwards into the cupboard above it since the exhaust vent points upward (my old microwave's vent blew straight out into the room which was awful for us tall people because it would blow directly into our eyes). However, this extra projection into the room actually ensured that the exhaust vents completely cleared the cupboard doors and therefore I don't have to worry about warping the wood. The microwave feels solid. Some microwave doors feel plastic and flimsy, but this one feels very solid. The handle feels sturdy (you simply jerk on the handle to pull the door open, there is not a button to press to pop open the door). The keypad doesn't seem to collect any finger prints. The turntable is surprisingly large and moves quietly during operation. I like that this microwave has a feature to stop the turntable from rotating. This feature is really helpful when I've put in a 13"x9" casserole dish of leftovers to reheat.

Apparently made to only last 1-year...

I threw out a 30-year old microwave that worked great, just because I wanted stainless steel vs white appliances... Before choosing one, I checked Consumer Reports, and bought the (this) best rated microwave by GE, which was also on sale at Best Buy. It worked for 1-year, and then it started tripping the breaker. When I turned the breaker back on I could use the light, exhaust fan, and clock, but not the microwave. I had an Electrician change the breaker, but it still kept tripping it. He tried plugging it into a different outlet/breaker, and it tripped that one too...so it was clear that the microwave was the problem. While conducting these tests, the microwave then turned off completely, died. I called Best Buy, but they said the 1-year manufacturer warranty has expired, so they can't help. Seems like it was made to only last 1-year... They offered a Technician to come out for $99 p/visit. REALLY?!? This is the WORST microwave oven I've ever had. GE should be ashamed. My husband reminds me daily how I threw out a good old appliance to purchase a crappy new one. I will never hear the end of it...and now I have no microwave. I'm so upset!!!

I bought this model in July 2016. It is now Oct 2018 and it no longer works. About a week ago it tripped the breaker. After reseting the breaker and testing a few times and trying it plugged into a different outlet on a different breaker (which resulted in tripping the breaker again), there was a spark in the unit itself and now it is totally dead (before, once the breaker was reset, the clock and lights worked; the breaker tripped when the unit itself was turned on to heat something up. now, it is dead, no clock no nothing. obviously some kind of electrical problem internal to the unit. very disappointing. this replaced an older equivalent GE model that lasted 10 years. obviously they are not making them with the same quality as 10 years ago. and of course the warranty is only 1 year which is a joke. if they are only going to be accountable for this operating for 1 year, this should be a lot cheaper. Very disappointing. Piece of crap. And my house is full of GE appliances too. Going to shop around for something else now. Fool me twice shame on me, right?

I replaced a ten year old Spacemaker XL1800 (HDM1853WJ) with this and overall I’m very pleased. I wanted to share my thoughts. Installation: First, make sure you turn the vent motor and install the charcoal filter (included) if it’s going to recirculate. This is laid out very clearly in the instructions and is simple to do. One of the reasons I bought another GE was because I was hoping to be able to use the existing wall bracket and maybe the holes required in the cabinet above the microwave would also line up. Got lucky with the former, not the latter. It sat on the wall bracket OK, and although the holes pattern was close, I had to drill new holes. Use: As another reviewer pointed out, it’s difficult to see if your food is boiling over. Cooking oatmeal poses a challenge! It’s not impossible to see, but harder than it was with my previous microwave. I also don’t like that it “forgets” you put food in it. What I mean is that if you put food in it, walk away for a few minutes, then come back and turn it on it tells you to put food in the microwave. All you have to do is open and close the door, but still a pain and different from the previous GE I owned. On the positive side, it does a fine job doing what it’s supposed to do. Plenty of power settings and cooking options. I also like that it has two levels (high and low) for both the surface light and the vent fan.

Consumer reports rated near the top

I don't "trust" consumer reports for everything. I remember one time they down rated a great motorcycle (I liked and bought) because they tested it and found the flip up gas cap popped up after a crash. What about the positive weighting of great handling, rocket ship acceleration, great hardware etc. The GE 3160 microwave tested well. However, I have found these inexpensive microwaves have small power supplies that tend to burn out more easily. Look at the more expensive computers and you will see nice heavy duty power supplies compared to the budget computers. The average life of microwaves is around 9 years and I will be happy if I get that lifespan from this inexpensive unit. The big issue with this microwave is the flimsy door and chassis. The door is not rigid and the closure is locked via 2 fragile plastic clips. Others have complained about this and once one of the clips cracks it is all over. SOLUTION: Do not slam the door. When you close the door bring so so gently. In one motion close the door up to the 2 holes that lock the 2 door door clips without closing the door all the way. Be sure the 2 male clips are aligned into the openings, then GENTLY push the door home so the clips lock in place. Lotsa luck and hope this helps you.

    Disappointed with GE Microwave

My 18 year old GE Microwave died and after looking at several 2018 models/makes in my Best Buy store and online, I decided to go with a GE that fit the space over my cook top, was shiny black and had a similar panel to our previous one, so that my husband could figure out how to use it. When it was installed and plugged in, I noticed that the panel was almost unreadable - there was very little contrast between the pale, white lettering and the black background on the buttons. On my 18 year old panel (and online), the lettering is distinct. Now I must put on reading glasses to see the words. The door has a window, but I can't see what my food is doing during cooking, reheating, etc. due to the heavy black grid on the glass. The interior light inside is very dim, as well. The digital time on the panel is an extremely, bright white, unlike all of my other digital appliance clocks, temperatures, etc. which are green. I like the beverage button on this microwave because it gives you choices in ounces - 4, 8, 12, 16 oz. Also, the size of the turntable is large enough to accommodate dinner plates and glass baking dishes.

I built my house in 1999 and this unit makes the third I have installed over that time period. The Expected Useful Life (EUL) of this item is typically considered 7 years although the original GE Profile Space-Maker lasted 11 and the previous GE Profile Space-Maker only went a bit over 6 years thus the EUL is a very subjective estimate. This new unit was on sale and it cost me $179.99, which is a good price. It has more than sufficient settings and features and it seems to be relatively sturdy although the general build quality does not seam as robust as the two previous units. The door has a hollow plastic feel to it when if shuts. However, so far so good! It installed fairly easily into the mounting points the previous unit had without much correction although the screws did not match up completely and some new drilling had to occur. It is the SS that is smudge resistant and that is a nice feature for this appliance or any of your other stainless steel appliances. I prefer black which was what the original motif was but I was overruled by the powers that be! If you can vent the exhaust to the exterior I strongly recommend that as the recirculating methodology does not clear sufficiently on this unit or any unit, in my opinion and the opinion of ASHRAE. If you do vent inside you should change or clean you filters every six months. Beyond that for a buck 79 it is the bomb. Good luck

I bought this as a replacement for my 10-year-old GE microwave. It does the basic things you expect from a microwave so no complaints there. Some annoyances but not deal breakers: - The layout of the buttons is terrible... well... not intuitive. It wouldn't matter as much if you could read them in the evening but since they are not backlit, and the letters are gray on top of black, it's very difficult to impossible to distiguish them without turning the light on. So either I have to turn the light on and press the correct button, or you memorize where things are. The microwave light SHOULD be at the bottom of the keypad close to the light that will get turned on... well nope, it's in a random place. The "Add 30-seconds" button is Not the same as the "Start" as my old microwave (which now I know was so much simpler/intuitive).. It's also located at a random place. And opening/closing the door is not smooth. I hope it won't break anytime soon... time will tell. But again, it does the basic functionality that a microwave is supposed to do, so everything else while annoying is not that big of a deal.

Payed for a new microwave, received a damaged one

I researched this microwave online and then went to the store to purchase only to find out they don't keep it in stock. Had to order from store and ship to home. It arrived in only a few days but after opening, I found out it was dented across the top. The box was fine so I was concerned that it was dropped/dented before being packed. I called Best Buy and after discussing with the associate I was told if I kept the microwave Best Buy would submit a request to GE to contact me for either a monetary discount for the dent or possibly an extended warranty as I was nervous there might be damage internally beyond the denting I could see externally. Since the microwave mounts to the cabinets, the denting would be hidden and I didn't really want to wait for another microwave to ship so I took this option. Assuming GE would call and offer some sort of compensation since I was assured they would. They never did... So far the microwave seems to be working fine but beware if the same happens to you. It might be better to send back the damaged microwave since they don't follow through with any compensation. I ended up paying full price for damaged goods.

My old Maytag brand microwave quit cooking. I thought it would be difficult to match the bisque colors of the old microwave since it would be right over the Maytag stove and beside the Maytag fridge. But this GE was the perfect light color. The second great thing is that the lights of this microwave are so bright! I love it. There is high and low light. Low light was the brightness of my previous microwave. I put it in myself and my only trouble was that I had put some other holes in the upper cabinet with the original microwave. This new one would add an additional 3 holes. I ended up putting down a 1/4" piece of plywood in the cabinet and drilling the three new holes through that. The only problem I had besides that was with the glass turntable. It was much larger than the previous one and on the first day, I hit and CHIPPED the glass turntable as I was lifting a casserole dish into the oven. Am considering contacting GE.

This microwave has met my expectations so far after about a month of use. Installation was about moderate difficulty - for my application, I had to change the fan orientation, which was not terribly difficult. Installing the bracket to hang the microwave was easy, but the template for where to cut holes in the cabinet above was downright frustrating. I would recommend simply measuring reference distances and marking where to cut and drill. I wasted about 45 minutes here that could have been saved. During my installation, I had a bolt that was not threaded correctly and would not seat into the microwave from the cabinet above. A quick call to GE had a kind service representative sending a replacement my way. The part arrived within a week. Overall, the install took about 3 hours. The microwave itself works great now that it is installed. Noise during use is relatively low, the surface light is bright, and the cooking options are varied enough to be useful. Power is adequate, so food comes out hot without enormous cook times. My one real complaint is the exhaust fan. It just does not pull enough air from above the range. I also feel that vent intakes are too far to the back of the range to be at all effective for a pan that is steaming on a front burner. This seems to be a common issue for most newer microwaves, as I have seen the same thing at friends' houses as well. All in all, I am pleased with this microwave for the sale price that I paid.

The cheap plastic door handle broke after about a year and a half. Contacted GE online (below) to order new one. They wanted $168.75, plus shipping. They later offered me a discount of $138. Then called a manager at GE, who spoke 10 words for every one word I spoke and then she was upset at me because I was interrupting her speak. She told me the price included genuine GE parts. When I said the original was cheap plastic, she hung up on me. Please save yourself a headache, DON'T BUY GE!!! George: need the door handle for a jvm3160rf3ss ge microwave George: Still there? Tieraney: I can give you the price if that is what you need . George: Let's start there. Tieraney: $168.75 is the price plus shipping and handling . George: I can buy the whole brand new microwave at Best Buy for $179.99 George: Please look up that price and try again. Just the silver handle Tieraney: That is the price

I loved my previous countertop GE for over 16 years so I figured I would get a new one when I needed to replace my over the range Samsung in my newly moved into house, only thing was the Samsung only lasted a year. So I immediately went out to look for a GE, It has the same wattage as my old GE but that CT(countertop) one melted 2Tbsp of butter in <30 secs. This one takes at least 45-60 secs, so it does not seem as powerful. My wife does like the defrosting capabilities on this model, because "it actually defrosts" unlike our previous GE model which seemed to cook and thaw at the same time. I like the dual speed fan and dual dimness of the light and now to what I do not like...GE I hope you are listening. GE who designed the setup for the keypad configuration? The add 30 sec button is 'hidden' inside all the rest of the keys, why not put it near the bottom near the cancel and start buttons. and the cook time button? (yes some people like to use their microwave to melt butter for 45 seconds) it is lost inside the sea of confusion trying to find that function button. All in all I like the microwave and it is a good buy at under 200 and I do recommend it, but I just do not like the control button setup.

The G.E. JVM3160DFCC Microwave Oven fit perfectly. I was impressed the first time I used it to heat something for three minutes. The item came out hot, the ingredients were heated, looked appealing and delicious to eat unlike the previous unit which tended to burn and hardened the texture of the food that was heated. I like the way the display window tells you that your food is ready, The lights under the microwave clearly illuminate the stove top cooling area with no shadows. We made Pop Secret Movie Theater Popcorn and followed the instructions, ON THE BAG, and the popcorn came out PERFECT. I felt like I was in the walk in movie theater... the popcorn was soft, well heated and only a few kernals were leftover. Yes, buy this microwave to replace your old GE over the oven unit. The two Best Buy install team members were quick and cleaned up after themselves. **** TWO THUMBS UP!

I love the way the microwave operates, but I can’t believe the handle snapped off so soon. I’m not rough with it, and I wouldn’t even say it gets used everyday. I called for a replacement handle and they want $58! I’m not even sure if I’d be able to replace the handle without knowing how to completely disassemble the door. The screws are located INSIDE the door. To replace the whole door, it’s $148! I might as well spend $200 and buy another brand that isn’t a cheap piece of junk. There is also a crack in the plastic on the bottom of the door.Even though the model number is different, this is exactly what my microwave looks like, so I’m assuming this is the new version. Our microwave broke the same day that we have family coming over from out of town.Went to the Best Buy in our city but they didn’t have it in stock so we have to pick it up 40 miles away. Took us 2 hrs drive round trip. We have to hire someone to install it because if Best Buy will have it delivered and installed we have to wait the following week for the item to arrive and we are hosting that weekend so we didn’t have a choice. As soon as we got home and installer has arrived, we took the unit out of the box and the item has been severely dented in the side. Installer took over 4 hours installing it because he has a hard time fitting the dented unit. We were so ready to return it and installer was giving up already but we can’t have people over the weekend with no working microwave. We ended up paying the installer almost the same price as this disappointing unit for the inconvenience and we’re stuck with a microwave that we’re hoping is not going to break anytime soon from the damage of the dent. Waste of time and money!

Operation is very quiet, food heats up quickly, installation was reasonable for a DIY individual. Installation was probably about a 6/10 in scale of difficulty. If you've hung a shelf, you can install this microwave. (1) Locate/trace Studs (2) Drill bracket Holes & screw in the bracket. (3) Prepare the microwave ventilation (4) Cut the template for your cabinet style (5) Cut out the cabinet holes for the screws & power cord (6) place microwave on bracket and insert screws through cabinet base to hold microwave in place. (7) plug in microwave (8) make popcorn The most intensive part of this whole installation process was changing the outlet above the range from a cap to an actual outlet. If you're only one person getting this thing into place, use a sterlite/rubbermaid to get it close to the height and then its much easier. I did this since my wife is pregnant. You can do it. Especially consider this if you've already got a stove in place.

Very disappointed in the longevity of this microwave. Shortly after we passed the one year purchase point, it stopped cooking. It's an over the range mount and the surface light still works, as well as the clock and timer. The problem comes when you try to use it for its intended purpose of heating and cooking. When you put something inside the microwave to heat, it trips the circuit breaker. We have replaced that circuit breaker but it didn't help, it still trips it. Searching online we found many people with this problem. We contacted the manufacturer and all they told us is that they were very sorry but we should contact a repairman. It's not worth it. We didn't buy the store extended warranty because we felt like a new product should last. This one was a disappointment!
