Nice fridge, but has door issues

We bought this fridge because a) the size is perfect for the designed space in our kitchen and the same size is not available from other manufacturers, b) the door is reversible (we needed the left side hinge), c) it is Energy Star rated (I wouldn't buy one that isn't), d) the reviews were mostly positive. The installers did a fair job of reversing the door (the procedure is fairly complex and they managed to do it without looking at the instructions; one required part was missing). After the installers left, I noticed a few things that were not done right and fixed them. Most important, the gap between the fridge and freezer doors was noticeably wider on the right (opening) side, and the freezer door would not swing closed all the way without a hard push. Furthermore, the puff of air produced by closing the fridge door would cause the freezer door to pop open. This seems to be a significant design flaw - the lower hinge on the freezer door has some play in the mounting holes and the position has to be adjusted before tightening the screws to allow proper closing of the freezer door. I was able to adjust the position of the lower hinge plate by raising the left corner (using a commercial air bag) loosening the screws just enough to allow the hinge to move, adjusting the hinge position while holding the door in the correct position and retightening the screws. I notice that other owners have experienced similar problems based on posted reviews (here and elsewhere - some apparently without even reversing the door, and some had to return their fridge for a replacement). The freezer door still doesn't close all the way of it's own weight (it requires a slight push), but at least it doesn't pop open every time we close the fridge. The owner's manual doesn't address this issue (it simply says "screw the new bottom hinge to the other side of the door opening on the case"). These problems could be avoided if GE simply sold the fridge from the factory properly adjusted in both left and right door swing configurations, instead of requiring the installer/owner to change it. I have some concerns about how much weight the glass fridge shelves will hold, since they are fairly thin, have no support in the center, and will flex if a heavy object is placed on them. There is no information available in the manual or web site relating to that - for example, will the shelves hold 50 lbs? We like the fridge door on top (our last fridge was a top freezer model). The general layout of the interior and lighting is good - allowing good visibility and accessibility of the contents. It would be nice if there were more options for shelf adjustment. The freezer drawers are a convenience and probably save energy, but the requirement to open the freezer door to 90 degrees for access takes some getting used to. A light in the front of the freezer would have been nice. An ice maker would also have been nice, but we are not heavy ice users except in the summer time. The stainless steel doors look good. The side panels, which are both exposed in our installation, are painted (grey) metal instead of stainless steel, which seems kind of cheap - especially considering the premium price of the unit.

We absolutely love this fridge! Fit is amazing and in the installation process, for our otherwise tiny kitchen, we gained quite a bit of floor space. Our previous unit stuck out 39”. This GE is 27” deep and looks flawless. The electronics are quite accurate and the freezer section, which has 3 drawers, keeps things at what I would call a commercial grade freeze.

One of the few units with a counter depth. In this case 27”. So it fits nicely in my narrrow “galley” kitchen. Pros Nice size. Quiet. Cons Awkward door- recessed handle looks good but you have to “ backhand” to grab it using your right hand, which is normal hand to use on a right opening set up. Also, I would want at least ONE area of the freezer to NOT have a drawer.

This fridge comes with a long wait, but it was worth it because it fit perfectly in our space. It looks nice and works well. It has plenty of shelves and drawers for our needs. One thing to note: I did end up reversing the door swing, and it wasn’t quite as simple as the directions suggested. You will definitely need a second person if you decide to change it.

This particular brand/model was the only refrigerator that I could find that would properly fit into the designated space. It has a clean appearance. I like how easy it is to see inside the vegetable and fruit bins. I also like how the freezer is organized; three separate draws. My only disappointment is the lack of actual handles for opening the doors. Using the side "grooved" handles are awkward and I am forever wiping down that area.

Good refrigerator for smaller kitchens. I like the clean looks of not having projecting handles. Some design problems to be aware of are: 1) that it only has rollers on the back corners, the front has plastic feet that adjust the tilt, but they make moving the unit out for cleaning impossible. I had to pry the front of the unit up and slip a furniture moving pad under the two front feet so that the unit could be moved out of the cabinet for cleaning (behind and underneath). Poor design on GE's part. 2) Also the two hinged shelf covers on the refrigerator door are really poorly designed. I had to remove one of them as it kept coming off whenever you lifted the cover(door) to remove the butter or eggs (or whatever you choose to place there). Otherwise It has served us well so far after 5 months of use.

GE delivered a great product for my limited size kitchen! Fridge space beautifully organized for maximum storage efficiency. Freezer temp regulated so food keeps perfectly without moisture. My old fridge still worked, but this refrigerator made life so much better.

Working well so far. there does seem to be a design flaw as regards the fridge door, creaking due to plastic on the door and the fridge cabinet that rub together. A fiddly issue for an expensive unit.

We needed a new refrigerator for a smaller space, and this one fit the area perfectly. We’ve only had it a few weeks, but it works well so far, and looks nice. My only complaint is to access the freezer, you have to open the door wide, then pull out the drawers. I would have preferred just a pull out drawer.

Love this new fridge! Took along time to order and have delivered (weeks) but worth the wait. This fridge is very spacious since it does not have the ice maker/water dispenser. Did have to call a plumber since this new fridge did not need to be hooked up to water like our old one. Would have been nice to plan for this.

One gorgeous machine that fits my counter depth space perfectly. Even though it’s only 18.9 cft it’s larger than my previous Whirlpool 21 cft side by side bottom freezer. This machine is manufactured much better too with rolling drawers, a large bottom freezer and plenty of space.

I like the turbo cool function, it comes in handy when you're doing meal prep and putting a lot of recently cooked leftovers in the fridge all at once. I also like the lack of extra features. It can be hard to find a quality fridge/freezer that doesn't have a water filter, ice maker, wifi, etc.

    Door reversal WARNING

We actually really like the fridge so far. BUT: the door reversal was a nightmare. We were warned it was more complicated than usual so ordered it rather than trying DIY. First Best Buy third party team didn’t do it right and freezer door wouldn’t shut properly and bounced open when fridge door closed, leading to ice up in freezer. Entire fridge needed to be returned. Next Best Buy team refused to do it because didn’t want to mess it up. Finally got a team that knew what they were doing and so far, so good. But it was not a pleasant experience—door reversal buyer beware!

We have a small, older kitchen so we couldn't fit a larger refrigerator. This one is well organized with lots of space. The motor is very quiet, although you hear an occasional "gurgle." Only wish a large milk bottle would fit on the shelf instead of the door.
