Just plug it into the outlet and connect your devices to it. Can't speak to how well they protect. Hoping I don't have to put them to the test on that. That goes for any surge protector I've owned. The specifications listed are a bit off. When you plug this into a wall outlet, the width is actually 1' 5/8" off the wall, which is compact enough for most wall mounts.
