I just bought this a month ago, it sounds like a cat is stuck in it cleaned it defrosted it everything still sounds like a animal is dying, however i did buy this one after i went through 3 others of a different brand that all broke as well. So i guess ill leave it unplugged tonight ans check it again tomorrow abd see if i need to buy a new one again

After 3 weeks, it started making a screeching noise when making ice. Yes, it had water. We even bought a cleaner specifically for the machine to maintain it. We only use purified or filtered water (not tap), and we still can’t get it to work right.

Overall, disappointed. Water leaks when using the side tank. Ice production was good in the beginning, but has slowed down considerably. Will replace filter and see if that helps. My smaller ice machine gave less problems.

2 months in and it leaks everywhere. Even with cleaning weekly and only running distilled water. Thought $500 for a GE would result in a higher end product. Not in this case.

While it worked (2 months), it was flawless. I ran ONLY distilled water for the 1st month, then installed a WaterDrop RO unit and started using RO water. Found the unit powered down for unknown reasons. Turned it back on, it circulated water but the instant the compressor attempted to start the unit shut down. Tried all manner of troubleshooting, but same results. Looks like a failed compressor. Thankfully I have a geek squad policy on it plus the GE warranty.

This ice maker does not work. Followed the instructions and had my handyman help. Not making ice at all. It was the last one in the store and seemed unopened but it doesn't work. Will be returning this weekend, its already boxed up.

The GE Opal 1.0n with side tank has been a great appliance addition for my family. We do not have an a in-fridge ice maker. For years we have bought ice and kept a bag in the freezer. It works, but is inconvenient, especially with a full bag of ice to throw around. After looking at ice makers for a while, I came across an opportunity to grab this one. I am not disappointed. I was surprised by the size of the package. It’s big! The unit is definitely very well protected in shipping. There is even a plywood section of the packaging for extra protection. Once I got it unpacked, it because clear that this unit would need some counter space. I expected that, but it’s definitely not small, especially with the side tank to hold water. Setup really was pretty easy. I followed the instructions to the letter and had no problems at all. Cleaning the unit is simple enough. Just put a little bleach in the internal tank, run the cleaning cycle, and drain the unit. Rinse a few times, and you are good to go. It’s worth noting, that in order to drain the unit, you disconnect the water lines from the back. When you do this, it immediately starts draining. You either need to move the unit to the sink for cleaning, or have a bucket on hand to catch the water…otherwise you’re going to have a mess on your hands. It starts making ice in the first 10-15 minutes, but it takes a while to accumulate enough to be useful. I don’t know how long it takes to fill up with ice, but it was full within a few hours of setting up the unit. I love the softer crunchy pellet ice. I don't think it could keep up with a larger gathering, but it's a great supliment to a bag of ice for parties. It’s great to just munch on, and it soaks up the flavor of your beverage. Goes great in a cocktail. The side water tank is awesome. Super easy to pull off and fill anytime the add water light comes on. My family loves having easy anytime access to ice. My son fills his water bottle every morning before school and munches on the ice all day. I haven’t had to descale the unit yet, but I believe that process takes like 18 hours. It wants to run a disinfect cycle after 100 hours of ice making. I’ve been running mine for 2 weeks and it hasn’t asked for a cleaning yet. It is a bit on the noisy side, but not more than I expected. Anytime you have to run a compressor like that it’s going to make some noise. I would recommend putting it in an area where you don’t hang out a lot. I have mine in a breakfast nook off the kitchen. I doubt I’d want it in a conversation area or where you sleep. I really don’t know what else I could expect from it. It’s easy to use, relatively easy to maintain, it does a great job of keeping ice ready for my crew. I’d definitely recommend this unit.
